Im not rich and I brought my D7200 on marketplace earlier this year because I follow you .I was devastated when you drowned your camera. What I’m trying to say is that The D7200 in my opinion is everything I need in a camera , it’s a quality camera.all the mod cons I don’t really need .just gotta work a little harder .Henry come out to Australia one day you would love it 👍🐨

Nice, have fun with that camera. I still use my D7200 over the D850 (yeah I'm spoiled, I know :D ). Fantastic photo quality even A3 or A2 Format. Pleasent Bokeh with my Lenses. Build like a tank. Possible to control and link with my Smartphone. Lightroom 6 still can handle the RAW Data. Can control her blind. Never let me down. She saw a lot countries! More than my Flagship DSLR :-) .

Great video. I still have my D7200 but have just added a D750 to my bag. I shoot a variety of subjects (Sport/Music/Events/Nature) so it's great to have the extra reach of the D7200 and the low-light capabilities and extra resolution afforded by the full-frame D750. Best of both worlds.

Superb stuff again Henry. To be fair it did look absolutely freezing out on the salt marsh!! Glad you are enjoying the new gear and I totally understand that the new stuff would be better - continuous improvement and all that. I go out and about with my D7200 and often think of you when I'm using it and what you might have opted for in terms of composition. I love the crop factor on it and it's a great piece of kit with oodles of playthings so I'll stick with it until it eventually gives out. I agree with you about the printing etc too - I don't print professionally so my images are for me and social media really - the D7200 gives me everything I need (and more) for that. :-)

What's up Henry? Haven't seen you in some time now. That is a very nice new camera. I know it takes great shots. But, you made a statement most people doesn't get. No mater how good a camera body is with all the bells and whistles; It always come down to the lens. The quality of the glass that let the light hit the sensor. That is all that counts. Peace to you Henry!

If you can afford it, and it's what brings you joy in life, I say go for it! I started with a D5300, progressed to a refurbished D500, Z 6 refurbished, and traded that in for a new Z7 that was on sale. It was a score! You can take great photos with any of those cameras, but the Z 7 is without a doubt superior because of the 45 megapixels, and newer technology The difference in depth and detail of the photos is obvious. I've never printed a photo, but it's handy if you need to crop a photo without losing image quality, & that was important to me. Also, full frame and IBIS were on my wish list. The gear does & doesn't matter. Refurbished from a reputable company is a good way to go. I use the Z 7 with the Nikkor Z 24 - 200. This is just a hobby for me, but at this point in life I decided I didn't have to justify getting what I wanted to anyone, especially myself. Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think... If you're a beginner start out small and work your way up if you decide photography is for you would be my advice.

Henry, thanks for enduring the seaside bluster for us. The resulting photos were absolutely stunning. The shot of sea, sun, and light beams is just inspirational - I'm hoping it shows up in your 2023 calendar. I also appreciate your balanced no-nonsense approach to your gear. I'm a happy owner of a recently purchased Z50 2-lens kit. It's a joy to use and I'm pleased with the all-around quality of this combination. Looking forward to growing into it.

The Z50 is a great camera.. I have it and a Z7 and in a lot of cases the results from them are similar.. (I also forget which one I am using sometimes.. though I do wish the Z50 had the joystick for moving focus) I don't have the 50-250 but the 16-50 is a great little lens.. Love using the Z's with film era manual glass as its super easy.. 🙂

Another fine video Henry, the first image was absolute class I might add. I own both the D7200 & FF D810 and I enjoy them both for differing reasons and both cameras take sublime well-rounded images given the composition and glass. IMO perhaps the only drawback and in particular the D810 is the weight together with the lenses which I go both long and wide-angle when out and about can become uncomfortable compared to the more recent mirrorless models. I don't intend to part with either for the time being but I do recognize (gulp) that soon the advantages of mirrorless and added technology will outweigh DLSR cameras if not already.......until that day I shall enjoy life with what kit I have 😊. Looking forward to your next adventure 👌 keep up the good work.

Always look forwards to sitting in front of fire with a beer and watching your latest video on a Thursday.
Another great day out in the bay, love those water channels, must be loads of compositions there, you got some excellent shots.
Fully agree about not getting hung up on equipment.
Being a tight Yorkshireman, I spent years using and trying to understand my Canon 550D as a begginer before i purchased a 2nd hand Canon 6D mk2, and you know what, I didn't fully understand or use all the functions on the 550D (wonder how many others upgrade and haven't fully utilised their initial gear).
For me its about getting out and enjoying the day with the camera and attempting to put everything into practice and not spending loads on tackle.
Even learning and using Affinity Photo for post processing (think was a 1off payment of around £50 and no monthly payments), ok, its not Lightroom but works for me.
I think its your infectious enthusiasm that draws me to your style of videos, I have said it in the past that you could video making a cup of tea and it would be interesting.
Keep going and don't change, you have some great loyal followers from reading some of the comments.
    Out!

.. and yet another grand day out .. Oh what a breath of fresh air you are Henry. A couple of excellent images there, really enjoyed those! I must admit I am very pleased that you're enjoying the Z7 after the D7200's "soft crutch of hope" euphemistically met "the hard boot of destiny". Its been great to see that you're really enjoying the new kit, not because of what it is, but because of what you can achieve with it. I was sorely tempted to get a Z50 recently, but my arms proved to be shorter than the depth of my pockets ... and to be fair I fairly regularly run out of skill using my D3500, so will stick with that for another year.

Hi Henry and happy day! Always enjoy both your immense talent and enthusiasm! I don't know, I think the images out of the Z7 are just that much richer in color and depth. I've found myself saying that a couple times while watching your recent videos. I also remember the shot a little while ago at the river when you were all frustrated you blew the highlights. I don't think you would have saved that image with the D7200. Not knocking the D7200, I have a 40D I was awful fond of and made a bunch of great images with. The Z7 is just better. I think it was a great decision.

I found your perspective quite refreshing and informative and as others have mentioned, composition is not reliant upon sensor size. I have a camera with an APS-C sensor, and am very happy with it. When I am a *competent* photographer I may consider changing, but till then... And if anyone who would like a further perspective on sensor sizes, Mark Denney has chronicled his journey on his YT channel: he went from Sony full-frame to Fujifilm APS-C and now has a medium format camera. He goes into some depth about the pros and cons of his choices.

  • @kevinroberts1888
    @kevinroberts1888 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Enjoyed the video. I shot with a Canon 70D, an APS-C camera (which I think might have actually been one of the Nikon D7200's main rivals) for a long time. I really loved that camera and I don't think anyone should let not having a full frame stop them in any way. I eventually got a Canon 5D Mark ii for several reasons. I wanted the extra creative freedom the increase in dynamic range would give me in post processing and also I enjoy collecting and playing around with vintage lenses as a side hobby. Full frame lets me see the entire character of the vintage 35mm lenses, which is something I really enjoy. I still keep the 70D as a backup since the 5D2 is an older camera, which I got to tide me over until the 5D mark iv went down in price, but the 5D mark ii is such a good camera, I'm actually not in any hurry to leave it. lol

I was quite tickled to learn that my crop sensor Canon 90D has the same bells and whistles that you mentioned about your Nikon Z7, except, of course, the full frame sensor. I never really thought of the 90D as a "high end" camera, at least compared to something like a Canon 5D Mark IV. But hey, if it has some of the modern conveniences, I'm happy with it! Also, I hear you about the wind battering you into submission. I live in the Rocky Mountains and quite often don't want to get out of the car because of how ridiculous the wind can get. Another great video, Henry, so cheers!

It's more than just the camera. You know how they say that when you buy a particular brand camera that you buy into their eco system? The z series is a whole new eco system within Nikon. You can buy a d850 which has a 45 mp sensor that has just a much resolution and puts out high quality images. The lenses are what make the z series great. They have not put a out a bad lens yet. The new lenses are superior to the old f mount lenses. They're not just sharper they're sharp at nearly every aperture. There's a lot of older Nikon lenses that are mostly just sharp at certain apertures like f/8. If you look at the charts on the z lenses you'll see that they are nearly as sharp wide open as they are at the sweet spot. There little or no coma, chromatic aberration and little to no focus breathing. Focus breathing makes it harder to focus attack images. The old 14-24 is a great lens. The 14-30 is sharper corner to corner. And the new 14-24 is even sharper. If anyone is considering a crop sensor to start with, buy the z50 so you can get the best lenses. You can always adapt older lenses if you need to but you'll have access to their best lenses.

After 5 years of photography I still use my first ever entry level Canon and it's served me so well, I've got some quality shots on it, it's helped me grow my skills as a hobbyist photographer too, time for an upgrade soon like, looking at the canon 90D, feel like I have finally outgrown the 750D, personally I'm gonna stick to the crop sensors for that bit of extra length and I don't print my photos either so 32 megapixels should be more than enough haha! Great video as always pal, nice spot down Sunderland point 👍

Another great video Henry, although it's true the z7 looks great and I could go out and buy one, there's no point as I am enjoying my photography just as much with my olympus em1 mk 2 and I absolutely love it, it's all I need for my landscape photography, perhaps one day I'll get really good at it and feel the need for a better camera, but unless there's
A miracle and I somehow manage to avoid working 40 hours a week, I can't see how a better camera would give me more time to do the thing I love most, I'm pretty sure the most valuable thing is not the camera, but the time we can allocate to doing the thing we love most. ( apologies for the waffle, I had a glass of wine) lol

What you want from a camera? Such an excellent starting question; essential I think. I wanted compact, light, flip screen...this and that. I gave up some useful features to get what would work for me. I don't believe there is a camera or camera system that can do it all, without compromise. You have to live with the compromise you can accept.

I shoot mostly in MFT with an Olympus EM1ii. but in winter, when the light drops I tend to use my older Sony A7ii with FF sensor, purely because it has less noise in low light. But low light aside I honestly can't tell any difference in IQ. Theoretically, the Sony has an extra stop of dynamic range, but I really can't tell. A good image beats good IQ every time! Its the camera you have with you that counts.

  • @washingtonradio
    @washingtonradio 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Fully agree, the sensor format that is not that critical but what you do with the images that should determine the gear. I would expect a newer system to be better than an older system (Z vs F in Nikon e.g.) for all manufacturers. And this improvement would be independent of sensor size. Newer cameras, especially mirrorless, have many nice features that can make a photographer's life easier; which features you like depends.

Great video. Great photos. I have to admit I am a bit of a gear pig, but that is only because I don't get an opportunity to go out and shoot much. If I did have more opportunity to shoot, I would be less of a gear pig. I know that sounds strange, but gear collection is a way to enjoy photography for those that are too busy to go out much. Hopefully that will change for me soon and I will be able to think more about the photos and less about the gear.

Hi Henry, I’m a beginner/amateur and currently shooting with an elderly Nikon D40x (getting some good results) hoping to upgrade to a (less elderly) Nikon D5500 soon purely to get multiple focal points and live view. As you say it all boils down to what you do with your images. You are a professional who makes a living out of the gear that you have so you need to give yourself an edge and rightly so. I think I can speak for a lot of us amateurs that we just want to take good quality images that we can be proud of. I’m managing that now with what I have. There is a saying that “the best gear doesn’t make you a better photographer” I’m trying to hone my skills with what I have and the help of you guys and loving it. It’s a long journey and I for one appreciate all the advice you pass on freely. Keep helping us become better please 😉 Two lovely images BTW 👍Regards Garry

I must say that although “equipment doesn’t matter” you are going to see a huge jump in image quality, dynamic range and general usability when you upgrade. That camera has a legendary Sony CCD sensor and I would keep it around just for that but a D5300 or D5500 is a huge jump up. Not sure what your lens collection looks like but try to have at least one fast prime like the 35mm f/1.8 AF-s DX. It can change your photography.

My old Fuji s9600 had a live histogram, flip screen and it was mirrorless! Sadly it died (when I dropped into a stream at Glenco)! My current camera is a Nikon 7200 which does not have live histogram a flip screen and not mirrorless but because it's more modern takes better images (newer technology). The point is if Fuji could make a mirrorless camera like the s9600 take great images over 16 years ago, why on earth are mirrorless DSLR's so expensive now? Maybe if camera manufacturers sold them for less more people would buy them and they would make more money?! But I suppose if they did that no-one would buy the cheaper end cameras pushing their profits down!!?

You actually proved that gear doesn't really matter. If a tool has all the essential functions it just does. You kicked everybody else's butts with a crop sensor camera up until recently. Every car is just a car. The latest Tesla is no different than a 1972 Nova really. They both can get you to the grocery store and back home, which is really why you even have a car. We want new stuff because it's fun to shop and maybe I want air conditioning in the car on a hot day. It took everything I had to not sell my Z7 and order the Z9 (I didn't really even need the Z7 over my Z6). I'm not shooting race cars and if I did, I could still capture what was necessary. To me, you're a master of composition and that's inspiring. You're not lazy and you go the extra mile. I may be an odd fish, but I have more respect for the person that do the most with the least, If your camera knows what a car is and has the ability to stick with it, how does that impact craft? Keep on sharing.

I don’t really use all the capabilities but being able to quickly pull up the i menu to make changes to whatever I need is really nice. I’m on and off the tripod a lot so quick access to ibis and exposure delay mode is helpful. I know there are benefits with face/eye detect but I rarely photograph people. The Nikon Z7 has a dynamic range of 14.7EVs. That is a huge dynamic range.
However, the D7200 has a dynamic range of 14.6 EVs. It was one of it’s main attributes. It’s main competition at the time of release was the Canon 7d mkII which only had a dynamic range of 11.8 EVs by comparison. Even the Canon 5d mkIV which came out a year after the Nikon D7200 only had a dynamic range of 13.6 EVs. A Sony A7r IV is rated as 14.77 EVs.
The D7200 still ranks extremely highly for dynamic range even by today’s standards. So while what you’re saying about FF vs APS-C is generally true, it doesn’t apply to the D7200 which was miles ahead on it’s release and only being caught up with today.

Dynamic Range. That's the basic difference between the two. Both produce excellent images that can be enlarged as big as you like and the images on a billboard at a distance will look just fine. It's all in the way the sensor renders the image and the beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder. The D7200 has a niche in the Nikon lineup akin to the D700, it renders images with a dynamic range that isn't matched in the cameras that came before or after it. The same thing happened with the Z7, it is a new sensor designed specifically for the Z mirrorless range. The Z 7ii has an upgraded sensor which leaves the Z 7 in a niche of its own just like the D7200 and my beloved D700. The difference is very subtle, but well worth it for anyone wanting to give it a try.

From DXO site The class-leading APS-C sensor scores from the Nikon D7200 mean that results from the smaller DX format are getting ever closer to
the best full-frame sensors. Despite being a little way off from breaking through the 90-point barrier, an overall score of 87 from the
D7200 is only a half-stop behind the Nikon D610 with 94 points, and two-thirds of a stop off the best-performing sensor we've tested
      (the D810 with 97 points).
The big difference between DX and FX sensors is still in their Low-Light ISO performance, where the physically larger sensor and greater
pixel pitch results in over one-stop better sensitivity for the larger format. Results are closer for Color Sensitivity and Dynamic Range,
however, putting the D7200's sensor performance in the same ballpark as the D810 and D610 for these sub-scores. The D7200's
outstanding Dynamic Range score of 14.6 EVs actually surpasses that of the D610 at base ISO, and is only 0.2 EVs behind the D810. As
sensitivity increases, the rate of decline in Dynamic Range is broadly similar, too, with all three sensors offering good Dynamic Range of
over 10 EVs up to ISO 3200.
For Color Sensitivity, the larger FX formats are superior at base ISO, but with overall Portrait scores of 24.5 bits for the D7200 compared
to 25.1 bits & 25.7 bits for the D610 and D810, respectively, the difference is less than one stop. As sensitivity increases, the gap
between the APS-C and full-frame sensors for color widens a little, however, so while good Color Sensitivity over 20 bits is possible on
the D810 and D610 up to ISO 1600, the D7200's APS-C sensor tails off at ISO 800.
Of course the Z series is I’m sure like the d850 a bit higher still but great performance from the d7200

The camera does not matter for taking a photo because it's the person who composes and takes the shot, but it does matter for the technical quality of the image (so does the lens). But most importantly, if you shoot with a camera that is fun to use to you, it is more likely that you take it out and actually take shots an therefore the chances are bigger to take a keeper, banger or whatever you call it.

I don't shoot landscapes. I shoot mostly birds/wildlife. I have been shooting with the D500 for four years now, and the D850 for two years, both cameras are fantastic, the only thing the D850 has over the D500 is more pixels which means more cropping headroom, it also helps when the animal is close and you are using a fixed prime lens you have more headroom. In regards to image quality between crop vs FF sensor, I don't see any. I print 17x22 size prints with my Canon Prograf PRO1000 and the results are fantastic from both cameras.

Yes, buy according to individual needs. I shoot a lot, and often in low light. For me, the best benefit in getting a full-frame camera is the better ISO performance. With it (Canon 5D4), I can shoot at ISO 800 or even 1600 without a major hit in image quality. I shot for 2 years with what was Canon's best crop sensor camera, the 80D, and if my ISO was higher than 400 or 640, the quality of my files suffered. If my exposure was a bit off, they would not respond well to editing in Lightroom. And you could see the grain starting at 800. Major improvement with full-frame.
And also, as you say, the many added helpful features that come with a higher-end camera together make a big difference, if you shoot a lot. Camera quality does matter. And I'll be controversial--I find it is important even for Instagram or FB posts. I occasionally get a good shot with my (high end) phone and post it, but its clear to me that the image quality is always much less than what I could have gotten with any kind of real camera--if you look at it on a large screen.
Nice shots today, Henry. In general, I do enjoy your photography and your detailed discussions on how you achieve it, including many helpful tips.

Every upgrade I've had along the way has been underwhelming in terms of image quality. The real boost has been in user experience: more buttons, touchscreen, better menu layout, bigger brighter higher refresh rate screens and viewfinders, and all the special functions, etc. I've been playing with an old small sensor superzoom lately and it produces remarkably good images - provided you aren't dealing with high dynamic range, low light or anything moving too fast - but using it is just painful. It takes a week to change the settings, handy features basically don't exist, and the displays have slightly less detail than I could manage with a quick sketch. You can literally see a grey grid between each pixel on the viewfinder.
Have you experiment much with your video camera for stills? The high res mode should be able to outdo the Z7 provided the conditions aren't too extreme.

🇨🇦/🇺🇸... Hey there Henry. I work as a Large-Format printing tech. I heard you mention about printing a "massive billboard". Welp... I know I've commented about this before... even that doesn't require a larger sensor IF one is VIEWING from the highway. The difference really is whether a person is going to be walking right up next to a huge image... such as when printing a large wall-paper image in a atrium or foyer. THEN it matters. Even then, however, a scene of a mountain is different than a scene of a mountain with teeny tiny little mountain climbers, tiny little mountain goats and a tiny little hawk! On top of that a hot day SHIMMERS ruining the sharpness of an image where a cold day keeps its sharpness. Then there is tripods... don't get me started on "stiffness" vs "vibration damping" on tripods! Now... besides my full frame D810 I, too, have an Olympus OM-D E-M1 mk2. Because I have health issues (neck and shoulders) that make it difficult to carry the massive D810 around for long hikes, and unless I have a specific image I want to take with a higher rez full-frame, I will often just take my Four/Thirds to save me the aches and pains! I'll bet Simon Baxter would appreciate that. Cheers, bro! 😉
