  • Released in 1994 for Nintendo's Game Boy, Donkey Kong (also known as 'Donkey Kong 94') is a remake/adaptation of Nintendo's 1981 arcade platformer of the same name. Much like in the original, the game revolves are Mario (originally known as Jumpman) as he tries to rescue his girlfriend Pauline from Donkey "you may also know me as Cranky, no I’m not the Donkey Kong that’ll be voiced by Seth Roger in Illuminations holiday 2022 Mario movie” Kong across 100+ levels of puzzle-solving goodness.
The game is... awesome. There, I said it. It totally holds up and is an absolute blast to play. It features fun and challenging, though seldom frustrating, level design and acts as a natural extension of the arcade originals' action. While the original Donkey Kong was an incredible game for its time and has also aged extremely well over the years, DK94 refines its platforming and expands on many of its ideas to the point of near perfection. While 1994 would also introduce gamers to the refined and impressive action of the Donkey Kong Country series, DK94 stands as one of the iconic Nintendo character's finest games and is one that many gamers ought to check out. And with rumors of the original Game Boy making its way onto Nintendo Switch Online one of these days, that day might just come soon for players to give this classic Game Boy game a shot!

Heh, I remember having this and playing it on the Super Gameboy. The want for Donkey Kong Country was strong, and luckily, this game was pretty damn good too

I was absolutely blown away by Star Wars Trilogy Arcade when I was a kid. The Darth Vader fight especially was just nuts...
Would be interested your take on the Donkey Kong Land games. They (usually the first) show up on a lot of "greatest GB" lists, but there's a dearth of commentary/review videos--especially for the second, my favorite. Anyway, nice video here dude!

Thanks for the kind words! Star Wars Trilogy Arcade is such an awesome game that I have a ton of fond memories of playing too!
I’d love to cover DKL some time, perhaps in November or so. It’s a fairly polarizing game for fans these days so I’m sure it’ll make for an interesting review!

My favorite arcade game is probably Bubble Bobble. It’s just one where the gameplay loop really grabs me and being able to play with two players at the same time is a nice bonus.

Wow great video quality and information! I found this game only fews years back and it blows my mind because I think they give a new life for the original Donkey Kong arcade game with new mechanicals and puzzles.

My favorite arcade game of all time is a three-way tie between Aliens versus Predator, Turtles in time, and Donkey Kong. Centipede is a close second although I've never been very good at it

Double Dragon will always be my favorite arcade game...I love enough that I bought a cabinet at auction almost 20 years ago and I still have it. Others that are high on my list are Spy Hunter, Rampage, Gauntlet, Bad Dudes, Bubble Bobble, and Star Wars: The Arcade Game.

    • @NichePlays

Lot of great games there! I’ve actually never played the arcade version of Double Dragon but I think I’ll have to change that one of these days!

My favorite arcade game is probably either Gunbird or Ninja Spirit. The former kickstarted my love of arcade shmups, and the latter affirmed to me that there are likely many games I've never heard of that are worth checking out.
This video is pretty awesome! A certain someone linked me to this on a certain website, and I've gladly subscribed. You make a lot of insightful observations without retreading too much of what others have already said about these games (though without getting too big of a head about it, I've had to remind myself more often these days that not everyone has the same knowledge of games and game history that I do lol!). The production value here makes for a great watching experience, and - while I'm going to guess you've heard this before - I'm surprised you don't already have a larger following. Awesome stuff.
As far as requests, I'd be curious to hear your take on Dragon Ball: Advanced Adventure!

I'm glad you liked this video! Also I've never heard of those games before but I'll have to look into them sometime soon! And yse, I actually plan to review Advanced Adventure sometime soon, especially since I've been in the mood for some OG Dragon Ball fun lately!

Here’s my game recommendation: The Flintstones: The Treasure of Sierra Madrock on SNES. I have fond childhood memories of that game and wonder if it still holds up or if it was just some licensed shovelware

Consider it added to the list! I’ll try to get to this one by mid November or so!

A masterpiece, It did everything correct. I'm jealous of the lucky guys that thought it was like the arcade and after the 4th stage recieve the plot twist. As for the music, the 9-8 stage with the electric guitar solo is wtf. They had square waves and noise and beside the console limitations it "raise it's head" and dare to mimic a fucking guitar (with success). Provement that limitations breed creativity.

Great video as always! I haven't played this game before because we only owned a couple of Game Boy games back then. It's a shame because we had a Super Game Boy and regularly played Pokémon on our SNES. Maybe I'll get it through Virtual Console on my 3DS because it looks very fun.
QOTD: I have a confession to make LOL I don't recall ever playing an Arcade game. Maybe because they haven't really been that big in Germany or at least in rural areas.

    • @NichePlays
      @NichePlays  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks! You should totally pick this one up! There are rumors that Nintendo will be putting Game Boy games on the Switch soon and I can't imagine they'd skip adding this one to that library if it happens :)
And ha, no worries! Arcades have very much been out of the vogue for ages now so it really isn't that surprising. And who knows, maybe you've played a home port of a classic arcade game without even realizing it haha

back then, you said you wouldnt expect this game to have lives today.
However, today, the new remake of Mario VS Donkey Kong GBA still keeps the Lives, just as mainline 2D Mario has kept the lives counter.
I'm betting if the gameboy game ever gets remade, it would also still keep the Lives counter.

I hope you guys enjoyed this week's Does It Hold Up! Feel free to leave an answer to the question of the day over in the comments, as well as your thoughts on Donkey Kong Arcade/94 and any recommendations for future games you may wanna see reviewed in the future! Also, I realized I referred to Donkey Kong 64 as Donkey Kong Country 64 in this video and... whoops! That's my bad. I kinda just assumed it was a Country game since DK64 was developed by Rare and featured characters from the Donkey Kong Country series lol.

I think the modern Donkey Kong is Donkey Kong Jr's son because Cranky Kong (the former DK) is the modern DK's grandfather..

@@NichePlays it’s a fun game. It was made by Nintendo of America….😵 the 1st one is the best! The sequel play like lemmings. Idk I was not a big fan of those games.
