Donkey Kong 94 was such a damn treat. I got it as a stocking stuffer gift that Christmas and initially didn't pay it much mind as I had much bigger fish to fry. Final Fantasy 3/6 and Super Metroid also released that year, and I was waist deep into both.
A family road trip shortly after that holiday season changed my mind. The carrying case for my Game Boy at the time held 4 games (the 5th being in the unit), and my typical lineup was usually Tetris, Final Fantasy Adventure, Final Fantasy Legend, Final Fantasy Legend 2, and Metroid 2. I figured since it was new, I'd give DK a run while we were on the road. None of the other games even touched the old brick for at least two weeks after that. The game was just so damn fun, and the cheesy little bits were good for a quick chuckle. To this day, DK94 remains one of my favorites from the original green and grey brick.

The story I heard was in an episode of Icons from Miyamoto himself was that they needed a name so he looked the dictionary and saw Donkey, that word is also a synonym for Stubborn and the rest is history.
It's funny in a way, I was thinking for a little while "I'm surprised that John hasn't covered any Donkey Kong games considering how highly he praises them" and then almost like magic this video drops. Fantastic as always man, can't wait to see the DKC reviews!!
Fun fact, there are 2 ways to beat every stage in donkey Kong 3: You can either blow smoke up Donkey's ass and force him back out of the rooftop, or you can kill all of the insects in those hives, because there is indeed a finite number of them. You know you've almost killed them all when the background music changes. But once you get to stage 3, the only way to beat that stage is to Force Donkey Kong to stick his head into the beehive.
Man I totally forgot this marathon was coming up, though I'm glad to see you do it! This was a long time coming and these games deserve recognition. A bit surprised you didn't jump straight into Country but it makes sense.
Man, I was shocked on how DK 94 feels so smooth. The backflip in particular feels amazing and I kinda wish there were more pure platforming levels because flipping through platform to platform feels so satisfying. Makes me wish that it was in the NSMB games, or that it was a style or power up in Mario Maker 2.

8:17 Maybe it's because I was born in the score attack era, but i often find myself going for the high scores in certain old-school games that I'm good at, such as (the faster version of) Ms Pac-Man...which is another reason why I enjoy the original Pac-Man CE so much.
Shit, my personal best score in Ms. Pac-Man is 230,XXX (I don't remember the exact score), and I always seem to fuck up trying to beat it!

Seeing Johnny beardless feels weird. He doesn't look bad, but it just feels weird.
I had the top tier luxury of playing a legit Donkey Kong cabinet at an arcade collector’s house they were renting out a couple summers ago. It was certainly…. an experience…. I’m not sure about ports, But the original cabinet versions will absolutely decimate you if you go in hoping for a traditional Mario or DK Country experience. It’s going to have your buttcheeks clenched like a carpenter’s vice throughout the entire run. Assuming the aforementioned run doesn’t last about a minute or so tops since it is BRUTALLY DIFFICULT with its original intent of harvesting allowances as efficiently as possible. I will definitely remember playing that cabinet for a good while, because modern gamers would probably go ballistic if this was still the norm. However, I would absolutely still recommend anyone reading this pay for a switch port just to experience a slice of VG history from the 80’s, even if you never manage to beat it.

DK ‘94 was probably my first experience with the classic game and to this day it’s one of my favorite DK games
Hey Johnny, before you officially dive into the DKC series, are you in the camp of DKC and beyond Donkey Kong being the grandson of Cranky/OG DK or instead being Donkey Kong Jr/son of OG? I always felt there were cases to be made for both sides but assumed the "grandson" argument was a strictly Rare contrivance that survived past their involvement rather than a Nintendo directive.

Donkey Kong's Arcade Trilogy is ultimately a personal favourite of mine, I grew up with this far more than the Super (Country) Trilogy and future entries (Ultra/064, Jungle Beat, Konga, Diddy Kong Racing and Barrel Blast, Mario versus Donkey Kong, and even the Returns series) that I definitely have a bias towards the Arcade Era because it helped me better understand the level of Precision that we would need in many future Platformers to come: About Five Years and change after I was first exposed to the original Arcade version of Donkey Kong circa I999 (so we're talking about 2004 or 2005 here), I would be exposed to Major Havoc, Atari's notable Multigenre Space Shooter/Puzzle/Platformer Hybrid that would make the foundation for future titles to better understand how Multigenre works (I played the port that we got as part of Atari Anthology); Platforming Precision definitely took a lot of influence from Donkey Kong '8I and Junior that my prior experience truly did help in what is probably one of the hardest Platformers that Atari pumped out in the Early to Mid '80s (seriously, you hold either the Jump Button or a Direction for too long, while in a base, and Major is either flying into an enemy, wall, or Laser Bar without any ability to rebound), we've definitely come a long way since this era of Platformers but I would heavily recommend any Speedrunner to play these for a bit to get better used to future works and it will help better their senses over time across many titles down the road. (:

At any rate, DKC was one of my all-time favorite game series from my childhood. I'm psyched to see this coming series, and it's cool to see the classic Donkey Kongs here. I think I'd played DK Jr on the NES long before I was ever allowed to play my mom's SNES and with it, Donkey Kong Country. Between The Lion King, going to the local zoo and DKC, I think I developed a serious love for African animals and landscapes as a result. :3
One last thing, about the Universal lawsuit. I know that sure, King Kong was a big movie and DK really came close with the design and concept. But isn't Kong a Chinese word to begin with for monkeys, such as the monkey king Son Wukong (or Son Goku if you're Japanese)? Feh.
I have the Donkey Kong Classics NES cartridge as well as Donkey Kong for the Game Boy.

I actually do have a theory, but it kind of piles on to an already existing theory.
Many people theorize that Cranky Kong from the Donkey Kong Country games is the original Donkey Kong.
I actually think that if this is the case, Donkey Kong Jr is most likely the Donkey Kong who's in the Donkey Kong Country series & Donkey Kong Land games (not always playable in games of either series) as well as in the Super Smash Bros games.
I feel like that theory works as it doesn't really make Donkey Kong Jr just fade away into obscurity like Stanley the Bug Man did.

I'm sure SOMEONE has already said this, even with less than an hour since release, but King Kong had nothing to do with Donkey Kong, Miyamoto just learned it was a word that meant something fitting and the shared name (and actions) were surprisingly a coincidence.
Literally as soon as I noticed and went "Wait... where's his fucking beard?!" The magic of Johnny's pure omnipotence seemed to have heard me and answered my question as soon as I asked. Little spooky, but hell if my worries weren't placated in an instant.
