  • In this episode of The NewsHour Agenda with Padmaja Joshi, we will speak about the recent statement of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, which has sparked another controversy. In the latest developments, the Hindi imposition debate has once again ignited in the country after Home Minister Amit Shah considered it as an alternative to English. Meanwhile, the opposition parties have slammed the BJP government for imposing Hindi on the citizens. Speaking on this, DMK spokesperson Sarvanan Annadurai said “Any language other than my mother tongue is a foreign language to me. Be it Telugu, Kannada, Japanese, Hindi. I will treat them all in the same manner. This push for Hindi instead of English is an imposition.”

Hindi is not national language don’t think rather we accept English as our national language too.. we want a language that can connect us and thats definitely not Hindi…
      Reasons
1 Hindi is nothing but Urdu largely spoken by Muslims so definitely South Indian culture and people don’t connect to any thing that’s foreign language, I know there’s difference between Hindi and Urdu but they are like brothers so it’s big no, Urdu is national language of Pakistan..
2 a language should fill confidence and should give freedom to our mind so that we can think freely and that s key too lot of inventions you want an eg lot Indian inventions are from South Indians not north people eg non other than APJ Abdul Kalam even though he’s Muslim he embraced Tamil culture,
3 even after lot of invasions in north and Independence no govt tried to bring culture back and restore it and our education was designed by communists and pro western intellectuals in a way that we hate our country and there was no sense of pride in our country resulted in Hindi speaking states and people became scapegoats of that false history and even South felt but remain resistance becoz of our culture and pride in it..
4 Tamil is much older then even Sanskrit so bit difficult to accept Sanskrit itself than how can we accept its offsprings, you got know like Hindi many other South Indian languages have grown on their own over thousands of years with history, culture and only way too unify India is tell your North Indians to give respect too South language and mainly people becoz the amount of arrogance and superiority complex in North Indian to south people is deplorable that s also one of the reason why hate Hindi language and people just becoz you are in northern part you don’t become superiors in fact you people are one of the biggest reason India got an image of rapists and filthy country and no respect for elders..
5 we don’t need a common language when we have no problem communicating with others, English is international language that’s a need for jobs and follow up with western world, if western world was not so developed or some other eastern part of world like Japanese or Korean was giving job opportunities and Centre of world then we would have learnt that language too, Hollywood played its role in spreading English too… what we have to do is oppose western culture…imposing hindi will abolish all Indian languages and thousands of years of history culture attached to it over the period…
6 solution is seek out and tell original history, let all Indians know the truth and don’t make or impose any language or make 2-3 language as national language including a south language and mainly when you show some gratitude and respect to our people and culture na then you don’t have to impose anything they ll accept with open arms..

But for the past few years nearly 5 years I’m getting calls from cardeko, HDFC, Icici and mobile service provider and few other CustomerCare in hindi first when I speak Tamil to them they speak English and after that I understood why our Tamil leaders oppose hindi because they create a situation to learn by enforcing us. Due to south languages English flourished as a link language in the south. Because of this people can find good paying jobs abroad and be updated with the world. Tell me who’s offering jobs in the Hindi belt? Rather the North Indians should learn south languages when they are looking for jobs in places like Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Trivandrum and Goa. As simple.

    • @divyabharti8479
      @divyabharti8479 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

There are various factors why people from Hindi speaking states move to Southern states for jobs. Look at that Northern states, Punjab Haryana, are in the borders of Pak, Himachal, Sikkim do not have the geographical advantages of constructing IT companies. Same goes for Bihar as it is earthquake prone region. So companies choose Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, etc. People from Hindi speaking states who wish to work in IT companies, move to Southern states. People who have interest in journalism, central government jobs, banking , etc easily find jobs in North. Again , when an outsider moves to Southern states, if he wishes to learn the local language, well and good, if not then u can't say NORTH INDIANS SHOULD LEARN THE LOCAL LANGUAGES. They moved there, because they deserved the jobs and qualified for the role. The only thing u can expect is these outsiders not imposing their language on the localites and respecting the norms of the society.

EU language policy is based on respect for linguistic diversity in all Member States. The EU has 24 official languages and the European Parliament accepts all official languages as working languages. India is a similar union of states, If the government fail to respect or unable to represent every Indian state and its language, it is not qualified to rule the country.

Hindi and English are working languages (link Language) It is ideal to know both but not compulsory. Either one of the language should be known to communicate between different states. SO Northern & Western India prefers Hindi as the link language and Southern India prefers English. End of the story.

I watched this video as I am starting to learn Tamil for my Tamil Partner. I am european, more precisely from Germany. In Europe we usually learn several european languages to communicate with eachother. Mostly We speak english with people from other european countries, in the eastern Parts of Europe it is russian. Why? Because These nations invaded parts of our continent at one time and became predominant in larger regions, and because English is THE world language. Do we try to impose German to the other countries as we now have no english speaking country in the EU anymore? German is the mostly spoken language in the EU, but other nations would definitely rebel against our language as they already feel (and rightly so) that Germans have too much influence in the EU. In the contrary Geans so often speak several european languages. So I can't really See any Points for imposing Hindu (as it would seem Like Just another colonizers language to Many Indians). Looking forward to be able to speak some Tamil at some Point in time 🤩

It is not possible to learn every language

      1. you can speak hindi for whole india
      2. you can have your regional language as well
      भारत में 1000 से अधिक भाषाएं हैं
      हर भाषा को सीखना संभव नहीं है।
      यही कारण है कि हमें 1 सामान्य भाषा की आवश्यकता है

2 a language should fill confidence and should give freedom to our mind so that we can think freely and that s key too lot of inventions you want an eg lot Indian inventions are from South Indians not north people eg non other than APJ Abdul Kalam even though he’s Muslim he embraced Tamil culture,

6 solution is seek out and tell original history, let all Indians know the truth and don’t make or impose any language or make 2-3 language as national language including a south language and mainly when you show some gratitude and respect to our people and culture na then you don’t have to impose anything they ll accept with open arms….

There is no such word dating in our regional languages. Because we do not live together before our marriage. Regional languages represents our culture. One more benefit of speaking in our regional languages, our regional languages has tongue twisting nature, we live in canada, we were teaching our language Tamil to other kids. We found out that the kids those who speak indian regional languages first are able to pronounce any language with great clarity. But if kids start speaking english first , then they cannot pronounce any language . The kids those who speaking english alone , then their tongue is flat , is not ready for other languages. Even in tamilnadu, those days everyone learned both Tamil and sanskrit , so tamilans good in learning any language and they spoke English with great clarity. The other day when Mr. Jayashankar spoke about India's neutral stand and abstention in UN meetings, his speech was so clear, I understood every word he spoke. I didn't know that he hails from Tamilnadu. He was fluent in English and was able to communicate the content so well. Everyone in the Parliament listened so attentively.
Suppose, Mr. Jayashankar should not speak in English, as per Amit Shah's logic, because it is a foreign language. Then in Parliament Jayashankar would have communicated only in Tamil, because he doesn't know Hindi. How many Parliamentarians, attending the session, would have been able to understand the content of his speech, let alone the general public all over India?
We need not denounce English, because it is a foreign language. In fact, it is English that unites the people in the whole of India, as experiene shows. Almost every State in India has its own official language. It is important to understand the content. A particular language, for that matter any language, is only a means of communication.
I like to share the following without intending to offend anyone.
Transport is a means of moving from one place to other. People are free to choose their mode of travel depending on the availability of financial resource, time, purpose and priority. People will make their choice.
Now, Amit Shah wants to raise the status of Hindi to that of an aeroplane, and insists that everyone should travel only by that mode. Reaching the destiny is more important. Let people choose the mode of travel. Amit Shah may have his logic, but how practical it is for the whole of India, which is multicultural, multi-linguistic, pluralistic, and with so much diversity?

Let us not get swayed away by random emotions but rather have the discussion or debate based on 'facts' and 'ethics':
    (1) Based on discrimination:
The attempt from any Indian national Government of the day to declare Hindi as the 'national language' will make non-Hindi speaking people be treated by the Hindi-speaking people as 'second-class citizens in their own country. Hindi is NOT the mother tongue of the majority of Indians. Although English is a foreign language to Indians it acts as a good leveler in the sense that it is a foreign language to all Indians - it is foreign both to Hindi-speaking people as well as to non-Hindi-speaking people and so, everyone gets an equal opportunity to compete at anything. Replacing English with Hindi will give a massive advantage to Hindi-speaking people and this will be unfair to non-Hindi-speaking people. English is a neutral language and avoids caste/race discrimination that happens in Indian languages.
    (2) Based on practicality:
Hindi practically has NO use in science or technology. Nobody can become a doctor/engineer/technician etc by just knowing Hindi. Hindi is just for entertainment through the overrated Bollywood insanity. English on the other hand is widely accepted on the global level and has more value to science, technology, communication, etc than any other language. English works as a link language practically. I have typed this comment on TH-cam entirely in English and people all over the world on social media communicate mostly in English.
    (3) Based on uniqueness:
If the number of speakers is the main criterion for the greatness of a language then the 'crow' should be designated as the national bird of India and not the peacock or the 'dog' should be made the national animal of India and not the tiger. It is the uniqueness of a language that makes it great and not some population factor. If someone says that many people speak in Hindi in terms of some 40% of speakers then he/she fails to look the other way the majority of Indians (60%) don't communicate in Hindi. Hindi can mostly be read and understood only in North India, and probably in Nepal. But Tamil, on the other hand, is already official in Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, and to some extent in South Africa. Also, Tamil, Telegu, Malayalam, Kannada, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Odiya, Bangla, Aasami, Urdu, etc. are classical languages and have been in existence in history way before Hindi.
    (4) Based on imposition:
After independence, the states in India were formed on a linguistic basis. We have a Maharashtra for Marathi-speaking people, a Gujarat for Gujarati-speaking, a Tamil Nadu for Tamil-speaking people, and so on. Then why does the Hindi belt have many states even when they say that they have Hindi as one language? That is because the influence of Rajasthani, Awadhi, Maithili, Marwadi, Bhojpuri, Santhali, etc. languages was mowed down because of Hindi imposition and they were designated to the level of just 'dialects' of Hindi. Marathi used to be written in Mudy lipi (script) in the past but because of the Devnagri script imposition back in the 1950s for a set of languages like Hindi, Marathi, Konkani, Nepali, Sanskrit, etc. Marathi, Konkani, Nepali lost their influences. The only vague defense BJP gives is the mudy script of Marathi was continuous in nature and would have been difficult to get that type-written on the press - which is an irrational argument because the same press could typewrite all the other languages like Punjabi, Urdu, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil, Telegu, Odiya, Bangla, Aasami, etc. and somehow just could not do the same thing for Marathi? Marathi people are facing the crisis for the reason that they are struggling to have a script for their own official use and the average Hindi person thinks that Marathi is some kind of a 'dialect' of Hindi. How ridiculous! Marathi historically came into existence way before Hindi was 'formed'.
    (5) Based on the two v/s three language formula:
The two-language formula 'Mother tongue language + English' is sufficient. Three language formula doesn't make sense. What the 3-language formula does is that it wants the non-Hindi speaking states to have three languages -> mother tongue for within the state communication + English for communication outside the state to the rest of the world + Hindi for communication within India with others who don't understand English. This makes the Hindi belt to be selfish to just have one language Hindi as they will not bother to study English. Why should someone from Tamil Nadu or Bengal or Maharashtra have English to communicate with the rest of the world and Hindi to communicate in India when the same Indians can try to understand basic English? English is sufficiently practical as a secondary language.
    (6) Based on the existing concept of India:
Hindi imposition will destroy the unity in diversity of India. There had been riots over this controversy since 1937, the 1950s, and the 1960s, and might happen now or later in the future. The idea of one nation, one election, one party, one uniform, one language, etc. all this oneness stems from the BJP's RSS ideology which was inspired in turn by Nazi Germany. It is harmful, racist, religiously intolerant, linguistically chauvinistic, and detrimental in nature. Tamil Nadu will be the first state in India to secede from the Union of India if Hindi imposition ever becomes a reality.
    (7) Based on statistics:
Migration for work happens largely from the Hindi belt to the non-Hindi speaking states and not vice versa. So, now you see how grave the problem is in the Hindi backward belt. Non-Hindi speakers' tax money is taken to promote Hindi and a less or negligible amount is spent on other languages. Also, why is the taxpayer's money spent more on the promotion of Hindi and less or negligible for other non-Hindi languages? 60% of the budget is spent on Hindi, 20% on Urdu; for Tamil, it is 0, Bangla it is 0, for other languages it is 0; why? This is an utter disgrace!
    (8) Based on pride and politics:
Pride goes before a fall and the average Indian is somehow blind to this and ironically remains to be. It makes Indians not only hypocrites but also narcissistic to its own neighbors. This is because the current BJP government is systematically trying to keep brainwashing the mass illiterate Indians on the internet through the IT cell and in the open rallies. The current BJP government is heavily influenced by the RSS. Before World War II, the RSS leaders admired Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini. Golwalkar took inspiration from Hitler's ideology of racial purity. The RSS since its formation opposed joining the independence movement against the British rule of India. Excessive pride will cause India's downfall. No wonder the RSS had its roots in Nagpur within Maharashtra (Golwalkar, Savarkar, Godse, Hegdewar, etc. were Marathis) and is now making the average Maharashtrian behave diplomatically two-faced as some kind of an illogical balance in the policy of appeasement for vote bank politics. Donald Trump in the USA, Scott Morrison in Australia, and Boris Johnson in the UK caused a lot of problems due to right-winged politics. People over there realized the mistake of voting for them and then overthrew the governments and brought center-left progressive governments back to power. In India, it is a big shame that people here are still mostly illiterate, blindly religious, and emotional.
    (9) Based on nationalism:
India as a nation is different in concept compared to European nationalism. Nations in Europe have their own national languages because the influence of other languages in their own countries was moved down by a single language when the boundaries were drawn. In the European Parliament, they still have English as a practical link language. Some people state that China, Russia, Japan, etc. take pride in having their own national languages and not English and rely on translations all the time in dealing with other countries and not using English. But the communist crazy countries or the workaholic nations treat their own people in their own countries in un-democratic ways just to somehow economically prosper by degrading human rights. One-China policy is degrading Tibet, Taiwan, Xinjiang, and Hong Kong. Japan's workaholic culture is straining the working-class people in the name of pride. Germany was the victim of Nazi ideology in the past. People all the time cannot rely on memory or machine translations/translators and waste time when the same would come naturally in simple communication by knowing basic English. Even the Chinese have started to aggressively teach their citizens English. India had prospered before on global level only because of English and now we are going back.
    (10) Based on globalization:
Once upon a time, there was a colonial power but it's all in the past. The English people are called 'gentlemen' for a reason - although colonial they were not as racist as Germans. The British Empire in the 1920s was the largest empire in the world at any point in history. Whether you like it or not like it - it happened and people all over the world were either directly or indirectly influenced by it. The UK, the USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand have the English Anglosphere with more geographical areas for economic opportunities. The USA is still the major global power and the internet in the 1990s popularized English even more leading to an increase in the demand for globalization. Nationalism has become useless in the sense that no country can be self-dependent now and the 'Athmanirbhar Bharat' strategy of the BJP government is notorious in the sense that being self-dependent will first hypocritically rely on Russia, USA, etc. for defense from China OR it will replenish the resources of the non-Hindi states to feed the needs of the impoverished Hindi states.

6 solution is seek out and tell original history, let all Indians know the truth and don’t make or impose any language or make 2-3 language as national language including a south language and mainly when you show some gratitude and respect to our people and culture na then you don’t have to impose anything they ll accept with open arms….

I remember one panel discussion in which Chithra Mudgal, a writer stubbornly talks in Hindi eventhough she is well versed in English. What I want to add is that, Hindi as a language have its origin within 300 years. In that way, her forefathers could have been speaking some other native language. Isnt that true that, she lost her heritage on the way, a person without address?, an orphan?. Another gimmick is that, all regional languages more or less similar to Hindi is counted as a dialect of Hindi, thereby boosting the percentage of Hindi speakers. Isnt it a language terrorism and treason towards that languages which are much older and richer than Hindi culturally?. If thats so, add all south Indian languages together, because southerners can understand each other with little effort than hindi, for which only sign language can help them. Moreover, people of any language have to understand an important thing, that each language is an archeological and anthropological treasure, that preserved your identity for generations and will preserve it for generations to come. For eg., the 'Sangam' classical literature in Tamil describes the western border similar to Thar desert and Northern borders with white snow Yak ruminating under its favourite tree. Even many place names in Tamil Nadu exists in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Central Asia where native people do not know the meaning, but the Tamil literature has.(Ref: Talks of Balakrishnan IAS, Orissa)

What advantage hindi will give to a south indian? How many languages a South Indians want to learn ? How may North Indians learn a south language apart from just saying "we are ready to learn". The North Indians comes to South India for job, but they are expecting south Indians to speak in their language apart from learning a south languages. If someone want to learn Hindi by own interest let him learn as the same way the north indians learns a south language.
North Indian's can learn Hindi very fast because there are similarities. Similarly south Indian's can learn other south langauges very fast. On the other hand it is difficult to learn Hindi by a South Indian and a south indians language by a North Indian

Dear, don't oppose just for the sake of opposing, 1st let's understand the issue here in north east.
Kodagu is a language doesn't have its own alphabet, they use kannada script. Tulu script has disappeared with time, they use Malayalam script in Kerala, kannada script in Karnataka. Santali lnguage doesn't have ots own script, they use Devanagari script in Jharkhand, Odia script in Odisha. Koshali language doesn't have its own script, they use Odia alphabets.
In North east each state have 3-4 languages. Many of them doesn't have separate alphabets for notation except a few. During British rule they imposed english alphabets to write those languages. But many pronunciation doesn't real match with english making a very difficult notation with english alphabets. Now either they have to use Bengali/Assamese alphabate (both are same except 1 or 2 letters), which they mostly won't like or they have to use Devanagari script. As devanagari script has distinct alphabate for each pronunciation, so it is more preferable than english. So they preferred devanagari script. They could've used Odia alphabets if the they were inhabitants of Odisha, they would've used Tamizh alphabets if they were in Tamilnadu.
Even Marathi language is written with devanagari script. Does that mean they are all Hindi. Hindi is just another child language, which adopted Devanagari script for its writing.
    Hope you understood the point.

Everywhere in the World Counties are United because of their one Language Identity and of course Language is a parameter of Unity. We always have been fighting among each other because of Culture differences and more importantly different Languages that we speak. Todays Bharat needs only one Language to remain United or else we would again fight and get divided I am sure of that. Different Languages means different cultures, different opinion and different histories which would surely become a reason of Conflict in years to come and then fight for Independence from Bharat. Why Hindi? Well because Hindi is a direct Descendant from Sanskrit. Pure Hindi is a basic evolution of Sanskrit and that it keeps Sanskrit alive. Other languages might be also children of Sanskrit but they are difficult to be spoken and represent a culture sect. While Hindi doesn't represent a culture sect but represent the Philosophy of Bharat Varsh and is like the eldest Child of Sanskrit. Pure Hindi should surely become the National Language of Bharat because it would help to keep Bharat United for years to come and stop the unstoppable division of this country again due to so many languages and culture divisions

That’s entirely your opinion. I don’t see Hindi as language which would beneficial to next generation. English has already been deeply rooted in our education and professional life’s. We don’t need to impose Hindi or any other language on anyone. If there is a need, then it will be adopted. Does not matter whether it’s Indian originated language or not, imposition would never work!! We should move on from one nation one language idea, we aren’t 🇨🇳..

@@praneethpuligundla - For better communication, we all have to accept one language that is hindi as an official language. Many peoples feel uncomfort in expressing their views and ideas in english or other language as they express better in hindi. As we all know that different countries have different official languages and they feel proud to speak their own language but why can't we?

@@praneethpuligundla - The Indian Constitution states that Hindi should be the official language of India. It should be in Devanagari script. Still, many regions are not ready to accept this fact.
Though India has 22 languages, Hindi is the most widely spoken amongst all. Hindi is the 5th most widely spoken language in the world.
Even before independence, Hindi was considered to be the official language. Today, English is a global language but it does not mean that we should adopt it. We should try to promote our own identity.
Around 75% of the country resides in villages where people are aware of Hindi mostly. It would be tough for these people to accept English as their official language.

All indian languages are national languages and Hindu can't claim to be the sole national language because it is spoken by a majority.
