not so much about it being hard but rather how the possibilities led to this. I remember when games were a mess to create, and took years to finish, even when they were quite simple. now people can just pop out an interactive, smart, and chunky pastime in a few hours.
I had the same game idea, and I'm so glad to see it fleshed out this well. I don't yet have the skills to make anything this good, but I really hope you decide to run with this game and publish it. Best of luck to you.
Yeah, we've gotten a lot of comparisons to Dandara, although it wasn't a direct inspiration. I think the major difference though is that our game has stuff for navigation between jumps (the attracters and repellers) and is much more slow-paced.
It is actually a crazy good applied game (aka serious game). This is fantastic for teaching kids the basics of programming in a fun way, yet stands on its own as a puzzle-esque game as well.
Roberto, you haven't played the game right? So how do you know that? Half an A press is pressing they key down but not releasing it or vice versa, since 1 A press is down and up together.
You mean the game that got rated "almost Nintendo like" in it's focus on a mechanic? That's about the highest accolade you can get from Mark. Well done.
Hey, nicely done! Getting up there at all is super impressive, haha. I hadn't ever made a game before, but I had a blast and was so excited that I had something to turn in! Have you made games before? Yours looks just a liiittle more polished than mine ;)

It's clear how passionate you are about games and it's really opened my eyes about some of the mechanics of them. Thank you dude, really love your videos
I used to do 48 hour film contests back before I started working professionally, that was crazy enough, but making an entire game in 48 hours??? Respect! Y'all are badass!
Shooter where you shoot in sync with a beat? Amazing. Say song is 5min long, you have a time limit for level. Put option to insert your own music and its amazing
So glad Allocation made the cut. The puzzle element of arranging healing rooms and minimizing hard rooms was so engaging. There is so much potential for depth like If you had to connect a sequence of key and boss rooms!
I'm really late but thanks for making this jam! I always wanted to participate in a jam and this made it possible! Was lots of fun to finally create a game and I'm happy I got in the video :)
I have seen other youtubers hosting game jams, none take the time to show/off analyse this many games and still manage to make it a very digestible video, good job ! PS: I considered entering but I wasn't very inspired...
It was an incredibly hard theme, that's for certain. But I kind of liked it for that (eventually). After several hours of smashing my head against the wall I actually came up with an idea that I never would have thought of otherwise, and it's one I think I'd like to try publishing someday.
Looking at GameJams really reminds me why I love videogames so freaking much! They can be so imaginative. Game Design by its own is a really beautiful art.
So Space Command 1980 is sort of like Typing of the Dead except it's a schmup. And Fireflies reminds me a lot of that one chase scene in the first Ori game, combined with that directional fling power he gets later on.
Gregory Hermie Petrola, exactly. It's not like Typing of the Dead. It's more about thinking than about typing. There was actually a game that better elaborated on that concept. Can't remember its name, but in that game you had to control multiple drones exploring abandoned spaceships. You had multiple functions for each drone (customizable) and you were also controlling the ship's doors. That one was hella fun actually.
I love all the effort and charm that's been put into these games, especially the 16 bit ones, fluid animation and solid gameplay with only 48 hours is something I thought would be difficult but all of these pulled them off and look like buyable indie titles already
This is one of the most inspirational videos I've seen in a long time. Seeing all this genuine creativity on display, and marveling at the clever ideas & ingenuity in the design of these games that were made over the span of a weekend makes me truly appreciate how special & versatile gaming can be.
In case anyone if wondering the game at 00:27 is called Nuggets II. Took me forever to figure out and find. Suggestion: Please always place a title card with the game name for entries that don't make the Top 20 Thanks for Hosting and Rating these!
I don't think such idea itself would make the game interesting, as games that rips your level off mid-way isn't super rare, and those additional challenges a game offers is kinda "you lost some mechanic and now deal with it". Both haven't been done in a gradual way though... But it's like, it's only good for story telling I think.
@@FlameRat_YehLon I agree that losing mechanics #feelsbadman . Now, starting off with all mechanics and all-powerful, and gradually having your powers become weaker in power (but otherwise remain unchanged) seems cool. Would make for some rather challenging endgame.
No I think you're right. Just an idea I had. Maybe give you like basic endgame traversal mechanics and take em away to make things harder or something. Like if in hollow knight you started out with everything and by the end all you could do was jump and slash.
Soo awesome! I'm always amazed how much creativity and inventiveness people have. The notion about there're no new ideas were obviously imagined by people who don't look hard enough ) Thank you for what you're doing )
This was very interesting. Astounding even. Hats off to those guys. And hats off to you too, Mark. Great video like always! Thank you. I can't help but wonder what else was hidden among these submitted hundreds of games.
The Jam was a lot of fun, and the Theme was great. Im currently planning a small GameJam myself and we will definetly try to choose an more interesting Theme because of this Jam.
This was a brilliant theme for a game jam. Probably the best I've ever heard of. Thanks for setting this up! Hopefully I'll be able to contribute to next year's jam :)
Picking 20 games must have been hard, some amazing games on this list, and I know of at least three other games that were also fun and interesting. Anyway, participating was fun, I hope I'll have a bit more time to spend on the jam next year than I had this year, but the experience of finishing up a game and adding some polish was very educational. Thanks for this opportunity!
If you're interested in these kind of things, there's hundreds of game jams like this every year. You could check out itch. io to play the games yourself.
@@milk_choc7889 thanks! I've been part of a couple 48 hour film festivals where teams are given a genre, a prop, and a line of dialog (i think) to incorporate. And also there was this art movement around town called Exquisite Corpse where artists would donate an unfinished piece and another artist would finish it. The creativity around all these things is amazing and inspiring!
Mark, I just started playing Darkest Dungeon, after your repeated recommendations of it. I'm super impressed by its presentation, can't believe it's an indie game!
I'm really glad to see that of the games I played, the 3 that I really thought deserved to "win" actually did make it into the top 20! I must give some of these others a try.
Heh. There's an Amiga game called Sleepwalker that features almost the exact same premise as this one, except there's still platforming done by the player. You control a dog trying to get a permanently sleepwalking kid safely through levels, blocking him from walking into enemies, kicking him across gaps and manipulating the environment to make a safe path.
Sleep Walker also seems very similar to Mario & Wario. In that game, you also control a character who helps another character who can't stop moving get to the goal.
There were few games with similar premise. I remember playing a flash game a long time ago, where you were a wizard conjuring sand to help sleepwalking character get somewhere. I googled it up and it's called Sandman
*Allocation* might be the base for a really interesting game. The closer of that idea i can think of is "Kingdom Hearts: Chains of memories" (GBA) or that last dungeon from "Zelda Skyward Sword" (Wii).
The bit about a Zelda dongeon is interesting. Because some of those games could be woven into a bigger game, in which the dongeons are all based around those interesting mechanics. The donjon crawler without weapon can be easily adapted, same for the slingshots games. Even the last one could be fitted in, with the hero being the guy in control of the robot.

Blows my mind how people can make games this fast that are not only functional, but creative and aesthetically pleasing.
Katze it’s not that hard. I only used 8 hours of the 48
