Man, seeing the response to this has been downright inspirational. It's so cool that one of us dang TH-camrs can actually facilitate amazing games getting made as opposed to just talking about them.
You know it feels a little weird that one of my favorite video game related youtubers watches the videos of one of my other favorite video game related youtubers. It's just odd since from my perspective both channels are of equal quality and equal ground but here you are with the rest of us in the comments section.
Do you think you could release this as a pack on steam like sega did with their genesis collection. Were each game is considered a separate dlc. Might be a route for game jams to expand their reach when it comes to the public. store.steampowered.com/app/34270/
The Genesis collection is a pack of fairly well polished and completed games. A game jam has many games that are bite sized, buggy, and incomplete, with little polish. I like the idea, as long as they aren't charging for it and have a disclaimer on the store page that they are incomplete, potentially buggy games that will probably never be updated. And some gamers may be upset if a dev then takes their game and polishes and expands the game and charges money.
Yeah it would most likely have to be free, and with tons of disclaimers. But alot of those game look more complete and polished then some of the junk valve is letting on steam and charging for. The genesis thing was more to show how they packaged it on steam as individual dlc packs to a main store entry, not really to compare polish and the like. Maybe something more like the basement collection would be similar idea. store.steampowered.com/app/214790/ Personally if people got upset because they release a feature complete version of what they did in a jam. I'd just shrug my shoulder and move on. Your getting dozens to hundreds of things to try out for most likely free and you knew what the pack was and was not going in.
Some concepts are just complete genious. I thought that I was getting bored of gaming, but when I see games like this my heart just starts pounding again and my desire to game comes back.
My game showed up in the B-reel at the beginning. That's good enough for me. But really, doing this jam has really inspired me to start trying to make games more often. Thank you so much, Mark, for organizing this. (Mine was Suzy and the Magic Forest, by the way)
Deus Ex Machina YOO, I remember that game from when I was a kid! It was a flash game beat em up right? I wonder if that's lurking around in some archive somewhere. I remember liking some dumb Scooby Doo game too..
Lil' Bane don't worry it isn't hard to find (which suprised the heck out of me)! You can still get to all the old CN games straight from their website's homepage!
Seeing these games as a gamer makes me so excited. As an aspiring developer it makes me incredibly competitive. Like how the hell did you guys do some of these in 48 hours??
X on Y I know I'm really late, but I don't think so. The point of a game jam is to make a game in 48 hours and there was no prize. I don't believe many people cheated themselves, maybe a few.
with the amount of games being showcased and developer names I personally don't remember any single one at all and I doubt many people do, so they don't even get much recognition. It's truly just a heartwarming event I think. Nothing anyone gains except self improvement and maybe some bonding.
I Want to say congratulations to everyone that participated. And honestly, all the games that Mark has shown in this highlight i would GLADLY play. From beautiful to quirky and certainly different, both the 2d and 3d ganes look AWESOME.
This is really the best game jam ever done. Especially since the "theme" was so open, yet managed to produce elegant design. Congrats to all who participated and to Mark!!
It honestly amazes me that so many developers were able to make this many games in such a short timeframe, and at this high a quality. Well done to all who were involved.
The artwork, creativity, and programming prowess of all these game devs are so inspiring! So many great games in such a short amount of time. I am floored
My friend and i feel honored that you put Orbital Punch under the top 20 picks! Now onto making it a complete game! it could really use some diverse level and enemy design.
I really don´t think so. There is a market for this kind of games, probably smaller than the one for AAA games, but still. Many of this games are great for a tablet or smartphone. And the indie community is also strong. In my case, I´m tired of everygame being the same. So when you see something new, like Inside/Firewatch/SuperHot, my love for videogames rise again.
This kind of games don't entertrain for too long in their current state, they would need more content and polish. This would make some amazing games, but on the other hand you don't know how long some of this mechanics will stay fun. If you increase content and play time it also have to give variation to the gameplay, else you offer to less.
Command Prompt looks pretty good. From all the games Mark picked, this one seems the best. Good job guys. Please make it harder, make more levels and release it on iOS/Android. I would play it nonstop.
Oh gosh, that's... that's really heartwarming! We were planning on working on it a bit more, so thank you so much for the push! I'll be showing this to our team ASAP :3 Thank you for the kind words and for the feedback! :D
Congratulations everybody... to Mr. Brown's top picks and everyone else because, WE MADE GAMES!!! I got to play a little more than a handful of these, Orbital Punch was one. Loved it! Cheers!
770 games and out game in top-20! Wow! Super cool! We think to made a full game from our jam-prototype! Thank you, Mark Brown. You inspiring us (developers) to make new things. You helping to understand what we made wrong and what we doing right. Thank you for what you doing. For people, who is not patron. If you'll be Mark Brown's patron he will give you some advices about what to read. It's very useful information, too!
I'm astound how many people not only came up with awesome unique ideas but also made their games look great in that short time. That's so... inspiring. I really should start learning game development...
This was my first Jam to be a part of - I learnt a whole bunch about games and managing my time well, I think I'll try and do one of these once a month in the future
Game Jams, one of the most exciting experience for a beginner Game Designer/SoundDesigner/Programmer/Graphist =D. Simple mechanics but lots of creativity.
Mark, that was awesome, I mean think about it those were just 48 hours Imagine all that creativity and hard work for at least 2 years and we could have a lot huge success. I can only send all of those developers my best wishes so that they can polish and refine their ideas into full commercial products. this helps the industry move forward so keep up the excellent work.
Even though my game was really bad, had basically no art, and was only kind of fun to play, I'm so thankful that I decided to participate. As an amateur game maker (just graduated High School), this was a really good learning experience that pushed me to create an idea quickly. Yeah, I made a game where you shoot to move, and there wasn't much else to it, but I had to learn how to actually make that system work on screen in just a few hours. I'm honestly someone who is quite insecure about how inexperienced I am with games, but this gave me a big confidence boost. Thanks so much Mark, for the videos, the jam, and everything.
Dirt410 Which one did you make? I'd like to try it. I made Aqua Ascent here if you're interested: thewojnartist.itch.io/aqua-ascent or itch.io/jam/gmtk-jam/rate/159453
+Dirt410 Felt the same way =D I was about to drop my game at the beginning of day 2, but after looking at the games that got released at that time I was like "Oh wow, I may actually win" so I continued working on it. Needless to say, it's been beat by almost all of the submitted games =D
please never stop making videos because of you i startet looking for work in game industrie and soon i will start studying 3d art your videos literally made me go chase my dreams and search a job that i actually like to do
As someone who participated in this jam, I can say that it took surprisingly little time to get the things I wanted in there. For me, the task sounds harder than it actually is. Then again, I have had several years of programming experience, so that might have helped.
Conceptualization of ideas is more difficult than actually making the game. When you know what you are doing, it becomes a hell of a lot easier than starting from absolutely nothing in a game jam. Sad me and my buddy's game didn't make it into the highlight reel, but considering it's state at submission, I am unsurprised. That and 770 entries oh my lord! I had no idea. That aside Effigy Assault is too good of an idea to put down so soon, especially since there is so much we were not fast enough to implement! Also, as a first Game Jam, this was so much fun! I can imagine how people could get addicted to this!
I wasn't expecting to get my game featured as it was really my first game, but seeing everyone else's was awesome! Loved participating in this, can't wait for the next one!
And while lots of devs were able to make so many brilliant games in such a short time, here at my university we're forced to make boring "has been done 1000 times with no special gimmick that sets it apart" games, what a bummer. Welp, can't be helped. Didn't play all the entries yet but some did inspire me in one or the other way. Thanks Marc for setting this up and every single one who helped making this jam such a memorable one.
What you're doing is so important and exciting for the Art form of games! Thank you for helping to create a learning revolution & a gaming revolution! Please keep up the great work! I'll be following & supporting you on Patreon and asking others to do the same!
Man, next time I'll be getting into a team, it was quite overwhelming but pretty fun anyways. Also I can't believe the ammount of skilled people who are here, it's really nice to see how people can come up with fantastic ideas and have time to actually make them into a game in that short period.
That was freaking awesome! I love some of these games, and can't wait to try out others in the batch. I would love to participate if there was another.
I'm a developer and I found out about itch.io and gamejams thanks to you! I just finished my first gamejam and I made a video about it. I can't wait for your next gamejam to join it !
This jam was so much fun. My game might have been sloppy and unpolished, and not gotten much attention, but wow was it fun to make a game and be able to talk to everyone else involved as well. If you do another one, be sure to give it a discord server again, even if it's a separate one from your patreon discord.
It was so fun developing in this jam (tomorrow starts Ludumdare!)! Too bad my game didn't show up in the video, if anyone wants to check out a super weird and unique puzzle game, check out Self Programming Bot. :)
770 GAMES. DEAR GOD. That's an insanely huge turnout, well done to this creative fanbase! Also, superfunkylightshow is very reminiscent of the death mechanic in the original Prey, where you shoot wraiths with your bow to gain health and spirit back as you come back to life. Not sure if intentional, but really cool to see that idea as a full game. That was probably my favorite way a game has ever handled death.
Keep it up! Remember that games and inspiration can come from nowhere! Refining your craft and making more progress in technique and skill will really come in handy when you come across THE IDEA. I always like to point out that Notch himself made multiple games before he was able to make Minecraft. Heck I still think that Notch has one of the starting videos for his plans in Minecraft (when the game was cobble, dirt and wood blocks) where a guy posted "I think this has potential, keep it up and keep developing it!" The indie scene is where it is at these days for game development. I have had more games where I play them for hundreds of hours compared to major triple A titles. I hope to see one of your games on Steam!
I really enjoyed participating in what was my first game jam. I just wish I could have taken off work to put more time into my game. Definitely going to get help from friends next time!
I'm looking forward to the next one! I've even learned how to produce and publish a game properly now (though by the time I did it was past the deadline)
Resize was a ridiculously cool concept and definitely my favorite, but I feel like it would take equally creative ideas to make it actually challenging.
That game that changed the "zoom of the world" was brilliant. I can see that being implemented in some crazy puzzle games. Plus, when is coop ever a bad thing.
Congrats to everyone who participated. I'm happy this was so unexpectedly well received. This really has inspired me and encouraged me to potentially start learning programming. But I will look deep at games I play for concepts found in Mark's videos. Anyone know the best way to learn and how to start?
These are really amazing considering how they were made. Many of them deserve to be full games. From the games shown in the video "Resize" has amazing potential in my opinion, I dunno how much you can do with that mechanic or if it wouldn't get old, but combined with some other "fourth wall breaking" mechanics it could be the basis of an amazing game.

I expect many didn't make them in 48 hours. The theme was so open-ended that a lot of people will have uploaded stuff they already had on the go.
it makes it a lot easier with a team and different mindsets

This happends when you don´t worry about selling, and focus on innovation, art and fun.
The sad reality though is that most of these games wouldn't sell. Precisely because they're so different and experimental.

If you do another one, be sure to give it a discord server again, even if it's a separate one from your patreon discord.
Wow, you guys are good at hosting record-breaking game jams.
This is amazing. I love innovative games and it's hard to believe so many people came up with so many unique ideas in 48 hours. Great stuff.
My game at 4:02 Blasterball, here is the link: petermilko.itch.io/blasterball
I'm glad it got in the video, it was hilarious how many times in the beginning of the stream he struggled to start it
I love all of you! Everyone who participated is awesome! Such imagiantion and talant is unbelievable! (And i only found out about this right now!)
I am really excited for another gamejam, my usual gamejam team were all on vacation.
This is really impressive. I mean, I have nothing else to say, I'm just too blown away by all this to think of anything else.
I got too busy too submit to this. But it was the thing that finally pushed me into starting a game. So thanks for that.
I had so much fun doing this! Thank you so much for doing this game jam!
6:36 Wow I made a very similar game a few years ago. It had the same idea of using thrust as a weapon.
Creativity at it´s finest, thanks a lot! Congrats to the creator and to you Mark for allowing it
Trouble in Space is giving me PTSD flashbacks to that underwater part of Earthworm Jim.
I wrote the music for Resize! Super cool that someone found a good use for my track.
Haha! Awesome! Thanks for making the track! It helped a lot! (:
Sadly no mention of mine but still I'm updating it weekly. If people like Fast-paced FPS try Neon Adrenaline.
Keep it up! Remember that games and inspiration can come from nowhere! Refining your craft and making more progress in technique and skill will really come in handy when you come across THE IDEA. I always like to point out that Notch himself made multiple games before he was able to make Minecraft. Heck I still think that Notch has one of the starting videos for his plans in Minecraft (when the game was cobble, dirt and wood blocks) where a guy posted "I think this has potential, keep it up and keep developing it!"
The indie scene is where it is at these days for game development. I have had more games where I play them for hundreds of hours compared to major triple A titles.
I hope to see one of your games on Steam!
My friend made 'super funky light show'! So proud of him :)
"Resize" was not the first game to use this "window technique".
I really enjoyed participating in what was my first game jam. I just wish I could have taken off work to put more time into my game. Definitely going to get help from friends next time!
I'm looking forward to the next one! I've even learned how to produce and publish a game properly now (though by the time I did it was past the deadline)
Insane these were all just made in the space of that 48 hours, some talent out there!
Holy moly! I can't belive my game was in top 20! You sir made my day
Resize was a ridiculously cool concept and definitely my favorite, but I feel like it would take equally creative ideas to make it actually challenging.
Hope this becomes an annual thing at the very least!
Okay, Resize looks amazing. I would love to see that game polished and completed!
This jam was such a blast to take part of :D
Resize looked so clever! Kudos to the dev for that one!
these things give me so many ideas
every one of these games genuinely inspired me :)
That game that changed the "zoom of the world" was brilliant. I can see that being implemented in some crazy puzzle games. Plus, when is coop ever a bad thing.
8:16 that looks pretty cool, and reminds me a bit of Four Sided Fantasy.
So many interesting mechanics, I really loved Resize and A Tale of Wind and Sea. Good job, guys!
I have played Orbital Punch because of this video. I enjoy the concept. :)
Congrats to everyone who participated. I'm happy this was so unexpectedly well received. This really has inspired me and encouraged me to potentially start learning programming. But I will look deep at games I play for concepts found in Mark's videos. Anyone know the best way to learn and how to start?
Games like those make me grin at how ingenious their concepts are and kick myself because I wouldn't have thought of them.
I just keep watching these for some reason
