- Hello, this is my first video in a while!
Before anything, I want to thank and welcome everyone who has followed me since my last video. When I started filming this tutorial, I was only at 20 subscribers and now as I am typing this, i have 275 of you :')
I really wanted to post this much earlier but it took so much longer than expected because I currently have a contract job which left me with little time and energy to complete this. Anyway, I hope you will find this useful! When I first got to learn punch needling, using it on my tote bags was something I was excited to try and see how it turned out.
This is a simple tutorial on how to give a makeover and fresh new look to all your plain tote bags! You do not need to be an expert in punch needling; all 3 methods use the very basic technique of punch needle. Depending on how you apply and combine them, you can already make many different kinds of artworks on your bags.

It gives great insight on what kind of needles will work with what kind of fabrics, as well as what to look out for when deciding.
For this project, it is the first time I am using rectangular plastic hoops! I think I still prefer using the round wood ones. If you would like to try them for yourself, they are really cheap. I bought them as a set here:

it ended up being my favourite too ^^ needle size 2.5mm! i used cotton yarn, except for the blue (cotton blend)

Hi! I’m wondering where u bought ur punch needle? It’s smaller in size than the regular right? I tried this with the regular but i’m hving no luck. I also bought like a size 16 but the yarn wont get in 😭😭😭 i guess ur punch needle is perfect in size for canvas
hello K! sorry i tried searching but cant find it. i did find a similar one (link below) which i believe you can also find it on amazon. otherwise, a lavor punch needle should work too. if you dont wish to purchase another tool, just use your current one on your monks cloth and then cut it out and fabric glue it onto your canvas bag - that works too :)

Hellow! Is it possible to use a tufting gun on the tote bag or will it be damaged?
hello!! i would not recommend using a tufting gun as most totes uses fabrics with weave that do not allow as much give that is needed for tufting. secondly, given how the gun works, you wont be able to tuft directly on the tote without deconstructing the tote bag first!

Hello, how do you make sure that the threads won't come off?
hello! generally the weave of the fabric itself would be enough to hold the threads in. but i would recommend ironing on a backing (like those used for embroidery patches) to the inside of the bags especially if you'll be using it often to prevent any snagging. you can also apply a layer of fabric glue but it might stiffen the fabric.

Hi! Super nice craft! Just curious if when u wash the bags, will the thread loosen too? Can we knot it at the start and at the end?
thank you Kay! ive only hand-washed it so far and they turned out ok! i did knot my threads for the 2nd bag ('not today' line art) actually as i was also worried they wouldnt hold as tightly compared to the other two. another way you can secure the threads if you're worried, is to apply fabric glue behind but it may stiffen the yarn/fabric.

hi! i've not tried so i wouldnt be able to advise. but if you do, i would definitely recommend putting it in a wash bag and use the cold water setting and delicate cycle.

hello Bella! yes the black one is just your regular canvas tote bag! as for the white one, i think it is 100% cotton

most tote bags should work, but I would recommend one that is sturdier to start with!

I just got into punch needle after using a beginner kit and i want to do more so i went to buy monk cloth
I actually have lots of tote bags at home T_T
ahh you can still use them for other projects! if not, you can also punch and cut them out and paste/sew onto your tote bags like iron-on patches :)
@@ayecandy_ there was no monk cloth in the store so i bought burlap but I'm not fond of the texture and smell actually
so i use an unused tote bag to punch a coaster but the fabric kind of rips off :(
any suggestion? should I find a tote bag that is a bit thicker? or should I just use burlap cloth...

@@Doongi2 oh, hmm it could be because your punch needle is too thick for the fabric of your tote or the fabric of your tote is just too tightly woven, so the needle makes a hole in your bag, rather than loosening up the weave to make way for your yarn. if you have a tote bag that is not tightly woven/constructed, you can try again. but if not, i think it might be easier for you to just use the burlap cloth. it could actually make a good practice piece first!
