I bought a 2019 Miata RF GT last week in automatic form. I am a longtime manual person. I find the paddle shifting gives me the feel and control. I cannot heel-toe but for street driving and traffic the auto is fantastic.

The M to the left of D on the shifter is for the manual mode which lets you drive the car like a manual transmission. Other cars that have sports mode have this feature such as the Toyota Corolla SE/XSE

It’s the handling and nimble feeling that makes it fun so the automatic does NOT detract from driving enjoyment for me! Plus it’s easier in
P traffic, hills and frees up your hands for drinking coffee or water in traffic.

Love the automatic; live in the city, so shifting all the time is not my cup of tea. I have carpal tunnel in both hands, so I'm over my gear shifting days, and do NOT miss it.

I work for a car manufacturer. We don't allow for more than 3 trips through the spray booth. The vehicles is scrapped if it goes through a 4th time. The goal is only one trip. The reason for scapping the body after 3 coats is because the more layers of paint the more easy the paint will chip. The best paint job is one coat and that is or goal. That's the strongest and most resilient to stone chips

I had a 2020 manual in the past but wanted the auto this time so the wife could easily drive it as well. And honestly after owning a ton of manual transmission sports cars I'm kind of looking forward to taking it easy also lol

automatics used to be slow things that was more likely to break. just as they figured out how to make automatics work right, CVT & dual clutch came out to make the argument even more confusing not to mention electric cars. the auto in the ND is a good unit, the auto in the NA is a common failure point.

My family had a 1971 Pontiac Lemans with a 4 - speed shift on the floor. It was a stout car to drive. It was fun tho but we sold it in 04 to a guy begging us to sell it I kinda wish we would of kept it cause it was still like new when we sold it. It was one of the best cars ever made with the 350 2 baral V-8. It wasn't fast but it felt it and would spin the tires power shifting it to 2 nd gear. Nothing ever went wrong but then there wasn't anything to go wrong it just had a heater and an am radio. But alot of vehicles where like that back in the good ole days lol but getting back to manual transmissions my parents bought me a new 93 5 speed Ford Escort GT. I made sure it was ordered with every thing you could get with it. Power moonroof ac, cruise etc. Black with grey int. It was lovely to drive and beautiful to look at. It was was good because the GT version from 91 to 96 had the Mazda 1.8 DOHC 16 valve 4 cylinder. I kept it from 93 to 19 and sold it. Nothing went wrong with that car either just timing belts were changed and the front struts and that was it. It had 225,000 miles when I sold it and still ran like new. Original clutch everything. It was a fun fun car also. 0 to 60 was 8.0 and it would hit 120 top speed. It was fast back then but now would seem kinda slow compared to today's cars. The stick shift was so very fun and made most cars faster than automatic cars and trucks. Stick shift cars seemed to be a common thing in cars back in the 70s and 80s and then they slowly started to vanish. It's quite sad in a way I guess people don't want or like them. I remember alot of people had trouble learning how to drive a stick but it was as easy as driving an automatic to me anyway. Well another thing I basically wrote this is because I love this color Miata and how the whole car just looks. I really like Mazdas to I think they are very reliable and don't get the credit they deserve. After seeing this Miata it is making me want one now lol. Guess I could get one to go with my Lexus?!

I've driven my dad's 5MT Camry a few times, and I don't think I'd like to commute to work every day with a 3rd pedal. If I could afford a weekend convertible, though, I'd probably force myself to get the hang of that clutch pedal.

Or C, you want your wife to enjoy the new MX-5 and she refuses to drive a manual.
    Still fun.
In fact, most of the folks of the local Miata group drive automatics.
But I still miss shifting gears but love my wife a bit more. If she is reading this, a whole lot more [but we know]

I bought an automatic Mustang because of my ADD-Autsm... In video games/sims when I turn on Manuel much less manuel with clutch I will forget to shift... I can do it but I must focus on it and I much rather focus of driving then mess with the transmission.

You won't forget to shift a manual car. The engine's sound and feel will clue you in that you need to shift. It's a lot different from playing a game. You get a feel for it pretty quickly.

  • @dannyphamous

Trust me, definitely test drive the auto - it is breathtaking lightweight 2300lb rwd fun, the paddle shifters were cool, then buy the manual. I wasn't sure on the ND at first. Loved my NA and NC miatas. Wanted a new car (NC got totaled, was driving an automatic IS250c) test drove every fun affordable car in 2020. Tried a ND1 manual, tried a ND2 manual RF and S/T. Drove a ND2 automatic base and fell in love, maybe I was rusty? it was so amazing and I saw so much fun potential in the ND - so I decided to get the manual ND2 which is now funner than the auto for me.

I love your reviews. Long time watcher. But genuinely curious why the one thing you don’t talk about or show is the driving.. no pulls
No example of the automatic transmission going through the gears..
just seems like it’s an exterior / interior review more than anything

    • @ShootingCars
      @ShootingCars  ปีที่แล้ว +8

Pulls are hard to show. I mostly film on public roads, where there are speed limits and rules. Whenever I’ve posted a “street pulls” I get comments saying I’m driving recklessly. If I don’t post street pulls, people ask where they are. There’s plenty of other channels where you can see an ND doing a pull so I’ll leave the liability to them. Thanks for the support!

The automatic shifts faster than a manual especially in sport mode or with the paddle and shifter. It doesn’t do hole shots. I’m not going to drift. And then I can always go full auto and chill. Since I’ve driven manuals since the 60s it’s annoying. Young guys like push the pedals and throw the shift around. It feels cool.

I did enjoying letting the steptronic auto shift at the end of the rev range. I was just curious if the Mazda was a steptronic automatic transmission?
