I have reshaped a few of my felt and straw hats but I recently just got a unblocked fur felt from a friend and might try my hand at blocking it at home here for fun. - just curious do I need to make a block that is my current hat size or are hats normally blocked on a universal size and then shrunk/shaped down to specific sizes afterwards? Thanks love your channel.
My grandfather came to the US in 1913 at the age of 13. He survived by shining shoes and blocking hats. Is this something that was done only to make hats or was it something done to fix or refresh hats? Would he have used the same kind of tools you show in this video?
You can reshape or refresh hats that way! When I worked in a costume shop we would always make new hats out of old, crumpled ones. If it's wool or fur it can be reshaped several times
Haha I remember when I blocked my first hat... on a foam block... before realizing you can’t steam wool felt... hours of frustration and dark thoughts for no reason...

find an old (really old...) hatter who has all that stuff, then keep following him around till he croaks, and then get all his stuff.

When do you add stiffener ? Before blocking?

What happens to wool felt when steamed? Does it leave marks?
