I’ve had the same Stetson that I bought when I was 17. 14 years later it still is in great shape and has never lost its original shape, even after plenty of wear, tear and falls.
I have a Stetson and while the $300 price tag seemed a bit much at the time, I can say that not only is it extremely comfortable to wear, and fits wonderfully. It's surprisingly light weight and durable for what some would consider a rather "big hat".
My dad has had the same Stetson Del Norte since 1988. It’s been through hundreds if not a a thousand hunting trips, with rain, sleet, snow and sun and it still has its shape, without a rip or tear. I got mine in 2018, hopefully I can make it last as long as he’ll make his last.
Indiana Jones hats aren’t Stetsons. His hats were made by Herbert Johnson’s in London. Stetson did make replicas of varying quality, but to call Indiana Jones hat a Stetson is incorrect.

Stetson hats are just so iconic and timeless, if cared for they can outlive the original owner and still retain its qualities from when it was new. I’ve always wanted to get one but I’ve never pulled the trigger on purchasing one. I’ll scoop one up someday.
You can often find them in all types of secondhand stores. I found a pretty good one in a goodwill and to my surprise it was the right size for my giant head. It cost me about 20$ as well. Just gotta keep your eyes peeled
I opted for a battered Stetson I found on eBay for $80 it’s a rough looking hat, but has been well loved. The seller claimed it was in the family for 50-60 years. No hat in my life has fit so well. The craftsmanship is evident and the patina these hats get is second to none.
I wear one of their crushable felt hats almost daily, and have for about seven years now. Still looks and feels just as good as the day it did when I got it. I couldn't give less of a rip that it's got a "fancy" name (there's actually nothing on the hat at all that gives the name outside) but it's just really darn comfortable and long-lived.
There's two ingredients to brand success. Quality and recognition. Recognition comes at the cost of an earthy, functional reputation as high status generally means frilly and low function. It's the brands that want to last centuries that master a focus on quality in manufacturing while constantly seeking recognition and spotlight fame.
I did not know how expensive a Stetson really was. Mine was a fraction of the cost, but it is still custom made, made in America, quality material. I am surprised you did not sneak in a little bit of why the U.S. cavalry decided on the Stetson.
I’d wager a guess, the choice was made based on practicality, availability, and iconography; the design overall is perfect for the frontier, where there’s little to no shelter the wide brim protects the wearers head from the sun, and since it was waterproof it could function as a makeshift bowl, the felt also provided insulation and warmth during the colder months. Natural fibre clothing industries were at their peak during the time, making accessibility to the hats easy; combined that with the relatively low-cost at the time thanks to the robust fur trade from Canada, a soldier could easily fined a replacement when his Stetson had worn out. Finally the hat was a symbol of the west even back then, with it’s strong look and being an item synonymous with the word ‘frontier’ it was easily identifiable and became the staple of the U.S cavalry since it was unique among the many units of the military.
There is so much left out of this video it's ridiculous. I'd bet either this person or her editor ever saw a stetson until it showed up on the cover of those fashion mags.

That is really confusing to me why $2000 when an Akubra is around $500? They even make a couple of the us cowboy styles and not just the Australian stockman styles. Surely at that price point it is no longer a viable cost to be worn while doing farm work.
@@Margatatials , But who said his $2,000 hat was for “farm work”? At the start of the video they showed a hat for $5,000.. Not sure if you saw that? @@KentuckyHome fair point. I am Australian and literally every farmer I know owns at least 1 Akubra many have 2 I for everyday and one for church/formal wear it's a health and safety gear for farming. I always assumed that the classic cowboy hat made in felt was the us equivalent for the equivalent industry. Both made from high quality felt though it seams that beaver fur is much more expensive than Australian sourced rabbit fur for felting.
Its nice living down the road from the factory. They have an outlet store right next to it. They have most of their hats in there marked down slightly.
I use to be a line-haul truck driver. In Alberta, Canada back then (the late 90s), 2X beaver cowboy Stetson could cost over 2k dollars to 5k dollars. I was in the State of Missouri at a truck stop. The truck stop had a cowboy hat store attached. I went in and found a 5X beaver hat. Guess how much they were asking for it. They were asking 50.00 dollars for the hat. Well, I thought I would be stupid to not buy it. When I walked up to the girl at the till, I asked her "Is this an error?" "What do you mean?" she asked. I replied "It says this hat is 50.00 dollars" "Yes that is the correct price" she stated Not being a stupid man, I shutup and paid her the 50.00 and walked out of the store, filled with joy.
Not sure if you’re confusing prices. A 2x has never been 2k-5k. I bought a 100x for $1000 last year and their most expensive is the diamanté 1000x which costs $5000.
I've had mine for 35 years now. It's been rained on frozen enjoyed 95 ° days and when I brush it up it looks good as new. Quality has it's price but when you have something like that you realize what you get for your money.

The only thing I can think of it that Stetson *technically* sells their own take on it on their website, which is called the "Temple Fedora". But honestly it doesn't look a lot like the hat from the film. It would've helped if the video clarified that Indy's hat is a fedora, not a cowboy hat. But yeah...Stetson never produced hats for those movies. It's really reaching to mention Indiana Jones here.
$5000 for a cowboy hat Fits perfectly with the upper class cosplay of being working class. Alongside the $70000 pickup truck that never hauls anything but the occasional 2x4
Working cowboys tend to buy custom hats. You want a 100% beaver hat if you make your living outdoors. Holds up to the weather better. 100% beaver felt hat will run $600 + depending on the Hatmaker.
I worked at this exact factory. I did the first weighing job, featured at 58 seconds. You weight the fur, spread on a separator where the fur is blown onto a wet rotating cone, the force adheres the fur into a long cone shape. Its removed and sent down the line.
Do you think the Price is right? Or is the mark up too much compared to production costs Lol I was thinking of buying one straight from the workshop from the beginning of the video

In August of 1999, I bought a Stetson pinched-front, in silver belly. It was marked as being 4 fur beaver. I've worn the thing every time I've left the house for nearly 24 years now, and it's still in one piece. So even though it shows it's age, I guess it's probably gonna out-last me. In re: Stetsons used by the military... During the Indians Wars, a 'fedora' or 'brimmed campaign hat' was an issue item but it isn't anymore and hasn't been since War Two. Nowadays cav troopers [myself included] buy their own Stetson as a private purchase item. Nevertheless, it's as much a uniform item in a cav regiment as your fatigues are and it's an ass-whoopin' offense to mess with another trooper's brim. While there are several companies that produce a 'regulation' cavalry hat, but I personally spent the extra money for a Stetson. It remains a cherished memento of my service with the 11th 'Blackhorse' ACR.
My Cavalry Stetson wasn't cheap and I earned it over 20 years ago during my Spur Ride when I was stationed with the 2nd Cavalry Regiment. Took me a while to get it properly shaped Cavalry style.
I purchased the Stetsons Diamante this year. It was THE hat I have been looking at for years now and with a lot of hard work I was able to pull the trigger and make the purchase. I love it!
I was an 11B Infantryman in the US army stationed at fort hood, Texas. 1st cavalry division. We were given the option to wear a black stetson with our dress uniform instead of our beret, and under certain circumstances with our ACU’s. You had to buy your own stetson though, and it had to be within certain regulations. Pretty cool honestly
I have a Stetson fedora style that I bought at Value Village for $7.00. I use it when I gig. It's comfortable and very high quality. I was very fortunate that it fit me. Stetson hats don't show up in thrift shops very often.
They had a large factory in Philadelphia up to the late 70's. Had their own hospital and housing. You had to wear a hat to work every day back then. Heard they were a great company to work for years ago. Nice vid.
I love tradition culture and manufacturing, it’s the legacy of our forefathers and defines our roots. I’m not into cowboy hats but I have two pair of boots wich are with me for over 30 years and are of extraordinary quality, comfort and timeless design, same as my italian shoes or a british gentleman umbrella. In the long run quality is cheaper and more sustainable. Thanks great grandma for the advice that cheap buys twice
Most of the men in my family own cowboy boots. Both for dress and just every day life. I just ordered/purchased my first pair in a few years but I’ve bought more than my fair share over my lifetime. Lol. This will be like my 3rd current pair so to speak. Lol. They last so long all you have to do is service them once in awhile
You really can tell a great hat from a good hat. I have a good hat- it does the trick but it’s not butter. I think it’s kinda amazing that instead of outsourcing this part of production, they choose to do it themselves. And even then- when you buy a hat, usually you have to shape the crown and the brim yourself. Very cool process
My grandfather would only wear Stetson hats. He loved them and always took good care of them. He’s the reason why I love them too. They’re really nice quality and I have never noticed any damage from the one I have after plenty of times of it being crushed. They’re pretty damn good
My dad wore a Stetson. We had relatives visit from out of state and one of them said to my dad "That's a nice cowboy hat" My dad replied "It's not a cowboy hat, it's a Stetson." I get it now.
Aye, they're on another level. But also, when I was at a hat store and trying one on, I called it a cowboy hat when I was talking to my buddy who was in there with me, and the shop owner said that it ain't a cowboy hat, that it's more like a fedora with a different top.
I’ve never been a fan of cowboy hats, except for the last year. I started to love them & even wear them. I wish more people did, I think they’re just so nice looking.
I think they're really situational, in the coastal town I live in California, the only people to wear them are the people that pick the fruit and vegetables in the fields. But I hear in bigger Texas cities, many people wear them.
I have my grandfather’s gray tweed Stetson Newsy cap. The interior leather skull band has gotten so brittle, it’s cracked & broken like old cardboard. But, I was told that old leather subjected to decades of sweat would have no doubt been the cause. I’ve thought about having it repaired. But, my grandfather has been gone for 30+ years, yet it still smells like the Old Spice and witch hazel he used in his hair that bleached & faded out the silk lining. But, what makes his hat even more special is that it was a gift to him from one of his closest friends when they were young, Al Capone. We even have a photo of them standing on the Michigan St. Chicago river bridge, wearing it.
As someone who does not live in the southern states, it is wild to me that they have such a high demand for these hats. I've probably seen a couple dozen people wearing cowboy hats in my entire life.
They're all over the midwest. Evidently you've never been outside of a city... There's these people called farmers and ranchers that tend to wear them a lot. Those are the people that make what you call food...

I have a Stetson and while the $300 price tag seemed a bit much at the time, I can say that not only is it extremely comfortable to wear, and fits wonderfully. It's surprisingly light weight and durable for what some would consider a rather "big hat".

Indiana Jones hats aren’t Stetsons.
His hats were made by Herbert Johnson’s in London.
Stetson did make replicas of varying quality, but to call Indiana Jones hat a Stetson is incorrect.

True. It's also made from rabbit fur. Not mink and beaver.

Enlighten us
@@layzy24 Que? Please, enlighten me on this.

There is a large format book telling the history of Stetson with lots of photos. Publication was delayed I think. Can’t wait for it to get published. See ‘The Cowboy Hat Movie’ for a deep dive into how Stetson defined the American West.
A Stetson is like a Rolex, only a few of us have them.
And many have Rolex'es and Stetson's made in China that look like the real deal and cost fraction.
@@DarkGT fake stuff is for fake people 🤥
@@jamespalsson746 or poor people.
@@DarkGT there are plenty of affordable options instead of getting a Rolex. Doubt it'd be different with hats. But if having a fake branded Chinese copy products are important to poor people ...🤷
How can you say that only a few people have Stetson hats? They sell a lot of them. Are you trying to impress us, or just yourself?
I honestly like that hat 🎩 I’d be down for one
I never felt a felt like the felt I had ever first felt.
Incredible way on making a hat! I would prefer one, one day. A bit expensive but likely worth and look timeless!
Spring for a Cody James or Master Hatters of Texas. Good hats for the money.
It's the only brand of hat that I'll wear bought my first one in 82 and haven't bought anything but stetson since and I've worn out a few of them
Over the years I’ve own 5X, 10X, 100X, and now a 200X Stetson hats. You buy them once and own them for life.
A bit sad that no one wears hats anymore
What? People wear hats all the times
@@bladeecity129 That depends on were you live. I rarely see anyone wearing hats. It's such a shame. Hats are cool.
No more horse🤣
I have my hat on on my driver's license
Many of us do in Texas
Impressive work
Always amazing to think back , how did they figure all this out !
I learned something
I've had a stetson ever since 2002, still looks just as good as the day it came in the box. Easily one of my best purchases next to my gold bullion collection
I wear Stetsons now. Stetsons are cool 🤠
No you don't
I love watching how items are made even if they are a product I would never want. You couldn't pay me to wear a cowboy hat lol
They’re known for their cowboy hats but Stetson actually makes all sorts
got two stetson hats, granted both on the cheaper side, but still absolutely fantastic hats. definitely worth the price
Got a stetson when I was 15; 30 now and still looks decent. That's great considering how many times I've dropped it drunk. 🤣
2:00 Ma’am you’re not kidding, beaver ain’t cheap...especially after the divorce
2:41 imagine dressing up and thinking you have a big role in a upcoming video but end up only being a 3 sec feature lmao
That's how they dress everyday
@@supersix-four9509 1) it was a joke and 2) my point still stands
What cosplay fetish are you talking about...
I picked out a Stetson when I was 12. Since then it’s been all over the world, from the fjords in Kiruna to the valleys to Petra.
Over a decade later it’s still as strong now as back then.
I dont own my stetson's because someone else does , I own mine because I love them
You own them because you hate animals lol
@@gladitsnotme gladitsnotme when he finds out that by eating plants vegetables, he is stealing the poor animal’s food and is therefore killing animals!!! 😱😱
@@gladitsnotme lmao you know they don't kill animals for their fur anymore right? And that they have to be very well taken care of for their fur to remain in good condition and grow properly.
@@gladitsnotme I love animals. They taste great
Very amazing to watch the whole process and the high quality of products & techniques used to make these delightful cowboy hats.
I have already 8 Stetson hats in all colors matching with my dresses. And finally my dream Stetson Diamante 1000X is coming over the Christmas.
Ahh Stetson, the Rolex of felt cowboy hats. Love my open road
Even after watching the video I still want to ask the same question.
Is it really worth $5000?
Could you imagine criminals stop stealing cars and steal cowboy hats instead? 🤣🤣🤣
o i would. it will keep the funeral homes happy.
Chances are, if the guy can afford the hat, he'd shoot them lol
The $5000 model is one of the most expensive.
I got a very nice felt Stetson for $150. Of course, that was almost 20 years ago, so I'm sure inflation has raised the price some by not.
