  • Noshin Sarfraz, a distinguished horticulturist and floriculturist, stands at the forefront of botanical excellence. As the President of the Amateur Gardening Club and the leader of the Lahore Gymkhana Gardening Club, she has emerged as a prominent figure in the world of horticulture and gardening. Noshin's passion for plants and gardens goes beyond the surface, delving into the realms of historical significance and gardening concepts, making her the perfect guide for this journey through the floral artistry of Masjid Wazir Khan.
Built in the Mughal era, Masjid Wazir Khan is one of Lahore's most iconic landmarks. Commissioned by Hakim Ilmuddin Ansari, who held the title of Wazir Khan, the mosque was constructed between 1634 and 1641 during the reign of Emperor Shah Jahan. This stunning architectural masterpiece is renowned for its intricate tile work, frescoes, and detailed floral patterns that showcase the rich artistic and floral heritage of the Mughal period.
In this video, Noshin Sarfraz delves into the history and significance of the flowers painted within the mosque. She explains how these floral motifs are not just decorative elements but also carry deep cultural and symbolic meanings. Through her expert lens, she details the types of flowers depicted, their historical context, and the techniques used by the artists of that era.
Noshin Sarfraz's dedication to preserving and promoting the rich heritage of horticulture reflects not only in her research but also in her active involvement in gardening clubs. As a leader in these clubs, she encourages enthusiasts to explore the nuanced connections between history and horticulture, fostering a deeper appreciation for the art and science of cultivating beauty in the natural world.

Well researched and analyzed. Thoroughly enjoyed every word. Learned so much and appreciation for our rich culture and heritage has increased. We must try to revive this lost legacy. This should be included in history books.
Please make more of these informative videos
I learned that madam Noshin Sarfraz reintroduced the tulips in the northern regions.
Her video on Shalimar Gardens was also very engrossing and had a wealth of information. With her expertise she’s transformed the Gardens into a treat to visit and enjoy.

I think those exotic flowers rarely seen were probably planted @ the Mughul Shahlimar Gardens , Lahore 400-500 years ago.
The Royal Horticulturists of the Shalimar Gardens would have been in close cooperation with their counterparts in Royal palaces and Royal Gardens of Iran, Agra, Jaipur, Delhi, Kashmir, Kabul , etc, for exchanges and receipt such exotic plants.

In Iranian miniature art the clouds are painted like this. Chinese also have similar technique.
Every time I visit I am absolutely amazed at the fresco done. Fresco is a very difficult technique. It should have taken them a thousand fresco artists to complete the whole structure , working day and night.

Im sorry but the information about Hakim Ilmuddin Ansari and his initial training isnt correct, though some sources give the fallacious information cited here. Hakim Ilm ud din Al-Ansari trained under his elder relative Hakim Abu Ishaq Al-Ansari , who was a student of Anton the Physick , and who founded the Bazar e Hakeeman. Hakim Abu Ishaq remained a physician in the court of Akbar the Great. And later, Hakim Ilm ud din became part of the court of Jahangir and then Shah Jahan.
Of course, all these flowers like tulips, iris etc were and are found in Kashmir and our Northern areas and Afghanistan and Iran etc . Many of the artists and artisans who worked on the Wazir Khan/Hakim Ilm ud din masjid in fact came from these areas. I hope that we will correct and update our historical information.

Madam ne urdu farsi nahi padhi hogee. Nargis ka kafi zirk hota hai. Miniature painting me Flower Studies kafi milti hien. Jahangir in particular was known to be an avid nature and garden lover and commissioned perfect botanical studies by his court painters. Babur was the first to get extensive persian gardens made from Kabul to Agra. There are detailed descriptions of these gardens and flora in his memoir. I have visited Wazir Khan masjid in Lahore, I agree it is a stunning monument.
