A force of nature. No matter if one or two notes are not perfect - this is what I want to hear and see when it comes to opera. A full-hearted performance with 150 % of dedication to the role and its emotions.
I remember her Butterfly; she recorded an entire recital disk of Puccini arias at her peak that was pure molten gold. Her “Flammen perdonami!” was pure genius!😊
Her voice was still in great shape here. She doesn't capture the little woman in the role here but her vocal technique is totally in control. It's great that you captured this because all of those PBS Live From The Met broadcasts took place well past her prime and are not a good documentation of her talent. Her final performance at the Met in this role was all wobbly vibrato, well-acted but painful to hear.
@sorobji Lombardi:69.Vespri:70,Tosca 79 Gioconda:79 and so forth..Most big Verdi and verismo roles were in the 70s: Ballo:74,Luisa Miller,Otello, Trovatore,etc were all mid 70's.Only Lady Macbeth 81 and Francesca 83 were added in the 80's.This is why she had trouble in the 80's.Perhaps also because of the weight loss However she was the ONLY major singer to rebuild the voice after the wreck and sing Kundry,Marschallin,Klytemnestra,The Medium, etc- all rock solid vocally until '02. A 50yrCareer!
Can Mr. Lou (or anyone else) tell us where this join concert took place and the date? I would place it mid 70's before her weight loss but after she took on roles like Ballo ('74 Turino). If this was a radio broadcast, it should be widely available at least on audio. I collect everything of Scotto and I don't have this remarkable concert and have never seen it listed. Can someone help me out? Finally, mille grazie to Stuart Lou for sharing this treasure!!!!
This was a benefit at the Met. Opera. The microphones were for "broadcast purposes only". If I remember, I think it was in the afternoon. I was too busy with my recording equiptment- waiting to be thrown out at any moment. Fortunately I escaped with gems.
This must be October 1976 at the Met Marathon. I wonder if any other footage of this exists, as there were some other stunning contributions, as well as Amara's and Scotto's.

Nevertheless, I must say that she started what you call the "enemy" territory in the late 60's with Lombardi. Yes she did add Francesca and Lady Macbeth in the 80's BUT almost all the heavy roles were in the 70's. The whole point of your post was that this started in the 80's which is factually incorrect. And Netrebko sings which role this well? NONE!!! I love her, too, but it's 36 years later and something has been irretrievably lost in the art of the lyric theatre.
I agree. Today´s singers lack education, patience and the will to put something dramatic on stage. It seems to me most of them care about their bank accounts more than about performing and doing something artistic with their hearts.
Listen to Ermonela Jaho, I saw her at ROH, then the Met this April, and will be at Munich for round three next April, her Butterfly is as good as any of the legends of yesteryear!

Quite a respectable performance, IMHO. But, her arm movements are a big "tell" about who she is -- an overly dramatic Diva! Her best role was as Mimi in La Boheme. As for the rest, meh! Many years ago she and Pavarotti were both performing in La Gioconda, put on by the San Francisco opera company. (I saw it, albeit in the SRO part of the theater.) The newspapers were full of articles about how she believed she should get top billing; there was quite a battle going on between the two. Oh Renata, get over yourself -- you weren't as wonderful as you imagined you were. Only pretty good.

One would have a hard time finding a performance of this aria that captures so much of the character and beautifully vocalized.
