I love her so much. I like her better than Callas. Not that I don't like Callas. Everyone has a favorite was Scotto. Her acting and range were incredible. No one does Manon Lescaut like her. The death scene. Wow.
I saw Scotto many times during her peak years at the Met. She was often fantastic, occasionally dreadful. But even here, as always, the beauty and artistry are marred by those explosive high fortes that are raw and unsteady.
I have learned a lot about Ms. Scotto from watching videos such as this one here on YT and have mixed feelings. First of all, I think the ugly comments I've read on here are unfair and unwarranted. Scotto she had a beautiful voice and worked hard to learn and perform the great roles. She was undeniably a great international opera star and a prima donna in her own right. Perhaps this 1980 performance is less than perfect, but her pianissimi were ravishing and overall it was a beautiful performance. Scotto may not have had MC's interpretive genius but nobody else did either. Like many opera fans, I was saddened by some of the things she said about MC. However, I think it's time to consign that unfortunate chapter in operatic history into oblivion.
She should have declined this TV appearance. Scotto displays the technique but this performance is a disservice to her career. Knowing when to take your last bow was as important as her first prolonged standing ovation from a grateful and admiring audience.
That's call vibrato and crescendo, and this is how it was written by Puccini. Please, go back to study the basics of Belcanto and possibly English grammar before commenting any further.
Tha performance synthesizes what opera is all about. Passion, beautiful sounds, risks for the sake of expression, gorgeous music and so much emotion.
Wow, what a beautiful rendition of that aria!

Is it due to putting too much pressure onto the vocal cords rather than using a natural flow?
I like the dimuendo.

Maggie Teyte once remarked about a very late performance by Mary Garden: “Mary’s just lecturing now!”

Oh, you can hear much worse today!
One slightly wobbly top note didnt diminish er amazing phrasing, artistry or lovely warm middle voice. One either loved her or not.
@@SilfredoSerrano But you cant hear much better (or even as good as) 😀
@@Yves_Ka Certainly not!
When she was in the 1960s she was nice at the light bel canto operas...but after 1970s and especially 1980s...she sounds like killing a cat!!!!!
Grande Renata vera Del Monaco in gonnella ,bravo il pianista
Such much wobbles in her voice.
