I'm glad you showed the weaker way at the beginning as I had that same problem. I thought I was doing something wrong and just went back to my palomar knots that I know for sure how to tie well.
Neat looking knot. I use a uni knot on the shaft of the hook that has a bent eye so the line pulls straight. Just make five wraps and the line breaks before the knot.
I found it difficult to tie this knot on smaller/shorter hooks. It also uses way more line than the regular snell. I've never had a regular snell unravel on me, so, until it does, I won't worry about it.
That would be tricky if using a flipping hook with a bait keeper .. u can use a regular snell knot between the bait-keeper and the eye.. but snell still increases hookup ratio
Thanks for the reply and for watching... if you have any recommendations or any other knots you would like to see please let us know in the comments section!
Thanks for watching our videos and taking the time to comment . It is much appreciated! Please let us know if you have any knot related questions or what you wish to see more of on our channel! Tight lines
There are some that concern that superglue will react with nylon and make them brittle over time- HOWEVER i feel that if it's for a couple of fishing trips it is good solution... some people use nail varnish
Thanks for the comment ! Glad you liked the video. Do share how you rig it up or let us know what other knots or rig types we should feature on our channel !
Thanks for watching and for your feedback! Winding the line towards the eye of the fishing hook can create a slightly different knot structure. Some anglers prefer this method because they believe it provides better knot strength and security, particularly when using certain types of hooks or fishing techniques. However, the difference in performance between winding towards or away from the eye is generally minimal and subjective, so it ultimately comes down to personal preference I would say ..
I don't use both technique, I use a slight variation of your first one, but tying direction from the shank to the loop. That's way more effective and easiest. I use the same way that higherpurpose does and have never had a snell come apart in 50 years
Thanks as they say there are many ways to a snell :D generally they all are pretty good but it’s just that moment when you really don’t want it to fail with the prized catch on the end of the line . Check out our Snell video which shows the 6 different ways of snell as well .. thanks for watching !!
From my own trials, the improved version you show definitely neater and won’t come undone - but it has so much twist that doesn’t come out that the knot/line breaks at much lower specs - I’ve seen it break just on tensioning the knot……
Thanks for your input, perhaps it depends on how you cinch and the type of line, if you lubricate it well and dont exert too much initial force this has been tested in several methods to be the most reliable. Would you share the line you used ?
@@Fishingknotsfast All brands types of lines and I have done a lot of messing around with my fishing rigs……ocea fc, ygk galis shock leader, Berkley mono etc This type twist I no longer trust I think there is another version……I just use upper hook with a snell and lower hook a uni knot…..
Thanks so much for your comment and for watching our videos !! Yes super glue has been a long time approach to lock the knots but depending on the chemistry of the glue typically Cyanoacrylates they hold but being exothermic reactions it may weaken the line plus making the line less elastic and can break under sudden strain , most deteriorate in saltwater over time .. but if we change rigs often it wouldn’t matter
@Fishingknotsfast And all this time, I thought I had an original idea! 😆 Even though I've been fishing for forty years, I don't research much. Obviously. I use heavy mono leaders with large hooks for flats, and lately, I've ditched the glue for a small, heated screwdriver. I melt the tag to a nice molten ball and press it against the shank. You know how it is. Half the fun of fishing is experimenting. I always make a couple dozen rigs at a time, so it's not too inconvenient.

Although designed around mono the knot which is a very old knot is perfect for FC ..the multiple wraps and structure distribute stress and increase friction really well, resulting in a strong connection! :)
Thanks for the comment and for watching our videos! Yes a lot of cases it would be fine but through tests there are versions of the same knot that are shown to be more resistant to slippage given the circumstances.. tight lines !
The plain old simple wrap snell....Recommended by Chad Ferguson, Wisker Seekers Catfish guide, is just fine and does not fail. Its the least impressive of Snells and easiest to tie.
Is it just me or did anyone else notice he did not pull the first snell tight against the eye like the improved snell? I tie my snells at home and use a pulling pin built into my bench to pull everything tight no matter what hook. I can see where the improved would be a darling to tie on a short treble. I'll stick to the way I know that works for me. Just my 2 cents.
Thank you for your comment and for sharing your technique! You’re right, in the video, we didn't pull the first Snell tight against the eye like the improved Snell. This was intentional to demonstrate the potential pitfalls and common mistakes anglers can make. Even if the first Snell is pulled tight initially, over time, similar failures can occur due to the rough edges of the hook eye, especially under the stress of fighting a large fish. Our goal with this video was to illustrate these potential issues and to show why the improved Snell knot can be more reliable in the long run. It's great to hear that you have a method that works well for you, and using a pulling pin sounds like a very effective technique! Thanks again for your input and for watching our video.
I tied several different knots on 18lb fluorocarbon and tested them for strength. Your knot is the strongest, approximately 80% strength. How to explain this?
Thanks for sharing and for watching our videos .. what knots are you comparing specifically? There are a number of variables that impacts knot strength
@@Fishingknotsfast First of all, I was interested in comparing your knot with the traditional snell knot. It gave 60% strength. I also used uni knot snell and easy snell for comparison. The result was even worse.

That’s a good point indeed . Even though super glue or adhesives have been shown to reduce slippage in knots there are a few concerns . Such as long term chemical impact to the line polymers, glue that hardens stiff promotes cracking and nicks line … but ideally just test it and don’t reuse the rig too much is my advise … and most importantly don’t glue your fingers together !
Thank you for your comment. Even though snell was develop for spade end hooks that are eyeless. These was popular in the olden days where many hooks does not have eyes or hole in it that you can pass a line through. These hooks mostly popular with flies for fly fishing . Most of today's hooks have eyes on them. However the snell is still very effective for such hooks and might be the only hooks you have in your tackle box. and if you have circle hooks and octopus hooks the snell is Perfect. Snell allows for better Hook Sets when used on an Octopus hook , circle hook as it turns into the lip of the fish . Without a big knot above the eye it prevents the rig from catching debris or weeds along the bottom of the water. However when fishing toothy fishes you need to be careful and perhaps use this 'INSURANCE' Knot for safety: th-cam.com/video/suwRsxB1G0E/w-d-xo.html
It’s been my experience to NOT snell straight eye hooks UNLESS you snell it without running it through the eye. FWIW, My hookup ratio went way up when I started using the palomer and Uni knot with the straight eyes.
Thank you for your feedback and for sharing your experience,I do agree with you but there are also variables to line type , quality , diameter and so on hence the second method does reduces the risks significantly especially for beginners starting out .. losing a fish is really not a great feeling :) thanks again for watching !!
You are right in some cases yes... like the snells, certain knots involve deliberate crossings or twists, but these are carefully designed to distribute the load evenly and maintain strength.
Good knot. But if you just wouldve pulled on the main line one more time and actually sintched the knot to the eye on the first one it wouldn't have come undone. You made it so it was easy to come undone.
Thanks for your feedback , the way it was tied is often done by beginners but side by side comparison the second method does reduce the risk significantly, through usage , slippage can happen by the nature of the line and wraps.

Flip the hook and tighten eye down to the hook. Same steps as the video.

Try a teenie drop of superglue on the tag of a traditional snell. It dries in seconds and works great on heavy mono.

Do you still have the same hook then? Never had a snag or break off?

At last someone showing a knot I have been using for, what? 50 years? Yes, the very first snell knot I learnt...

I have to agree.. flip the hook around and all good.
You are correct. If right handed keep hook in left hand wrap downward reel fast then threw loop.
Makes so much sense !!!!!!!
