    Great comprehensive video! I like that you included your mistakes. Unless you find someone that does only doors, and only one type, there are always “adjustments.” We accommodate the job, not vice versa. I have a much better idea of what I might encounter doing my door. Thanks!

    The only thing I'd (try to) do differently (because I'm not the best at and too impatient for) is to use a router/trim router and jig on the casing to receive the hinges rather than chisel them out . A little bit fiddly to make sure they line up perfectly with the door hinge side . But I'd rather mess around with that than do all that chiseling . Plus you've got a perfectly flat place to set the hinges in . I'm not suggesting my way us better ! Just me . Thanks for this !

    • @FamilyFriendlyDIY
      @FamilyFriendlyDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd like to try that out myself. Someone gave me a used Ryobi hinge jig a few months ago, but I don't have a router bit to go with it yet. Thanks for your comments, Lisa.

    You need 3.5" screws in the deadbolt plate that'll go through the door frame and into the 2x4 studs in the rough opening. That'll GREATLY reduce the risk of someone kicking your door open. Do the same thing with screws in your door hinges also.

      I mean its a glass door.
      If they want to get in, they're just going to break the glass.

    • @kee_b
      @kee_b 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Fenix-Vale It's not about the glass, it's about taking steps to make it harder for a thief to break into your house. And my advise is for ALL exterior doors - steel, wood, and fiberglass, with and without glass inserts.

    AvE absolutely crucified that Ridgid palm impact driver over the ergonomics. Other than the torque limitations it seems like it’s working pretty well for you 👍

    • @FamilyFriendlyDIY
      @FamilyFriendlyDIY  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I love it for doing electrical work or anything you don't want to over-torque, like screws on receptacles and breakers, or sheet-metal screws, etc., but it won't put a deck screw in for anything. Now that I got the Makita, it's either going in my electrical bag, or the kitchen drawer---my wife loves to use it. Thanks as always for the comment FBN!

    If you arent gonna remove the door to paint it then at least take the extra 5 mins to tape off the hinges strike plates and latches. Nothing cheapens the look of doors and cabinets more than having all the hardware caked with layers of paint. I know that probably wasnt you but that was the first thing i saw and its what i am in the process of replacing in my house.

  • @lisacolbert5987

    I've got to get one of those palm drivers ! Have you ever used those bits that have a spring-loaded sleeve that perfectly centers the holes to attach the hinges ? Inexpensive , accurate and a big timesaver . But unless one works alone 100% of the time , they tend to walk away on job sites ! M

      Thanks for the comment, Galin. It just so happens that I have recently done another door using the same jamb kit. I think I actually give instructions in this one. I haven’t been able to edit it yet but I will keep your comment in mind as I put the video together.

      Thanks James, and ... hmmm. I don't remember what I did on that one. However, I just did another jamb a couple of weeks ago (video coming soon) and I used a handsaw to cut the shoulder of the rabbet, then chiseled the waste with a 3/4" bench chisel. Hope this helps.

    How did you measure where to cut the bottom of the jamb to fit your door and threshold

    • @FamilyFriendlyDIY
      @FamilyFriendlyDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be honest, Ryan, I didn't. I knew I was going to layer another threshold on top, and it would be a tight fit ... it actually ended up being too tight so that it has quickly worn the sweeps off the bottom of the door seal. When it's time for a new sweep, I'll probably go back and shave the threshold down a little. If I hadn't been adding a threshold, I would have measured the thickness of the original threshold plus the thickness of the sweeps, and subtracted about 3/16 of an inch to be sure the sweeps had a good seal but wouldn't get destroyed. I hope this helps. Thanks for the comment!

    I'm totally unfamiliar with this process. That's why I watched the video.
    -this was about demonstrating how to install a new exterior door jamb for a recycled door. Appreciate you admitting an error. Some wouldn't. But, I'm not familiar with the term"proud" in this context.
    'needed to be "proud" of jamb just a little bit?' What does "proud" mean installing door hinges? You cut little pieces of jamb wood & glued them in the screw holes to redrill holes & move the hinge in or out? (you did not show what you did - speeded up the process as though it was saving us time with a redundancy? If you moved the hinge out from the cut-out for the hinge- wouldn't that heave a gap that should be filled? If you moved the hinge further in, wouldn't you need to remove more wood from the door's hinge footprint?). Thanks.
