THE REVIEW
I watch each episode with my own commentary, often pausing the scenes to get my words out without having to talk over the episode, and also to point out and analyze the show's art and animation. I have seen each episode already growing up, so these reviews are to compare and contrast the five categories listed below.
PLOT (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
The foundation of the episode. Uniqueness and overused tropes are taken into account, but it is also judged on how well it tells the story of the episode. An episode can score a 5 even with a basic/ cliche plotline as long as it has good pacing, worthy use of its tropes, and feels well-polished. An episode can lose points due to plotholes, uneven storytelling, and relying too heavily on cliches to do the work for it.
CHARACTERIZATION (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
How well the characters are written. Do they feel like themselves compared to the grand narrative of the franchise? Are the supporting or one-off characters interesting, or pure plot devices? Did the humor land? Did the actions and character motivations make sense?
VISUALS (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
Basically, everything that happens on-screen. Character Design. Animation. Backgrounds. Creative mechanics and solutions. If there is CGI or digital effects added, how well do they blend into the show, and were they used as an enhancement, or a crutch?
IMPORTANCE (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
This includes, but is not strictly based on, how important the episodes are to the current story arc (if there is one) or the general narrative of the Ben 10 Franchise. Points can also be awarded for how impactful the episode was, or how favored/ important it is to the general Ben 10 fanbase. I ask myself, "If I skipped this, would I be missing out on the 'Ben 10 Experience?' "
ENTERTAINMENT (Scaled from 1 to 5)
Pretty much the most important part of developing a tv show. You can be perfect in all four of the previous categories, but the episode can still be boring. On the flip side, the episode can be absolute garbage, but still an enjoyable watch. How likely would you be to put this episode on if you were in the mood to watch Ben 10?
The reason Gwen doesn't hesitate to jump into battle is that she figured out she has plot armor
Considering how future Ben 10s show time travel as usually having a very set conclusion with the same events playing out over and over in a time loop, yeah she definitely wasn't going to die anytime soon.

She only brought younger be and gwen to give her present a long life lesson what he lost, he forgot and lost who he was as humanity and his own kind, and kept on being the other aliens.

I imagine the line "They aren't pets, I don't name them" was meant to try and portray him as being more joyless, but I always interrupted it as him having grown more respect for the transformations, and understanding that the dna came from a previously sentient being.

@@CrustyFox87 not to mention when you account for some of the future episodes with things like big chill having babies, alien x's split personalities, the ultimate aliens, the who chromastone sugilite fiasco. It seems like he's come to realize and accept that perhaps the aliens are alive in more ways than one. Even if you say the exclude most of the later stuff in the series, he still had ghostfreak as an example that maybe he should treat the aliens as there own beings.
This and he has like, a million of them, of course he's not gonna remember all of their names
But him naming them is PART of the respect that Ben has for his Aliens. It's not totally consistent but Ben will commonly call his transformations by name and sometimes refers to them as though they were entities separate from themselves. Naming these transformations isn't somehow disrespectful, it's part of Ben identifying with his alien forms and actually achieving the goal of the omnitrix.
Well, I suppose that that is the case, but also with what kuro said, that after a few hundred aliens you end up getting tired of naming them.
To me, Ben 10K's problem isn't that he's a jerk, it's that he refuses to take time for himself. Being a hero 24/7 is impossible for anyone to keep up for more than a couple years.
Yeah definitely, the problem that future gwen is trying to address is saving ben from himself. The problem is ultimately he tries to take on all the universes problems by himself when he doesn't need to. He has help and he needs help seeing that.

Well, I mean his reactions are the jerk part, though his reasons are sound. He's probably so cold because he never gets enough sleep and god only knows when he gets in time to eat or shower. He literally said he travels the world to keep everyone safe, even as XLR8 getting from point A to point B on opposite sides of the planet can take a bit (which would probably be easier if her asked Gwen and Grandpa to help since Gwen can likely open portals to different places). Just as well, I wonder if Grandpa's new arm is a reason for his cold response to everything, including Young Ben?
He distances himself from Gwen and Grandpa and gives his past self the most flak for just being there. Could be reading into something that's not there, but it would make sense. (I don't think they elaborated on what caused Grandpa's injury that resulted in a new arm or if it was just a choice Grandpa made, did they?)

I would argue that you missed something about Ben 10,000's characterization: He seems to hate his past self. He's more dismissive to ben than to his own family and snaps at him whenever he acts childish
That's quite true actually. Heck even in Ultimate Alien, where 10yr Ben meets his teenage self, that future is annoyed as well. I think Ben is just ashamed of how he used to act

I haven't watched Ben10 in ages so I don't remember a lot, but I do know that I always thought that Gwen was always a bit of a bitch, so her calling him a jerk for just not acting nice 24/7 is pretty much well within her character.

I mean everybody knows the later you go into the Ben 10 universe, the more jerky our universe Ben gets. Yet he learns to humble himself and then becomes more of a jerk
There's something else that I noticed for how Ben 10k is treated like he's wrong when he's not. Gwendolyn says he sleeps in his HQ because he doesn't have time for them anymore, but honestly, aren't both of them like 30+ now? I get the point she's trying to convey, but isn't it normal that he'd have his own place by this point, even if he wasn't the most famous superhero in the world, probably across multiple galaxies if it's anything like the other timelines? Does she not have her own place? Also, where are their parents in all this? Staying with Max in the Rustbucket was only the arrangement for that one summer.

I love how Ben 10.000's aliens actually look physically different from young Ben's (like Stinkfly, Wildmutt and Heatblast) since they are essentially grown-up versions of the aliens
I don't think the Future Bens needs gimmicks like using powers in human form, or fusion aliens. Just seeing the current aliens future-ified and a few new ones that we've yet to see is great on its own

it's funny that we're told Ben is a jerk but in reality he's just... an adult. like, most older men in my experience are always just drowning in their work, sacrificing their normal life because they NEED to do that job. To keep their family safe; physically or financially. and you end up loosing those intimate family moments.
Ultimately? I think this is truly the sad reality of well....growing up? and becoming your own person

I'd always imagined Ben's fooling around while dealing with a villain was what led to Max losing his arm, and to make sure he doesn't repeat the same mistake, he finally starts taking his job seriously. Max has gotten older and the threats are much stronger, so for his own safety, Ben probably wants to keep him away from all the fighting.
That makes a lot of sense
I’d like to add we meet Ken, but we never meet his mother. She might’ve died in that fight, which would further Ben into taking everything seriously.

Truck-Kun, I found the whole Gwen being an Andoite thing pretty stupid in Alien Force onwards, and I liked her having magic powers instead because it focused on showing that she didn’t need alien powers to be on equal footing with Ben with his omnitrex.

The most heartbreaking part of this episode in retrospect is that Ben 10,000 implies that he never got Max that cake when he was younger.

I think that was the beginning of the rift, both of them were pretty immature and since Ben couldn't get the cake maybe she made it a big deal, and couldn't stop bringing it up until Ben stopped caring.

Well, universes are infinite every time the heroes made a choice a new timeline was created, hell, in 50% of all timelines, ben would be female, as their were 2 outcomes for his birth.

@@slevinchannel7589 he did unlock all the alien on that watch though. It was never switched out or rebooted like in the main timeline, so he only has what the og prototype did.
@@GreaterGrievobeast55 Don't think Ben 10,000's Omnitrix has ever been explained so if I had to guess that the original intention was to have the Omnitrix grow as Ben does. But since as of Omniverse this it still Ben's canonical future, or at least the most probable, we can assume that Ben 10,000's Omnitrix is just a future version of The Omnitrix(OV) that has been upgraded/recalibrated at some point.
I think as kids we all thought he was a jerk but as we grew older we came to this new understanding that he really wasn’t, he was just an adult with major responsibilities he shouldered on his own.
I never felt he was a jerk, I just felt he matured and took his role as earth's protector seriously, like a workaholic dad. This seems like the best natural progression for Ben, him growing up with Omnitrix learning it and the reality of being a superhero. Future Gwen brought him, to actually loosen up a bit and realize that he can rely on others

I think the reason Future Gwen's portal appeared just before the Rock Paper Scissors match was decided is cause in her timeline she lost the match and had to get the cake but could not get one.

Gwen quite literally changed her own future. Grandpa’s birthday was the start of “jerk” Ben ignoring his family. When Ben10k gives present Ben the cake, he doesn’t become a “jerk”. I think Ken 10’s timeline was birthed through this action, essentially making Gwen the reason Ken exists.
Ken 10's timeline is this same timeline, both of the OS B10K are the same

There's nothing wrong with being a serious hero and growing up is a part of life,but it's what I like with Spidey,he may be grown up but Peter still has his joking nature and acts like a teenager.
With Ben 10K he needed to remember who he was.

Ben 10k is the most powerful person in the world and he’s well aware of that fact. Any time someone is in danger and he doesn’t save them he’s making a deliberate choice to do so. Having the weight of that kind of responsibility would harden anyone.

To this day the Ben 10,000 we see in this episode is by far my favorite especially his design. I always liked that his shirt’s colors became inverted. Ntm the amazing omnitrix that basically became a gauntlet

Just imagine what kinda stuff he's been through in these 20 years, I would be pretty cynical too if I saw the worst of what the universe can offer on a daily as he does. The most horrific and disturbing things that I can imagine are probably not even Tuesdays to him at this point

Tbf ben 10k is like I'd imagine older spiderman would be, man gone through some tough shit and had a lot happen to him (sorta like spider-verse) and tbf? This ben 10k really did seem like what ben would ultimately become being the wielder of the most powerful weapon in the universe as said by him.

Future Gwen (both her Ben 10,000 and Ken 10 designs) are my favorite designs for her with her first Omniverse design coming in second. She looks VERY attractive in those episodes. ❤❤❤
In the episode where 16 year old and 11 year old swap bodies, the 11 year old said "I finally got an alien I know how to use" when he gets arcticguana even though he never actually used him

I always loved how you didn't see Ben 10K's human form until the end of the episode. That's just so cool to me, it gets to the point of knowing Ben 10K more as his Kinneceleran form than his human form. Also, I never saw Ben 10K as a jerk. I completely understood why he was how he was and his mentality that his duty to save the world was more important than any thing else. Plus this has always been my favourite version of Ben 10K. He's just so cool, and they use him to introduce two new aliens! Plus his alien designs were the best and this version actually seemed to have master control unlike Ultimate Ben who kinda just used quick swap (but by hitting the omnitrix) and Ben 10K (OV) who didn't show any signs of having master control other than not getting the right alien and not timing out, which is much more boring than the quick transformations we get with this version
I agree that future Ben isn’t the jerk the episode seems to try and code him to be, just incredibly serious and work driven, which has degraded his relationships along the way. It’s defiantly an issue, especially taken to its ultimate conclusion (I’ll get to that in a second), but it certainly could’ve been framed better.
I think the real thing Gwen was trying to change wasn’t Ben’s attitude, it was his work-o-holic tendencies. You made good points in that Ben 10k has likely realised exactly how crucial the Omnitrix and by extension, himself, is to the survival of his planet. There are many issues that would require someone with his level of power, and with so many aliens and enemies around now, he feels he needs to be constantly vigilant for any and all crisis. The key word here is “he”, Ben and only Ben should have to take on these life-threatening tasks for the sake of protecting others, his family especially, to the point where he feels like no one can come close to his skill and is therefore at risk of being seriously hurt or killed (maybe he blames himself for Max’s arm needing to be replaced?). So he pushes everyone away and is constantly on patrol for danger... which cannot be good for his psyche at all. No one, even with the Omnitrix, could ever handle that kind of stress 24/7, Ben would eventually break either mentally or physically under that kind of pressure. Not to mention it destroys his social circle and cuts him off from any of those that could help him.
That’s probably why future Gwen brought their younger selves to the future, to remind Ben 10k that he’s only human, despite whatever he looks like on the outside. Being human has its limitations that can only be mended with help from others, you can’t have the world sitting on you!re shoulders without support, it will crush you eventually. Future Gwen would never want to see that happen to Ben 10k, and clearly all previous attempts to help have likely failed gaging by her attitude. And she likely wouldn’t want to tell either of their younger selves this, as it might effect how Young Ben develops in the future, so better to just simplify it down to “yeah, Ben 10k is being an antisocial jerk, remind him that he can still have fun.”
But that’s just my two cents. Certainly paints this concept in a darker light than before.

@@swslwatts Except batman isn't always on the mission. Bruce Wayne isn't some mysterious shut-in that the city never sees. (Editing here preemptively): The point being, Bruce still goes out, attends business meetings, has a personal life outside of being batman, AND while being batman (justice league, robin, batgirl, catwoman). Ben meanwhile keeps everyone else OUT of the hero business by choice. He chooses not to rely on anyone and becomes a recluse with no sense of humor or joy. So yeah, he's an uptight jerk.

@@swslwatts except he doesnt. It would be easy to install figureheads at the company and be known as yet another rich recluse. Not to mention, tim, dick, barbara, hell he has a kid with talia and that sure has nothing to do with keeping his identity secret cause she knew he's batman.
Of all the Ben 10,000 futures, this is my favorite. The city looks cool, Ben doesn't have any annoying gimmicks like ultimate Ben or fusions, and Gwen is still using pure magic. I'm not a fan of the annodite magic, Gwen's powers were largely simplified down to purple/pink beams and barriers, it's a lot less interesting.

Man this breakdown just makes me want a future Ben 10 even more, like a series in which we follow Ben 10,000, Gwendolyn and Kevin 11,000 like how awesome does that sound, and even if they wanted a "Hero's Beginning" type show they can just shift the focus from Ben to his son Ken, as he struggles to live up to his father's reputation of being the "Hero of Heros" , God damn it Man of Action
It will be so awesome, especially if future ben is a mix of this one and ben how we left at the end of omniverse. I would also like to see ken beeing stuck with 10 "lame" aliens like it was meant to be in ken10 episode. An omnitrix mixing some underrated aliens, with alien species we saw in the show and some new guys would be cool.

I always liked ben 10,000. The concept of characters meeting there future versions was always fascinating to me. This ben just seemed older and I like how he changed so much in the years and his personality while also having the same like spirit as 10 year old ben.
Honestly, I think during that one Arc in Omniverse where Paradox gathers all of the Bens, it would've been cool if he also gathered this Ben 10000, as well as the one from UA, in addition to Ben 10K. Essentially have all three future Ben's that present Ben has met.
Man, that really would've been cool as hell, especially since it's canon that the multiverse exists and that Ben visiting his future self is what changes his future, so it would make perfect sense that those futures would branch into their own parallel universe after Ben interacts with them and "loses sync" with said future. Maybe someday we'll get a Ben 10,000 show on Adult Swim or something. I really hope we do, or at the very least get some kind of continuation of the OG continuity at some point, cuz there's still soo many cool stories that could be told in the world of Ben 10, it'd be such a waste if they just let the franchise stay stagnant until it's eventually forgotten 😢
Also, adult Ben gave me a lot of Batman vibes. Like, the obsession and paranoia and loner attitude, but with the responsibility of someone like Superman.

One thing that's worth noting is that Gwen is still using magic and it still has natural elemental appearances instead of becoming pink energy goop that it turns into in Alien Force when they redefine her powers as alien energy and not magic. Even having the magic gems on her arm was a fantastic design choice and leads into that same sense that she really is using magic and not just some alien energy manipulation power
Which really shows how bad of a retcon what happens later is.

I ended up falling off the show around the Alien Force Vilgax fight cause I just lost interest, but this retrospective has made me really nostalgic for it, and my friend had been referencing the show recently, so I was getting curious. Now I remember why I used to love it so much but also why I fell off

This episode gave me so much hope for Bens future. When I saw it, I thought. Dude, Ben could grow up to be a badass, a bit too edgy, but a badass. Granted, in the subsequent behind-the-scenes material and fan-theory craftings. I came to realize, that version of Ben likely hung out with his family a lot. Probably goofed off a lot. Then Grandpa Max lost an arm, I believe to Vilgax. And Ben blamed himself. I'd wager after that, he struggled night and day to figure out the secrets of the omnitrix and how to get master-control back. Once he figured that out, he grew out of using his human form. Instead, choosing to be XLR8 most of the time because it was one of his fastest Aliens and could get him to the scene of the problem fast.
Ben 10k wasn't a jerk. He had a hard life up till then, and grew to think that he had to do it all. To be that workaholic superhero. Young Bens presence was meant to help him loosen up. I agree, they kinda sent the wrong message.

This episode is my favorite, for several reasons, but particularly the message that leaves, for me, which is never to leave your inner child, if we look closely, the Ben 10K that they present to us, at the beginning, looks totally different from our Ben , and precisely, that child's attitude is something that always represents Ben, and for me, in addition to not leaving his humanity, the lesson he gives himself, is to never leave that inner childhood, which was one of the things that pushed him to use the watch heroically.
It has probably the best time travel theme in any show to show your future and it's not bleak or bad or "we need to fix-fix it". It was so good.

I saw Ben 10K as a jerk as a kid, but as an adult who has responsibility I see now that he isn’t and I think that should show that the writers for this episode are FANTASTIC! Because they made a character who depending on what age you watch this episode is completely different. As a kid you side with Ben 10 as an adult you see what Ben 10K’s responsibilities are and you relate in some small way to him needing to be a responsible *Hero of Heroes*

I just realised, what if the omnitrix colour when alien isn't about the status or protection of the omnitrix, its about the clothing, since the original aliens wore clothing or armour based on the omnitrix and Ben 10,000 wore black and white so the colour would be white too, and when he wears green mainly in ultimate alien force and omniverse makes it green. Clothing dictates how some alien looks such as a tetraman, a vulpimancers armour and diamond heads species. To me just make sense, also the galvanic mechamorph is different too, don't see others have a white chest it's usually the same colour as the techno textures on the rest of them.

He didn't have a giant canon arm, but his arm was a little more different than in the classic Ben 10 series in the game. It wasn't a canon arm at all, but if you're saying it's a bit bigger and buffed up than his other arm as this Ben 10,000's Vilgax than I hear you loud and clear. Doctor Animo does have a mechanical gorilla body in the game, I'm assuming I don't think it's from a real gorilla hopefully not. The thing is in the future, Dr.Animo only has his head somehow and a containment tube for his head attached to the body.
These breakdowns have reignited my love for this show. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed it as a kid. It's great to see it again as an adult and see that the show still really holds up

I didn't have strong memories of how I felt about Ben 10,000 as a character, but after watching this and hearing your views, honestly, I relate to the guy. Not to toot my own horn, but sometimes I kinda feel like how he is. Always trying to do what you feel needs to be done, feeling like larger responsibilities are on your shoulders, in an odd way I get it. I feel like if I had the Omnitrix I'd be the same way.
The best part about the design of Ben 10,000's Wildmutt is that that is how the adults of the species look and since it's Ben's adult self, his alien forms are in their adult versions as well. Makes me wonder if his alien forms were in their own awkward teenage phases when he used them when he was going through his awkward years lol

Professor Paradox wasn't created at the time of the original series. He was made in Alien Force. If I think of an in-universe explanation it could be that maybe Gwen consulted Paradox before traveling back in time.

To be honest, I never saw Ben 10,000 as a jerk. He decided to be a hero full time and in doing so abandoned what made him....well.... Him. It was a great way to show that even though great power comes with great responsibility, never forget who you are and why you became a hero.
He's not a jerk, he's a workaholic. Like Ultimos said, it's a big world with other heroes but he still feels the need to do everything himself and never takes a break since he's unlocked the omnitrix's master control.
People seeing Ben 10 000 as a jerk reminds me of people thinking alien force ben was too mature, like maybe for a 15 year old sure but from the way gwen and him are around one another during early episodes and how willing he was to have kevin join makes me think ben could always grow up too fast, being responcible for others lives could do that to you just like forge of creation showed when kid ben brought it up only for gwen to ask 16 year old ben in ultimate alien if thats why he'll flip between serious and jokey only for him to go "no sometimes im just oblivious" probably to stop her from figuring him out but it makes sense
Looking back at all the shows (excluding reboot) the proper progression of Ben's emotional state should have been omniverse, UA, AF. With season 3's emotion maturity just being jettisoned into the null void.

But I'll always love early Alien Force for how competent it made him, he's past all the cockiness but still humble and willing to make jokes, but like the Cash and JT episode showed there are times when he wants to lash out and be a teenager but he has to be better kinda like Spiderman holding back from getting at his bullies just because he has powers now but Kevin sticking up for Ben was always nice to show how he's still not Upstanding but not a sociopath like he used to be,
Season 3 Alien Force some people say is a bad taste because Seasons 1 and 2 made ben so mature but I'd argue if my intro to teen ben was Season 3 I'd wonder why he never grew out of his Kid persona after having Max and Gwen help him all the time, Kids get away with being annoying because they are kids but when a teen or early adult acts immature it makes you not want to be around them like that's so lame, Ben 10,000 may have been a deby downer but he wasn't out right insensitive just laughs were gone

Honestly, i remembered 10'000 as more of a battle-hardened veteran. he didn't seem like a jerk to me, his time is valuable. He can't afford to waste time hanging out with his younger self, because that time could be used saving lives.
Even as a kid, I always thought there was something off about antagonizing Ben 10K in this episode.
Like, as a kid it made me think that growing up and taking responsibilities was a bad thing.
I think this episode was more about how overworking yourself to an unhealthy degree is bad and how spending a little time alone or with family is good. Generally don't try to solve all the world's problems but solve as many as you can while taking care of yourself.
Greg Weisman is such a cool writer. This story explores big multiverse type plots but with a lot of character.

As a kid, I did think adult Ben was a jerk but being an adult myself now...... no. Adult Ben is responsible and a good hero. Not perfect of course but a jerk he is not.
So yeah the first iteration of Ben10k's "issue" is not necessarily a jerk, it's that he tries to do so much without asking for help and was losing himself in his work.
And future Gwen took "Inner Child Work" to a literall extreme.
I came with up with this headcannon that Ben 10Ks wife and kid were killed by Vilgax. Hence why Ben mercilessly ripped Vilgax apart and has been this hardened lone wolf since. The Ken 10 episodes is a result of that not happening due to young Ben first meeting Ben 10K and they both inspire each other.
Ben wasn't married around this time plus in the pop up he was 20 when he mutilated Vilgax.

Grandpa Max seems very sad when he said Ben hasn’t needed his help in a long time but honestly in the future shows he almost never gets help from Grandpa Max and Max seems totally fine with that so it’s just kinda weird to me
It's more about Ben's attitude than about him really needing help. Here Max was surely hurt because after all these years kindly helping out his grandson, he doesn't pay him attention at all
I think he was sad more so because Ben doesn’t spend time at all with him, help or not.
