I always thought animation would be the best medium for adapting The Wheel of Time as close to the books as possible in tone and content. These shorts confirm that for me.
I think it would have been better to go animated for the show. I’m still going to watch the show because, well big fan of WoT books, but I really do believe they missed an opportunity by not animating it.

Considering that only two years pass for all of the books, it's really impossible to make a faithful adaptation without all of the characters aging way out past their canonical timeline. I agree, animated is the only way to go, even if a really good adaptation would probably take a few hundred hours to watch.

Since I couldn't find them, I've been thinking that perhaps it was something that I had to pay extra for and so it wasn't included in my content. I wanted to watch them after Daniel streamed watching the trailer for them, because the trailer looked so good, I was super hyped for it! ....but then, the animated shorts literally do not appear in the bonus content menu after utilizing the X-Ray feature while watching the WoT episodes on the TV via the Prime Video app with a PS4; so, I literally couldn't watch them.😿 They should make the content accessible on ALL devices-and maybe have a brief bit at the beginning of every episode or something that gently suggests how people should try the X-Ray feature for bonus animated WoT shorts. Unless it's intentionally meant to be an Easter Egg only for the lucky few using the correct device &/or happening to surprise stumble across them by accident when they X-Ray or whatever.
Watching these I actually thought it would be AMAZING to have the Stormlight Archive TV series told with this art style. I think that series would be way too expensive (and maybe too corny?) to do in live action, but with this type of animation it would be great.

These shorts are so gorgeous and yeah, they may just be the greatest content we've gotten yet for sure. I looove the breaking and the fall of manatheran the most. Manathetan is my personal favorite.
2 things for these shorts - drop them on all the official social media around the time the relevant epsiode becomes available. Second, they should also be part of the official after show. While I'm sure the at minimum a sigificant minority of the audience for that are already book readers, it still gives the shorts extra reach.
I have to say this, I want future fantasy adaptations to be animated, I like animation more and after watching arcane I am sure that it can work. Not hating on live action, I am loving the wheel of time especially these last two episodes.
@@aaronclemons2287 I've had Lassic, and it isn't so much pain, as much as the feeling of abrasion.. only on your eyes. The itch and irrititation are terrible. And I couldn't get out of a completly darkened room for 2 days. So it's still quite a feat that he is up and making videos!
It’d be really cool if the show got a shade darker aesthetically with each new season. Sorta like how the Harry Potter movies did. I just really love the darker tone of the animated shorts
I would really like if they had one for each episode that like, told a lil history relevent to the episode. LIke how men used to channel or the battle for this city they just visted or that city someone just mentioned it. like...there is SOOOO much history...I think they should try to pump as much out as possible...in every way they can, if/since they can't fit everything in the show. So, i love the idea of an animated companion piece. maybe even start including like, directors/actors etc talking about the episode after the credits like they did with GOT on HBO. i get why don't do that first season but, yeah i do think they should implement that. And in that section, could say...hey 'clicck here to watch this quick animated bonus history short about xxxx"

I watched the "Army of about 20 people riding into the ally the said was the main road" how in the heck are they going to do the large scale.conflicts that are hundreds of thousands? I think animation is a better media for this. Maybe they used most if the budget on the trollocs...
I feel the same way, its so good! After experiencing this and Arcane, the future for animation looks really bright. Like you said, I would watch a full series in this style. Beautiful and the tone is perfect.
I'm not going to lie. I do like the show, but seeing content animated in this style really does make me want an animated version of the wheel of time. Maybe one day we could get it.
What I thought was neat about the shorts was - despite how awesome and true to the books it looked they actually used all the concepts from the show in terms of backgrounds, clothing, even the weaving special effects. Thought that was some cool synergy. The show could somehow look that good - it has the potential.

I remember when the GoT Blu-ray’s would have bonus content where the characters would narrate stories and history from the books, and it did SO MUCH to really flesh out the world beyond the show. You’d get a telling of the Field of Fire from Robb’s POV and then from Viserys’s POV and both would tell slightly different and biased versions of the story, it was great
The shorts are set in a way, that I wish the main show were set. There is heaps of depth in the shorts, and the soundtracks used are totally on point. Amazon totally need to show these off, even as intro's before the main show.
Or you know, they could have just made each episode ten minutes longer and actually told their story in one place instead of hiding all the lore critical parts like they're trying their damndest to hide who the Dragon is.

I would have loved to see the entire content told this way. I love the live action. But it’s so much easier for adaptations to use animation to tell an epic tale such as this, especially with today’s technology. With no need to pay extras, we would be able to see the epic battles of the Wheel of Time.
So much more content on x-ray other than just the animated shorts...lots of background for each character as well. Love the artwork as well for the scene design
What I got from this- Amazon prime needs to up their game when it comes to marketing. The WoT series is very immersive. Which immediately catches my attention as a history dork.
I have not read wheel of times books but I am liking show because it gives similar vibes to lotr even though it is completely different. Daniel is doing great job for new fans.

Like you, it took me forever to open these shorts. BUT. they are terrific I've watched each at least 10 times. The story of Manethern is heartbreaking and yet so lovely. Making these videos is a brilliant idea and only enhances the overall series. Hope Amazon continues this practice.
nope. The style is fine for very short segments (less than 5 minutes), but any longer than that, and this would have me rip out my own hair in frustration at the glacial pace
I was about to make the same point....but I've just found them. If you click on the "X-ray" link on the upper, left-hand corner of any of the episodes, you'll see the bonus content (videos and photos) there.
I'm watching it on a TV with Roku. I can hit pause and select x-ray, but the next screen only has: Scenes- In Scene- Bonus Content- Cast- Characters- Trivia. Scenes clearly allows you to jump to a spot in the episode. In scene is again obvious. Bonus Content takes you to maps, concept art, behind the scenes, and episode stills. Cast is the actors bios. Characters is the show's bios. Trivia is book info on things happening in that episode. WHERE IS THE SHORTS?!

@@krtimp Yeah, I really disliked most of the changes, most of them were completely unecessary and a wast of time. I'm completely ok with changes that are necessary to adapt the books to the TV format, but I don't like they coming up with a bunch of crap that takes away time that could be use to actually adapt the book. But most directors have such inflated ego that they need to change stuff to satisfy it, because they think the book is not good enough and they can do better.
There are so many ways your COULD use these shorts: - present each short after each episode like GoT did with the behind the scenes or at the beginning like in Pixar movies -incorporate moments into the show (eg a few frames into the manetheren speech) with a title card after each episode saying where to watch them - release them on TH-cam as a free series to build hype
Dude, I want Amazon to do this art style as a visual companion to Rosamund reading the books. It would make specific chapters that dragged come to life that little bit more.
As a military history nerd I wish the Live Action matched the weapons and armour used in the animations. Those were very well done compared to what we see live. It's a small quibble but seeing double headed axes always makes me shake my head...

Those hardly functional pieces of crap just scream LARPER. Thin and broad or short and thick is just about all the axes should ever be. Especially since Rand's sword and Lan's are very reasonable looking.
@@justiny5385 agreed. I sort of wish the swords were not so obviously katanas, but they are nice examples of them. I always imagined the Swords as katana blades with western hilts, or even a Swiss Sabre style sword.
All Warders used swords in books, I don't like the idea of changing this in the series - it doesn't bring any value to the show and it detracts from the books. Warders were trained to become blade masters, not jacks of all trades. Giving and axe to a Warder is like giving a sword to an Aiel. Honestly that's my biggest criticism to the show so far
These animations are so gorgeous! When I searched "Wheel of Time" on my fire stick, all of the bonus content came up, listed as season one, episode zero. They were much easier to hear on the tv.
These are so good and getting no play. They should be placed before the show as a sort of prologue to the episode. I feel like this would really heighten the overall experience (especially for non-readers). Plus, they're just a great mood setter in general. There's so much potential to develop these into something incredible in the long-term too. These prologue/companions pieces could be tailored to each episode and provide us with so much more information than could possibly be translated into the episodes directly. This is huge with a story/world as big as the wheel of time. Also think it'd be a great medium for giving us a more tangible sense of the geography of the world, the map, lay of the land, where current happenings are taking place, etc
i agree the accessibility is lacking, i had to google how to find the shorts cause i had seen you mentioning them in a previous video. that said, i absolutely love the animation. i audibly gasped when i saw the visualization of saidin - the way the man was fighting his way through a twisting, chaotic storm while the woman floated serenely in juxtaposition. i just feel like it fits the descriptions in the books SO well. and i agree with other commenters that the breaking should have been shown in the first episode, along with the Dragon. one of the non-readers i've shown the first episode was extremely confused and didnt understand why the Dragon was even important.
I quite like these shorts and all the other little bits of adjecent media with the interactive map and snippets of text about many important thins, they are able to cram so much more lore in that way than they ever could with just the show without making it mostly an exposition dump.
I’m glad you talked about how to find them lol I’ve been trying to find it since your last video about the animated shorts. I really appreciate the gaps it fills for us who haven’t yet read the books. Especially ep5 “The White Tower” we hear mention of some of the Aes Sedai’s different factions but it’s never fully explained what all of them are or the process they go through before choosing. Loved that detail in the last short. Also fully agree with the length I get super absorbed into it and it’s over lol would love like 20min ones so they can expand and flesh out some things more.
The way I couldn’t even find them made me not want to even try anymore so I just came here to see what you had to say about them. Glad I wasn’t the only one pissed at the format. Love your content though Daniel :D

Pissed me off, because this would have been so helpful for my wife to see these, as far as her understanding wtf was going on since she is a non-reader. Her exact quote "Why the F--- did they not just put these at the beginning or end of each show." They are great though, once you find them.

Just finished watching "The White Tower"... 100% agree, Primevideo needs an interfacelift. As someone who's reading the WoT for the first time while watching the show, these animated shorts just instilled a completely new level of anticipation and excitement for even MORE content. Just incredibly done.
I so agree with you regarding the accessibility of the x-ray content!! I use Chromecast for all of my TV needs and it really grinds my gears that a) I can only access the bonus content while I have an episode open/playing and b) that content doesn't cast to my TV and I have to watch it on my phone! I know, first world problem, but it's the most annoying thing ever! Also, where are the subtitles?! Some of the audio on these are really quiet. I love these animated vignettes, and we deserve to see them on the big screen. Part of the reason I love the Wheel of Time so much is because of the world building that RJ established, and I'm missing a lot of that in the show (though the most recent ep 5, gave me the world building warm and fuzzies).
My girlfriend who isn’t really into fantasy wasn’t super interested in watching the show but I showed her the Breaking and that short video itself sold her on the show and got her super interested. These videos need to be EVERYWHERE
The White Tower episode was beautiful-I loved the portraits of the ajah's (especially the reds). The grandness of the tower was also captured better in the bonus content than in the episode itself.
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes! Gorgeous, informative, entertaining, insightful, and ridiculously hard to find. An aside: They should also do more with maps in the show itself, and I don't care if they get called out for copying GoT. They could come at the maps from a very different approach, having a woven tapestry map that they zoom out of and into between scenes to show us where we're jumping from and where we're going to. Or just something different from the GoT intro presentation.
I agree whole heartedly with all points. Actually a topic I was looking at earlier today to do a video on, and I COMPLETELY FORGOT HOW TO ACCESS THESE. I spent about 15 minutes trying to "re-find" them. Truly enjoying your content and I try to watch as soon as I have similar topic videos done. (That way I keep my content my own without inadvertently using someone else's ideas/findings. If that does come up, I will obviously credit the content creator who saw it first.)
My guy! I've read the books a couple times over and they are great. I've enjoyed the show for the most part too (I have some annoyances but whatever 😂) I only found out about these through this video! Thank you so much. Just watched them all with the Mrs who hasn't read a single page and this has helped explain and flesh out a few things for her. The art on these are beautiful!

I was able to find all of them on TH-cam thanks to a prince amongst men. An Asha'man if you will, of the highest order. And yeah, these were just awesome. It kinda ticks me off that they're behind such bullshit. Amazon should put them on TH-cam for everyone to watch and advertise the shit out of the show with it. Sometimes I think they want to fail.
This was awesome once I was finally able to figure out I have to watch it on a computer. It was very frustrating that I wasn't able to watch it on my PS4 or phone which is what I use to watch streaming services
I love all of these and whether they intended it or not they've been doing a good job of assuring some of the book fans that they haven't lost their minds and decided to do things that make no sense. The Saidin saidar stone one for example makes it clear to people who had convinced themselves that they had removed one of the defining characteristics of the wheel of time that they haven't and the greatest warder tells us that they know when Matt became an interesting character in the book and don't plan to ignore that.
Oh my fucking god... Didn't know about these (like most people apparently), and they're so fucking good!! With some of the challenges of the show if it ever were to get cancelled I would be COMPLETELY fine with a reboot in this format and style!

This was such a great way to give lore information to non book readers without slowing down the show.
Or you know, they could have just made each episode ten minutes longer and actually told their story in one place instead of hiding all the lore critical parts like they're trying their damndest to hide who the Dragon is.
@@nathanmorgan3647 I mean Yes but I feel they want to create a mystery for the non readers and make them take interest in every action take by all our Emond's field 5 so the audience could find the Dragon Reborn and create intrigue for the new watcher
I would have loved to see the entire content told this way. I love the live action. But it’s so much easier for adaptations to use animation to tell an epic tale such as this, especially with today’s technology. With no need to pay extras, we would be able to see the epic battles of the Wheel of Time.
They better do the Tarmon Gaidon right. The last battle on the last book were several leagues better than the last battle on GOT season 8.

I have not read wheel of times books but I am liking show because it gives similar vibes to lotr even though it is completely different. Daniel is doing great job for new fans.
I made a comment about these on your last episode and im so glad you mansged to do the video! Its sad because every short they did was SO good, to the point it kinda jaded me against the show. Like wait why are you not just doing this for the wheel of time because they're done so well here..
To be completely honest, the bonus content is the only thing Amazon has done whit the Wheel of Time that I really like.
Like you, it took me forever to open these shorts. BUT. they are terrific I've watched each at least 10 times. The story of Manethern is heartbreaking and yet so lovely. Making these videos is a brilliant idea and only enhances the overall series. Hope Amazon continues this practice.

nope. The style is fine for very short segments (less than 5 minutes), but any longer than that, and this would have me rip out my own hair in frustration at the glacial pace

I'm watching it on a TV with Roku. I can hit pause and select x-ray, but the next screen only has: Scenes- In Scene- Bonus Content- Cast- Characters- Trivia.
Scenes clearly allows you to jump to a spot in the episode.
In scene is again obvious.
Bonus Content takes you to maps, concept art, behind the scenes, and episode stills.
Cast is the actors bios.
Characters is the show's bios.
Trivia is book info on things happening in that episode.

Yes, just give me the books in this format. It blows my mind that they could so perfectly bring the books to life in this format, but fall way short in comparison via live action medium. WTF Rafe! These are better than the actual show.
Having finished the season, I’m convinced Rafe was the wrong choice for this series. The shorts, however, are amazing.
@@krtimp Yeah, I really disliked most of the changes, most of them were completely unecessary and a wast of time. I'm completely ok with changes that are necessary to adapt the books to the TV format, but I don't like they coming up with a bunch of crap that takes away time that could be use to actually adapt the book. But most directors have such inflated ego that they need to change stuff to satisfy it, because they think the book is not good enough and they can do better.
There are so many ways your COULD use these shorts:
- present each short after each episode like GoT did with the behind the scenes or at the beginning like in Pixar movies
-incorporate moments into the show (eg a few frames into the manetheren speech) with a title card after each episode saying where to watch them
- release them on TH-cam as a free series to build hype

As a military history nerd I wish the Live Action matched the weapons and armour used in the animations. Those were very well done compared to what we see live.
It's a small quibble but seeing double headed axes always makes me shake my head...
" but seeing double headed axes always makes me shake my head..." Agreed. When I first saw a still of the axes used by Stepin, I was REALLY worried that was going to be Perrin's axe. Those hardly functional pieces of crap just scream LARPER. Thin and broad or short and thick is just about all the axes should ever be. Especially since Rand's sword and Lan's are very reasonable looking.
@@justiny5385 agreed. I sort of wish the swords were not so obviously katanas, but they are nice examples of them.
I always imagined the Swords as katana blades with western hilts, or even a Swiss Sabre style sword.
All Warders used swords in books, I don't like the idea of changing this in the series - it doesn't bring any value to the show and it detracts from the books. Warders were trained to become blade masters, not jacks of all trades. Giving and axe to a Warder is like giving a sword to an Aiel. Honestly that's my biggest criticism to the show so far

These animations are so gorgeous! When I searched "Wheel of Time" on my fire stick, all of the bonus content came up, listed as season one, episode zero. They were much easier to hear on the tv.

These are so good and getting no play. They should be placed before the show as a sort of prologue to the episode. I feel like this would really heighten the overall experience (especially for non-readers). Plus, they're just a great mood setter in general. There's so much potential to develop these into something incredible in the long-term too. These prologue/companions pieces could be tailored to each episode and provide us with so much more information than could possibly be translated into the episodes directly. This is huge with a story/world as big as the wheel of time. Also think it'd be a great medium for giving us a more tangible sense of the geography of the world, the map, lay of the land, where current happenings are taking place, etc
i agree the accessibility is lacking, i had to google how to find the shorts cause i had seen you mentioning them in a previous video.
that said, i absolutely love the animation. i audibly gasped when i saw the visualization of saidin - the way the man was fighting his way through a twisting, chaotic storm while the woman floated serenely in juxtaposition. i just feel like it fits the descriptions in the books SO well.
and i agree with other commenters that the breaking should have been shown in the first episode, along with the Dragon. one of the non-readers i've shown the first episode was extremely confused and didnt understand why the Dragon was even important.

I quite like these shorts and all the other little bits of adjecent media with the interactive map and snippets of text about many important thins, they are able to cram so much more lore in that way than they ever could with just the show without making it mostly an exposition dump.

I’m glad you talked about how to find them lol I’ve been trying to find it since your last video about the animated shorts. I really appreciate the gaps it fills for us who haven’t yet read the books. Especially ep5 “The White Tower” we hear mention of some of the Aes Sedai’s different factions but it’s never fully explained what all of them are or the process they go through before choosing. Loved that detail in the last short. Also fully agree with the length I get super absorbed into it and it’s over lol would love like 20min ones so they can expand and flesh out some things more.
The way I couldn’t even find them made me not want to even try anymore so I just came here to see what you had to say about them. Glad I wasn’t the only one pissed at the format. Love your content though Daniel :D

Pissed me off, because this would have been so helpful for my wife to see these, as far as her understanding wtf was going on since she is a non-reader. Her exact quote "Why the F--- did they not just put these at the beginning or end of each show." They are great though, once you find them.

Just finished watching "The White Tower"... 100% agree, Primevideo needs an interfacelift. As someone who's reading the WoT for the first time while watching the show, these animated shorts just instilled a completely new level of anticipation and excitement for even MORE content. Just incredibly done.

I so agree with you regarding the accessibility of the x-ray content!! I use Chromecast for all of my TV needs and it really grinds my gears that a) I can only access the bonus content while I have an episode open/playing and b) that content doesn't cast to my TV and I have to watch it on my phone! I know, first world problem, but it's the most annoying thing ever! Also, where are the subtitles?! Some of the audio on these are really quiet.
I love these animated vignettes, and we deserve to see them on the big screen. Part of the reason I love the Wheel of Time so much is because of the world building that RJ established, and I'm missing a lot of that in the show (though the most recent ep 5, gave me the world building warm and fuzzies).

My girlfriend who isn’t really into fantasy wasn’t super interested in watching the show but I showed her the Breaking and that short video itself sold her on the show and got her super interested. These videos need to be EVERYWHERE
Definitely the best WoT content :). Not that the bar was particularly high, but it just is excellent captivating story telling
The White Tower episode was beautiful-I loved the portraits of the ajah's (especially the reds). The grandness of the tower was also captured better in the bonus content than in the episode itself.
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes! Gorgeous, informative, entertaining, insightful, and ridiculously hard to find.
An aside: They should also do more with maps in the show itself, and I don't care if they get called out for copying GoT. They could come at the maps from a very different approach, having a woven tapestry map that they zoom out of and into between scenes to show us where we're jumping from and where we're going to. Or just something different from the GoT intro presentation.

I agree whole heartedly with all points. Actually a topic I was looking at earlier today to do a video on, and I COMPLETELY FORGOT HOW TO ACCESS THESE. I spent about 15 minutes trying to "re-find" them. Truly enjoying your content and I try to watch as soon as I have similar topic videos done. (That way I keep my content my own without inadvertently using someone else's ideas/findings. If that does come up, I will obviously credit the content creator who saw it first.)
My guy! I've read the books a couple times over and they are great. I've enjoyed the show for the most part too (I have some annoyances but whatever 😂) I only found out about these through this video! Thank you so much. Just watched them all with the Mrs who hasn't read a single page and this has helped explain and flesh out a few things for her. The art on these are beautiful!

And yeah, these were just awesome. It kinda ticks me off that they're behind such bullshit. Amazon should put them on TH-cam for everyone to watch and advertise the shit out of the show with it. Sometimes I think they want to fail.
i LOVE THEM as someone who is coming to this world and story for the first time but enjoys fantasy lore and has read a lot of other fantasy series.

It's far better than the show itself
This was awesome once I was finally able to figure out I have to watch it on a computer. It was very frustrating that I wasn't able to watch it on my PS4 or phone which is what I use to watch streaming services
I love all of these and whether they intended it or not they've been doing a good job of assuring some of the book fans that they haven't lost their minds and decided to do things that make no sense. The Saidin saidar stone one for example makes it clear to people who had convinced themselves that they had removed one of the defining characteristics of the wheel of time that they haven't and the greatest warder tells us that they know when Matt became an interesting character in the book and don't plan to ignore that.
Oh my fucking god... Didn't know about these (like most people apparently), and they're so fucking good!! With some of the challenges of the show if it ever were to get cancelled I would be COMPLETELY fine with a reboot in this format and style!
