Schuberth C4 Basic helmet review

  • So this is a helmet that doesn’t get talked about a lot. It’s basically a down-spec’d version of the C4 Pro; but only insofar as it comes without all the pre-wired comms. stuff. Not everybody wants to to be able to talk to others whilst they’re riding, or to be distracted by music or commands from a satnav. And if this is the case, you don’t really want to have to pay for all the wiring, speakers and other stuff that you’re never going to need. The Basic is £100 cheaper than the Pro, so if you like peace and quiet, the C4 Basic may be the way to go.
Sticking with this theme, the other reason you might want to go for the Basic is that it’s now the quietest helmet in the Schuberth range. By filling in with foam the slots where, on the Pro, you would have put the battery and brains modules, Schuberth has removed a weak point for noise reverberation. So the Basic is quieter than the 4 Pro; but Schuberth reckon it’s also quieter than the C3 Pro, which makes it probably the quietest helmet on the market.
For those of you who remember all the issues with the first C4, don’t worry. All those problems have been resolved. The C4 Pro is now a cracking helmet and, in theory, because there’s less to go wrong with it, the Basic should be even more reliable than a Pro.
The helmet has all the features you’d expect to find on a good quality flip-lid; everything you’d find on a C3 0r a Neotec. But there is one thing we’re a little disappointed about. In fact, disappointed may be an understatement. But to explain why we’re disappointed, we might need to go over old history a little.
One of the issues with the original C4 in fact probably the key issue was that the cheap, lookalike Pinlock with which it came wasn’t up to the job of keeping the C4’s large visor clear of condensation. They remedied the situation after there was pressure from ‘difficult’ retailers, but given their recent history we are gobsmacked that Schuberth should once again attempt to cut corners and supply this helmet with a cheaper 70 Pinlock. In truth, we don’t really know whether the 70 will be up to the job, but given all the problems with the C4, why take the risk?
But apart from this, the C4 Basic is a great lid. It is super quiet, it’s got pretty much all the bells and whistles you’d ever need and, at £450, we think it’s very well priced. If you’re interested, and want full chapter and verse, hear out what the Chap in the Cap has to say. Call it due diligence.

Just fitted a Sena S5 comms to this helmet (C4 Basic) and it was really easy to do, speakers fitted in the recesses provided, speaker wires fitted in behind the liner, boom mic secured using velcro tape and lastly the unit connection wires clipped in behind the neck roll securing. This helmet is a big step up from my C3 Pro and came fitted with a Pinlock 120, this and the visor are a big improvement. Highly recommended.

I have the C3 basic. Upgraded the interior with the C3 Inner liner. Fits perfectly. Much more comfortable. Great helmet.

I purchased a C2 that I use mostly for track days and on odd occasions. I have a C3 for general use and is very good. I wish I had stopped there, but was tempted by a built in communication system. I now use my C4 if I want to be deafened, have the visor pop open every five minutes and ride in a drafty cold environment. The larger visor is of no use as most of it is missed over most of the time. A lesson learned.

Does it come with a pinlock visor already installed??

Gotten C4 Basic today, it's very quiet compared to my old Premier Delta helmet. But the chin vent does cause a constant whistle, so you'll be force to tape it shut.

Thank you for this review, it opened my eyes about my pinlock. I put the original pinlock on a tinted visor and ordered other pinlock for the clear visor, and it wasn't good. Why? Because it was 70!!!! I never checked... I am such an idiot...

Always good to hear the history behind a product

Hi there, thanks for the comparison with the C3 Pro. I own it (C3 Pro) since years and I have been happy with it. Now after like 8 years it is time to change. I was tempted by the C4 Basic but when I read specs, it shows 85 db (A) at 100 km/h for the C4 Basic where the C3 Pro is noted at 82 db (A). Here we talk about noise and not about soundproofing, so that it seems the good old C3 Pro is even quieter than the new C4 Basic. Every 3 db the sound/noise is doubled by 2 so that it is a huge difference. At least on the paper. Did you do a real test comparison (run test) with both C3 Pro and C4 Basic? That would be interesting ... thanks a lot

Quietest? Wow, strong statement considering shoei just updated their neotec 2 for 2021 with specific improvements to noise

Well, we cannot draw a comparison with a helmet that hasn’t been released yet but, at this point in time, we think our claim is justified. And, as ever, we don’t formulate our views based on a quick trip around the block. Now, we reckon the C3 Pro and the Neotec 2 are very much in the same ball park. If the fit on the C3 Pro is good it is very quiet, but the problem is that if the helmet doesn’t fit nicely around the cheeks, there’s not a lot we can do about it. The Neotec 2 is also a quiet helmet and, of course, by custom fitting it to a rider we can make it as good as it can be. But a smoother helmet is a helmet that doesn’t disturb as much air, as a consequence of which, other things being equal, it will be a quieter helmet. The Neotec is not particularly aerodynamic. The C4 is. To make the C4 pro a quieter helmet than the C4, Schuberth stuffed it with extra sound deadening materials wherever they could add it; it worked. It’s a very quiet helmet. But for the reasons explained in the video, the Basic is even quieter; as confirmed by Schuberth’s wind tunnel testing. Not sure, therefore, that you can question our findings; especially as you’re basing your assumptions on a helmet that is still three months away from release, and that nobody has tested. We don’t, I’m afraid, base our reviews on what manufacturers say in their marketing materials. If we did, we would re-name our reviews ‘Press Releases’. Other retailers may be happy to regurgitate what they are told, but if you’ve watched or read any of our reviews, you will know that this is not our style. Finally, you might not be surprised to learn that Shoei changed its cheekpads solely to combat criticisms about noise levels. That’s not a great starting point. Only time will tell if they have solved the problem. But it seems unlikely that the Neotec will go from ‘not sufficiently quiet’ to ‘quietest on the market’ by merely improving the cheekpads. But we’ll see!

June 2021 Schuberth website states the c4 pro comes with pinlock 120, since I've just ordered the C4 Basic I'm hoping that version has had the upgrade as well.... thanks for the review
