This is an excellent video and you nail a lot of the pros and cons of this unit. I do have a couple of comments though..... First - are you using the C4 helmet rather than the C4 Pro? (looks like it). If so, then the "sock in the mouth" intercom has been fixed because the C4 Pro puts the microphone where it should be (at mouth level on the left), but the original C4 had it up above the forehead for some reason. Second - I would strongly recommend the use of a Sena RC4 remote with this setup. It's a 4 button remote that clamps to the handlebar (although only 3 of the four buttons are used for the SC1) and just makes it much easier and more intuitive to use. It's about $70 and should really come in the box, but it is what it is.... All in all, I would much prefer if Schuberth had used an easier UI - for example the speech that the Cardo PackTalk uses and had incorporated Mesh intercom, but again, it is what it is. Finally- your comment on it being hard to pair is correct for non-Sena headsets (10 seconds on the + or - button plus then 18 presses on the + button (yes....18!!! Come on Sena). But pairing with other Sena headsets is much simpler - it's simply a 1 second press on the - button to get into intercom mode, then a tap on the + button. Anyway - RC4 on the bars makes things easier - although you still have to memorise a load of button sequences.... Thanks a lot for the video. Very nicely done!
What a great review I've 20s well over ten years on multiple helmets never missed a beat and still going strong and done thousand of miles. I was looking at your helmet with the built-in now into thinking twice about it now 👍
Many thanks for a very comprehensive review. I have been a fan of Schuberth and have had the C3 and E1. From your review and others which I have read, the Cons outweigh the Pros in respect of the SC1. I am now considering the Shoei Neotech II with the built-in comms system.
Hi from Sydney, Australia. I bought the SC1 with remote control for my C4 Pro to find the buttons (on both the helmet and the remote) too small especially with mid weight or winter gloves. Sound reception is very good and my 'audience' also hears me clearly even when I'm going 120 kph. Intercom is good though can drop out occasionally. It should be mandatory to check for firmware updates.
Thanks for this great review and very honest, Ive just bought a C4 Pro Helmet and am looking at getting this very system, I don't really go out that much with other riders or listen to music just phone and GPS so i guess this is a good option for me, thank you Moto Travel USA
You’re welcome, thanks for stopping by. I’ve heard some of the issues have been fixed using it with the c4 pro- such as the mic, but haven’t tested it myself. 👍
Thx for the video. I also really wanted this helmet with sena to work for me. I really feel like waiting because surly all the negative reviews will get some improved technology happening from schuberth, sena, or possibly shoei
I realize this is an older video, but I'm going to ask a question anyway, and hopefully you'll get it. Thank you for the review. It was very informative. So first off, I am an American living in Germany. I have been here for 6 years. When I left the US, I had a 2008 R1200R and absolutely loved it. But being a naked bike, they didnt have radios, built in GPS, intercom set ups etc. So basically I had a bike I loved, and a comfy helmet and that was it. Well one divorce later, and I am returning to the US, and I just purchased a brand new 2020 R1250RT with every option available including the Nav VI. I have heard some poor remarks regarding the stereos not being heard above 60 mph. That is unacceptable, especially if you're paying for that XM Sirius satellite service. Now typically, I ride alone, no friends to ride with usually, because I am retired military, and that happened pretty young, and most of my friends are still working in their early 50's, and when I go out on the road, I'm gone for weeks at a time as a long distance tour rider. Something about being in the saddle all day, and sleeping in a tent at night. I freaking love it. Taking a shower every few days at a truck stop or a family member that just happens to be along the way, but seeing the countryside. I just get the biggest kick out of it. But now, I find myself with a new bike, with some of the most advanced features available, stuff I would have never dreamed of, and it all happened to bikes and helmets, while I was out of the loop, in Europe, and I'm trying to play catch up before I get home and go pick up my new bike. Also, because of my age (57), I am pretty much "technology challenged". I completely missed that whole computer generation. My daughter was 4 years old and already had her own TH-cam channel, and I was just completely amazed. Me, if it doesn't have a knob, I can get lost pretty quickly. It would all be fixed, if the BMW had an available plug in amp that could be added to the new RT's lol. The last time I had a stereo on a bike, was on a 1997 HD Ultra Classic Electra Glide. The stereo was definitely quite loud enough to hear, with a full face helmet on. Alas, BMW doesn't have that option that I have discovered yet. So here I am, looking for a brain bucket with all the necessary tech to connect to my bike with full function etc. I am looking at the Schuberth C4 Pro, because everything is already included etc, simply plug and play or so they say. Last time I tried adding a system to an existing helmet, just so I could make and take phone calls while riding was a couple of years ago, and it was a complete failure. Don't remember which system it was, only that the one time my now ex-wife called me while I was riding, neither of us could hear the other. I haven't tried again since. So with all that said, and my challenges announced, and my bike expressed, is the C4 Pro and the SC1 drop in unit, the best option? I see the available remote control has a couple extra buttons, and it's not on the back of my head where it's difficult to reach etc. But of course that's an extra couple of hundred dollars too. AND, it clips to the left handlebar, where it could potentially interfere with the wonder wheel on the RT. Just seems to be one problem fixed, only to potentially create additional issues. From what I can tell, on the new RT, it seems like pretty much everything connects through the Nav 6. Once everything is connected, you have full functionality into the brain bucket. But that is a lot of stuff to control, like you said on your SC1 review, with only 2 buttons. And trying to remember all that, I can already tell, is going to be a problem for me. I would probably just go with the SC2 on the side of some HJC modular helmet to save a ton of $$, if I hadn't already had a major fail trying to integrate a system like this, or maybe it was that exact system, I don't know. The sound quality was garbage, and the one phone call was impossible, and most likely it was because I had the speakers in the wrong place for my ears. Again, I don't know. If there is another system already prewired in a helmet, that would probably work better for my needs, I am completely open to suggestions! With this Covid19 problems going around now, getting into a shop and talking to a salesperson is impossible. The only option I have is buying online. I tried to purchase the BMW System 7 carbon several times now, only to find out later, after I had already spent the money via Paypal, that they were out of that color, or size or several other reasons. I'm still waiting on the refunds for those purchases. :( So any advice you have, I am all ears, and would DEFINITELY appreciate the input!!!! Thank you very much, hoping you read this and can respond to the small book I wrote above. Sorry the post is so darn long. Bob in Germany
Great thorough review. Similar quirkiness with the SRL for neotech II. Once you get gas and turn off the gps thats on the bikes ignition switch... you have to restart everything and repair the intercom with friends. BOOOOOO. I know its not as straight forward, but Why don't they just make it work like turning on the radio in the car??? THAT'S OUR EXPECTATION! Soooo I took back the whole system. Now I have the AGV modular carbon and was told they were coming out with an integrated unit this summer 2019. By sena also. I ordered a Domio just in case.
Why do the consumers have to be the beta testers, you would think these companies would test out their products in real life situations to make sure everything works ok. :(
On the C4 (not C4 Pro), I believe to microphone is located in the forehead pad section. Right above your eyebrows you can feel two holes covered by the mesh. I'm assuming that the microphone(s) is(are) inside one or both of those holes. It's been moved to a different location on the C4 Pro, probably to improve performance. I was considering the SC1 for my early C4, but after reading these threads I'm less than convinced that it's a good idea on the early C4.
Great videos and thank you. My experience with telephone calls using a Schubert M1 Pro and their commas unit the SC1M has not been good. People can not hear me clearly due to low microphone gain. A real shame as speakers are superb. Not a usable solution for me as need to have reasonable call quality. I like the helmet. I use it for under 30mph journeys in and around London. For intercity trips, I’ve opted for a Shoei NXR 2 and currently looking at comms without the need to stick a unit on the side. Wondered if you or anyone have had issues with the SC1M? Thanks for your excellent work.
I have run into the same sort of issues with the buttons on the Sena SLR which is an integrated system for the Shoei Neotec 2. The speakers are further away from my ears than my 20S, the buttons are also smaller and awkward to use with gloves on.
I totally agree with your review bought one a couple of weeks ago and I’m trying to get return refund, so I can get a cardio system to stick onto my Schuberth helmet a waste of time getting this helmet. Can’t add pillion cardio to my SC1, can’t get firmware upgrade because it will not recognise it on computer, battery is loose in holder and disconnects as it makes poor contact. So it’s only good if you want to hear radio or talk to myself. Great idea in principle poor system in reality thanks for you video just wished I did I my research before hand and found your review.
Bought the C4 a year ago and the SC1 worked great then it didnt. Hit a bump or a light jarring of the helmet and the SC1 shuts down.... Thought it was a battery issue replaced same thing now it seems to be contact issue or a bad contact issue for the battery wiring internal to the helmet wiggle the battery you can start it up again hit a bump it shuts down again! Took Helmet apart no access to the wiring! Nice helmet but if the bluetooth isn't working well not happy!
MotoTravelUSA Did that for awhile it worked most of the time but the battery door is weak . Jammed tape down the side to deflect it to one side which seemed to be the opposite of were it looses connection and that’s not enough either.... Pretty expensive helmet and Bluetooth unit to do all this... But thanks hopefully SCHUBERTH will make good on this defect.
In my opinion, It is very difficult to get the SC1 to pair with other makes of coms. When I did successfully pair the sound was so poor I could hear the other rider but not clear enough to understand what was said. Very disappointed
Great review...Man BT seems to still be so uncertain among the motorcycle stuff..have gotten to the point when riding and paired up I', kinda like."everybody leave their stuff on when we stop for lunch....strangely at times me and my wife just oddly disconnect with our Sena's....but another buddy of mine when we ride..we never disconnect...great vid.
No I haven’t sorry. I see that the 2.0 firmware has been released so I will do a video soon. TH-camr TouringMidwest did a Sena firmware update video that should be very similar to updating the SC1 firmware, since it’s made by sena too.
I have grown to hate micro USB. Do you have it in the right direction? Why should I have to care? USB-C and even lightening port cables I don’t have to care. One day they will catch up.
Thanks for the review. Just bought a C4. I Have the old Sena smh10 and was thinking about upgrading to the integrated Schubert sr1, but after seeing your video I think I'm going to maintain my old sena. Watch is your opinion?
My "Schuberth C4" helmet looks like it has speakers installed, behind the cheek pads, .... but, I'm not seeing any obvious microphone, anywhere!!??... Where is it, (what does it look like?....)
Someone else commented that the remote does not help :/ too bad, it’s such an awesome idea, just the implementation is poor. Hopefully the next iteration is much better.
Considering that the helmet comes with the microphone and speakers already installed, I feel that the communicator is overpriced. You get two modules in the box. Seems like it should have been priced as such.
Too bad that that activation of a voice assistant isn't voice-activated by saying Hey Siri/Ok Google. I assume that the hardware which is used is simply too old for such a functionality. Only recently do Bluetooth headsets come with voice-activated voice assistants. Also for these prices they should have added DAB+ receivers in my opinion.
Here ya go.. Hold down the + button for 2 seconds to pause the music, then hold down the + button for 3 seconds (just like if you were going to skip to the next track) wait a while and then Siri says hello!
Thanks for your very honest review. Can you confirm which firmware update you currently have installed please? My helmet retailer states that firmware update 2.0 resolves the microphonec muffles and simplifies the interface. Have you found this to be correct? I love the helmet but my choose another if the comms system is poor. Thanks very much.
I actually haven’t updated the firmware until reading your post to help answer some of your questions. Unfortunately, it brought up a new problem, now the SC1 with 2.0.1 won’t connect to my TOMTOM rider GPS and it doesn’t seem to be an isolated issue doing a quick search, looks like many are having the same issue not being able to connect their TOMTOM riders. :/ it connected great to sc1 with 1.x. I’m going to do some testing and contact tech support to see if there’s a resolution. Sorry I couldn’t help more
THANKS FOR THIS GOOD REVIEW! I RECENTLY BOUGHT THIS HELMET. NOW, I'LL LIKELY GO AHEAD AND BUY THE SC1 TO GO WITH IT. I HOPE THAT THEY HAVE FIXED THE "FIRMWARE" ISSUES, AS NEEDED. FYI: WHEN YOU MENTION "HOLDING THE PLUS (+) BUTTON, YOU ARE PRESSING THE MINUS(-) BUTTON!!!(~@)...WTH?!.... IMHO: DEMONSTRATIONS NEED TO BE PRECISELY ACCURATE, .....OTHERWISE, YOU JUST CREATE MORE CONFUSION. IMHO: YOU SEEM TO BE "TAILGATING" THAT JUNK HAULING PICK-UP TRUCK, AT THE START OF THIS VIDEO. (COUNT SECONDS BETWEEN THEM AND YOU => ONLY ABOUT 1.5 SEC.)
I have one of these and IT SUCKS!! I've spent over 7 months so far dicking with Schuberth and SENA just trying to get this piece of garbage updated with ZERO success. If I actually have a defective unit I'll most likely never get it replaced because Schuberth and SENA have dragged this out so long. Because of this, I'll NEVER buy anything SENA or Schuberth ever again. Sure, I like the Schuberth helmet but since their customer support sucks so badly they are on my 'never again' list!
worst helmet and comms i ever bought, i had to cut my losses and sold the helmet after 3 weeks. i will never buy a schuberth again. at considerable expense. helmet battery comms, not much change out of900 dollars and was a waste of my time and money
Curious, since I am in the market for a helmet to match up with a 2020 R1250RT with all the bells and whistles, what helmet and comms system did you end up going with? All this new technology stuff wasn't an issue with my last naked bike. Didn't even have a radio. I never took phone calls when I was riding, since my purpose was to actually ride. But I am seriously "tech illiterate" and way behind on what the new bikes are capable of. The R1250RT is a drop dead gorgeous bike, IMO, but the tech really has me spun around backwards. With all the issues I've heard about on this set up, I'm really hoping there is a better alternative. Something easier to operate, with less problems. Thanks, Bob in Germany

I would be interested in a firmware update video. I can't seemed to turn on the unit while connected to my computer as required. Thx.
Totally agree with u. Not a fan of my sc1 advanced. How did u connect ur mic to the cam? Nice sound for motovlogging
I have run into the same sort of issues with the buttons on the Sena SLR which is an integrated system for the Shoei Neotec 2. The speakers are further away from my ears than my 20S, the buttons are also smaller and awkward to use with gloves on.

Managed to get full refund and now have duel cardio works well
Bought the C4 a year ago and the SC1 worked great then it didnt. Hit a bump or a light jarring of the helmet and the SC1 shuts down.... Hello, how do I pair my SC1 Advanced with the TFT panel of the BMW 1250 motorcycle? The configuration of the bike I can do, but Intercom can not do.
Thanks MemphisMike
Thanks for the review. I was thinking about buying this thing, but now, I’m not so sure.
Some people have said that some of the issues have been resolved in the c4 pro. Great concept, hopefully they do a better iteration.
Shit ! I bought it before I WATCH ! I agree all you comments. I still have my Sena 20 S on the old helmet.
A lot of big bikes (KTM 1290) allow the control from the handlebar buttons. You can take a call, hang up (for me that's enough)
did you do a firmware update video for the SC1 advance?
No I haven’t sorry. I see that the 2.0 firmware has been released so I will do a video soon. TH-camr TouringMidwest did a Sena firmware update video that should be very similar to updating the SC1 firmware, since it’s made by sena too.
Have they fixed the issues?
I have grown to hate micro USB. Do you have it in the right direction? Why should I have to care? USB-C and even lightening port cables I don’t have to care. One day they will catch up.
Would it still be possible for me to attach my old sena 10s on this helmet?
Thanks for the review. Just bought a C4. I Have the old Sena smh10 and was thinking about upgrading to the integrated Schubert sr1, but after seeing your video I think I'm going to maintain my old sena. Watch is your opinion?
I’d try to see if you can install your old unit, especially if you’re happy with it.
You talked about the intercom how are phone calls? Do you experience the same problems as you did with the intercom. Any help would be great.
My "Schuberth C4" helmet looks like it has speakers installed, behind the cheek pads, .... but, I'm not seeing any obvious microphone, anywhere!!??...

Would the remote control that gets installed on the bars solve most of the issues?
Someone else commented that the remote does not help :/ too bad, it’s such an awesome idea, just the implementation is poor. Hopefully the next iteration is much better.
I didnt realize sc1 setup could be removed from c4. So I bought sc1. Otherwise I would have gotten pettalk cardo or use my other sena
Hey! I’m not getting Siri to work. How do you do that?
Sorry I couldn’t help more
@@MotoTravelUSA I'm sorry I mentioned it! UKGSers website has some posts that I can dig out 're solutions and send you links?
Agreed...every once in a while i purchase a "whoops" also 😳
Just get the SENA RC4 work great with this unit....
Good suggestion. I did not try the unit with the remote for this review.
Really?
Come on, get a life chap, don’t criticise someone’s riding abilities until we’ve seen yours!!!!
This video just killed the product. not buying it until they make a better one....
