  • This is our take on the GS vario cases. These cases were on one of our bikes when we purchased. Great cases but perhaps limited to tarmac touring.
Good function and mounting and removal is a breeze. You decide if these are right for you!!

Another useful video thanks. I purchased the 2 side vario cases 3 years ago and paid just over GBP500 a pair which by todays value is pretty good. They are heavy but that reflects the quality and the sturdiness. The locks are good and as you showed they are really easy to fit and take off.

Great video :) Agree with all the points! After dropping the bike a couple of times, the corners do scuff but they've proved to be a lot more robust than they look at first! The surfaces that get scratched are very easy to replace...but the scratches add character :P These cases also have outstanding waterproofing, where they've survived 2 disgustingly wet British winters perfectly! Regarding the missing extra luggage carrying capacity on top of the cases, Wunderlich make an adapter plate specifically for these Vario cases so you can tie on tents / bags etc to the top. I've had them on my cases for about the last 10,000km and they carry extra roll bags super easy and securely. One con would be about the key barrels, and how they are very exposed, so dirt and salt quickly finds its way into the barrel mechanism and it can get quite stiff without some lubrication every now and then! Great video :)

I carry Teflon lube for the locks. Not conducive to dust.

What's the name of this adapter plate if I want to find it in the US? Thanks!

I fitted brackets to the top of both side cases to carry lightweight items. No drilling required, just screwed into existing fittings. My main con would be the empty weight of the cases, but when you consider security & water tight I’m still happy for road touring.

In the comments, I’m told there are brackets you can purchase. And I agree they are heavy when empty. Thanks for watching and ride safe.

Could you please let me know how you fit the brackets? A photo would help explain the same. Thanks in advance.

I agree with you in all points. Some pros with the varios. The top case and the left bag can store a motorcycle helmet. Not sure if they can handle a adventure type helmet, but a normal full face helmet. Another pros that I think you mentioned, the bike is “clean” when taking them of. For some people that can almost be a deal breaker.
Some cons they are big and heavy compared to the luggage volume. They Are small inside.
The facts that they are side loaded is neutral, but they should have some type of luggage net built in. There’s one thing that’s ponders me. As you mentioned, people loads bags and tents and a lot of equipment on top of their panniers. But the recommended load capacity is 8kg for the panniers and 5 for the top case. 10kg for the panniers on the bigger GS. If you fill the panniers with normal things they reach 8kg before they are full. If people carry other things then balloons in their panniers most people probably carry 15 to 20kg in each panniers.
How much is OK to load before it starts to be a security risk. 8,10,12,15kg?

      @OurGSJourney  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

All great points as well. I didn’t realize the side case can hold a helmet.
In terms of loading and weight and safety. Most bikes are prepared to accommodate a passenger. Say 60 to 70 kg. Maybe more. With some common sense, I believe you can load more in the cases and especially in aluminum cases. Suspension however should be reviewed and adjusted accordingly. Tire pressure should be reviewed. All together making a safe set up and ride. I should also mention our bikes suspension adjust at a touch of a button. Thanks for watching.

@@OurGSJourney thanks, then I probably don’t have to worry so much of the weight, on the panniers I mean 😂

Hello! I thought the mechanism to reduce the size of the topbox was not very useful, and also there were some mechanical parts inside which were just messy and served no purpose, so I decided to remove them; I hanged a system to hold external fuel bottles on each side to compensate for the lack of stability once I removed the mecanic parts and it's working pretty well; I also added a grill on top of the topcase I had to drill manually and works quite well.
For the side cases I also installed at each side a metal device that allows to carry some extra bags on top and then I got some extra room. Overall I am constantly looking at exchanging them for the Lone Riders or the Touratech Zegas but since they are in perfect working order I don't see the need. Maybe after a couple falls it starts making sense; let's see 🙂

Hi and thanks for your comments
      All good stuff
We see exchanging them for a soft bag in the future. Lone Rider makes a bracket less bay

Hi and thanks for watching. We love everything about our GS bikes except for the seats. We will be upgrading. I thought after a year they would get better.
Look for a video on our 1 year review.

    RE: durability
I had vario on my 2003 650gs. I dropped them at 100Km an hour on the highway. And the Box was structurally intact. It was dropped because i did not attach it properly.
