  • “Manhã de Carnaval” (“Carnival Morning”) by Luiz Bonfá. It was featured in the 1959 movie “Orfeu Negro (Black Orpheus)”, a retelling of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, reset in 20th century Brazil. The French director Marcel Camus directed the film, based on a play by Vinícius de Moraes, a prolific Brazilian poet, writer, lyricist and diplomat. The film Black Orpheus was an international success winning many awards including an Academy Award in 1960 for best foreign film. With all this international exposure the song became known as a milestone of the beginning of the Bossa Nova movement.
On a side note, this song is also quite personal for us since Marpessa’s name was inspired by the Greek myth and the African American actress Marpessa Dawn who played the female main character in the movie.
Marpessa DeMoraes - vocals and classical guitar (Craviola)
Renato De Moraes - alto flute
