  • @SteelSkin667
    @SteelSkin667 7 ปีที่แล้ว +44

    Here's a fun story : When I bought my 'late 2013' Retina from the refurb store (they were doing a refresh at the time, so the computer was essentially new), it was actually cheaper than a similarly spec'd Windows laptop. It has a 2.6 Ghz Haswell i5, 8GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD. I basically consider that purchase as being the best deal I've ever made in my life, especially since I've used it all the way through my master's degree (in software engineering), and still use it to this day. I'm really going to hang onto this thing, but the raised prices and lack of I/O on recent models might mean that when/if my Mac dies, I'll have to go back to another manufacturer.

    • @jessechen4971
      @jessechen4971 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't get why I/O is an issue for people. Many peripherals can go wireless and perform very. Then there is the cloud. Having a usb and ethernet on my 2012 MPB is more of a backup that is rarely used. Yourself?

    • @SteelSkin667
      @SteelSkin667 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With the exception of the thunderbolt ports (which have never been used), I've been using all of the I/O on my MBP one more than one occasion. I sometimes bring that computer to places where I have no access to the Internet, and being able to just plug in a standard thumb drive is pretty nice. I've also been using a wired Xbox controller on more than one occasion. The HDMI port doesn't get a ton of use, but I've been plugging the computer in TVs a couple of times. I've even used that Mac to run some indie games at a party, again using all the USB ports to plug in controllers.
      Honestly I wouldn't have felt butthurt about the I/O if they had included at least two standard USB type A ports. TB3 is perfectly adequate for all the rest.

  • @Astfgl
    @Astfgl 7 ปีที่แล้ว +770

    I've owned the new MacBook Pro 13" since november of last year, and I've grown to really love it. I have the same base model (no touch bar) but with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of SSD. It's an acquired taste to be sure, and I wasn't certain at first whether I would like the butterfly keyboard and how the limited port selection would turn out, but as you said in this video, once you're used to it everything else just feels primitive.
    The old MacBook Pro's keyboard feels mushy when compared to the clicky second gen butterfly keys. The old touchpad is cramped and being able to click only at the bottom of the touchpad feels really awkward now. I've also previously used a Dell XPS 15 for half a year (that was early 2016) and overall I came away with a feeling of "meh". It's not as ergonomic as I thought it would be based on looks, the battery life was mediocre at best, and Windows 10 had all sorts of small annoying issues where it wouldn't play nice with the laptop's hardware. I didn't miss it for a second after I turned it back in again.
    MacOS isn't a problem for me. I'm proficient in using all three major OS'es, and as a software developer it's good to have direct access to all three as well. So many people lock themselves into a single OS and refuse to touch anything else, but being flexible and able to switch between OS'es on the fly really is a big advantage when dealing with cross-platform software systems.
    Finally, the MBP's portability is just awesome. Being able to casually carry it in one hand to a meeting, then flip open the screen and start typing without worrying about battery life or bringing a gazillion attachments, that never gets old.

      MagSafe was great, but it's just not as big of a deal anymore because battery life has improved & you'll hardly have to charge your MacBook in dangerous situations. Also, it's no longer proprietary & there are third-party magnetic ends to add on if you still want that.

      The extension cords will work for your macbook pro 2017, as I have an extension cord which was for my old 2011 macbook pro, and you can just switch them off and on anytime you want. The charging block that plugs into your outlet still has a option to use other cords.

    • @pandaengine
      @pandaengine 7 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      *A quick update to my comment*
      The issue was purely with the screen brightness. I didn't even realize that my screen brightness was always above 75%. Since the screen is 67% more bright on the new models, it eats up battery A LOT. Also, auto brightness was causing it to turn up most of the time, I disabled it. After that, I've tried to turn it down to 50%, AND I GOT 10 HOURS OF BATTERY. It was that simple. The battery life is great. No doubt.

    I bought the 15", so I didn't have the choice to get the Touch Bar or not, I have found it useful when watching movies, because you can scrub, but most apps don't support it, so you just end up having the control strip expanded the whole time. One thing that I am interested in is how well that handles heat, as the non touchbar pro only has one fan, compared to the two you usually get

    I also have the 13 inch MacBook Pro, (typing on it right now) and honestly I find no use for the ports besides for charging. As long as you have an iPhone, you can seamlessly migrate files to and from with ease, and most things I do now are on google drive, so I have no need to use a flash drive to store my files, as I find google drive perfect if I want to go onto my desktop and continue working on my file. And yes I love the windows OS as well, and the easy workaround with that is just starting up the Boot Camp application that comes pre installed with any MacBook and you can instantly start using windows on your Macbook. I see no problem working with this, and graphical fidelity is obviously not a reason why you should buy this. This is a workstation laptop, not a gaming laptop or computer, and is meant to help your workflow, and not with your leisure time. I love this laptop

    The thing I like most about my Mac, is that I bought it in 2012 refurbished for around $1100. Since then it's seen an SSD upgrade and a RAM upgrade, an it's still faster than most of the computers at my work, not to mention it's battery life is stellar. My friend also has a unibody MacBook that had it's battery expand inside the laptop, bulging out the touchpad and the bottom of the case. Took it out and replaced it and everything worked fine.

    For me, the MacBook is nice because of two things: build quality and macOS. I can not like Windows, and I just don't know why. I use Windows for all the programs on the job, schools and even games (actually just Pro Evolution Soccer), but for personal things like browsing, writing texts, Netflix, developing web sites and even games like League of Legends, Hearthstone and StarCraft, macOS handle everything very well and I fell better than using Windows.
    I tried some versions of Linux, and I really liked it, but since I like Apples's hardware, I will use it's system.

      @@kelvinlendof553 Yes but apple isn't made for gamers. It doesn't target that audience, it never has. • @yareddeyaso1219
      @yareddeyaso1219 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kb-fp5vf I'm not sure what his thought process was when he said that but I think what he meant to say was that any laptop that costs that much should have performance that should match that price and not make up for it via build quality and other features that don't necessarily affect the performance of that device. I don't believe this is true and a company should be allowed to charge a premium if they invested more money, time, thought and manpower into other features of their devices which apple clearly does regardless of what anyone thinks. As for being creative though, yeah Mac users don't buy Macs for gaming and it is mostly for productivity or for casual usage. That being said though, these workloads are completely possible on the windows/Linux side of things and furthermore those two OS families have other features to offer and in the end whenever all these OS are compared, windows/Linus OS are usually found lacking in only a few workload comparisons with MacOS but are never found to be unable to do it altogether and because of that I think it is still worth pointing out that the MacOS ecosystem is great at a lot of things especially integration with other devices but severely limiting at a FEW other tasks as well.

    Nice review. I would add a couple of things. 1-With Parallels or WMWare you really run virtual windows machines that are fast, reliable even better than being on windows (besides gaming). One gets messy? Drop a copy or revert to snapshot. 2-MacOS is amazing. 3-2nd hand value? You'd be surprised how well Macs hold their value in time. If you buy them well (10% discount is easy to find) after a couple of years that machine's value is around 70% of what you paid. 4-Ridiculously reliable, with amazing customer care (Apple Store and more). 5-Expensive? TCO it's good entry price they're very much so.

    Really good and fair review. I’m confused by one of your last statement, though: “the operating system is limiting, for some”. Just curious what you’re thinking of. As a Unix/Linux guy I feel completely crippled on a Windows machine, specifically because *nix isn’t under the covers. What is MacOS missing? Is it the games/apps people want to run? If so, that makes sense. Is it something else?
    I like your point re the build quality. I’ve realized over my many years that most people don’t care how crappy something feels in use, or how inelegant it looks. I care a lot, and am willing to pay (a lot) more for not-a-hunk-of-plastic.

    My two cents from a guy who basically used all of them . I grew up on a MacBook 2008 that took me through my entire high school , back then I used to Mac os and windows.
    I built my first PC and was using Windows 7 at the time I think solely and just used that for games.
    I went to uni and did my degree in cs and I basically played around with Linux to the poijnt where , things made sense , by the end of uni , I can't use anything else to write code except for any Linux distro with i3 gaps ported.
    Now I own a hp zbook , for my job and I love except it's super heavy . And 2 PC's 1 gaming , 1 for the family and 1 server.
    What I really want , is Mac hardware and like complete Linux support. I think lots of people really love to bash on Mac os , and I personally think the os is actually pretty good you know . Windows is too much of a clutter fest for me to like use besides playing games, especially for development , you need to jump through 400 hoops to get something working.
    People keep forgetting , apple can charge anything they want because they have a monopoly on devices running the Mac / iOS ecosystem , since they own it .

    I bought the 13 inch MBP w/o touch bar a couple days ago. I bought the 2.3GHz with 256GB SSD drive. The retail price was $1499 but I purchased it for $1249(no tax) at the Navy exchange. Everything there is tax free and it was on sale for military members😀. One of the perks of being in the military. I don't do any video editing or gaming for that matter, but I had a 17inch touch screen acer laptop that I was using for about 5 years only for school and decided to finally upgrade to my very first apple computer. I am apple everything, iPhone 7, Apple Watch, so why not? I am fairly impressed with this system. Very crisp display and the SSD make it super fast for it to open programs and what not. I could have bought the 3.1GHz MBP with touch bar for $1500 but I didn't see that much of a difference to spend that extra $250. Overall, fairly impressed.

I was so excited because I liked Apple back then and then I slowly started to hate macOS, because it was hard to use keyboard shortcuts. A lot of hacks were only for windows too so I hated it. @kevinconnolly3972 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      George Gear Makes no difference mate, import tariffs will affect whether we're in the EU or not. In fact things will be even shitter when we leave since Brexit will mean no free trade with the EU meaning more FUCKING tariffs.

    • @georgegear6823
      @georgegear6823 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kevin Connolly yeah if you wanna buy a merc or a Hugo boss suit. But a MacBook won’t because it doesn’t get made or shipped through the EU meaning we won’t be seeing a guaranteed rise in price in the future unlike poor Austria who are having these sort of decisions on import tariffs made for them. And it’s not like this guy can vote for a new politician who will change this, because EU politicians aren’t elected so they’re effectively stuffed

    • @kevinconnolly3972
      @kevinconnolly3972 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      George Gear Apple products get made in China. The EU is China's biggest trading partner. If we leave the EU this trade agreement will no longer exist. China would prioritise a trade agreement with the EU over Britain as everything we can offer in terms of exports the EU can offer 10x better and cheaper. This is because the falling pound means manufacturers based in the UK have to pay more to import foreign goods like raw materials, so thus to cut losses must charge more to export their finished products. This all leads to increased inflation which results in the value (price in this case) of products we buy rising and the money we use to buy them with not. This is why consumer based products like those from Apple are so expensive at the moment. I'm afraid to say that the uncertainty around Brexit is pretty much the root cause of all of this as foreign investors (which we rely on) move away deciding to save and invest elsewhere. This causes the pound to dip even further which only exacerbates the issues mentioned above whilst also increasing the liklihood of a recession which would negatively impact employment and total average income. The two main reasons why Apple products are cheaper in the USA is due to non-existent or low VAT in some states as well as Apple themselves pricing their electronics cheaper there. America's population is alot bigger than ours as well so VAT can afford to be much lower. The UK on the other hand benefits extensively from imposing VAT on its products which is why when we leave the EU, despite what Theresa May might say, I expect VAT to further rise to partly offset any financial damages Brexit might cause to the economy. This will again lead to things being more expensive to buy than if we had stayed in the EU. 😉

    owning both, I can say the Huawei matebook x is on par with the macobook in terms of build quality. it comes in at 1100 bucks, but the microsoft store has it for 899. either way it's a cheaper alternative running windows which I personally prefer.

    I got a base model 2018 MacBook Pro a few days ago. I'm a graphic designer, and even though I have a very powerful desktop PC, I needed a portable computer to take to work and client meetings. It's great! It allows me to do really responsive 2D editing with Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Lightroom. Don't get me wrong - I wouldn't work with massive raster images on it, but it's really worth the £1200 I paid for it for the power, portability and amazing user experience

    I bought MacBook 15” pro 2012 I like it with CD drive in it, but it’s heavy to travel around. I also have iPad Pro 9.7 inch bought from 2017. I travel every year for fun and start blogging, videos and I am thinking buying MacBook Air to travel and editing laptop.
    What can you suggest Greg? MacBook Air? Or MacBook Pro 2019?

    Reasons why I would never buy a Macbook:
    1- Price.
    2- OS: Most of the engineering programs I use do not have full compatibility with MacOS.
    3- Horrible port selection > Must add a price premium for good dongles > Price.
    4- Everything is soldered.
    5- Underperforming GPU (if it exists) compared to similarly prices (or cheaper) Windows laptops.

      Zakaria Youncha -
      1. You'll be hard pushed to find a Windows alternative with the same or better specification for much less.
      2. Thats fair enough, although Bootcamp does exist.
      3. A price premium? A dongle costs about $5, a usb hub cost me less than $20. On a $1,000+ purchase?
      4. Fair enough
      5. Eh? The GPU, which is a higher spec than competing laptops from Dell etc, performs fine for me and I develop games on it!

      A lot of people basically "live" in the cloud now anyways. Honestly I only use this for school work and I store all of my documents on OneDrive. So I really don't have the need for that much storage. I understand that other people might though.

      I personally have 512GB on mine, and would never buy anything lower than 256, but I can definitely see how 128GB would be enough for some people, especially if they use it as a secondary device to a desktop.
