      I came up with 8 on my own but 8 doesn’t sound like a good number so I had to look online to help me with the last two. 😂

      Aaron Moses , same here. Not using for that long, but did think the same thing before video starts. Awesome tips. Specially liked the shortcut one.

    @Snazzy Labs, pin this 😊
    00:21 *Tip #1* Mass edit filenames in finder and it's super handy
    01:41 *Tip #2* Move the volume slider in increments of one quarter this is awesome for slight micro adjustments or just barely
    02:03 *Tip #3* You can, actually hold, down the command key as you drag the background window
    02:15 *Tip #4* Snapping functions built into recent versions of windows and mac os just seems behind in that regard now. Yes there are applications
    03:06 *Tip #5* Bar comes up and it defines the word that you've selected it'll will look for it on wikipedia etc.
    03:59 *Tip #6* Screen share your screen
    05:14 *Tip #7* Re-arrange the menu icons
    05:44 *Tip #8* Customize your tool bar in the finder window
    06:54 *Tip #9* Create shortcuts for applications that don’t have the one you want
    08:24 *Tip #10* icloud keychain access saves every wi-fi network password you've ever logged into on any of your devices

      I disagree. The previous videos on mac tricks were definitely worth watching, this video here shows the most basic stuff like "Hold Command to do X" or "Did you know app X is a thing". This video might be addressed towards casual users but as a power user, you should have known all these tricks to be honest. I mean, #4 was basically a huge feature in the macOS keynote a few years ago, why is it a trick now to know about it? Not trying to sound snarky, I'm just confused about the tricks being so much more obvious all of a sudden.

  • @smokeduv
    @smokeduv 6 ปีที่แล้ว +259

    The 2nd tip for small increments in volume also works for the screen brightness (F1/F2) and for the keyboard backlight (F5/F6)

    • @snazzy
      @snazzy  6 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Indeed! Forgot this. Nice tip!

    • @smokeduv
      @smokeduv 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Not as useful as the volume, though. Also, for the 4th tip, if you have a window already in full screen mode and you want another one in the desktop to be in dual view for the other one, you can enter mission control and drag that windows, place it onto the full screen window you want, wait for a second and it merges them in one full screen thing. I use this 3rd tip all the time! Great videos!!!

    To get the popup without force touch, if you're on a laptop or have a Magic Trackpad (non-force touch) you can tap with 3 fingers on the word, and it brings it right up. No keys required!

    Thanks for the video, perfect for a newbie MacBook user like me.
    Just wanted to make it easier to browse through the video, so here is a list of all the tips:
    Tip 1 - 0:18 - Mass edit file names
    Tip 2 - 1:26 - Change volume in small increments
    Tip 3 - 1:52 - Drag a window in the background
    Tip 4 - 2:13 - Window snapping
    Tip 5 - 3:07 - Popup bar for words (instead of using force touch)
    Tip 6 - 3:53 - Screen Sharing (like TeamViewer but for Mac)
    Tip 7 - 5:06 - Edit the menu bar
    Tip 8 - 5:46 - Drag files and folders to the toolbar
    Tip 9 - 6:54 - Create your own shortcuts
    Tip 10 - 8:21 - Find your passwords using Keychain

      You can cut and paste items*! Just copy whatever you want to ‘cut’ and then use CMD+Alt+V and there you go! It’ll ‘cut and paste’ in the desired location .
      *It is actually called “move”, buuut ... we are more accustomed to hear the former expression.

    • @samgerers
      @samgerers 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      For cut and paste in Word or Firefox I use extra keys on my mouse. Gaming mice are really handy for productive use, as you usually don't use your right thumb, but with a gaming mouse there are buttons which you can bind to anything (at least with the Razer Synapse software).

    #9 is literally why I'm now a macOS user. Bought an Air way back for using with Linux, but there were quirks that had me waiting for a version that would actually install on my machine. In the meantime, I had to make do with macOS, and I did what I could to make it "not suck." I slowly discovered that while macOS at first seems like a "one size fits all" kinda deal, it's also incredibly customizable - in many ways much more so than Linux. The keyboard shortcuts thing is amazing, and I love how colleagues are incredibly frustrated trying to use my computer because nothing is what they expect, everything is customized to my particular liking, all the way down to modifier keys for navigating text.

    That dictionary lookup shortcut is amazing. I'm studying a university degree in my second language, so being able to quickly look up a word in the text I'm reading without changing apps and breaking my concentration is a godsend. I've also been looking for how to one-touch shutdown or restart ever since I switched over from Linux, so that was a great tip for me too! In fact, 6 or 7 of these are going to serve me and help improve my workflow.

    Really cool. Most tricks videos out there are all about things everyone already knows. I did not know any of the tricks you presented here. Just 1 thing, tip 5: You can have force touch with a Magic Trackpad, AND, you can also set a regular trackpad to use triple finger "tap" or click to bring up the dictionary, Wikipedia, etc. I always prefer gestures to keyboard shortcuts. So I thought I'd leave this here.
    Thanks for the video. Very nice. Best, Raphael

      @@matthewraven95 My sentiments exactly. Dashlane (free version) was my first password manager and gave me constant headaches with boggled login info, lost passwords and a constant shoving match with Chrome's password saver, right up until it flat out quit functioning on me.
      I've used LastPass free for a year now and my one complaint (more of a nitpick) is that the mobile app is kinda inconvenient.

    I thought I'd know the tips and that I’d waste ten minutes, but I actually learned a few things that surprised me! (3, 4, 6) Here are the tips for other people like me that feel the need to hurry through:
    1. Batch rename files
    2. Hold Shift+Option when you adjust brightness/volume for fine increments
    3. Cmd+drag background window will move it without making it active!
    4. Window snapping - click+hold on the green full screen button on the top left of the window
    5. Define words with force touch (I personally have it set up to tap with three fingers)
    6. There’s a Screen Sharing app in MacOS, you can send a request to an apple id to see and control their desktop!
    7. Cmd+drag status bar icons to rearrange, you can drag down to remove them. Some app icons need to be disabled from their app.
    8. You can drag files and folders into the Finder toolbar. You can put an app there, drag a file to its icon to open in the app. (the app tip is nifty, I had only put folders there, as sometimes my favorites would disappear from the sidebar and I would have a hard time reaching most used folders)
    9. You can create new app-specific keyboard shortcuts in System Preferences -> Keyboard -> App Shortcuts
    10. iCloud Keychain Access saves any wifi network password you’ve used, you can copy it from the app after you authenticate as an admin.

    Tip #5 is called "Look Up" and you don't have to and force touch or remember shortcut keys. It's available on any Mac. Just control click on the word and select the top menu item 'Look Up". You can use a two finger click using a trackpad if you have the secondary click with two fingers option enabled in settings/trackpad/point and click
    The other one about screen sharing can also be accessed from messages. In messages start or open a message with the person you want to share screens with and open the "Details" tab in upper right corner. Screen sharing is the first icon next to their name and looks like two computer screens. Using messages is nice because you don't have to remember their Apple ID and also can send them an alert to see if they are available and ready to accept the screen share.

      Nothing with Apple is "free". You already pay more for the same hardware specs, or worse, and 3-5 times that for any repairs. Moreover, Apple rigs its products so you have to take any product to them. So they can keep charging you 3-5 times the rate a 3rd party repair shop would charge you.

    • @techbysteff4829

      @@borlach321 I'm still using a MacbookPro 13" from mid 2010 that I've upgraded the RAM, HDD to SDD and updated the OS to current on, all myself, from following online tutorials or just educating myself on how things work. Also, I haven't paid for a single app outside of add-ons for Presonus Studio One, since I first got the thing, because my little brother taught me a long, long time ago:
      It's the internet, dude.
      There will ALWAYS be someone who figured shit out and 3 more who took that idea and came up with an even better way, and there will ALWAYS be a free, open source alternative to whatever software you might need.
      The kids at the Genius Store told me, since the release of El Capitan, that none of these upgrades were possible, because they bought into the same myths that you've bought into. Mac's not locked down, so much as it is, kept safe for you until you halfway know what you're doing.

      And the second... When wearing headphones on my Mac mini, I have to keep volume of TH-cam videos at around 20%, because even the first step in loudness is too loud. Because of that I couldn't use the volume control on the keyboard, which would be super useful

    Whilst perhaps not as cool as the Windows snap version (not that I'd know), 'tip 4' how to snap a window to have 2 files in clear and even view - and be fully editable is brilliant - and I feel like a goose for not knowing that! I am constantly 'Command Tabbing' to switch from one file to another - but now I don't have to... Awesome! Great Stuff!

    Tip No 9 was incredibly useful. I've just done it to OneNote where a shortcut key to center align text was not available by default where as Align Left or Right where. I had to work out how to make it work for a nested menu item, which if anyone is wondering was resolved by entering the Menu Title as follows: Format->Alignment->Center

    Tip no 5, instead of pressing CTL+CMD+D, you can select the word and right-click on it to get the same result. Thanks for tips no 1 and especially no 10. I don't know why after all these years on a Mac, I never thought of right-clicking on an item in Keychain Access. Pretty handy.
