South Africa's Covid Storm - BBC Africa Eye documentary

  • South Africa has the highest number of Covid-19 cases in Africa. The backbone of the country’s response were community health workers with a mission to test and identify the infected.
Predominately women, these front line workers were tasked with navigating the stark inequalities of South Africa to test those in some of the richest neighbourhoods on the continent and also people living in some of it’s densest townships, where social distancing is impossible.
Filmed over six months, BBC Africa Eye follows Tshego, a nurse and mother from the Alexandra Township in Johannesburg, fighting a virus that brought her face to face with stigma, poverty and corruption.

This has too much fear mongering and lacks substance. People need food, service delivery and jobs not testing for a disease that has only 0.035% deaths to its name in our country. We normally see HIV Aids, Diabetes, TB and Cancer bearing higher numbers that and we are yet to see vaccinations for those. COVID19 is actually a joke to most Africans whom aren't the middle and upperclass.

They don't want to acknowledge that Africa as a whole has done relatively much better than the rest of the world and if our leaders were more Afro centric in their approach rather than toe their "masters" line at least here in Mzantsi we could have done much better. BBC we are a different breed of Africans and your stereotypical third world narrative doesn't stick anymore. Where is the "storm"?. You were forced to apologise few months ago for associating slums and poverty with COVID-19 but your visuals here are still perpetuating the same line. Why didn't you show that in South Africa the COVID-19 hotpots were the so called affluent areas?

That's a shame mahn. If that happened in S.A we would relentlessly be on the government case. And testing is free in S.A.
Sad, they are opportunists. The one thing that happened here is they tried inflating sanitizer and surgical masks prices and some people got arrested that was a few months back.

I think those that are angered by the BBC coverage of the impact of COVID-19 in low income areas in SA are missing the point. As l watched this report l felt as if the BBC was actually balanced and some parts of the response was even showing how SA was handling the situation better than even the States.
    What do l mean?
    1. Prompt response by the government (even deploying the army...by contrast the States response was arguably laissez-faire in some regards)
    2. The people themselves were compliant than some Americans who were citing the right to the freedom of not wearing masks.
Just two things l noted off top. And yes, this report also exposed the poverty stricken population of SA. But this is the reality of Africa. The swanky Suburbs of Sandton will not be as affected as Alex would be, so BBC wouldn’t be out there covering how Covid is affecting the rich.
Let’s be objective in our criticisms as Africans. We have a beautiful continent and we will be better in due time...for now let’s continue bettering ourselves and supporting each other.

As for the rest, I agree that it was blown out of proportion. I still haven't met a single person infected by this thing, let alone somebody who has died.

Well, we're in our second wave of covid in s.a.
When level 1 started, some of the provinces went back to their old ways.people ignored the virus and more and more people got infected
I drove through transkei and the rest of the eastern cape 2 weeks back.
People slept in front of the post offices and atm's at night.
To get their Grant's in time on the 25th of November.
During the day it was a horrible face to see how they ignored social distances. They just did not care.
And now we are going back to where it all started
On Durbans beaches they just did not give a f..k about social distances or wearing masks.
