I genuinely adore this series. It started off really unpolished, but as the series progressed John really came into his own. The only major complaint I have is that some parts of the worldbuilding are just really hard to suspend disbelief about when you actually think about it. The Cold Minds being a prime example. In my opinion, I think it would have made far more sense if they were only a localized threat, not a universal one. Not least of which being because the amount of energy they should actually need to simulate their host civilization is orders of magnitude less than an entire universe worth. A single star would be more than sufficient.
