Hands down, Scrappy Survivors has been the best precon I've ever purchased. I mean, not just because it's Dogmeat, but the junk tokens are so freaking awesome!!
@@eebbaa5560 They are essentially the same deck, dimir zombies, Grave danger better to deck due to price, just get Wilhelt as a single(upgrade) and run him as the commander since he much better then gisa and geralf
Ellivere "virtue and valor" has been a freaking BANGER. it was pretty easy to upgrade, just getting better enchantments, get a few white staples like light paws makes her sing.
Tribal decks always appeal to new players because the synergy is so clear and flavorful. But I feel non-tribal themes are just easier to upgrade regularly. There are just more Graveyard synergies than merfolk. So I recommend the MKM Dimir reanimator/ surveil deck.
I cannot agree with this sentiment more. I started with Mono-Red Goblins and had so much fun with our boy Krenko, Mob Boss that I just couldn't stop doubling them.
It's not just easier but it makes players have to consider a lot more magic aspects when playing commander: While tribal cards are often a boon for new players, they can also be a crutch: once you're used to just creature synergies you do not have to look as much as things like mana costs and henceforth you don't have to look as much at the mana curve and the mana base. I would argue that the same inherent acceleration having a strong tribe deck makes players that would go from new to experience to not get used to run proper levels of interaction. That's why I'd like to see more harder-to-run (So to speak) tactics on precons like spell slinging or control: that way the transition from casual playing to more high powered or even competitive EDH woudln't be as pronounced once you don't have the benefit of tribal payoffs and have to look at actually searching for cards that overall more playable instead of the usual 'This is expensive but it works cause of tribal synergy'
I feel so validated that three of my favorite precons (Leinore, Jirina, and Millicent) all made your list. And i still have all of them in my regular rotation!
The Hakbal Merfolk precon is easily my favorite and what I consider to be a really good precon to get. I only added like 4 cards before a commander night a the LGS, didn't even draw any of my upgrade pieces but the deck operates so synergisticly
I think its almost one of the best precons. It has consistent and big card draw. Solid ramp with the commander and gives a ton of stats with so much opportunities to swing with unblockable creatures. The most powerful combo in the deck is deeproot waters with Reflections of Littjara.
My first precon deck is Ruthless Regiment in 2020. It was a good deck but not the overpower deck, but the +2/+0 really made the deck more aggressive, and the only problem was the card draw and mana before upgrading. Everyone asked me to use Ceaser, but I like the human tribal deck, and Jirina Kudro ability is fit and nice. Some cards are very nice, like the Calvary that chooses the creature type, then humans you control will have protection from chosen creatures, and it is really good when facing tribal deck. I love Jirina Kudro as my commander. It's good to see the deck on the list.
I don’t think moxfield takes the price of basic lands into account, when doing my recent 100 dollar budget deck I removed all the basics because it was saying they were worth 35 cents a piece and I didn’t want to count those towards the price but the total deck price stat stayed the same afterwards
@@NitpickingNerds Verified and stand corrected. Thanks for noticing that. I aw the "$8.75 listing for the 25 basics in the Vampiric Bloodline precon, but at the top in the category of lands, it lists $6.76 for the value of that category, which suggests it's omitting the value of basic lands (though it still counts everything else at a minimum of $0.35, as @canaantravis has noted.)
I just bought the Hail Ceasar Fallout deck yesterday, and it's been a ton of fun playing with it. I might swap in Isshin as the commander and add in a couple of upgrades since doubling all those attack triggers sounds really fun.
I like the oops all Grave Titan Precon the most. It features such great cards as Grave Titan, and Grave Titan! I heard it's Nitpicking Nerd's favorite card and an auto include in every deck!

When you recommended taking out windfall from Stella Lee, I laughed a bit. I just bought the precon and played a few games this weekend. I managed take out a player by casting 3 copies of windfall while they had 11 cards in hand. that card has now cemented itself as a staple for me. I lost quickly after that lol but it was a great game. Deck out by mega draw is a fun way to go
It also combos quite nicely with Pyretic Charge as a wincon in non-infinite versions of Stella. Windfall into Pyretic Charge often boosts your team by +9 or +10 power or more
I ended up buying the chaos incarnate pre con when i got into MTG. All my friends hated me because i was using goad. i then upgraded it wondering how annoying i could be. It later turned into a Thantis fog deck which got me targeting first every game. i realized the error of what i did. so i did the responsible thing, i took out my wallet, went to my LGS and i turned the entire deck into a Korvold Aristocrats deck, Cant target me if you're dead ! lmao
Can confirm about the value on the Millicent and Stella Lee decks. My friend bought the Leinore deck and threw Khatilda from the main set in the command zone. The deck worked fine that way and gets cool new additions in lots of sets. Millicent is great, you can just do a search for spirits and most of the good ones you’d add are very cheap. Like Beezy said, $15 worth of upgrades plus the stuff in your binder will do a ton.
I got the spirit deck a bit ago, always a black player since I like spooky stuff and spirits was my way out of black while stay spooky. been looking for a good spirit comander for years so finally bought the deck and wow it does wonders, some small upgrades and it gets out of control so fast i love it.
The same is true for the dragon precon with atarka, and others like the dinosaur or merfolk one. I think it's because some precons are harder to get or too expensive. So they give precons that are playable and cheap
I won my last 2 games with the Stella Lee deck with some insane turns - Propaganda and Epic Experiment actually played a big part in those wins too! Propaganda is great if you draw it in the early game.
Dude, I look down at my 2 standard commander decks I own and I see one of these 2 decks are the 5th spirit deck. I'm glad to know I've been sitting on a good deck all these years.
I’m building a River Song deck and there is a lot of overlap with the Stella Lee deck. I like the idea of casting spells from the top and bottom of my deck, and from exile.😂
I wanna add that for the ruthless regiment deck, the sub-commanders from the deck, Trynn and Silvar, are maybe my favorite partner pairing in commander and they can effortlessly swap in as your commanders without almost any changes being made to the deck
Someone randomly came up to me at my LGS and offered to trade one booster pack of Commander Masters for the whole UW Spirit precon. I was like, "sure?" Best trade I've ever made.
Any lost caverns deck is great tbh. Merfolk is best out of the box and is the strongest of the four in my opinion. Super easy for new players too once you know what explore does
Ruthless Regiment can be turned into a flexible powerhouse if you switch to Trynn/Silvar as the commanders. You can go tall with Silvar, wide with humans, or aristocrats if combat doesn't work. I only took the deck apart because I wanted to experiment with other orzhov commanders and needed the pieces.
The ixalan merfolk pre con is probably the strongest "cheap" pre con you can get. Its very strong and simple to play. Snowballs out of control very fast. all you have to do to upgrade it is to put 2-4 counter spells in it for the card you dont like
