I can attest to that. I never really liked the Night Lords much until I read this trilogy and the Prince of Crows (Sevatar is also a very likeable character)
Having read Devastation of Baal as one of my first 40 k books I was massively disappointed and thought that I wasn't going to get any enjoyment out of this universe when I got recommended ADB as a writer. 3 books later I have become an absolute fan of his work and that of Dan Abnett.
I love how they scavenge most of their armour and supplies, more traitors need to be written like that. I was thinking of doing a Night Lord kill team with mixed chaos and imperial bits to show that off. Night Lords steal more stuff than the Blood Ravens

Its why I like Honsou. Hes made from Imperial Fist gene seed. And the Siege of Hydra Cordatus where the iron warriors seized a fuck load (accurate measurement) of imperial fists gene seed, and uses CAPTURED guardsmen with broken lasguns to charge over a minefield, to clear it, and expose the Fists positions. Class act.
I personally really enjoy the idea of a traitor legion that hasn’t fallen to chaos and isn’t worshiping deamons but just have their own point of view. The night lords are already super badass and I believe that the fact they rejected powerful allies and powers makes them all the more terrifying
Don't be fooled, they fall to chaos. They don't worship it, they despise it, and they are all convinced they are mostly uncorrupted. Wich is not true, obviously. They are all soiled in some way. Even Konrad was, in the end.
If it wasn't for their over the top random killings I would like them. I do like the idea of those like Talos. Cruelty with purpose. Hating the Imperium for the hypocrisy. Same reason I like the Sons, and Alpha Legion. Well those with lore that don't make them cartoon evil caricatures. One for knowledge and the other for ? I like Renegade legions too. Ones that aren't corrupted.
The Night Lords trilogy is easily some of the best writing for 40k, and Talos is such a great character. Someone who is willing to easily butcher an entire planet but still able to drop quotes like “I wanted to be a hero. Look how that turned out…”.

"The Exalted" Vandred's redemption to his Night Lord brethren was one of the most profound moments in the trilogy to me. It was awesome to see Vandred unshackle himself from the crawlings of chaos and take his flagship into the center of the fight. Knowing full well he would die and would take the demon within with him.
Talos is an interesting, complicated and thoroughly badass character (I particularly liked his speech) but I think in the end Vandred was probably the 3rd biggest badass of 10th company beating him there with his final moments and last words. spots one and two for me personally have to go to malcharion for killing a blood angel champion twice and lucoryphus (both for being the only night lord to survive the entire fight on tsagualsa and for being the first on the wall in the heresy)
Night Lords and Iron Warriors are my favourite traitor legions, using Chaos when they need/want it but not being extremely stupid about it. Also he has a good way of killing a Phoenix Lord, no bullshit, she was the Predator and he was Arnold, more Eldar losses should be like this
It almost seems like every time the eldar try to step in to "avert some future crisis" or "kill some future threat" they just end up being the reason that it even happened?(angron for example)
There are a lot of stories that by trying to avert the profecy, you fulfil it (eg. The Greek tragedy where a dude accidentaly kills his dad and screws his mom)

Maybe politics of Chaos. Like there are commander better than Abaddon but they are biased towards one god. Maybe if TTS continued, they might explore Abaddon (like he is seen as loser, but turned out that he is smarter than he seems. At least playing off rivalry to keep his position, maybe convincing rival officers to turn on one that would usurp him.

Talos and Sevitar are both night lords characters that I wish we got more of due to them being interesting, complex characters. Hopefully GW gives us a Sevitar book seeing as his story isn't over yet (though unfortunately GW likes to keep the Loyal chapters with traitor geneseed's founding mysterious)
I mean the night lord trilogy by Aaron dempski Bowden is basically the story of Talos from start to tragic finish. But ye Sevitar would make some great books.
The Talos trilogy was my first introduction to the Night Lords so it really confused me when I found out a lot of people think they're one of the worst legions
People tend to confuse "good" with "admirable". The Night Lords are very good in that they are very interesting, diverse of thought, and layered. They are not "admirable" in that they tend to be absolute monsters in general. Kinda Like Curze himself; not at all an admirable person, but a very interesting one to read about.
ADB is a goat with his Night Lords trilogy, "The Emperor's gift", "Betrayer" and "First Heretic". I mean, creating such badass characters like Talos, Argel Tal, Lothara Sarrin, Hyperion etc is good enough, but small details everynow and then is just UHHH SO GOOD.
To think that some (very small amount of) people think that ADB writes Imperials as dumb shit-heads. I'd place him just below Dan Abnett (my absolute favorite) in terms of quality writing. ;/

One badass thing I wish you mentioned... The new NL bearing his geneseed, called Decimus. Is the aforementioned baby of Octavia and Septimus. They actually named their child somewhat in honor of Talos
There’s some dispute over that. Whether he’s called Decimus because First Claw was the last of the 10th Company or if he genuinely is the son of Coreth and Eurydice. Talos specifically helped them escape to Imperial custody. On top of that a child of a navigator might also be too genetically unstable to support geneseed.
You forgot to mention that the nightlord who got talos’ gene seed was the child of the servants that banged why he has the literally 3rd eye of a navigator
That dude having seggs with the girl on Talos's ship is for me the true gigachad of the story. Like imagine having a 2,30 m tall, hundreds of years old killing machine tell you to not do it or else but still going after and getting that touchdown, is one of the most impressive display of manhood ever written.
Yeah, he was wild but actually comical as well. I love that little moment when First Claw is fleeing the exploding ship and Uzas stops to pick up more skulls for the skull thrones and Talos jams a bolter to his head and hisses 'LEAVE. THE DAMN. SKULLS'.
My favorite was when they were attempting to stop the dreadnought revival. "Talos" "Brother?" "What was the name of your dog?" Just seconds after a huge explosion and minutes after that conversation passed, when Uzaz wasn't even part of it.
Well his Black Legion series made me actually like Abaddon (when he met up with Khayon without his full armour on) for a while so that's saying something!
The Night Lords omnibus are honestly my favorite books of all time. So incredibly well written and just filled with awesome character arcs by the entire cast, with some pretty heavy plot twists (especially towards the end there). Great video, casting light on these great books!
You forgot to mention Decimus inherited his gene-sire's memories and its obvious that Talos personality is a major factor in Decimus, as Decimus wears his armour in almost the exact same way as Talos did, with the only addition the winged helm. (I don't count skull trophies and flesh capes as differences, as that's just the way NLs operate when they have time.)
Well, If we're being particular his war gear is basically a tribute to all the fallen members of first claw with I believe a helmet similar to xarl's, a cape like uzas and a few other things from mercution and cyrion. I suspect he possesses a good chunk of Talos's memories and tries to honour those who followed the old way which Talos preached rather than just running from conflict whenever it got remotely fair. The other interesting possibility is that he either learned about them from lucoryphus, variel and the atramentar who followed him or from Octavia and Septimus who showed a certain level of respect for first claw (as shown by her saying Xarl was a good man) and are speculated to be the parents of Decimus (Maruc was the 9th servant of Talos so it's possible either they named their son Decimus in memory of Talos or Variel gave him the name when he implanted the geneseed).
That Night Lords omnibus is honestly one of the literary highpoints of 40k, it manages to explore a few things unexplored about astartes psychology and development through Talos’s flashbacks. Also the series has a high amount of human perspectives to showcase how absolutely daunting it is to even face a Night Lords squad, regardless of if you’re hundreds of humans on a ship, or even several squads of well battle worn Astartes. While his First Claw squad are centuries battle traine it can show how Night Lords, despite being underdogs when fighting most other Astartes legions, can still scrape wins by using every dirty tactic in the book. In a universe where everything is super lethal at a mass rate, traditional in a sense the night lords horrific tactics come across as logistical shortcutting lol Make no mistake they are evil asf tho and the book does not shy away from that.

I really hope some writers one day develop or create the lore of more loyalist chapter from traitor legions. I think they are more interesting than the heroic blue boys and a loyalist Night Lord chapter would be cool as hell
Space Sharks might be Night Lords. Blood Ravens might be Thousand Sons. Exorcists might be Word Bearers. Soul Drinkers could be Emperors Children. The Space Sharks novel is kinda mid but I liked how they described the Webway. Their founder gave them some kind of dark glass. Was it Konrad? Was it some unknown Space Marine? Nobody knows.

I would like if the Imperium authorized the creation of chapters from the traitor legions, and just to add insult to injury, name them in a way that references the fall of the traitors or the previous names of the legions. Night Lords = Angels of Nostramo World Eaters = Warhounds Death Guard = Dusk Raiders Emperor's Children: Noble Phoenissians Thousand Sons: Red Seers (should be bound to The Emperor like Astropaths are to protect them from the fleshchange) Alpha Legion: Omega Hydras Iron Warriors: Unbreaking Olympians I cant really come up with something for the Luna Wolves/Sons of Horus and I think Word Bearer chapter would be a bad idea (still: Faithful Harbingers)
@@Robahomusic Space Sharks are the Terran elements of the Raven Guard; that's been confirmed in all but the most explicit of ways. Their founder was Shade Lord Arkhas Fal. There may be some droplets of traitor gene-seed in there, but that's all.
There is also the fact that he had a conversation with a traitor marine that basically revealed how fucked the concept of time is in the Warp and he basically didn't bat an eye when he explained how he viewed his own perception of time in the Warp
This deep dive into the character is really badass and a lot of fun I also appreciate that it's a nightlord video something I've come not to expect a whole lot

The Palatine Blade guy in the White Scars book, Path of Heaven, is also rather compelling. Skillful, determined, and kind of embodying the flawed but still acceptable Emperor's Children pre-Heresy. Cool end as well.

Reading the NL trilogy is what made me play Night Lords, and I've literally never had any real desire to play another faction. I started in 2011, although I absolutely have not been playing the whole time. Still, even now I adore their aesthetics and premise more than anything else.

Back in a day I was lucky to start reading 40k books from this Night Lord's trilogy. After that I thought that all Traitor Astartes have good written and interesting characters. Damm I was wrong :( Anyway, thank you Majorkill for reminding about Talos
10/10 can confirm Talos is a real one, got the Night Lords omnibus for my birthday and read it cover to cover in 2 days. Easily my favorite traitor legion and damn near my favorite legion as a whole.

Don't forget the shit he did to fuck with the imperium. Talos came up w the idea to excruciate (their top tier form of torture) all the best psychers at seguelsa, and then finish them off with his navigators eye. All to transmit a psychic wave that fucked up hundreds of neighboring planets and warp space. Talos basically used a reversed version of the sacrifices to keep the god emperor alive 😈
The nightlords trilogy is easily my favourite piece of 40k fiction. Adb masterfully manages to spin the story around these murderers and traitors, that you almost sympathise with them and immediately hits you with a nugget of their absolute evil. Remember, just because you can construct a justification for your evil deeds does not make them less evil…. Great writing!
The Night Lords were really a mixed bag. Totally psychotic, while being very level headed. They don't even use Chaos for most of them since it'd just be another master to rule over them. They just scavenge and act more as pirates than submit to Chaos. And pirates are more interesting than Khorne Berserkers or Plague Marines. I may not like the Night Lords, but I will acknowledge that they have some of the best lore of all Legions, loyalist and traitor alike.
I just very recently finished this and have been waiting to watch this video and the other Night Lords video because I was reading this. Talos was such a awesome intro into the books of 40k, I know there are hundreds and starting is probably better in 30k, but I've always been a Chaos fan and Talos was I think the perfect intro for me. He's such a cool character that I had come to love, because of his hidden nobility deep down under his rampant evilness, I loved seeing the two sides mix into the dark nobility that is what the Night Lords could have been.
hopefully the new night lord leader will be able to untie the night lords and are able to be redeem and join the emperor once more but are treated better then before
Unapologetic Eldar simp here, and say what you will about how much the writers hate them, but the imagery of Jain Zarr striding like a horror movie creature *through* members of "the horror Legion", only taken out by dramatic self-destruction at the very end, makes for a *hell* of a scene.
Talos wasnt a hardcore criminal? I remember him recounting when he and his friend killed a shop keeper as boys. The Soul Hunter series is amazing. Also love how well the Exaulted and the Raptor cult of the bleeding eyes were written. Even the leader of the raptor cult had some awesome redeeming qualities as f#cked as they were. Edit: also the ending of Uzaz was such a perfect example of the night lords. He was forced to wear the red gauntlets wial in reality it was one of his brothers thst would go on killing sprees on the lower decks but frame Uzaz most times. Even in his final moments of clarity when he was attempting to his betrayer, he never had the chance to redeem himself in Talos eyes. Death is nothing compaired to vindication, unfortunatly Uzaz didnt get his. And his traitor brother never gave up his secret. Sorry for the spoiler but it is awesome writing, highly recommended.

I am big fan of night lords, currently I am trying to read all night lords related books. I started this journey with the omnibus so I am happy that you have made a video about Talos himself. Maybe in future check another night lord called Gendor Skraivok the painted count. He has quite complex story, form being a rich nostraman count to making a pact with a deamon

Maybe politics of Chaos. Like there are commander better than Abaddon but they are biased towards one god.
Maybe if TTS continued, they might explore Abaddon (like he is seen as loser, but turned out that he is smarter than he seems. At least playing off rivalry to keep his position, maybe convincing rival officers to turn on one that would usurp him.

Talos and Sevitar are both night lords characters that I wish we got more of due to them being interesting, complex characters. Hopefully GW gives us a Sevitar book seeing as his story isn't over yet (though unfortunately GW likes to keep the Loyal chapters with traitor geneseed's founding mysterious)
Personal head canon is that Sev escaped the DA and then founded a Black-shield chapter with fellow former Night Lords that would follow him

The Talos trilogy was my first introduction to the Night Lords so it really confused me when I found out a lot of people think they're one of the worst legions
Because Talos is an exception to the rule of Night Lords.

People tend to confuse "good" with "admirable". The Night Lords are very good in that they are very interesting, diverse of thought, and layered. They are not "admirable" in that they tend to be absolute monsters in general. Kinda Like Curze himself; not at all an admirable person, but a very interesting one to read about.

ADB is a goat with his Night Lords trilogy, "The Emperor's gift", "Betrayer" and "First Heretic".
I mean, creating such badass characters like Talos, Argel Tal, Lothara Sarrin, Hyperion etc is good enough, but small details everynow and then is just UHHH SO GOOD.
To think that some (very small amount of) people think that ADB writes Imperials as dumb shit-heads. I'd place him just below Dan Abnett (my absolute favorite) in terms of quality writing. ;/

One badass thing I wish you mentioned... The new NL bearing his geneseed, called Decimus. Is the aforementioned baby of Octavia and Septimus. They actually named their child somewhat in honor of Talos
There’s some dispute over that.
Whether he’s called Decimus because First Claw was the last of the 10th Company or if he genuinely is the son of Coreth and Eurydice.
Talos specifically helped them escape to Imperial custody.
On top of that a child of a navigator might also be too genetically unstable to support geneseed.

I absolutely love Uzas, his struggle with khornite corruption is inspiring and the way his story ends fills me with rage (10/10)
Yeah, he was wild but actually comical as well. I love that little moment when First Claw is fleeing the exploding ship and Uzas stops to pick up more skulls for the skull thrones and Talos jams a bolter to his head and hisses 'LEAVE. THE DAMN. SKULLS'.
My favorite was when they were attempting to stop the dreadnought revival.

Well his Black Legion series made me actually like Abaddon (when he met up with Khayon without his full armour on) for a while so that's saying something!
I really like the night lords and Talos and his Merry band of misfits made me love them even more. Dude had a really good speech in the third book
The Night Lords omnibus are honestly my favorite books of all time. So incredibly well written and just filled with awesome character arcs by the entire cast, with some pretty heavy plot twists (especially towards the end there). Great video, casting light on these great books!

When you you're a space marine sadist that is considered the best out of a legion of sadists.
You forgot to mention Decimus inherited his gene-sire's memories and its obvious that Talos personality is a major factor in Decimus, as Decimus wears his armour in almost the exact same way as Talos did, with the only addition the winged helm. (I don't count skull trophies and flesh capes as differences, as that's just the way NLs operate when they have time.)
Well, If we're being particular his war gear is basically a tribute to all the fallen members of first claw with I believe a helmet similar to xarl's, a cape like uzas and a few other things from mercution and cyrion. I suspect he possesses a good chunk of Talos's memories and tries to honour those who followed the old way which Talos preached rather than just running from conflict whenever it got remotely fair. The other interesting possibility is that he either learned about them from lucoryphus, variel and the atramentar who followed him or from Octavia and Septimus who showed a certain level of respect for first claw (as shown by her saying Xarl was a good man) and are speculated to be the parents of Decimus (Maruc was the 9th servant of Talos so it's possible either they named their son Decimus in memory of Talos or Variel gave him the name when he implanted the geneseed).
I loved the fact that they actually laughed in the book, It showed me that even evil space Bat men can have chuckle

That Night Lords omnibus is honestly one of the literary highpoints of 40k, it manages to explore a few things unexplored about astartes psychology and development through Talos’s flashbacks. Also the series has a high amount of human perspectives to showcase how absolutely daunting it is to even face a Night Lords squad, regardless of if you’re hundreds of humans on a ship, or even several squads of well battle worn Astartes. While his First Claw squad are centuries battle traine it can show how Night Lords, despite being underdogs when fighting most other Astartes legions, can still scrape wins by using every dirty tactic in the book. In a universe where everything is super lethal at a mass rate, traditional in a sense the night lords horrific tactics come across as logistical shortcutting lol
Make no mistake they are evil asf tho and the book does not shy away from that.
The Night Lords are one of my favourite factions, for sure. They're so enigmatic individually

I really hope some writers one day develop or create the lore of more loyalist chapter from traitor legions. I think they are more interesting than the heroic blue boys and a loyalist Night Lord chapter would be cool as hell
Space Sharks might be Night Lords. Blood Ravens might be Thousand Sons. Exorcists might be Word Bearers. Soul Drinkers could be Emperors Children.
The Space Sharks novel is kinda mid but I liked how they described the Webway. Their founder gave them some kind of dark glass. Was it Konrad? Was it some unknown Space Marine? Nobody knows.

I cant really come up with something for the Luna Wolves/Sons of Horus and I think Word Bearer chapter would be a bad idea (still: Faithful Harbingers)
@@Robahomusic Space Sharks are the Terran elements of the Raven Guard; that's been confirmed in all but the most explicit of ways. Their founder was Shade Lord Arkhas Fal. There may be some droplets of traitor gene-seed in there, but that's all.

The Huron Blackheart book was another good example of Chaos Marines being written well
This was the trilogy that opened me up to Aaron Demski-Boden and he instantly became one of my favorite 40k writers.
There is also the fact that he had a conversation with a traitor marine that basically revealed how fucked the concept of time is in the Warp and he basically didn't bat an eye when he explained how he viewed his own perception of time in the Warp
This deep dive into the character is really badass and a lot of fun I also appreciate that it's a nightlord video something I've come not to expect a whole lot

The Palatine Blade guy in the White Scars book, Path of Heaven, is also rather compelling. Skillful, determined, and kind of embodying the flawed but still acceptable Emperor's Children pre-Heresy. Cool end as well.

Reading the NL trilogy is what made me play Night Lords, and I've literally never had any real desire to play another faction. I started in 2011, although I absolutely have not been playing the whole time. Still, even now I adore their aesthetics and premise more than anything else.

Back in a day I was lucky to start reading 40k books from this Night Lord's trilogy. After that I thought that all Traitor Astartes have good written and interesting characters. Damm I was wrong :(

Don't forget the shit he did to fuck with the imperium. Talos came up w the idea to excruciate (their top tier form of torture) all the best psychers at seguelsa, and then finish them off with his navigators eye. All to transmit a psychic wave that fucked up hundreds of neighboring planets and warp space. Talos basically used a reversed version of the sacrifices to keep the god emperor alive 😈
The nightlords trilogy is easily my favourite piece of 40k fiction. Adb masterfully manages to spin the story around these murderers and traitors, that you almost sympathise with them and immediately hits you with a nugget of their absolute evil.
Remember, just because you can construct a justification for your evil deeds does not make them less evil….

He‘s my favorite 40k Character. And Aaron Dembsky Bowden is a true genius
The Night Lords were really a mixed bag. Totally psychotic, while being very level headed. They don't even use Chaos for most of them since it'd just be another master to rule over them. They just scavenge and act more as pirates than submit to Chaos. And pirates are more interesting than Khorne Berserkers or Plague Marines. I may not like the Night Lords, but I will acknowledge that they have some of the best lore of all Legions, loyalist and traitor alike.
I just very recently finished this and have been waiting to watch this video and the other Night Lords video because I was reading this.
Talos was such a awesome intro into the books of 40k, I know there are hundreds and starting is probably better in 30k, but I've always been a Chaos fan and Talos was I think the perfect intro for me. He's such a cool character that I had come to love, because of his hidden nobility deep down under his rampant evilness, I loved seeing the two sides mix into the dark nobility that is what the Night Lords could have been.
hopefully the new night lord leader will be able to untie the night lords and are able to be redeem and join the emperor once more but are treated better then before

Unapologetic Eldar simp here, and say what you will about how much the writers hate them, but the imagery of Jain Zarr striding like a horror movie creature *through* members of "the horror Legion", only taken out by dramatic self-destruction at the very end, makes for a *hell* of a scene.

Talos wasnt a hardcore criminal? I remember him recounting when he and his friend killed a shop keeper as boys. The Soul Hunter series is amazing. Also love how well the Exaulted and the Raptor cult of the bleeding eyes were written. Even the leader of the raptor cult had some awesome redeeming qualities as f#cked as they were.
Edit: also the ending of Uzaz was such a perfect example of the night lords. He was forced to wear the red gauntlets wial in reality it was one of his brothers thst would go on killing sprees on the lower decks but frame Uzaz most times. Even in his final moments of clarity when he was attempting to his betrayer, he never had the chance to redeem himself in Talos eyes. Death is nothing compaired to vindication, unfortunatly Uzaz didnt get his. And his traitor brother never gave up his secret. Sorry for the spoiler but it is awesome writing, highly recommended.
