Thanks for the video. Very informative. I have an old Kioti tractor with the DH1101 Kubota/Daedong diesel engine. Just finished a rebuild, so good compression. Went through entire fuel system, so sealed up tight. Verified glow plugs are working properly (gets cold here, 0C or colder sometimes, so glow plugs are a must). First thing in the morning it still starts hard, requires lots of throttle to start, plus runs rough for 15-20 seconds before clearing up. Starts fine once the engine gets some heat in it though, although it still seems to need a quick warm up on the glow plugs to do so easily. Seems a little down on power too, although I've never run a tractor with a diesel engine this small, so I can't be sure on that. I'm going to try checking the injection pump timing next after watching your video. A little different procedure than your 4d56, but in theory the same idea. If this is the issue the pump timing on it must be retarded and needs to have shims removed to advance it. I know this is an IDI engine, so they tend not to run smooth cold, but this is really bad. I had an International 7.3L IDI V8 for a brief time, and that would start instantly in these conditions. It would smoke a little at first but required nothing beyond the high idle to start and run fairly smoothly right away, even at freezing temps.
Well, looks like timing was not the issue. Checked it according to the repair manual and it's dead on, so something else is happening. I don't know the hours on the machine (hour meter is broken), but based on the condition of the machine, it's got a lot of hours, so it's entirely possible I have a worn out set of injectors and/or injection pump. I'm just going to leave it alone for now. It does what I need it to and with the weather getting warmer now the starting isn't as bad. Maybe this winter I'll go through the fuel injection system.
Thanks for the update. Did you play around the pump timing? Thing is with injectors one tell tale sign that its bad is white smoke and so with pump timing.
@@MrDIYer Thanks for the reply. I'll look for the white smoke next time I run it. I don't remember seeing that though. Just a little black smoke when you feed it full throttle. No I didn't mess with the timing at all. The timing on these is done by cranking the engine over by hand with the compression release engaged and #1 cylinder injection line cracked open. When the pump pulses out some fuel, the timing mark on the flywheel for #1 should be in at the inspection window arrow, and it was exactly on that mark when I checked it. To adjust it is a pretty involved process in which you remove the injector lines, pull the pump out of the block and remove or add shims. This involves disconnecting the governor linkages and springs, which is harder to do when the timing cover is on it. Tedious and time consuming, so I just left it alone.

To: Mr. DIYer i came across your video maybe i will give this a try rather than having my injection pump 4d56 gambled for 8k. Actually i tried to consult a fuel injection shop here in our place and they told me to replace the fly pump of my injection pump because the fuel pump is soft not stiff when they tried to pump it but my pump is brand new its only 1week old when i installed it. I'm having this issue of hard start every morning. Although it will later start when heater is on for 1 long minute but a white smoke comes outs from the tail pipe.

i have a proble with my 2C diesel engine, and by trial and error i was able to figure that timing affects the starting process. however, i have a problem, the engine gives off too much smoke ONLY when you REV., the air filter is removed to ensure i have no clogged air filter, fuel filter is clean. i removed and cleaned the exhaust manifold. i even, bought new fuel injection valves and calibrate and recondition the old ones. both, gives me same results, too much smoke when you rev. the color is a bit black. with white smoke. i'm running out of ideas, my option is to check the valves or do a complete overhaul. can you pls give an advise, how to diagnose properly? thanks
Hello I have an idling problem with my 4d32. Its start right off even with the cold weather but does not idle, I need to step on the pedal so that it idles, but it idles fine when engine s hot. During idling in the morning the engine is very wobbly you can feel the whole truck vibrating and moving even with new nozzle tip and newly tuned valve clearance. I did advance the injection pump timing about a year ago and that solve the idling problem in the morning but it did not last long. Its noticable that when the engines cold the idle is very low and slowly returns to its proper idling state when its warming up.
I have problems starting my l200 4D56-T (2004 with the electronic pump). Pump timing, injectors, glow plugs, fuel hoses, fuel filter & filter housing and the stop solenoid nothing fixed the starting problem... but at least I got the power back what it was lacking :D

A.K.A King of 4d56, I am loosing fuel pump pressure, whenever i pump to its hardest seconds later it will become soft. i have already replaced the tubing connecting my pump to the injection. i have replaced also the fuel pump. still it wont get hard (hahaha) i mean it still losses hardness/stiffness of the pump. its my practice now to pump it many times (after lossing stiffness) in order to start my engine. i hope you can enlighten me about what could i miss in DIYing my mit adventure 98. thank you in advance... your videos helped me a lot already in DIYing my 4d56.
Theres a leak allowing air to get in. Try feeling through the lift pump itself underneath the filter, the bleeder screw. Look for signs of diesel. Look all over.

Can you explain why ( offset or out of tune injection pump ) would only hard-start during the first start of the day? I start it in the morning and it's hard to get going, but throughout the day i.e getting groceries and coming back it starts no problem? already checked the fuel filter lines for air etc, glow-plugs are fine... i'm gathering issue for a diagnoses, thanks
If your vehicle does not have a electric fuel pump and uses a pump that is shown in the vid, it's only normal for it to hard start in the morning since the fuel goes back to the tank if you didn't start in a long period of time and if you start it the fuel line will get filled with fuel as the fuel pump is spinning you could reduce the hard starting by pumping the fuel pump, manually to bleed out the air everytime you start it in the morning
@@The_Bruh_God cycling the glowplugs works in the sense it starts right up, but I know the compression is not the issue ( had the engine overhauled or rebuilt a few months ago ) vs I get in and try to start my truck. Does the key cycling activate any other pump or prime for the line? how would we explain this scenario ?
@@travishaycock723 yes by cycling the key the ecu will check every sensors thats why it's recommended when your key is in on position or near start position , wait for like 3-4 sec or till all the timing belt light or glow plug lights come off and then start it and also I did some research on your case and some say it's the mass air flow sensor since in the morning the air is cold and when the MAF sensor failed to tell your fuel injection system that it should adjust air to fuel mixtures accordingly
@@travishaycock723 oh cool I also have the same car L200 4 door pick up and in my experience I don't think timing is the issue for your L200 since in my experience my L200 also hard starts in the morning but after that it start up fine because it's already warm up and just like I mentioned in the first comment fuel tend to go back to the tank after a long period of no start and also if timing is the issue it will always hard start even when the engine is already warmed up

No sir. Its more complicated. Common rail (crdi) is controlled by the ecu, engine control unit aka comluter box. Unlike a ve pump which is purely mechanical.
Good day sir. I have the same engine 4d56 pajero. It starts no problem if its cold or havent been warmed up it will start. But when the engine is at operating temperature or if you run the vehicle for 40mins plus then turn of the engine, if you start it directly after turning off it wont start. Starter cranks but engine wont start. Any ideas as to what is causing it po? Thanks 🙂
But after turning off the engine if i wait 1 minute or 2 minutes before starting it again then it starts no problem. This not starting problem only happens when engine is hot or at operating temperature.
You do have to be careful adjusting the pump advanced or retarded not to damage the engine. The timing has to be pretty precise and I would put a marker on the pump body and housing before undoing the nuts and moving the pump around. Usually they are set for best performance but as the engines get older the timing can become more and more delayed (retarded). So they might need some advancing... but pretty minor movement.

I wpuld just try to bleed.the air out of the fuel line first, amd checl for a dirty or clogged filter

Gud day,,i replace my fuel pump assy,,what cause fuel pump when i pump it in a second the pump stuck and wont back,,wat would b the problem,,tnx
not sure, maybe the spring of the pump is gone? or maybe the pump itself is faulty
Even da old 1 has d same problem,,wen i push it it not comin back,,even when i pull it,,its hard
@@deolitopampellona7413 try pumping it without the hose connected. See if it comes back up. If it does then you might have a clogged in the hose

Good day sir. I have the same engine 4d56 pajero. It starts no problem if its cold or havent been warmed up it will start. But when the engine is at operating temperature or if you run the vehicle for 40mins plus then turn of the engine, if you start it directly after turning off it wont start. Starter cranks but engine wont start. Any ideas as to what is causing it po? Thanks 🙂
But after turning off the engine if i wait 1 minute or 2 minutes before starting it again then it starts no problem. This not starting problem only happens when engine is hot or at operating temperature.

Great
You do have to be careful adjusting the pump advanced or retarded not to damage the engine. The timing has to be pretty precise and I would put a marker on the pump body and housing before undoing the nuts and moving the pump around. Usually they are set for best performance but as the engines get older the timing can become more and more delayed (retarded). So they might need some advancing... but pretty minor movement.
