Champion Labs makes Mobil-1, K&N, AC DELCO after market, Bosch, Super Tech, Royal Purple......They make many different filters for all price points for different brands. It is like ordering off a menu you pick case thickness, seal materials, case design, bypass design, etc.....and they make exactly what you ask for. They are one of the few companies with a lot of options that you can pick and chose from. Few of the other big oil filter companies give other people anywhere near that level of options for a re-branded automotive filter. Wix, Hastings, Donaldson, Fram, Puralator, Baldwin, Champion Labs all make filters for many other people all over the world.

I worked for Fram in Albion Illinois. We made most of the filters on this video. The pleated glass pleat is the better filtering media. The yellowed or brown paper is a cheaper option. The depth and number of pleats is important. Larger surface area for filtration.
The over flowing adhesive is because the cap spins on a machine to distribute the adhesive evenly. Its dont to all the filters in this video. Also the filtration media is put on the cap by hand.

My guess is the reason that they made one of the holes larger than the other four holes is they wanted the volume of all the holes added together to match the volume of the center hole so there would be no restriction in flow by the filter housing since the inlet and Outlet would be the same size.

When I was in the army I was based in Germany for some years and I first came across Royal Purple as many of the US forces personnel use it in their cars. It’s not familiar in the UK and I tried it in my car. It seems to be okay but LiquiMoly, Castrol and Shell seems to be better. Royal Purple seems okay but it’s a fancy sounding name like LiquiMoly is that consumers would go for. It’s just my thoughts as my car didn’t run all that well on it.

I worked in the industrial industry building lube skids & all of the big name clients like Caterpillar require a specific micron rating for there engines. These type of videos have no significance without actually testing them, you also need to take in to calculation the weight of the oil and how it changes after being warmed up by the engine.

    • @joelnrs
      @joelnrs ปีที่แล้ว

I think these types of videos do offer significance in terms of being able to see what is actually inside of a filter you are putting on your engine. Micron testing and rating is important and I see the point regarding that for meeting spec requirements, but I am happy to see all of these videos without having to actually buy them and cut them open myself.

Gasket retention failure can be a HUGE problem. Honda had a retention issue with their OEM filters for 2nd gen. CR-Vs where the factory original filter gasket remained adhered to the engine block during the first oil change. Some techs failed to notice this, resulting in stacked gaskets and oil leakage. Oil leaked onto the exhaust and started a fire. Several vehicles lost due to this. Gotta like the positive retention even though I'm pretty sure I'd notice a gasket missing on the removed filter or one stuck to the block.

Good oil. Never had a single mechanical issue.
Did a great job protecting those huge lumpy camshafts and cylinder walls at 14,000 rpm.
Worked well with the wet sump clutch too.
RP greases and spray lubricants were good too as was the Purple Ice coolant replacement.
I never had any complaints with the RP products and used the oil in my cars and RV too.
Heck we used the used racing oil in our lawn mowers, generators and other equipment!
It never seems to break down.
Amsoil and RedLine are good products as well.
    Motul is solid also.

Just a tip I do know someone who had re-rebuild an engine they just rebuilt due to an oil filter oring getting stuck to the block and a new filter with oring being placed over it. Engine had enough oil pressure to keep the idiot light off but not enough to keep the rod bearings happy. The reason for oring sticking was that the new engine paint glued it to the block. Either way, always check that the oring wasn't left behind and make sure there isn't paint under the oring for oil filter. Easiest way is just to put an oil filter on before painting.

Filtration is very important to remove impurities. BUT Oil Flow is as or possibly more important to pad/insulate bearings, lifters, cylinder walls , remove excessive heat & protect turbos. SO, to much "Filtration" isn't worth smoking a $10,15, 20k motor!

One thing about the uniformity of the pleats with wire backing to consider is it's unused. When you actually run and cover it with hot flowing oil the wire is likely to cause them to perform similar. With respect to the uniformity effecting flow I think there will be enough give + - they'll end up the same in use. Or when you pull them out it would be virtually identical between say the royal and wix.

Wix and Fram ultra, Purolator, and Delco were well rated. Looks like not much has changed. There were cheap filters that had metal bits from machining the case still attached. based on quality and not overprice. Unfortunately I have not been able to get into Amsoil Filtration System even I already have it just planning where/when to install and location.

The sins hidden under the Fram is the fact it was lab tested, had 100% filtration at 20 microns.
    98% filtration at 10 microns.
It also had the best flow rate of all the synthetic filters in the test, while still managing to be the cheapest.
Granted that was the old design, and now there is a new model due to their new parent company penny pinching. The model tested would be the same as the one you have with you.

I've heard the Royal Purple costing around$16-$18. That is subjective since prices can fluctuate but it typically stays around $16-$18 give or take. The Fram Ultra Synthetic roughly goes for $8-$10 dollars at Wal-Mart and is readily available instead of ordering it or if you know a royal purple retailer. Personally for me, Royal Purple is a great filter but its not worth it. The Wix, Purolator, and K&N are great as well and those are typically also $11-$14. Also readily available at certain auto parts stores.

But that $3 Purolator has a history of the filtering media tearing while in use. I will use my Fram Ultra with a much more stout, full synthetic media. And if I can't get that, I'll go with a Wix XP.

Price difference is moot. Even if you change oil four time a year which is overkill for average driver, you're talking 30 extra dollars a year. For me it's worth the 30 dollars for extra protection. I've been using royal purple filters and oils for more than a decade in my cars' engines, transmissions, differentials, and transfer cases. One is a 2000 the other is 2004. IMO new or rebuilt components cost more than then little bit extra I spend on premo oils and filters.

I was comparing Fram and Royal Purple at the store yesterday and saw that the Fram Ultra has 99% filtration down to 20 microns while the Royal Purple only does to 25 microns. Seems kinda funny how that works and that the joint on the RP is tacky and looks like it'd allow debris to get through.

If you cut enough filters apart, you will find their are a limited number of filter manufacturers in North America, indeed in the world. Many of the everyday brands we see are made by the same few companies with a different paint job. Many "brands" don't even manufacture anything, they just buy a filter with their name painted on the side. Some of the brands are owned by the came company and they produce a cheap brand one brand in one factory and a higher priced brand in another, or just produce one quality and sell it at different price levels.
You could look up the specs from the various manufacturers and compare them if you could get comparable specs across the board, but you can't. Manufacturers play fast and loose with micron ratings. Beta ratings and contaminant holding ratings are also a bit arbitrary. If they all use the same SAE standard test and release the results, you would know.
I will say these things after 45 years in the Heavy Duty business using and selling filters:
    - I had a premium brand filter that had an electron beam welded can versus vs. a drawn one and it leaked a fine spray. Not a good thing near a turbocharger.
    - I had a premium quality filter in marine application, freshwater recreational use, used one season. Dry docked over winter it rusted right through.
    - I had premium filters that the gasket wasn't secure, it would fall out if you tipped the filter which some installers didn't notice which led to unhappy customers and an engine failure.
    - Filters with thicker cans will fair better under high pressure caused by cold temperatures and/or high volume oil pumps. They will take the strain after lesser cans have swollen or burst, not uncommon in the north.
    - I've never had or seen a failure of a cheap oil filter under normal conditions.
50 years ago Fram had a TV ad, "You can pay me now or pay me later" in which a crusty mechanic advised "Change your oil and filter now or pay me to replace your engine later". It was good advise.
