Don't they have the tooling for the Jag controllers as well? It seems to me that would be the perfect solution as a go-between for the intellivision/coleco controller discussion.
Any time Pat begins a segment with the word "quick" I immediately know its going to be over 10 minutes. "quick follow-up" ... 14 minutes :D Loving it though.
I'm pretty sure I can find those portable miniconsoles for both Coleco, Intellivision and Genesis for far cheaper than that. Oh, and completely legal and not scams.
At a bare minimum they are horrible at PR and badly organized. At worst they are outright liars and scam artists. At this point who actually thinks this will ever see the light of day in either situation?
+devilmikey00 that is what I was thinking... but then i wonder, why are they so determined? Why didn't this project already fold? Maybe it's a cash grab and they think they can get more out of it from people who aren't up on the story of these guys and their product.... but for some reason, I seem to think maybe they will actually come up with a machine that works (what ever that winds up being in the end) but who knows if it will be worth it or any good. I kind of hope it turns out to be a cool machine in the end (maybe they change the entire approach) but I hope it isn't going to be the hardware version of the ouya.
+MrDebauch I think that if any machine is released, it'll basically be like a retron without any of the unique features they are promising. I feel the biggest red flag in this is that they are infringing on copyrights with wild abandon. Wether they get sued or not, they apparently think they can slap games in carts, maybe even reprint art etc, and that's just okay cause it's old?
"It's not JUST a SNES jammed into a different shell." Translation? "That is what we did, but the final product will also have a ham sandwich and orange soda jammed in as well. And maybe a condom dispenser. It's not JUST a SNES jammed into a different shell. It's more than that. It has a built in McDonald's along with the SNES. See, we're legit."
There's already an at games flash back intellivison with 61 games on it for $40... on amazon keep spreading the word Pat and Ian people need to know this project is straight ripping people off.
Looks like all the backlash and shenanigans Mike Kennedy and team have done has gotten to them. They posted yesterday on their FB page that they delayed the Kickstarter until further notice. From their Retro VGS page: "We’re delaying the Kickstarter for the Coleco Chameleon to make it even better! Last week during Toy Fair in New York, we had the opportunity to demonstrate the Coleco Chameleon to the industry, gamers and retailers for the first time. Their response was beyond anything we’d imagined. Major retailers provided feedback on the product and expressed real interest in carrying the product for the 2016 holiday season. And, very importantly, major game companies expressed interest in providing games for our system, which meant we’d need more time to solidify those partnerships and maximize the content. Our team’s overriding goal has always been to deliver the best possible system and experience for gamers. If there’s ever anything we can do to enhance the product, we believe the extra time is worth it. Therefore, we have decided to delay the pre-sell, i.e. Kickstarter, campaign in order to finalize our prototype and work with developers on having the best possible content. This delay will not affect our overall launch date for the Coleco Chameleon. There has also been a whirlwind of interest, speculation and curiosity regarding the insides of the Chameleon. We are delighted by this and happy to confirm that we will be releasing photographs of the system now on our Facebook page, and we’ll focus on turning our prototype into a production-ready product. We’ll keep you posted on any major news on our Facebook page and will let you know when we launch a pre-sell program leading up to the Christmas season. Stay tuned, and thanks for your continued support."
It's sad that all of this started a war between people in the retro gaming community. I mean I agree that based on all the information available, it seems strange that anyone would believe or back Mr. Kennedy in the community knowing all of what was going on during this whole debacle. I emplore everyone to read the thread on Atari Age that is like 400 pages long that has a lot of insider insight into the issue. Really though, I think Pat and Ian had the best of intentions, to protect consumers and fans of "Retro" gaming. Thanks for the video Pat! I always enjoy the podcast.
The Intellivision Flashback actually has 60, but I don't recall the sound being shit. However the Colecovision Flashback (which also had 60 games, not include retailer exclusives) had some sound issues, namely with games like Frenzy.
There's a simple answer. USB Atari Jaguar controllers. You got the number pad, you got buttons, you got a d-pad, you have everything you'd need for Colecovision or Intellivision games that don't use a paddle.
Near the end of the video, the theme for the Never Ending Story started fading in and I was like...well this is an interesting way to end a video. And then I realized it was actually playing in another tab I had open.
Just to add my two cents....I'm sure people have noticed this but let me reiterate....The controller is a SNES and Wii U Pro Chimera. Again..... C'moonn Maaynnn!
There's an old saying in Texas, I know it's in Tennessee, it's probably in Texas. It says "Fool me one time shame on.....shame on you.....you fooled me once I get fooled again"
I just looked on their FB page and they added an image of the console with a clear top to show the motherboard, can you guys add input towards this? I won't be buying it, but it doesn't look like an SNES mini board to me.
Wow I feel lucky on my Kickstarter then. I am working on a Pinball Machine and my Kickstarter is to fund it. If you want to talk about it let me know my kickstarter still has 16 days on it. The pins theme is weird to some it will be a big part of the pin though and will make sense when I get more of it built. I have been up front with the backers and give some solid updates on what I am working on. I was also tha random guy at PRGE that got a pic with you. Any ways hope to hear what you may think of my crazy kickstarter.
The PR kickstarter crap translates to me "You get a SNES JR in a Jag shell !" The limited games suggest they can't get rights to any old games, and it's all as you said to give HOPE that it's somehow legit. The toyfair scam is really insane, 'not JUST' comment seems carefully added in case there is litigation... I expect them to say 'someone at the company was dumb and later fired for this." What an insult to attempt it, but since the Fair had loads of investor types, we can all get why they slapped it together ASAP. I expect an emulator to come out the other side.
They tried to say they couldn't open the "prototype" because it was too fragile. What kind of a shitty cop out is that? Even if it IS true, it shows massive incompetence, because they knew they had to get something ready for that Toy Fair...how can you arrive there with a piece of equipment that can't survive being opened up? I also love how they claim to have written this SNES FPGA in the few months since the Retro VGS IndieGoGo collapse, but they couldn't even get someone to hook up a power light LED so that their console looked even remotely finished. It only turned on when plugged in. Why? Because it was an SNES board jammed into a shell it wasn't designed for, and they had no direct access to the power button...that's why. He'll show something different in a few days, but he still has to prove that that shit actually does something in order to get funded. All his deleting of Facebook posts asking questions he can't answer, the deception, the bullshit excuses he comes up with to justify the SNES AV out...all he's done is increase the microscope this thing is going to be under, and people aren't going to trust him to the level they would have if he'd just been open and honest.
Between the Retro VGS and the Coleco Chameleon this has been funny and entertaining. The system might be as good as the Multiple Classic Computer MCC or it might be more powerful than the Nvidea shield TV haha. Oh well I can hope. Wii does a killer job of emulating the Colecovision.
The problem with the Coleco Retro VGS or whatever the hell it is, is that its a solution to a problem nobody has. We already have hardware to play retro games, we have many different types with their own libraries of games that we all love. Theres a lot do discover for a lot of collectors. You can even buy pirated carts with like 400 games and actual newly programmed games that people sell for SNES and Genesis and probably more systems than that. This however is a new system, with new games and new cartridges. I can see the appeal from a collectors standpoint, as we all know its doomed to flop real hard real fast. I can appreciate the effort though
Ian, the math nerd inside me has to correct you: "99.999 repeating" is actually 100. You probably know that already, and speaking without a script it's easy for such small things to slip out :)
+Adam Davidson Common misconception. Consider this: 1/3 = 0.333 repeating. multiply both sides with 3 and you get 3/3 = 0.999 repeating, and 3/3 is 1. More formally, if you zoom in on the number line around 99.999 repeating and 100, and zoom down into infinity, there will be no "space" between them where you can put anything... not even a molecule. So therefore 99.999 repeating is the same as 100, because there's nothing different between them. (I might express myself a little weird, and for that I apologize)
+JOSHUA KANE No actually, if you look at a number line they ARE on the same place, because no matter how far you zoom in, 99.99 repeating can not come any closer to 100.
Haven't looked to see if anyone else has put this in the comments - just checked the coleco chameleon Facebook page and they are delaying the kickstarter now and there are also pictures of a clear case with some sort of FPGA dev board in there. Can't see how the cartridge is connected. Would be a lot more believable if they showed it outside the case.
Looks like it is not even started yet.....unless I am searching incorrectly - www.kickstarter.com/discover/advanced?term=Coleco+Chameleon&sort=newest&seed=2427668&page=1 - Oops! Looks like we couldn’t find any results. Why not change some things around or broaden your search? You can also try:
Pat, (Maybe a topic on the next CUPodcast) were you seriously considering selling you prized NWC carts to the Pawn Stars? At would price would you have actually sold them? Also, was everything that showed up on tv how it actually went down?
6 Games?!? Holy shit the R4 folks must be shitting themselves over that much entertainment on one cartridge, truly the 21st century videogame tech has finally arrived!
As somone that participates in Hackathons, there's NOTHING WRONG with doing a proof of concept. There would have been NOTHING wrong with as you said at 13:00 with just admitting you put the SNES hardware in the shell then explaining it as "we can play SNES coded games on our hardware". But I am so weary that they are not being upfront with what thy did at NY Toy SHow
+Gamemaster00999 At least, the Ouya was honest and straightforward all the way. It was marketed as it was, a budget console with Android. At least they didn't demo a fake board lol
I wish that they would just sell Jaguar shells. Modders could make better use out of them than these charlatans, or if they're actually serious about this project, it would help raise capital to fund it. I'd love to stuff the guts of an SNES/SFC inside of them, though I'm not sure if the original versions' boards would fit or the cartridge slot is wide enough. Besides the yellowing that we all know about, the shells were really fragile for some reason. I see ones on eBay all the time that have salvageable motherboards in them, but the shells are beat to hell.
Yeah, it's mentioned several times in this video and others and is mentioned in the description too with a link to the Talk Retro podcast where they partially admitted to using a SNES mini.
At this point, it's starting to seem ironically *appropriate* for the system to resemble an Atari Jaguar, it's doing almost as well before it even comes out. And yet, Atari Jaguar is starting to appeal to me MORE than this farce of a system. That's pretty bad.
This isn't going to end well at all. I think that kickstarter will drop this fast. They don't need to allow every idea on their site, but this one might end up doing more harm than good for them.
Eventrough it was fake, but if we want it, we can still save the project, even with those fake once in mind, i was thinking, why not solder a motherboard with a 32bit chip & chipsets on top of the snes jr motherboard wich takes advantage of the snes frame buffer to stream graphics data to it? For 32bit game, while for 8 & 16bit games we can just use the snes hardware, the game's rom should be installed on a jaguar case card with a capacity of 4GB or more. For HDMI output,we can tap to RGB & digital audio signal from the snes and convert it to HDMO while for composite video & analogue stereo sound, we can tap the signal from composite chip as composite output, i was also thinking of installing a multi tap in it for 2 second player but convert the output to usb. And if there are no snes boards availible anymore, then we can alway's come with revisions based on good clones, emulation and replication to get around that. The chamelion should be made in different colors. That's the idea.
Wow... They are now banning people from their facebook page if you ask them to show the internals of that unit or explain why they used a SNES Jr in it.
The moment you mentioned Intellivision controllers, my thumbs started to ache in sympathy. Muscle memory? Not exactly. More like cuticle trauma at an early age.
This console has become THE "wait-and-see" console for me. Not even anything from the eighth gen could reach how uneasy and unsure I feel towards this. Then again, with that mindset, I'm almost entertaining the thought that this could possibly be good.
I'm not familiar with this, does this just play Intellevision and Colecovision games? If that's the case, what's the point? There's plenty of ways to play those games already, even outside of emulation. There's flashback consoles, and there's game compilations released on various systems. Hardcore fans will care about this even less, since it doesn't even seem to be faithful to original hardware at all. Also, Coleco/Intellivisions aren't really that expensive.
mitchhup Hahaha. No you're not. Every mathematician knows that 0.999... = 1. It's one of the two proofs every respectable logician should know, along with how we know there are infinitely many primes.
mitchhup Okay, little pretend mathematician. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you'll at least be able to follow this proof and stop making a fool of yourself. Let x = 0.9999... 10x = 9.9999... (multiply by 10) 9x = 9 (subtract x) x = 1 (divide by 9) Therefore x = 1 and x = 0.999..., and thus 1 = 0.999... QED
Is there a kickstarter reward that includes the electrical tape?
Don't they have the tooling for the Jag controllers as well? It seems to me that would be the perfect solution as a go-between for the intellivision/coleco controller discussion.
I know right!
Last I saw, their controller was a generic Wii U pad, but that wouldn't work on a SNES in a Jaguar shell.
If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it must be a Chameleon!
Any time Pat begins a segment with the word "quick" I immediately know its going to be over 10 minutes.
"quick follow-up" ... 14 minutes :D
Loving it though.
If 15 minutes is quick pat's girlfriend must be happy
+Street Guru :O
15 minutes is quick...
Shit, I'd love to be a 15 minute man, but that's just about as rare as a blue moon.
+Street Guru good
Eric Durant I don't think lasting longer than 15 minutes is rare.
ian, your sarcasm gives me life
I'm pretty sure I can find those portable miniconsoles for both Coleco, Intellivision and Genesis for far cheaper than that.
Oh, and completely legal and not scams.
At a bare minimum they are horrible at PR and badly organized. At worst they are outright liars and scam artists. At this point who actually thinks this will ever see the light of day in either situation?
exactly

If you think this is bad, check out the Znaps Kickstarter. It's always best for crap to hit the stores and have been reviewed.
+MrDebauch I think that if any machine is released, it'll basically be like a retron without any of the unique features they are promising.
I feel the biggest red flag in this is that they are infringing on copyrights with wild abandon. Wether they get sued or not, they apparently think they can slap games in carts, maybe even reprint art etc, and that's just okay cause it's old?
sladekiske oh yeah, they are making multi carts i heard for the intellevision and that, right?
"It's not JUST a SNES jammed into a different shell." Translation? "That is what we did, but the final product will also have a ham sandwich and orange soda jammed in as well. Who will win in a MMA fight, Pat vs Ian ???
+Johnny Suarez Pat all day
I'm gonna have to go with Ian. Nothing against pat, I just think he's too nice. Can't even picture him mad.
+Johnny Suarez Pat is working out 5 times a week.
+Milky Lamb so he's a ripped teddy bear
+nhickey84 Pat has gotten mad on the podcasts before, so it's actually not that hard to picture.
Does any one else feel better when Ian keeps his hands above the table?
Why do I keep following the news on this thing? I know it's a terrible idea, and yet...I love hearing you guys talk about it.
There's already an at games flash back intellivison with 61 games on it for $40... on amazon keep spreading the word Pat and Ian people need to know this project is straight ripping people off.
Well, I'm pretty sure there's going to be other new games put into it.
Love the "Horseshack" t-shirt, RIP Mr. Palillo
+Fubar MMA I think that's balki bartokomous, no?
i think you are correct..... they kinda look alike..
They do. I would have preferred Horseshack myself. I loved Welcome Back Kotter.

I ment was, is there a way to contact Kickstarter.
The Intellivision Flashback actually has 60, but I don't recall the sound being shit. However the Colecovision Flashback (which also had 60 games, not include retailer exclusives) had some sound issues, namely with games like Frenzy.

Near the end of the video, the theme for the Never Ending Story started fading in and I was like...well this is an interesting way to end a video. And then I realized it was actually playing in another tab I had open.
I would love an episode like this guest starring Kevtris.
Just to add my two cents....I'm sure people have noticed this but let me reiterate....The controller is a SNES and Wii U Pro Chimera. Again..... C'moonn Maaynnn!

I think pats idea about them having put it into a clear shel is what they should have done.
The PR kickstarter crap translates to me "You get a SNES JR in a Jag shell !"
The limited games suggest they can't get rights to any old games, and it's all as you said to give HOPE that it's somehow legit. It will flop faster than the Jaguar itself!
Wow.Amazing. Can't wait. Where is Friday the 26th when you need it,LOL.
Ian, the math nerd inside me has to correct you: "99.999 repeating" is actually 100. You probably know that already, and speaking without a script it's easy for such small things to slip out :)
No, it's 99 infinitely approaching 100, but never reaching it.
2 + 2 = 22
Math has nothing do with this...
See how silly it sounds?
+Adam Davidson Common misconception.
Consider this: 1/3 = 0.333 repeating. multiply both sides with 3 and you get 3/3 = 0.999 repeating, and 3/3 is 1.

That looks like the Atari Jaguar 64 bit game console. Will it be possible to play these Jaguar games on that new thing? :-)
In my opinion, they should have just made the molds to make special cases for the Raspberry Pi.
Ian you really do not need to use the Vaseline on the lens camera trick.

yeah, I just want an SNES with a Jaguar shell.

What's in the box? What's in the box?! WHAT'S IN THE BOX!!?
Lies and deceit.
This is not the new cartridge based console you are looking for.
So, is this thing on kickstarter now? I want one :D
I will give them this, this console is bat shit crazy.
how bout an atari jaguar controller?
id be surprised if it ends up much more than a pi2 inside in the end.
Why not use a Jaguar styled controller for Colecovision and Intelly games? The system already looks like a Jag anyway.
but does it play pokemon
At this point, it's starting to seem ironically *appropriate* for the system to resemble an Atari Jaguar, it's doing almost as well before it even comes out. And yet, Atari Jaguar is starting to appeal to me MORE than this farce of a system. That's pretty bad.

I don't know, he knows a lot about law so my guess is attorney of some sort?
+JayZeus7 I've always wanted to know if TH-cam is his real job.
Pole dancer
+BlackCrowtv97 he's stated before that he went full time TH-cam a few years ago. But not sure if he still is
Who is the guy they fired?
John Carlson, he's a hardware engineer. They basically threw him under the bus and then reversed over his head
What's wrong with a Jaguar shell with a Jaguar in it?
Im looking at the design of the console, it looks like a modified Atari Jaguar
That's exactly what it is.
Thanks Mr.Edgeworth!
This isn't going to end well at all. I think that kickstarter will drop this fast. They don't need to allow every idea on their site, but this one might end up doing more harm than good for them.
cool iron commando !!
but i rather play the sfc game :-D
You have to? And why?
The retro vgs guys are just plain lying and making shit up again.
Good thing this doesn’t sound EXACTLY like the Atari VCS.
why would anyone support that trash console with how they tried to scam people the first time out and then are still doing shady things....
why did pat sneak in a 666 in there?
illuminati confirmed ;3
+ToyGuruMan ILLUMINATI PARTY 2016
The only way I'd buy this if it does actually get built is if it's under 100 dollars
hdmi output on an 8 / 16 bit game....
oh god why..
ps I googled coleco and the first thing to auto fill was the chameleon scandal.
a lot of the at games systems are 60-80 games
The more they try and fix this thing, the more they break it. It's astonishing how bad a value every single thing about this system is.
Wow... They are now banning people from their facebook page if you ask them to show the internals of that unit or explain why they used a SNES Jr in it.
wow ian, nice shirt
Sadly, The more I hear about this, the less Im interested in it
Sorry i dont do requests!
man i need this! i mean come guys DUCK TAPE!
99.999... = 100.
Proof:
1/3 = 0.333...
3x0.333... = 0.999
Therefore 0.999... = 1
Why don't people just get Raspberry Pis?
They do and is one reason why this will never have much success.
pat do the happy dance i wanna see a video!
They must love you guys..haha
Which tier do they stop with all the bullshit and just send you a human turd?
99.999...% is the same as 100%.
mitchhup
You evidently haven't learned what the "..." part means. It means repeating. So yes, they are equal.
mitchhup
I have a degree in computer engineering and I got good grades in all my math classes. What are you studying? Sports management?
mitchhup
Hahaha. No you're not. Every mathematician knows that 0.999... = 1. It's one of the two proofs every respectable logician should know, along with how we know there are infinitely many primes.
mitchhup
Okay, little pretend mathematician. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you'll at least be able to follow this proof and stop making a fool of yourself.
Let x = 0.9999...
10x = 9.9999... (multiply by 10)
9x = 9 (subtract x)
x = 1 (divide by 9)
Therefore x = 1 and x = 0.999..., and thus 1 = 0.999...
