Started with the Roman Catholic church when they were deciding what to include in the official bible and what texts and letters to leave out. So you have Canonical and Apocryphal.
You do understand that is where the term originated? Canon is the Greek word for list. In ancient times, there were lots of books floating around purporting to tell the stories of various Biblical figures. Scholars and religious leaders, both Jewish and Christian, drew up lists of books that were considered to be authentic. Those were canonical. Books not on the approved lists were non-canonical. Other uses of the term, such as in discussing Star Wars or Sherlock Holmes, are deliberately, and somewhat tongue in cheek, borrowing the term from its religious roots.
@@superbrad3716 Yup. Council of Nicaea. You would be surprised in the amount of weird books that they had to look through and decide if it was trustworthy or not. For example, one book (I think it was the Gospel of Thomas) essentially had Jesus acting like Zeus rampaging on Earth.
FWIW, the Council of Nicea had nothing to do with determining the Biblical canon. The real story is much more complicated. Perhaps ironically, the canon evolved over time.
Master J Dunna Was going to say the same thing. At the time of Jesus, Jews considered the Maccabee books canonical, which is why Catholics and Orthodox do so today. Later in Jewish history, Judaism made books originally written in Greek apocryphal. Which Protestants followed. I am Catholic, but learned this from a rabbi when I worked for a Jewish nonprofit years ago. This was a great video, Alex!!
@@WesMordine That would make sense, and that is the case for Judaism. Christianity gets a bit more muddled, the term Canonical comes from the Roman Catholic church, possibly Eastern Orthodox as well, and the several councils they had to decide what religious texts were going to be in the Bible and which would be considered Apocryphal.
@@WesMordine Well something most Christians forget is that Yesuha ben Yousef was a Jew. They also forget all of the books of the New Testament were written after he died. The odd thing is it seems some of the Apocrypha and the Dead Sea Scrolls might have been written while he was still alive but the uncertainty over the exact time of his life makes it hard to tell. Those Roman Catholic councils had a lot to say in what the Christian, ancient and even protestant and new age, churches would look and act. Until recently the Roman Catholic church also had complete control over access to the original texts, secondary and tertiary sources, and did not let outsiders even look at them. Many more resources are now available than ever before. Scholars, both secular and religious of many faiths, are still studying many of these in search of understanding.
@@WesMordine The Old Testament was originally written in Greek, as Hebrew was no longer spoken. This was the translation used by Jesus and Paul. The Old Testament was written in Hebrew until the 2nd Century to help preserve Jewish identity.
Excellent job, Alex! My wife, Kim, and I watched this with great interest. You had asked for theories on the current location of the Ark and here's mine: I think Jeremiah likely hid the ark somewhere in the hidden chambers below the Jerusalem temple before the Babylonians invaded the city. There are still areas below the temple grounds that have not been opened or explored due among other things to the sensitivity of the Dome of the Rock. I wouldn't be surprised if the Ark is eventually found as further exploration is done there.
From the perspective of a pastor, I REALLY appreciate the care you took in this video, and your respect for both Christians and Jews who hold the item in such high esteem. As an avid fan of Indiana Jones, I am LOVING these videos. Keep them coming!

Honestly this is really cool. You should do a video explaining the Flying Wing seen in the Ark and it's real world connection to the Horten Brother's designs.
The Ark is last mentioned at 2 Chronicles 35:3 when King Josiah returned it to the temple. The Ark may have been removed by Josiah’s apostate predecessor, Manasseh, who put an image in the temple. Or perhaps the move had been for safekeeping during Josiah’s temple renovations. (2 Chronicles 33:1, 2, 7; 34:1, 8-11) What became of the Ark thereafter is a mystery, for it is not listed among the objects taken from the temple when the Babylonians conquered Jerusalem.-2 Kings 25:13-17.
I've been following this channel for awhile as a big star wars nerd, but as someone that works at a church I really appreciate the respect you brought to the subject. I'm so used to people at the very least throwing in negative comments, it's nice to have someone talk about it without adding them.

If videos for all 4 movies are popular, maybe move to the video game and do one on Atlantis too?
transition? haven't you heard that Indiana Jones is actually Han Solo dreaming while frozen in carbonite? it's all the same universe, from a certain point of view ;)
Correct. #CatholicsForTheWin It's also why we believe that when Jeremiah says that the Ark won't be revealed until the time God chooses means the New Covenant (Jesus) and the New Ark (Mary). That is why it is not as important that the old Ark is found since we are now under a new covenant.
I’m absolutely loving these Indiana Jones Explained videos! I love the fact that this is based in historical fact. I personally love exploring Biblical history and that’s is another reason why Indy fascinates me. Thanks again Alex for this new series!
There actually is a IRL connection between Tanis and the Ark. The Pharaoh Shishak sacked Jerusalem in the 10th century. Some people believe that this is also a point where the Ark may have disappeared from record. His capital where he ruled was Tanis. Of course, we have no proof of this, but it's interesting that they went this route. Apologies if this was already said in a different way in the video. EDIT: Yes, it was.
The fact that the old Hebrew testament describes in detail the measurements, that it’s build of acacia wood and gold plated, it’s ornaments, how it should be carried and what clothes to wear. Really suggests that it did in fact exist!
Hey Alex, a couple things. First, the Ark carried the second set of stone tablets of the 10 Commandments. Moses destroyed the first, then God wrote them again on tablets Moses provided. Second, it also carried the rod of Aaron that had blosemed as well as the Bread of the Presence. Third, Second Maccabees is considered Scripture for Catholics and there is a Catholic Church built on Mt. Nebo, so many of us do believe it still remains hidden there.

Thanks for making this interesting and informative video
I've been following this channel for awhile as a big star wars nerd, but as someone that works at a church I really appreciate the respect you brought to the subject. I'm so used to people at the very least throwing in negative comments, it's nice to have someone talk about it without adding them.
I like the idea it is sitting in some US Army warehouse lost forever in a bureaucratic quagmire
Thank you for the video Sir! You're a great researcher please apply to more franchisees when you have time 👍
Yes! More Indiana Jones Explained!!!!!!!
Great video ! Good refresher on my sunday school lessons from years ago. But everyone is wrong . The kree stole it from hydra and the last season of agents of sheild will show the team traveling to find it. ( ok thats a rumor i made up . but be cool tie in to marvel and indiana jones. I forgot dash rendar joins the team during the quest . ( for the right price )

If one studied the life of King Solomon carefully it would explain a great many things about what happened to Ark…….
Despite not really liking the movie, I do look forward to seeing you cover the Crystal Skulls.
The Holy Grail might be a bit more tricky. When it fist appeared in de Troyes' Perceval it was simply a magic artifact. Later Arthurian legend expanded on it greatly, but there's several different versions.
If videos for all 4 movies are popular, maybe move to the video game and do one on Atlantis too?
Well, I'm not sure exactly where it might be, but I can assure you that we have top men working on it right now... Top. Men.
That was very informative and interestingly fascinating! i could actually listen to you go into biblical history all day XD
Great video Alex 🙂
It’s fun hearing some biblical history information from this channel
These videos are super awesome and I’m glad you’re now doing Indiana Jones videos!
omg that transition into star wars to Indiana Jones!!! dude that was brilliant!!! LOVE IT!!!!
transition? haven't you heard that Indiana Jones is actually Han Solo dreaming while frozen in carbonite? it's all the same universe, from a certain point of view ;)
I have the Ark. It's in my house, but my dad doesn't like people coming over so I can't show you I
Don’t mess with the Ark, man. It’ll melt your face off!
Ah yes this is a topic I love to think about. Thank you for making this video
We all know now that its at Dok-Ondar's Den of Antiquities
1 and 2 Maccabees are actually considered canonical in Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox bibles.
Correct. #CatholicsForTheWin It's also why we believe that when Jeremiah says that the Ark won't be revealed until the time God chooses means the New Covenant (Jesus) and the New Ark (Mary). That is why it is not as important that the old Ark is found since we are now under a new covenant.
There exist some crystal skulls all over the world.
It would be interesting to know if they are something like in the movies.
I wish we had more movies like Indiana Jones.... history inspired adventure movies are great
I think the Ark does exist as it is much to powerful to just destroy. It is kept hidden and will not be discovered for a very long time.
Wasn't there a scene in the clone wars tv series that had a twi'lek ark being loaded onto a ship?
I was very skeptical at first but really enjoyed this video ...the shot at 5:12 is one I have never seen before .
I’m absolutely loving these Indiana Jones Explained videos! I love the fact that this is based in historical fact. I personally love exploring Biblical history and that’s is another reason why Indy fascinates me. Thanks again Alex for this new series!
Just wanted to say I really liked what you did with the Indiana Jones intro
If it ever was here. It been destroyed years ago. Lost to the sands of time and fate.
The final resting place of the Ten Commandments, a direct communications line to God.
I feel "The Bible Explained" is something you could pull off XD Nice video though ;)
Great video!… That’s an amazing amount of research you did!....Thanks for posting
Glad to finally see someone talk about the REAL Ark of the Covenant, not the fictional movie one.
I always wondered what that book was that Indiana Jones show the two men that had the picture of the ark of the covenant, does anyone know?
Person: Today i’m bringing in the Ark of the Covenant to the Pawn Stars to pay for a nice family vacation
Rick: Best I can do is $20 and i’m taking a
huge safety risk
Yep then RE-SELLS It to a Museum for MILLIONS of Dollars and RETIRES!
J.S. Connolly then Chum fills it with ice and beer and proceeds to lose it after a wild weekend in Glamis.
Just watched these movies for the first time ever a week ago. So this video is perfect timing
Thanks for the history lesson!
The Ark is stored in a government warehouse being studied by top men.
DD556 762 whom?!
Robert F Top men!
When I was younger The Indianan Jones movies made me want to be an archaeologist. Then I found out that reality isn't like movies... So instead I started learning how to make movies
We don't know where the ark is located because the folks that made the movie didn't tell us where that damn warehouse was. I'm heartsick!
Isn't it basically revealed in Kingdom to be Area 51?
