Joining MustyGuitar's Patreon was the BEST decision I've made in 2024... after getting the right gear, i have started learning & playing my favorite songs with the RIGHT TONES... sounding like David Gilmour, because I was able to easily find short videos which clearly show the amp & pedal settings... but there's much more... there is SO MUCH TO EXPLORE!!! $51... are you kidding me?!?
From my understanding, the Gilmour sound is mostly in the fingers/phrasing(vibrato/bends not what Musty Means). Next comes compression. Then delay. Then overdrive. Then fuzz or big muff. Then a Stratocaster/single coil pickups. Those are the key parts. I own a Squire Affinity Strat, a Zoom G1x4, and a Fender Rumble Bassman 40 watt amp, and I'm getting most, if not all David Gilmour tones. I started playing in January 2023 and I've learned a lot from Musty, but mostly by ear. But Musty is right. Tones mostly comes from gear. Thanks for these videos Musty.

There’s no question that Musty’s channel is a superb scholarly resource for all things relating to David Gilmour’s guitar style. However, listening to the emphasis on practising particular songs, solos or techniques hundreds of times, I felt a qualm. I formed and fronted a successful tribute band to Free. Paul Rodgers was an is a vocal hero of mine. But, despite the hundreds of times I’ve listened to or performed certain songs, a point came when I recognised that no two voices are the same and anyway, I wanted to write, record and perform my own own songs. The same principle applies to guitar playing, I think. If your aim is to imitate DG as closely as possible then it’s true that huge amounts of practice may be necessary. But in some people this will activate a disabling kind of perfectionism. I suspect that, if DG had tried with all his might to sound like (say) Jimmy Page, he wouldn’t have developed into his style so fully. I suppose the conclusion is, learn what you need for whatever your purpose is then move on.
We're all here because of the time and work you put into learning these songs and tones. Don't feel like you are bragging by saying how much you do to be able to sound incredible
Eh, idk about the gear stuff. You have to imagine that if you give gilmour any type of guitar with any sort of effects and gear it will still sound like him. Sure, gear brings you close because it can offer you the immersion you need to actually hone your phrasing and fingers and note choice and all that. The gilmour sound isn't in the "colour" of the tone but rather the note choice, the phrasing and the mindset. Idk if that made any sense lmao but I absolute love that there are more people like me out there absolutely fascinated and consumed by how different Gilmour sounds from any other guitarist. Good job!
Great video. Patreon Member. So I am in a PF cover band and you have helped me tremendously. Can you look at the Friedman BE OD pedal for Time into BD2? It sounds amazing! I actually bought the Jam Phrase and Friedman I think nails it better. It's NOT an Overdrive. The gain can be adjusted to make it between Distortion and Fuzz.
I find that the Lace Sensor pickups in my Strat get me pretty close to Gilmour’s tones as well as my Boss OD-1X for his drive tones, I was also really happy with the fuzz tones I got from my EHX Big Muff Pi but after buying my EHX Ram’s Head Big Muff last summer that’s gotten me way more spot-on and I still love it (also my MXR Phase 90 and Uni-Vibe instantly get me those iconic Shine On/Have A Cigar/Comfortably Numb and DSOTM Breathe/Time/Us & Them tones and I couldn’t help happier with them)
I love Gilmour's sound, and I know it is absolutely a strat sound. I'm just more of a Gibson player, although I do own a strat. Great video, I'll give a go! And I do slide into the HUGE bend for another brick in the wall solo, mostly because I don't like to break my strings, not that I can't do it LOL
I own a Tagima Memphis MG32 stratstyle, with stock caps (cheap ones) and I'm trying to get gilmour tones. I was learning Time solo and playing it with a Mosky Mini Muff, a Demonfx Tube Screamer boosting the Muff; a Caline Simon Super Delay (analog mode), and a Flamma Reverb FC02 (hall mode).. all that plugged in a Hartke GR30 (30 watts 1x12 speaker). The sound I'm getting is nice, but I find it's not there yet.. Maybe with a better caps and a little more practice.. These chain effects is right? Or is there some pedal missing or not needed?? In time, this channel is the best for Gilmour tones on TH-cam!!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻
I have the gear, ive learned a lot from you and Bjorn, my main problem is, i never learned how to play using a pick 😂 im curious to record myself to see how much of a difference it will be... for instance, im learning Have a cigar right now, and i guess certain parts of the main solo will not be the same without using a pick.
volume is always at max for lead stuff, on a vintage style pickups, tone knobs are mostly maxed, on EMG pickup, SPC depends on the song and EXG is always off.
In terms of boosting, Is it bad to boost with a bd2 going into a big muff because I've heard some people saying you should not have a buffer going into a fuzz (as all bosses have buffer)? I think it sounds better having bd2->green russian but I would quite like your opinion on this
Buffer before fuzz is only a problem with fuzzface type circuits, it's fine with muff. The "boost before vs after muff" question is basically up to taste. DG has done it both ways, and after is more common AFAIK, but depends on other factors so just go with what sounds good to you in your particular setup.

The one main important reason you don't sound like gilmour... is that your not David Gilmour.. you can have all the effects and gear that you want ... you don't have his fingers ..but you're a very talented player and sound great 👍

Man I totally understand you. I really do. Look at me with all the pedals in the world but I remember when I got my first pedal, I had to work a month to afford it years and years ago. It only got worse for my country xD Anyway, unfortunately, I don't have much experience with digital stuff. All I know is, Guitar Rig is not very good for my taste. All you need to sound like gilmour is a clean amp, maybe a compressor, fuzz face and delay, along with 200-300ug of acid
