  • The original Marshall pedals from the late 80's and early 90's have attracted a cult following, commanding huge prices on the used market today. It consisted of the Blues Breaker, Drive Master and Shred Master as well as the pedal that was the forerunner to these being the Marshall Guv'nor. But are they any good?

    Well... I guess Marshall listened!
Each of these pedals have been reissued since this concise and informative video was produced. I just ordered the reissued BluesBreaker (for a reasonable price!) and should have it in a few days. Anybody with interest should buy these UK manufactured pedals now before they might start manufacturing overseas...

I am from the olden times, i.e., Gen X. When the Guv'nor came out, the thing we all wanted was valve preamps in rack form. The Guv'nor seemed pretty much like a pedal version of Marshall's much cheaper solid state preamps. Even the colour scheme was the same (black with white fonts until those preamps switched to gold). Guitar Player magazine told us rack gear was the way to go, so it's what we wanted. ADA MP1 with an Alesis Quadreverb etc. The pedal craze did not kick off until well after 2000.
Back then I did not even own a pedal, but had a Marshall JMP-1 valve preamp and matching power amp, plus a custom shop Gibson Les Paul. I did not like the JMP-1 though and traded it for a Digitech preamp that had cool sounding lead tone presets. I did not know the JMP-1 needed .... ummm ...... pedals (it needed to be boosted by an overdrive like an amp does). Duh. Lol.

US player here from the 80’s: Everything you stated in this vid is 100% spot on! We pretty much avoided the Marshall pedals completely… all while purchasing all types of Marshall amps and cabinets like they were gold. I’ve owned more Marshall heads, cabs and combos than I care to remember. When we purchased pedals they were almost exclusively Boss, DoD, or the Tube Screamer… later it turned more towards boutique brands. But for sure, the Marshall pedals were frowned upon as a “gimmick”
I *AGREE* however that Marshall is missing a golden opportunity here… as players today are opting for excellent pedals and moving away from amps creating their sound exclusively. Amp modeling, DAW wizardry and all sorts of signal chain enhancements are shaping sounds more than amps in 2022… Marshall has a window here to really become influential in a way that Marshall knows how to do really well.

Great video! Very influential line of pedals. For many years I used Visual Sound's Jekyll & Hyde as my main metal distortion. Well, the Hyde side of it is based on the Shredmaster (the Jekyll side is a tube screamer).

Well, beside some boutique pedals, I still have and use the Jackhammer JH-1 on my pedalboard. So cheap even back then. And it sounds just great. Overdrive as well as the distortion section. So, yeah. Marshall kinda did some great things besides their amps.

Yes Marshall needs to re-release these pedals again, made in England of course, no Chinese junk. So tired of that...The Bluesbreaker pedal sounds way better than Clapton ever did. This pedal sounds real good and is by far the most expensive of these Marshall pedals now. Check out how it sounds on Johan Segeborn's channel for example.

@@JasonAyalaSpare is there really a difference in the mid range between the guv and drive? Apparently they are the exact same circuit (less the effects loop). Or could the differences you are hearing maybe due to age differences in the pots, tolerances, etc? Bit torn on whether to get the guv or drive.

    Hey Jason,
I get your thoughts here in terms of bringing back the pedals, preferably in a smaller form factor.
I don't especially think that looking at overpriced second hand units is a solid enough reason to bring them back. After all there are so many clones or pedals based around these pedals at all price points these days.
What I do think may work is something more like a 'waza' version.
So, create a premium pedal made in England, that's nigh on an exact replica in terms of sound. However, sort out the form factor and perhaps add some modern tweakability, even if those were only some trim pots of some kind, allowing you to further fine tune the sounds.
Make them like special editions that are priced fairly (whatever that may be - not cheap, but not super expensive) & then watch them sell like hot cakes.🔥
    Cheers. 🎸🎸🎸

Here in the midwest we dont talk like that..You are imitating a deep south accent like Alabama or one of the other Gulf states. Besides we all know what Guv'ner is. It does not really mean "governor" it is Brit working class blue collar slang for some "guy", "dude", etc. You forget a lot of us have traveled a lot and also the US has people here from every nation, so we hear a lot of different terms and slang at times, and of course popular English made movies like Snatch, Lock Stock 2 Smoking Barrels, etc..
