Kia made a real splash with its e-Niro electric car back in 2019, but things move fast in the electric car world.
While the e-Niro was based on a car that also came in hybrid and plug-in hybrid forms, the EV6 is the first of Kia's new range of bespoke electric cars.
It uses Hyundai-Kia's new E-GMP electric car platform as shared with the new Hyundai Ioniq 5, and like that car there's 800v charging and vehicle-to-grid capability - so you can boil a kettle using the car's battery, if you wish.
Is this going to be another Kia best-seller? Nicki Shields gives you the walkaround tour.

Great looking car. Korean cars are following the path of their TVs. Twenty years ago they weren't the best and were cheap. Now premium and becoming close to being the go to choice.

@@joey-pn3xe That's a good point out. Generally, Koreans don't want to stick with their originality nor identity. They think the best is the best, the good is the good. That is the reason why they have generally accepted mixed culture. If the someone is the best in that field, Korean company would offer a good playground for him or her. you can find the evidence from the aggressive design of IONIC 5, EV6 even Genesis.

Never thougt I would say this when I first saw the Ioniq 5 a few months ago, but I think this looks even better, both inside and out. The South Koreans are on a roll.... I think designwhise nothing comes close, not the Ariya, not the ID4,... (in fact nothing the Germans have on offer in this price bracket). I do like the Aptera better, though (if you can live with just a two seater).

Road show very, very soon 😊 Hope to see one on my drive around October this year, Best looking new EV release this year in my eyes. On the HVAC the knobs either end are real rotary knobs for the temperature in HVAC mode and volume and tuning in media mode. Saw the car yesterday, Sat' 10th July and it is really impressive. Glad I have mine on order already, I think the wait is going to be long from this point on.

Regarding this new generation of 800v designed from the ground up vehicles ... is it easier to replace the batteries? Just asking cos I have an 11 year old Leaf and the max range is now half. Maybe batteries degrade less these days or there is smart charging that prolongs the life of the batteries. Great channel, many thanks, Chris

It's clear to me that Kia was benchmarking against the Ford Mustang Mach-E rather than any of the others you mentioned at the end. Shape, performance, trim lines up through GT, it's all there. This is the first EV (to be) available in the U.S. that has made me question my plan to get a Mach-E next year. Still leaning Mach-E, but it's a close call.

Looks great, but what about the issue of the 12 volt battery that has plagued many EV’s, especially Kia and Hyundai models. Hopefully something radically improved, especially given the idea of powering external devices like kettles! Also strongly question the wisdom of not having a heat pump except on the most expensive model. A heat pump for me is much more valuable and useful than stuff like Lane keep assist which has only worked well in limited circumstances.

Isn't it crazy that the old-fashioned lead acid 12v battery is the one that seems to cause electric car owners so many problems? The power for the 'kettle plug' on EV6 is taken from the traction battery so should be OK.

The only EV I'm aware of problems with the 12V battery is the ID3, and these problems have been fixed in the meantime.

The ID4 and IONIQ 5 are SUVs. Too mainstream/family/boring. The EV 6 is interesting. Hope they keep the option of "smaller" wheels as you move up the line. Trade off, as always, between wet/snow and dry performance. Once upon a time 18" was a large wheel. And do please compare the EV 6 to the BMW i4 (AWD versions). Nice overview.

That charge door looks very vulnerable… easy to brush up against…

Can't you say that to just about any door on a gasoline or electric vehicle?

I really like the EV6, and think it's even more appealing than the Hyundai Ioniq 5, with its diagonal slash down the sides. Instead of calling them siblings, I think they're more like… cousins. The EV6 is sportier rather than boxy, and has a lot of features that even leapfrog Teslas -like the connector to run other electronics and appliances, and the 7-year 100K warranty. The frunk (or froot) is rather small, but sufficient. One thing I don't like… are its front-to-back cupholders, They are one of my pet peeves. Driver and passenger sit side-to-side, so make their drinks similarly accessible. Personally, I now have an aversion to so many buttons, knobs, levers, etc. I'll be curious to see an actual test-drive that reports on its handling, acceleration, quietness, visibility, etc. Good job, Nikki! You are a very observant, thoughtful reviewer.

Reminds me of the Hyundai Veloster, but the EV6 is much better from any angle. I still hate the Veloster for replacing the beautiful Hyundai Coupe.

Nice but the achilles heel with all evs is the charging network. Only one manufacturer continues to resolve that problem. That's why my next ev will remain a tesla.
