Taking a close look at the quality level of Glycine now that it's become such a discounted brand post-Invicta. Is Glycine still a peer with established swiss brands such as Longines or Hamilton? Is it a good deal at discount?

As an avid collector of Glycine for decades and owning most every pre-Invicta Airman model produced, I’m struggling to see the point of this video. Clearly “bronze” was a key topic and mentioned repeatedly. Clearly, you prefer the Longines to the post-Invicta Combat Sub. But, your assertion that Glycine as a brand, may be “a scam”, based on babblings about these two pieces only, is absurd. You completely avoided models like the Airman 17/18, as well as earlier offerings from Glycine. I have several 17’s, two of which have an accuracy level that exceeds most regulates pieces. One maintains a constant +3 sec/month, on the wrist and once measured slightly better, when checked in chronometer testing. Rare ?, yes. Will they all do that ? , of course not. But I could put it beside the Longines, put them through COSC certification, mention the case finish 15-20 times and pose the question - “Is Longines a Scam ?” If the point is the post-Invicta watches, then accurately compare pre/post versions of several models. Or, simply say “$399 Post-Invicta Combat Sub vs $1200 Longines Hydroconquest”. But to compare my hand built, limited edition D24’s against everything on your video, then assert “scam ?” on the others, would be irresponsible at best. As for the flaws you cite with the Sub, I suspect that if Glycine adopted Longines pricing, those “flaws” would go away. Conversely, lower the price of the Longines to $399 and watch the “flaws” appear.

Wait, so you're trying to see if the quality of Glycine has suffered since the acquisition, yet you don't compare an older model pre-Invicta Glycine (say a 2015 model) with a newer one? Glycine has been under Invicta for about 3 years now....and pretty much every legit Glycine watch review I've seen posted on TH-cam in the last year or more has been for the most part positive. As far as pricing, as long as someone thinks they are getting a good deal for a Swiss automatic and likes the quality for the price, it doesn't matter what price is paid. The question should be this: Is the ~ $1,100 price difference between the Longines vs. Glycine worth it?

Joe Lombardi You make some valid points Joe. I have collected Glycine for a long time and own most every Airman produced pre-Invicta. I had a hard time understanding the point of this video, other than “bronze” said too many times to count and he likes the Longines over the Glycine, for reasons no one could follow. I was completely exhausted after watching this. It was so redundant and sounded like an insurance seminar. But, I have a Combat that is superb. Also, I got very lucky with one of my Airman 17 versions. It is an older piece, but has accuracy beyond any auto I own (+3 sec/month) on wrist or winder. That exceed most regulated watches costing thousands.

I bought a Combat Sub from Ashford recently. I have many watches from high end to low end. This Glycine watch is a pleasure to wear and keeps almost perfect time so far. The finishes are outstanding. Invicta has kept its hands off the quality and production end of Glycine from what I can see. I enjoyed your presentation but the undertone was much too negatively biased against Glycine, imo.

Other reviewers did mentioned the QC issues, but for a $200 to $500 watch, it's expected. He should compare to brands like Spinnaker, Seiko, Islander and Phoibos.
For $200, I got a Ronda moment, sapphire crystal, screw down crown, (Screw you Luminox for your crappy crown.) and 20 atm. The lum is crappy. But I'm happy with my purchase.

For someone with a 'watch' channel, it is embarrassing that you are unaware that Sellita in fact made and assembled movements for ETA for close to 70 years. In fact, most people who actually have a clue will tell you a Sellita is more likely than not to be equal if not more reliable than the ETA equivalent since ETA's stringent quality control for their 'sub-contractor' were higher than that of their own factory.

Strange review. Compare a bronze case watch with a stainless steel one? Did you notice that the Longines has a (cheap) withe date wheel with black numbers. It should be an inverted colored one like the Glycine has. I have the Glycine bronze in blue you "reviewed". The bezel is perfect aligned and the clicks are just right with perfect grip. Not so slippery as the Longines... Did you know that the Sellita SW200-1 movement is better time keeping due to the thicker hairspring? Power reserve of the Hamilton is great, as well as time keeping, but wait until you need service.... Oh and what about the thickness of the watch? 10,6 mm. for the Glycine. Almost quarz specs. A great job... Strange review - don't know what you want to point out here.
Better compare an old Glycine with the Invicta Glycine...

Now to be clear, the swap of the movement was due to swatch group limiting who could buy the 2824. Glycine used the sw200 before the change to Invicta but unfortunately used the same numbers for their movement which made it had to determine which version was inside . Also I laugh when I hear people refer to the sw200 as a copy of the 2824. They actually produced the 2824 for eta until eta decided to produce their own movements. They made a couple of changes but continued to make the movement on the same machines that the 2824 was produced on. I just consider it to be a modified 2824. I have a glycine combat sub with the sw200 and I've been very lucky with it. Mine actually only gains between .5 and 1 second over the month with constant wear. It out preforms my Hamilton and Tissots with the modified 2824 movements.

Watches with an ETA or Sellita go for more, microbrands with less heritage go for more.
Aragon may be comparable specs wise however brand-wise it's not similar.
Emotions aside - Glycine Combat Subs are objectively the best value for money.

I wonder what it would sell for today if adjusted for inflation. I bought it 48 years ago. It still looks great and still works just as good as did in the 1970s. Definitely not what I would call a lesser quality watch.

There are lots of anecdotal reports that the older stock are of higher quality than new. However, I've not had the opportunity to personally scrutinize older pieces the way I do to post-Invicta pieces the video so I can't attest to that for certain.
Additionally there's the branding aspect of it as well - whether or not the older stock is of higher quality, the \brand\ of Glycine is firmly its new price point now. Again, purely aesthetic whether or not brand consciousness is a factor for your decision but it's something worth considering. (However getting the old logo does give it that retro cred.)

I think because you have cast this review in such a confusing and negative way that it has produced a slew of negative comments that are perhaps well deserved. But , I will attempt to take the high road. MSR pricing can be misleading. So your premise for the review may not really be all that valid. Consider that I purchased an Oris Classic Date listed for $ 1,200 from a grey market seller for $365. The Oris Aquis that lists for $ 2,000 can be had for $1200. Is there a scam going on here ? I think the question is, is the watch value for money. I believe that you have created a straw man. Wait, are YOU scamming us ? (just kidding mate).
Comparing the Combat Sub with a Hamilton Khaki Diver is a good one. The Combat Sub is probably superior watch simple based on its 200 M water resistance compared to the Hamilton's 100 M. I compared the two and purchased the Combat Sub. BOTH are entry level Swiss automatic dive watches. No one would say otherwise. On the other hand, the Hydroconquest is not a proper comparison IMO with the Combat Sub. Rather like most reviewers do, compare it with an Oris Aquis. The MSR of these watches may be slightly different , but then so is the MSR of the two most compared dive watches, the Rolex Submariner and Omega Seamaster. Now, if you have evidence that Glycine's production methods, materials, movements, quality control, etc have changed then present that evidence. Hearsay is just that.
For anyone who wishes to watch a really good review of the Combat Sub, I offer this. BTW Tristano does amazing review. Take note Chrono.Anachronist...Cheers ! th-cam.com/video/SU82WK9F4ww/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/SU82WK9F4ww/w-d-xo.html&t=10s

The title of the video is clickbaity, which is something I honestly acknowledge in the video itself. As for the comparison - again, I explicitly acknowledge that a comparison to Longines isn't entirely "fair" and is provided merely as a benchmark for the quality that's actually available at the ~$1k price point. I don't remember my exact words, but I do say that Hamilton is more Glycine's "true" competitor than Longines.
On the question of is the watch value for money - yes this is the true question, and the question is answered. It's a watch that you can get for $300-500 and it's worth about that much. I say as much in the vid.
I think people are upset because of (1) clickbait title, guilty, so fair enough, (2) it somehow comes up early when you search for Glycine watch reviews on youtube, and ultimately (3) how I frame this idea: The Glycine is an affordable watch of quality commensurate to its price, ie, not a lot. It's not a luxury watch at a cheap price. It's worth what you pay for it. If I had to put a quantitative figure to it, it'd be 3/5. Average for what it is. Not exceptional value, not terrible.
Oh also there were subjective qualities of it I disliked but even explicitly disclaiming them as subjective wasn't enough to avoid ire ;P
And I'm not ever going to try to put my videos up against TGVs - much like Longines and Glycine, we may both be reviewing watches on youtube but he's in an entirely different category than me =D

If you knew >anything< about business you'd know that having Invicta's marketing and established distribution you'd know that will probably be a good thing for Glycine. Invicta bought Glycine to regain some of the prestige that Invicta once enjoyed. I own Glycine watches from both the pre and post Invicta eras and I see no difference in the quality of the watch. Did you ever think that having access to more resources might allow Glycine to innovate more? I'd rather see Glycine survive and prosper under Invicta's umbrella than watch it disappear. Count your blessings. If you don't like it then don't buy it. It's just that simple.

(Also some aesthetic things about this model specifically I didn't like, but that stuff again I explicitly disclaim as subjective. There's plenty of wrist shots and footage of these combat subs out there, you can make your own judgment on that.)

So, in your opinion, if for example Sinn or Oris should be bought by Invicta, the watches should be of a lower quality? Your video is nothing more that a clickbait IMHO.

    • @grymckr
      @grymckr  4 ปีที่แล้ว

If Invicta purchased Sinn + Oris and the watches suddenly started being sold for far less money than before, then I think it would be reasonable to *suspect* the quality may have suffered and ask the question, yes.

This guy is saying “Lawn jeans” and expects to be taken seriously. The hand looks like plastic? And the lume glows when it shouldn’t? You’re also talking about styling cues, not quality. You’ve managed to post one of the most comically petty comparisons I’ve seen.

Clickbait. Yes, Invicta is a cheap Made in China watch brand with shady marketing practices. On the other hand, Glycine continues to be a Swiss brand with quality Swiss-made watches and proprietary movements.

Dude, no offense, but your review is extremely subjective ... e.g. cheap red plastic second hand on the Glycine? Have you read on what really is made off? Go back and do some research again.

Me, repeatedly in the video: "So aesthetics are obviously subjective, but here's what I think..."
The comments section: THAT'S JUST YOUR SUBJECTIVE OPINION THOUGH

I think new glycine watches are made with Invicta watch parts. I have some Invicta watches so Im not a hater but it is deceptive if it says swiss but made in china.

A lot of BS here. WTF are you on about with lume having to be white? And lume is SUPPOSED to glow. You seem to confuse your design preferences with quality. Also, any watch collector can assess value vs MSRP in terms of specifications, tactile quality and cost. How about we put a POSITIVE spin on this? Maybe look at it this way…”Wow, an ETA 2824-derived Swiss automatic movement, historic name brand, super luminova, sapphire crystal, bronze case, classic 200m dive watch for less than $500? What did Invicta ownership do to make this possible? Well done!”

One of the most pointless watch videos ever. Comparing an old Glycine with a post Invicta one could have made some sense but this video made none. Click bait title about a scam is infuriating. What a waste of my time. Longines? Really?

Seems to be a lot of fanboys in the comments section. The watch brand is owned by a joke company now, so that makes Glycine a joke company by proxy as well. Don't hate the guy for shedding light on the obvious. We'll see how badly the quality drops in the next years
