They just awarded a federal discrimination lawsuit as well. Funny thing is, this isn't the first time with similar situations making national headlines. Except that time it was the dude's paycheck and the bank tried trespassing him after to pull a CYA after failing to verify the check for 30 minutes after calling police. I foresee a bank manager and employee being unemployed very soon.
When I was a manager and there was a question about a check, the FIRST person to call is the owner of the account. Rarely does it go beyond that. The ONLY WAY we would ever call the police is if the owner of the check said the check was stolen or altered and they wanted to press charges. This bank clearly broke policy.

Sometimes you have to read between the lines. It sounds like the remember was an old person first of all this still using checks but the checks she was using was a very very old check that went back before they change the bank logo and a change of routing number. So anyone could have been on the other side of that phone call if that was a professional fraud being conducted. Nevertheless, that was the protocol and the branch manager did not follow the protocol. If he followed the protocol he would not have been in trouble even if it was a fraud. The branch manager was too busy trying to facilitate an arrest. A case like that is worth about $30,000 if it's settled out of court. If the bank is foolish enough to bring it to court there likely to lose $250,000
That bank is absolutely done…. You should have called immediately and discussed it with the bank member. Then you would have got the answers without incident. Absolutely terrible
I call BS. The routing and account number are both at the bottom of the check, and they matter more than an old logo. I have checks going back years as I don't write many checks anymore. Too easy to verify this.
@builderbob26 that is a BS excuse though, my old commerce bank checks has the same exact routing and account numbers as my TD bank checks, and I used them without any issues (Commerce bank was acquired by TD bank).
According to the article I read before seeing the video. The bank’s president stated the branch manager “apologized for the mix up”. So I don’t see terminated for the manager anytime soon. I think it’s a damn shame.

Did anyone notice that when the bank employee called police they said “Someone just tried to cash a fake check”. This has nothing to do with being diligent bank staff, he was racially profiled and deemed guilty from the start even before verifying the credentials of the check. Shame on this bank, every person is a person and should be treated with dignity and respect above all else.

The bank can easily hold the check for a day for confirmation. They do this sometime if you don't have an account there. There is no need to call the police.

OK, here's the problem. He has no real damages. He was detained while the police investigated and it came out that the cheque was legitimate. He was released. It doesn't look like the police hurt him, it looks like he was treated well by the police. And I'm guessing once it was all cleared up, the manager cashed the cheque. Interesting that banks think they have to question any deposit. I got a sizeable profit from selling my house and the bank wants to interrogate me over it. I got a sizeable disability check from the government agency I worked for and the bank (a different one) felt they had to question me about it. My response to the bank people was that the deposit was a direct deposit from the government agency I had worked at for 20+ years. Why is it any of their business what the money is for? They said it is a "law" that they have to question large deposits. I asked for the code for that particular "law" and they could not give it to me.
I'm a high up at a credit union, not the one in the video. You would be surprised at the amount of fraud that we have to catch. My credit union lost $15,000 to one fraudster last year. If we're not overly cautious, the fraudsters will kill us. But what matters here and shows me that this credit union is poorly managed is that they released an impersonal non-apology apology. At my CU, if we did this to someone they would be getting a call from either myself or our CEO and receiving #1 a personal apology and admission of wrong doing, plus we would have cut a cashiers check for the same amount of his other check and gave it to him. Literally putting our money where our mouth is. I know we would do this, because we have. Last year we had a loss prevention member recover funds from a members account that we had agreed not to touch. Because we did that, the member went negative and racked up over $250 in overdraft charges. Not only did we refund the member for the fees, we also covered 100% of the transactions that she made from the time WE made the mistake, to the time WE fixed OUR mistake. Cost us around $600 in total. The word of mouth advertising that she has done for us since that event has easily made up for that measly $600.
Oh yeah this happened to me before with a cashier's check. I cancelled my account & went somewhere else where I was treated better & they had better products.
It makes me wonder how close I was to dealing with law enforcement on one occasion. My Father had passed away in Puerto RIco and left me some money. A few thousands of dollars. My mother sent it to me in a Cashiers Check from the main bank in the island. The name of the bank and some other information was in Spanish. The routing number and account number matched what American banks use. The cashier initially told me that they don't deposit foreign checks. I told her that it wasn't. She got the manager to come and look at it. The manager looked apprehensive and even scared. In any case, she passed it through the scanner and it went through. The money was deposited into my account. She gave me my receipt and the look that she had was of someone that thinks that they just did something illegal like launder money. The fact is that since it was a check from a US Bank and that there was a digital trail, it couldn't be money that was being laundered. I am a red head and freckle face. Had I looked differently who knows what would have happened.
This also happened to a black female doctor at Chase Bank in Sharyland, TX and another black customer at a Wells Fargo Bank. Allegedly, bank policy wasn't being enforced at the time. They are now being sued. This black man has every right to sue the Credit Union for not following bank policy. By the way, whoever didn't follow the credit union policy should be fired.
The bank should be sued for discrimination. Not only did they embarrassed themselves but didn't go the route to confirm the check was phoney. A million dollars h as a nice ring to it.
Why assume he was trying to pass a fake check and not that he had been the one that got scammed? Oh... wait... I mean, I cash bigger personal checks than that sometimes (not as often as I'd like) due to my employment. They'll verify the check every time due to the amounts. Never had an issue. But guess what I look like...
Thats actually what I thought when they said that the account number didn't matched their records. The man might’ve been scammed by the woman that bought his boat, turns out not everyone thinks that way
This is what the conversation sounded like, “hi yes police, the people who save lives everyday, we got someone trying to cash in a check that we dont know if its fake or not and instead of confirming it with the customer, called you and will be wasting your time.”
This manager should be more then demoted, he should be fired and have charges brought against him for calling 911 to begin with. Even the president said “at no time did the staff feel threatened or feel Mr. Brewer was trying to rob the credit union.” So why the F call 911 then? Plus, correct me if I'm wrong but don't banks have you sign after every transaction? So shouldn't the account holder's signature be on file for them to compare? I mean, with all this high priced sophisticated technology you would think so.
The manager who made the false report to police should be fired as a minimum. And the credit union should pay Mr. Brewer at least $10,000 for the embarrassment and humiliation that was inflicted on him. I hope he sues the crap out of them.

I said when, they "couldn't tell". I called my girl at State Farm on speaker, you could hear the introduction voice recording first then she answered. I told her where I was and what was going on. She looked up the check number, repeated it, and stated that there is no indication it had been cashed. I said I know because its still in my hand. She vehemently repeated she had never heard of such a thing in her entire career, and that if they had it recorded there was an attempt then it should be recorded that the transaction was not completed, so it was still a good check because it was the original, like I was trying to cash it again at the same bank, like who tf is that dumb.

At my CU, if we did this to someone they would be getting a call from either myself or our CEO and receiving #1 a personal apology and admission of wrong doing, plus we would have cut a cashiers check for the same amount of his other check and gave it to him. These bank employees are rarely disciplined after calling Law Enforcement as a first option instead of verifying checks or accounts. Even though an innocent person is put at risk the bank employees will continue to do so because it doesn’t effect them. The final insult was the bank manager never apologized or cashed his check that day & told him to go elsewhere.
Clearly, the bank manager should have first called the customer who wrote the check, not the police. He should be fired.
Wow! The bank's response says it all. It was a terrible response. Hopefully he sues them. It would definitely have long lasting psychological affects. I completely understand how he now feels.
1:17 an old Logo, and an Account Number and Routing Number that did NOT match their members information.
I would have informed the cops by telling them exactly that AND contact that credit union member. If the account and routing number are wrong, they can not process it anyways. Could have stolen the members phone and checkbook.
The Wrong Account Number and Routing Number are huge flags for a counterfeit check.
He wanted to deposit a check. So why didn't they just put a hold on the check for a few days until they verify the information? And like they said in the video, a simple phone call to the person who wrote the check and it all would have been cleared up. No need to call the police and waste their time and our taxpayer dollars.
This is the disturbing truth...
He went to the buyer of his boats credit union where he had no account to cash it, instead of just depositing it at his bank. He was acting dumb and trying to get paid.
And the gentleman was probably now entered into the police base. That is what really ticks me off about these dangerous 911 calls.
@@Sum-Ting-Wong71 He probably went to the Buyer's Credit Union because he needed the money right away instead of waiting days for it to clear his bank. What exactly was "acting dumb" about that? I used to do the same thing when I got my Commission checks and the Bank would call my Broker & they would cash it.
How about defamation of character, mental anguish, racial profiling, public embarrassment, failing to use proper corporate standards with a legitimate customer etc
How about most crimes committed in my city are by dark young males but everyone has to pretend its not happening cause you're called racist immediately. Why are you playing dumb.
@@helix9268 You ARE a racist, so who the cap fits...
"We employ a diverse workforce" .... WTF that thing has to do with racially profiling someone?
It's the same as saying "my friend is black" when you are arrested for being a racist person.
Precisely. This goes with any institution, body or group of people.
Diverse enough to hire even buckets of human waste. They can even make manager now. Look how far we've come. Anybody know that guy's name? I wanna call his wife.
"I have black friends"
The bank should be forced to pay a fine to both this man and the pd for wasting all of their time 😡
This is completely unacceptable! The person who called 911 should be charged with filing a false report.
That bank manager who called the police should be fired.
Funny thing is tattoos, locs and Harleys cost money so why would the bank assume that this wasn't legit? Racism, lack of training, stupidity? A lawsuit should get to the bottom of it because the bank doesn't sound too motivated. No amount of apologies are enough to make up for this type of treatment. Also why are police doing anything without their badge cams on?
Because most people that match his profile commit these types of scams and I don't think motorcycle has anything to do with it.

That's where claims like that come from,...your imagination, because you're afraid of the "boogey man" (also known as black people, to you) I'll bet you have brown eyes, 'cuz you're full of it.
All the bank would have had to do is tell him they have to verify the check, call the account holder and it would have been done long before having to call the police.
The bank is 100% at fault here.
They should cut their losses and make him a big settlement offer.
They simply made up their minds too quickly. So instead of looking for ways to confirm the check's validity, they spent their efforts looking for reasons why this was an attempt at fraud. Look, if the check was fraudulent if would be impossible to get it past the bank. So why not perform due diligence and CONFIRM the check before calling law enforcement stating the check was fraudulent?
That is public mischief, and also defamation of the person character. By not only implying that the person's a thief ,but openly and publicly naming the person a thief.
It's called racial bias. He's black, therefore he's guilty.
@@dan_hitchman007 ding ding ding.
I asked MY credit union how THEY would have handled this. They said "CASH THE CHECK" and if one of their employees ever did something like this, they would be fired with prejudice ! Guaranteed NO UN-EMPLOYMENT !
PTSD. He hasn't been inside a bank since. WTF! Once again, he should hire a good lawyer and sue the bank!
They wanted to humiliate him and assumed he was a criminal.
I hope he sues that bank!
I recently wrote a large check to a friend. My credit union called me when he came in to cash it. The entire conversation to confirm the validity of the check took less than twenty seconds.
Happens to me ALL THE TIME l swear! Good work exposing the truth!!
If he argued and insisted and resisted this could have had an even more devastating outcome. This is a travesty on so many levels.
This got to stop. I would lawyer up and sue
Not àll blacks is poor....thugs or thieves we do work hard I might add.
All those terms are just ways to make people, mostly White, to think Black people are all bad. Pretty ignorant if you ask me. This has to stop!
LOL no kidding, a handful of white dudes are currently threatening to end human civilization with a nuclear war and yer people of color are the "bad people". How crazy is that?
Yep, lawsuits bring change. That bank manager has to be living in a bubble not to have taken the steps to avoid this. Anybody would be mortified to be put through such an ordeal. It sounds like intentional affliction of emotional distress at the very least.
"Not all"?
How about "VERY FEW" ...

Sue the bank, they got money to spare
Happened to me when I tried to cash a check my mother had given me. I'm 19 or 20 at the time trying to pay my college tuition. I said my address the matches to the one on the check. I thought she was going to pee on herself. Racing around behind the counter like I had stole something. It was frightening.
I had a bank teller not want to cash a cashier's check for me. The manager asked me to come to his office while he basically went through every bank card and ID I had. They called the bank branch in WA that it was from. Then they called the account owner who sent me the check. After about 30mins I was allowed to leave with my money. All this was over a $50 check. I'm sure I was one mistaken answer or nervous twitch from having the cops called.
Banks Always winning I’ve been there my fellow human

Do you have an account with the bank? If not, they have steps that they have to go through.

It would have been wiser to keep quiet and let them arrest you. Then sue both the bank and the police. They would normally settle.
