    His humility amazes me.

What he said about his 20's, waiting for something to happen, working a job he doesn't care about, calling myself a musician but not creating, sounds like me. I'm 24, I've started many songs and just never followed through and finished them. Life is fucking finite. Hope I learn from Joe's mistake. He seems like a cool guy. Great interview folks.

Practice 6-24 hours a days listen to all types of music, jam by yourself and with peeps alot, learn theory and composition, think about your melodies all day lyrics too, it's pretty easy to record one song a week.

@@bratwurst19 Didn't see this comment before. Thanks Jason, that's solid advice. I'm getting better at writing these days and closer to getting ideas out of my head. I can't help but think about what I can gleam inspiration from every day. Thanks again 👍

Protomartyr's existence is all the reason I need to seriously consider trying to put together a band being in my late 30's. Finally creating that outlet so I can finally be creative with the end goal being because it will make me happy and give life purpose when being a guitarist/ song writer and not being in a band or writing and finishing songs is what I consider myself to be atm. I want to be able to collaborate with someone just as enthusiastic and create art and music! Even if only 2 ppl come to see us play live it doesn't matter. We do it because it gives life meaning when it didn't previously have any. Thank you Joe Casey for inspiring me. I'm positive many other's were affected the same after watching this brilliant interview.

What a clever and down to earth dude, no wonder I love their music. Protomartyr is an immense band and each album literally surpasses the previous one. Can’t wait for their next release!

What's surprising about he said in regards to writing lyrics is that they're secondary to the music, which I would've bet good money was the other way around. His lyric game is so integral to their music and it makes me appreciate the rest of the band even more since they're entrusted to write the compositions before he even adds his words to the music. From everything they've released so far, it's obviously working in their favor. Still, I'm very impressed.

I use to think the same thing. Joe also mentions the celebrity aspect possibly being the primary objective but I think both the primary focus on lyrics and celebrity lead to insincerity within the music and the artist's character. I have been trying to write music for years and at least for lyrics/vocals (once I was tired of trying to copy other bands), I could never figure out if I wanted to write the melody first, words, or even the rhythm of the vocals first. I am basically learning after all this time is that placing your notes/chords in the write place in time relative to the pitch is what writing music is all about. That's why a well written song has a groove or rhythm you can move to with lyrics that speak to you more than they sing to you, it is all natural and nothing feels forced. I imagine, what Joe is saying here is that he is placing his emotion in the vocals first, the pitch/melody/rhythm and making sure he feels it before he adds lyrics to it. This is what give the lyrics the illusion of importance and when you make them just vague enough, it leaves the lyrics open to different interpolations and flexible with time. As Joe was describing, the song can take on many meanings. He's a natural and it's probably why he is so chill about it (and having been humbled by Detroit).

What I find so remarkable about Joe Casey is that you can find a part of yourself in him, even if you don't have anything in common with him. He's so damn relatable in so many ways. Such an endearing artist. Every album is a gift really, as you don't know if it will be their last. Counting the days to June 2!

Such a humble, real, down to earth dude. Music, art, it is about finding meaning, trying to define or explain that meaning, if real, is difficult.

Really good interview and some considered and honest answers. In my mind Protomartyr are the best rock band around at the moment, all elements of the bands work so beautifully together. Can’t wait to see them live again

Such an articulate and truly interesting (and down to earth) guy. I can't wait to hear more of his/Protomartyr's music.
As a fan of The Fall for over 35 years, and having had the honor of seeing them and photographing them live on assignment out in San Fran in the mid 1990s, I fully understand why critics mention Mark E. Smith when talking about Joe. I find the similarities in both lyric content and delivery interesting, especially since I think Joe's lyrics and delivery came about for him organically.
It's rare I get excited about today's music. I'm grateful I recently stumbled upon Protomartyr. Better late than never.

For someone who writes such esoteric lyrics he's pretty down to earth and relatable. Seems like a cool guy to hang around with and talk about art and mythology, whatever. Maybe I like them so much because the Protomartyr St. Stephen is my namesake! :)
