here after Ultimate Success Today, please bring them back that entire album is a punch in the gut in the best ways possible. creating something unique and obviously protomartyr with influence from the raw sounds of the clash, the fall, joy division.. sounds immense
I guess it's "playing like a songwriter" more than "playing like a drummer". Never letting it become the drum show and showing restraint to let the whole thing breathe.
His style reminds me of Joy Division drummer Stephen Morris. In fact, the band as a whole is like a modern Joy Division of sorts. Don't get me wrong, Protomartyr are still very much their own thing, but to me they have deep JD roots. Drummer, Bassist, Guitar, and even Vocals and lyrics in a sense, to me anyway. Love Protomartyr, personally. Absolutely.
Love this band. Saw them open for Cloud Nothings a few months ago and they blew me away. The bass, the drums, the guitars, the singer--all so vital and memorable in the way they approach their role in the group. Under Color of Official Right is a killer record. So happy they're from my state!
just saw them in Ann Arbor last night. As Joe Casey put it, they played a mix of "old songs no one likes [off of the first album] and new songs no one knows". Hopefully we'll see a new album soon! I fucking love these guys
@@dbdmackd a year later, I’m still not sure I get the comparison? I love both The Fall and Protomartyr and think they’re equally unique and in the same league. Especially with all the new music protomartyr has released since this performance, they’ve proven to be the best “new” “post punk” band despite the huge influx of British post punk (a lot of which is very popular but sucks to my ears, bunch of copycats). To me, protomartyr produces music that, like the fall, stands on its own. Sure I hear Nick cave/bad seeds, joy division, maybe some of fall, but they are on the same level as those bands because they made something authentic and unique in a music field dominated by hacks, wannabes and copycats.
Took me ages to get into Protomartyr...then one day iggy pop played 3 protomartyr tracks on his 6 music show and wow...never looked back. I had a good chat with Joe at EOTR festival in 2018, top bloke.
Geezus did you hear the drums on that last song? That’s really cool 😎 makes me proud to be a tall white guy with a receding hairline who can barely carry a tune but can still be a rock star on attitude alone.
I'm going out in EEehh Lol, dont get carried away, Joe is one of the deepest lyricists I've seen. You can tell he reads a lot, from the Bible to Hangover Square. You won't find a superficial Protomartyr track, at least in the 2 last records.
Love that transition into the second upbeat track. These guys are very punk, wouldn't sound out of place at a gig in Australia in the early 80s with The Birthday Party or The Scientists.
Saw these guys play in Beijing last Friday (6/15). Awesome band. Show absolutely rocked. Definitely go see them. Very nice guys, too. Thanks for the music.
Why can't KEXP ever show the whole band? Or even all of an individual performer? It's not even easy to figure how many performers are in a band sometimes. They should fire the art school graduates and hire an amateur to film bands.
Kind of annoys me when bands are generally interviewed like that. Almost as though the "front man" is the only one there. Not to say that I don't enjoy hearing what Joe Casey has to say!
It's intentional. In case you haven't noticed, sometimes vocalists employ methods that aren't pitch-perfect. They do it for effect and emphasis, among other things. Or sometimes they just have an unconventional voice. Try listening to The Fall or The Jesus Lizard, and you might get a better idea of where this guy is coming from.
its kind of the vibe of the song, if it was with a different singer it would just sound like 100 other bands. do yourself a favor and NEVER listen to U.S. Maple, you'll hate them
KEXP really needs to bring these dudes back for an in-studio. It's been nearly 9 years...
Hell yeah.
I was about to wrrite this!
It happened!!

This drummers style is so creative and refreshing. He plays for the song and with so much discipline. Not easy to do.
I guess it's "playing like a songwriter" more than "playing like a drummer".

Love Protomartyr, personally. Absolutely.
That 'too cool for school' vibe coming from the singer is actually... quite cool. Protomartyr has one of the albums of the year, too good
They are one of the most urgent things happening in music right now. Phenomenal.
fantastic set. It's time to bring them back KEXP!, so much good stuff released by them between now and when this was recorded.
Love this band. Saw them open for Cloud Nothings a few months ago and they blew me away. The bass, the drums, the guitars, the singer--all so vital and memorable in the way they approach their role in the group. Under Color of Official Right is a killer record. So happy they're from my state!
Agree about the record. My favourite record this year
T. Alfred Dahlen
My favorite record of 2014 as well, what a gem!!
ALBUM OF THE YEAR
Everything this band has done has been absolutely killer. Super solid group.
I love this band. They've got sort of a Joy Division/Gang of Four/Mission of Burma feel that is right up my wheelhouse.
They really steam up my gut box
Yep to all that. But also Howard DeVoto era Buzzcocks
And The Clash
love this band, the singer has got such a Mark E. Smith vibe I honestly thought they were a British band for so long.
just saw them in Ann Arbor last night. As Joe Casey put it, they played a mix of "old songs no one likes [off of the first album] and new songs no one knows". Hopefully we'll see a new album soon! I fucking love these guys
Saw these guys tonight, they were frighin awesome... reminded me a lot of The Fall.
Beat me to it, by five years.

Took me ages to get into Protomartyr...then one day iggy pop played 3 protomartyr tracks on his 6 music show and wow...never looked back. I had a good chat with Joe at EOTR festival in 2018, top bloke.

detroit's best band.

This is some good post-punk
It’s never too late
Thanks for this
I heard this band last week, and it's already on KEXP!, keep doing great work guys.
Geezus did you hear the drums on that last song? That’s really cool 😎 makes me proud to be a tall white guy with a receding hairline who can barely carry a tune but can still be a rock star on attitude alone.
You and me both buddy. You and me both.
I'm going out in EEehh

it's good that you bring in some real bands every once in a while at least..great band..
Saw these guys play in Beijing last Friday (6/15). Awesome band. Show absolutely rocked. Definitely go see them. Very nice guys, too. Thanks for the music.
Solid performance! What not to love about them?
just love this band
Awesome band
Like an aggressive Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse vocal wise. That's what i'm feelin here.
Ha I'm getting Isaac Brock goes Joy Division vibe
I fuckin love this.
giving editors vibes and Idles vibes. love it
he wasn't lying when he said he was gonna be mumbling for that one song
I'm stoked to see them in Bloomington.

¡Hey amigo! Sí te interesa tengo algunas canciones de Protomartyr subtituladas.
Coward Starve it's a great fucking song!
Agent intellect is good from start to finish
woo wah wah wooo wa woooo woooo. more vibrato!
This band rips
this singer is a cross between tim heidecker and the singer from US Maple
in a good way
elektriccobra hahaha I was just thinking about how much he reminds me of Tim Heidecker.... I love this band.
+elektriccobra I thought it was John Belushi in Blues Brothers for a moment
I give this performance 5 bags of popcorn!
Great to hear Cowards Starve with made up lyrics!!
Maidenhead is my song
this band is So Good!!😱
Great stuff....
Hi, I fucking love protomartyr, im a fan since three o four years ago.
I need to know what pedals and gear Greg use. please.. anyone knows? Thanks!
Greg is the guitar.
I know it has been 2 years but if you ever need to know what gear an artist uses go to equipboard.
i actually live in maidenhead woop
Same.
The drummer is the great grandson of Elmore Leonard whose book was adapted to Tarintinos movie Jackie Brown.
For real?
Does anyone else find it hard to reconcile live Protomartyr with studio Protomartyr? I think they sound very different
joy divicion 3.0
BILL MURRAY?!
Such sexy guitar lines.

lol what's with this HORSESHIT about dissing the singer
PREACH.
Need to get Jessica Hernandez from Detroit on KEXP, great singer...
Where can I get the track listing?
Oh nvm
What The Wall Said..... Enough said
what is that drum kit pleasssee ?
You should invite Decades.
Ok Magazine quite close. Not even close
Shades of "The Shins", "The Smiths" and "The National".
How does his vocal style not get compared to Mark E. Smith, like all the time? I do like them both! Mostly because they both sound drunk and lazy.
they sound like The Editors
is there some medical condition that stops this guy from taking off the sunglasses?
kind of. he actually has really bad stage fright.
so noting that, you can see when he turns his head that he has his eyes closed.
Leone Simba a bad case of radness
singing live is not easy at all
bluesbrothersitis
I wish the singer would sing with a bit more conviction. the album is amazing. he is amazing.
Oh, they're geezers
This band would be so much better without the singer !

aninfiniteregress Country Teasers, too.
Pablo = eejit
+Pablo Medina Congratulations you played yourself. How can you listen to post-punk and complain about these type of vocals
singer needs vocal training.
Does Mark E Smith needs vocal training too?
You need emotional training.
Rico Horton vocal training, instrumental training, good guitars, record to Abbey and shit without soul in the end? sorry . my english is bad
+progressMAN89 very good answer
useless to argue. such people are watching "American Idol."Anthony Flores
