This is from the final episode of State of the Art, a series of documentaries about the visual arts in the 1980s.
Filmed in Europe, the United States and Australia in 1985-6, the six programmes feature many key artists including -- in addition to Basquiat and Warhol -- Cindy Sherman, Antony Gormley, Hans Haacke, Eric Fischl and Joseph Beuys. The films also explore the intellectual context of the time and the ideas of post-modernism.
The series was originally seen on Channel 4 in Britain, and then shown in more than 20 countries.

I don’t understand why people are saying these guys aren’t “real artists,” what should they be doing painting a really detailed picture of something? Art is different for everyone.

@@rsrchfldr7997 I mean I guess you're technically right, but first of all, that's not modern art, that's a friggin cave from centuries ago; secondly, of course, you can say 'artistry has been very much present', but that's because those South African's were painting themselves, it's not exactly the mainstream modernistic art in society that Basquiat was addressing was it?; thirdly, looking at modern art and the eras surrounding it, there's definitely a scarcity of black portrayal.

Andy wurhol took a photograph of Marilyn Monroe that he didn't create in the first place and covered it in a colour scheme that a 3 year old would have chosen in finger painting class in school. Then the image was classed as copyright in a court room (possibly in New York) and the court case decided that the image was not a creation but simply a doctored image of someone's work, or in other words not an artist but someone simply sick in the mind.

An alcoholic that simply dripped paint onto canvas with no clear thought on what the painting would be and all he created was something a 2 year old would have done with pots of children's paints while sitting at the kitchen table while his mother was cooking dinner. Not an artist but someone simply sick in the mind.

I’d never seen Basquiat in video footage before talking and seeing him with Warhol shows just how perfect both Jeffery Wright and David Bowie we’re portraying them in film. The movie is so underrated.
problem with the movie is it failed (maybe on purpose) to truly portray basquiat's political views and such, they only focused on his mannerisms. its a watered down version of the whole story

I got the impression that he didn't like the way that arrangement subtly conveyed the white guy in the suit sort of "lording" it over his "subjects". Not only did it belittle him as a black man, but it belittled Warhol, too, as if saying artists are lower in the hierarchy, too. Basquiat even says, "do you have to be rubbing on his", like, "get your hands off me, I'm not property." My take.

exactly!! basquiat was the real star. warhol was irrelevant at this time in his career, he needed a boost and basquiat came in at the right time. yes, warhol contributed a lot for the pop art world but also was a opportunist leech. i still fucks with Warhol's art tho. but Basquiat still the 🤴🏾
@@809Muzic I can't guess at Warhol's motives because he definitely took a shot backing Basquiat at a time when the art world was quite racially myopic (still is in many ways). Basquiat was willing to deal with the mistreatment from the media & art society to get ahead. Unfortunately, this exhibition backfired yet it paved the way for partnerships, sponsorships, & deals that promote contemporary artists as we know it now IMHO.
I think he made his paintings to translate his feelings about the worlds judgement about him. Being brilliant and black. Nobody treated him as such. Nobody elevated him.

If you can't tell if a person did the art or a computer did it it would prove that the artist has talent, Andy warhol had no talent he was a simple retard.
It took me some time to appreciate his art but once you see it for what it really is you fall in love with it, like a modern touch with a very known and old story. I'm surprised no one made clothes out of his art, but at the same time it could be sacrilegious

RIP Tseng Kwong Chi, he was amazing photographer who you may find a bit rude in this video. But in fact he wasn't rude at all and he photographed Basquiat many times including him painting at his home studio with a cup of coffee on canvas surface.

People say it’s not real art because they are esoteric and are not meant to be understood,that’s what makes the so wonderful.
Warhol looks pissed and I think that's the beauty of this collaboration. It's doing to him what he did to art in his ultimate prime days. I think he was aware of that and probably why the collaboration was initiated. I consider them artists in their own right, but not artists of pieces that I would want hung in my house and that's ok. My eye for art has a very small pallet. To me, the story is more important than the "art" when it comes to this collaboration.
As Robert Goren (Vincent D'Onofrio) says on "Law and Order: Criminal Intent" years ago, "When it comes to art, I'm not interested in owning it; I'm interested in thinking about it." A solid and useful insight when it comes to the evaluation of art, I've found.

I feel like Basquiat standing up in the picture with the guy in the back is a sign of respect, trying to show that they are equal even though JM is a very popular artist. It almost feels like Warhol couldn’t accept this, being so contentious, given he didn’t find standing up necessary and didn’t even do it after Basquiat did. Maybe I’m overthinking this, but that clip shows Basquiat’s compassion for others perfectly

@@LeDedoubleur This was filmed in 1985, Warhol died in 1987. I don't think he meant disrespect by sitting, he was just in his own world. Basquiat was half the age of these men. Maybe he did stand to show respect but that could be overanalyzing. They were at a photo shoot and he could've just been changing positions for the photos. Warhol on the other hand was known for being very stiff and stoic.

@@LeDedoubleur Yes, this was at his gallery where Basquiat and Warhol had the exhibition of their collaborations in 1985. I was replying to you and the original post at the same time. The other person commented about Warhol being contentious because he didn't standing up when Shafrazi walked over like Basquiat did.
Andy was shot and nearly died in the late 60s. After surgery and recovery he wore a corset to keep his insides inside. He's most probably seated and not moving much for that reason.

At the time those paintings were made, Warhol was out of favor in the Art World and he needed some props. He was down to appearing in cheesy episodes of Love Boat, no one cared about his paintings much. Basquiat's star was shining and Warhol glommed onto it. As did the dealer in that clip, Tony Shafrazi. Basquiat was not stupid and knew it would all reflect good in him/propel him further. The Art World used Basquiat, and they still do, but at least he was able to use them back, to some degree, and make his point about the prejudices in the Art World which run deep. Also, at that time, those collab paintings were trashed by the Art World, and by critics, and were considered failures. It has taken decades for those works to get the credit they deserve. If they had just been Warhols alone, they would be SO boring. Basquiat rocked the whole situation, of course.

If you guys are into art and not simply JMB's art and you saw the movie w/ Jeffrey Wright, there was a biopic movie about Jackson Pollock from 2000 that was similar (IMO) to the movie "Basquiat". It starred Ed Harris as JP. He was a tortured artist as well, transformative as well, derided by some as well, haunted by substance abuse (booze) as well. Ed Harris did a great job, actually looked like Jackson a lot.
Yesterday, I was doing some digital drawings on a MAC computer for an animation that I have been working on in college and my lecturer told me it was similar to a Basquiat painting, now I mind you, I did not know who he was until he told me to look him up and I did and I saw all these interesting paintings that he did and saved one of them to my USB to put in the background of my animation and now seeing this, totally coming across this video and on top of that scrolling through a celebrity's Instagram and seeing a post of her with a friend going to a Basquiat exhibition is telling me something, like I have some connection to this guy or something, I know it sounds kind of odd and ridiculous but, idk, it's just weird. Or maybe the TH-cam coincidence isn't really a coincidence because I think TH-cam maybe linked to Google, kind of? Because of my email address because apparently that's the source of all my media or something like that? but the celeb Instagram coincidence is completely coincidental, I know that and I saw there is a biographical film about him as well, might have to check that out at some point.

The movie about him depicted him as having a really annoying habit of painting over other people's art, including Warhol's. But this video shows it as all being pre-planned, which seems more likely
Coitus Handguns a streetart/ Graffiti thing. It was much about marking your territory. If someone else stepped into yours, or you didn’t like him for whatever reason, you go over his work. It’s still common in graffiti these days.

Warhol didn't need him, I hate that, they just ran in the same circles and they needed each other being quite removed types the both of them. Basquiat got to be respected Warhol got to keep young and current with Jean's honesty.
If you drawing perfect picture from reality, you can gey that picture from camara literally but when you drawing thing from your mind that no one every experienced or seen before and that's transmutted to drawing even if it is perfect or not but the viewer getting the emotion that artist wants to potrait, that's what art is MIND TO REALITY TOOL.
