best Savage 17 HMR review across youtube, well done, very informative.
I agree with sladdster. This is a very good review. Thanks for showcasing the scope.
Out here in the deserts southwest (Arizona) the 17 HMR has mostly replaced the 22 Magnum for hunting coyotes. Open country long range shots are the norm...and that's where the 17 HMR, comes through as you pointed out in the stats. Great round. And that AcuTrigger is pure magic!!! Savage doesn't get enough credit for their products, but real riflemen and hunters understand....simply great guns.
Charles Larson yea I have some family in eastern Oregon that used/uses 17hmr for coyotes because of their flatness there
patton guy gracias
I prefer my 17 wsm i will say the 17 is more accurate though
sootch, I've been a bit critical of some of your other videos but you hit a home run on this one! I've always liked Savage rifles for their accuracy and you did a great job of showcasing this one! Thumbs way up!
Thanks Robert. I appreciate your comment.
What I love about your videos: you can count on a good honest opinion. If a gun suits you, well, I know I'll like it too. Most of my bolt action centerfires are Savage model 10s. ALL tack drivers!
Great video as always, Sootch! you mentioned that you thought Bushnell and Savage may have collaborated. That's no surprise because, in case you're not aware, both (as well as Federal and CCI you mentioned) are owned by the same parent company, Vista Outdoor. Keep up the good work, brother!
Man I love 17 hmr, brings me back to being a kid varmint hunting. First gun I ever owned was a Marlin 917v. Still have her 12 years later!!!!! This made me want to restock on ammo for it and get back out there, I hear the prairie dogs howl.
I just picked up a B17 FV. I love it!
I put a Blackhound Genesis 4-14x44mm MOA scope on it.
Love that Accu Trigger! AMAZING!
I don't think the varmints will like this gun much at all. I love it though!
I used A17 ammo in mine, and got average accuracy. Used Hornady XTP in 20 grains, and at 100 yards got .125 inch 3 shot groups. Remarkable rifle, especially if you take the time to find the right ammo.
Butler Creek magazines that are designated for the A17 also work very well in the B17 and are extremely easy to load.
I've known about the .17hmr caliber for a while and the savage 93r17 is a great rifle but i watched this video and bought the new b17 fv and couldn't be happier. thanks for posting this video. it's a tacdriver. 3 friends have bought them also. the local gun shop was happy getting the business. love your vids.
This video was very helpful I was debating purchasing a model 93 but after watching this video I changed my mind. Only being 13 I had to save a little more money and weight a couple months but it was 110% worth it. I bought the stainless steel barrel model and put a hawk vantage 4-16x50 17hmr bdc scope on it and I have to say it is just a beautiful gun. The day I got it I stretched it out to 350 and it shot great. I'm also impresed with the groupings all the dead woodchucks speak for themselves
Logan Dick Your review is almost as good as the video.
I was going to buy a Savage .17 and was looking at the Semi Auto also, but i wanted something different. I do have a few savages. But i got a Henry .17 lever action with a wood stock and really like it, excellent quality. Shoots great also. Always like watching your videos. Thanks.
My daughter shoots a .17 hmr Ruger. Accuracy is so good on that rifle, that she shoots things like chalk at 50 yards
My daughter draws pictures of .17 hmr Ruger rifle's in chalk by throwing the chalk at a chalk board from 50 yards.
@Vorraboms I believe it.
Vorraboms has always had the way of
I liked this review so much I just ordered one. Midway USA had the blue model on sale for under $300 shipped!
You can't go wrong with Savage!
Bought this gun this past weekend. Put a vortex crossfire II 2-7×32 on it. Using CCI V-max polymer tip 17 grain ammo, right of the box it was easy as pie to put on top on round. Nickel or smaller 5 round groups at 50 yards. I think this is my favorite gun now.
I have the Rugar American .17HMR ( love it.)I found high cap. mags (25 round)they work very well.most fun ive had shooting.
Great rifle as you said. I live nearby where they are manufactured. I have the B22 (.22 wmr) and I love it. I also have a Bushnell scope on it - great combo! Thanks for another great video!
Wow smooth bolt action with very little kick back, Nice attachments as well. Thank you for the great review.
Thanks a lot for this review. I have been curious about this gun and the round in particular. Oddly, in my area, .17 HMR is easier to find than .22LR or magnum.
Have both of these rifles and in the same calibers,my 93 .22 mag had a trigger job done by a gunsmith and it is as good as the accutrigger
I recently purchased the savage 93 with Boyd composite thumbhole stock in stainless and love it. looks wonderful and it is beyond accurate.
Boyd Stocks are the deal. Thanks
John Fire Lame Deer was about 17 to 18 years when he struck a deal with Arthur Savage regarding model 99 hence came the Indian logo. One of his quotes "Indians chase the vision, white man chase the dollar"...
Az N8tive 1
Great video. I really like the fact that you did not play favorites as I noticed your cap said CZ USA. Shows me you gave an honest account of the rifle being tested. Thanks for a great video. I actually purchased the B17 g in the 17 HMR caliber. Although it has the sporter barrel I liked the style of the wood stock over the polymer.
I just picked up the B22 and gotta say, I absolutely love it for training for precision and hunting. Even my friend, a former Army Sniper and Gunsmith was impressed with the feel and ability right out of the box, especially when compared to the 10/22.
Love those sunglasses at 1:13
Great Review - Ordered one last week, so hopefully have it on hand in a few weeks. Have to 1 up this, we get suppressors nearly as standard.. all the best from Ireland.
I watch all your videos. I am in law enforcement here in GA I have got alot of my brother in arms to watch and subscribe to you and your sensible prepper channel. keep up the great work and a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS to you and your family
Thanks for your service my friend. Stay safe out there. Merry Christmas!
Great video production. Excellent review of pros and cons.
Thanks again, Sootch! You always do a great job with your videos!
Another great video! That is a sweet rifle. I have the Savage MK2 G model in 22lr. It runs perfect and is laser beam accurate. Savage makes some great rifles and the Accutrigger they use is amazing. Thanks for the cool video. Keep it up Sootch!
I wish HK would make a .17 HMR semi-auto clone of their MP7 platform! I would gladly pay the NFA tax stamp price for that. If you couldn't tell, I am a big fan of the MP7...
Go back to your video games, kid.
Aaron Mings Go back under your bridge troll...
Aaron Mings .... Why you be so rude? You bad man. You go now, and don't come back here no more. You no welcome here.
1/2 to 3/4 inch 30 round groups at 25 yards
BSA Sweet 17, 4X16 Scope
Bull Barrel
CCI V-Max .17 grain
After friends at the range tried it, they a purchasing one too.
If you want pure long-range accuracy, would you prefer this rifle or the shorter barreled SAVAGE 93R17 FV-SR?
Sootch, if you used a butt rest along with the bipod your groups would be better and your reviews would show how truly accurate this rifle is.
Excellent review, it answers all the questions I needed. THANK YOU SIR FOR THE GREAT VIDEO
Savage is definitely a great company! I have their left handed 111 Trophy Hunter XP in .30-06 that has been a fantastic deer rifle for me! Accurate (just over 1MOA with Federal Powr-Shok soft points!), well made, light weight and has killed deer out to 260 yards for me! My bother has a Savage BMag in .17WSM and a Savage Edge (predecessor to the Axis) in .223 that have also been great! For good bolt guns in either rim fire or centerfire, I take Savage over anyone else these days!
Thanks for the review, great info as usual from you. I have a model 93 combo and I love it... It is a hoot to shoot....
Thanks Keith, Rimfire is so much fun.
Great review as always.love your channel and have been looking for 17hmr rifle.thank you
I liked your review so well, it answered all my questions about this gun, that I went out and bought one today. I even ordered that scope should be here in a couple of days.
I have the classic 17hmr with the accuracy trigger . I really enjoy shooting that gun. It me most accurate riffle I own. But I gladly would upgrade to the newer version
really looking foward to the review on that scope. I've been considering it for my A17, but the low price had me sceptical
Enjoyed the review, I like the newer model you have I have the older version and found at 50 yards the Hornady brand ammo had tighter groups over the Winchester, CCI, and Remington all in same grain but Remington was boat tail. Also in my area the Hornady is the cheaper of all the others.
Ive made a few steel magazine inserts for these so that you can load single shots it fits flush and i case harden them so they look all weird rainbow patterns i can jewel them blue them or whatever but i sold like 25 magazines are all good but sometimes the tip of the round gets niked on the way up into the barrel so my insert just makes it single shot and then you know each rounds in perfect order and you can use the long nvd 25grain 17hmrs that just dont fit in any magazine there long rounds and they hit like freight trains ive seen some people turn there own copper 17s to
this is an awesome little rifle....this is going to be my kids first rifle I believe
I've been considering a Hi-Point 995 or KelTec Sub200-9MM; But this makes a lot more sense and should easier for my wife to use.
Love my model 93. Want to get an A17 and now I have to get this one also.
17 hmr looks like a a mini 223 lol. But I assume a great caliber for hunting small game. Great review Sootch00 !
It is great, if you do your part it is like an instant kill switch. I have shot rabbits with 17 hmr, and they just fall over, no twitching, no movement. Just bang, and thats it.
Adrian Yanez Ya it's great for small game. Very accurate. I got 2 heavy barrel 17hmrs. Use it on gophers every spring and it's literally like said, point and shoot. Taken a Coyote with on in the fall. 150 yard neck shot. Down quick.
Adrian Yanez j
Another great review! ;-) And by far the best Intro... Outro music you have ever used.....
Thanks bippie!
Love your channel. I've actually just been looking at this rifle lately for a prairie dog hunt this spring/summer. Might just have to pick it up.
My favorite gun channel by far!
The only problem with .17hmr is wind drift and ammo cost. Sold both of my .177's and just use reloaded .223
Customairseals Exactly. Learning a little ballistics makes other cartridges funner to shoot in my opinion. I have a good .22LR to go along with my higher end .223 to provide a lot of low cost trigger time.
Agree, was shocked at how much 10mph winds affect this otherwise great round :(
Thanks for the review bro. I’m on board for a lefty.
Savage is a great firearms manufacturer. Not to far away from my home town in Ontario Canada
looks cool ,I mean the weather
Happy New Year Sootch! Thank you for all the great vids you produce. I am DEFINATELY buying this rifle as soon as I can get my paws on one!
that is a nice looking rifle, already have the model 93 and that old girl is a tack driver with the Bars ka sweet. 17 scope and a Harris bipod. as cool as this new bolt gun is I can't justify another .17 bolt action. buttttt! I can talk myself into the savage A17 without much trouble. great video as always. 👍
Well you just cost me a few bucks! I just picked up a new B17FV and can't wait to shoot it. Thanks for the video. PS - Savage owes you a small commission for getting people to buy these because of posts.
Savage make wonderful rim fire rifles. I was lucky enough to buy a Savage 93R17 Thumbhole Classic. Beautiful walnut stock and 24” sporter barrel with high luster blueing. The rifle is super accurate. Sadly these are no longer made. If you find one snag it.
Señor el sootcho, this is the review that got me back into rimfire. Thanks.
Awesome review Don! It looks to me that this would be a good candidate for my little boys first rifle.
I agree, the recoil is so easy. Thanks Adrian!
I just picked up an A17, primarily because of your review. I think a 17 HMR looks like a fun cartridge. Haven’t got it yet as I’m waiting on a background check. During his wait, I did even more research and there’s a lot of people that really have problems with the A17. Gulp. Don’t tell me the B-17 is better...
you do a great job as always in your reviews
you mentioned something about the .308. i just so happen to have the 110s j series that was made in 1980. could potentialy be a sub moa rifle with the right loads id almost bet. the previous owner must have kept it in a safe.
wow that was close...I was the 664 viewer..
I love Savage because I am old school I have a Hog Hunter I love it when I get a chance to go home I always take it to the range or HQ
Not sure that you can really draw any conclusions about accuracy in a 17hmr at 25 yards. How is it grouping at 100 yards? Did you use any other ammo than the A17? The A17 (semi auto) is well known for problems with the magazine and it looks like they still haven't worked out some of the issues. Is the action on the B17 similar to the Bmag or the 93? Burt
Great video! It was like you were reading my mind. I was just looking at the 17 hmr. Merry Christmas!
High quality video man, Subbed!
Thanks Joseph!
I LOVE the 17hmr caliber. You can take everything from squirrel and rabbit up to coyote with these things, easily out 100 yard. My cousin has an old .17 and can repeatably shoot the head of Jefferson out of a dime at 50 yards with these things. "Catastrophic" on small game is a bit of an understatement. At about 50 yards we shot a squirrel in the head and blew the back side of it's head out upon exit... and that's with the 17gr stuff. Not a problem though as this thing is an absolute laser, so as long as you do your part, you'll be fine. Like he said, 1/4" groups at 50 yards is no problem.
A guy I knew took a head-to-tail shot on a squirrel with his .17HMR (it turned just as he was pulling the trigger); the squirrel basically blew up.
Headframe Hunters yeah, I know someone who used the 20gr ammo on a squirrel. It moved last second and he shot it through the chest... well, more like shot out the chest. The legs were the only thing left that was edible.
great stuff .... big fan of the 17hmr and the super mag
wow stock looks sick! would be nice to see the ria 22tcm rifle look like that.
that being said, ever thought of getting one?
I'm a huge fan of the 22 TCM. I've been trying to get a rifle for a while.
thats like epic combination with a 22 tcm rifle and a 9mm pistol. different caliber guns using the same mag. they're like preppy items too. or could be same calibers both 22tcm if you need a little more close range rapid fire gun. look forward to see that vid
RIA has been working on a 22 TCM Glock conversion. I'm excited about that as well.
I think its already done and selling, they call it the 22TCM9R way shorter than the regular 22tcm but same weight and ballistic performance. Looks like the just shoved it in if you ask me. the original 22tcm worked well on the 1911's since the 9mm varians were 28 super compatible. anyway will wait for that day.
Savage 110 It was one of the most accurate 308's on the market??? No way! I thought it was the Savage model 10 short action I could be wrong.
Very impressive review. And thanks for the ammunition comparison. Really helpful. Sorry for the newbie question but does this high speed ammunition (17 HMR) tend to wear out a barrel faster than a 22LR for example?
panther105 in the shooting word 2500 fps is not that fast. Better to say the 1255fps .22LR is very slow. Also, at 17gr the energy to damage the rifling is quite low. Don't under estimate the. 22LR. Very enjoyable and effective to 200yds. At 20% the ammo cost it can be a lot more enjoyable.
Não sei ler em inglês mas consegui fazer alguma tradução e entender a mensagem excelente explicação da arma parabéns meu amigo tirou muitas dúvidas minhas já comprei um rifle 17 hmr marca CBC Brasil
Sticking clay pigeons in the dirt, that is such a good Fucken idea.
joe Anderson even better stick em in the snow
@@brucewaldbauer7216 even, even better stick em in the cow poop
sootch I gotta tell ya man, I love the 17 her round. Its very FAST compared to a 22. now its a little more expensive but i believe its worth it. Its a squirrel killing machine!
Conner Lamphier What's a good spot to kill a squirrel?
Spot as in???? Place or where to shoot?
Head shots if you want to skin and eat them. It’s kind of hard to skin a 2 piece squirrel shot in the ribs!
I have it in both 17 hmr and 17wsm.
Only issue I have is I can’t find ammo for the wsm
Awesome video....
What rings was put on to mount your scope?
Have a savage 93 in 17hmr...its like shooting a laser beam its incredibly easy to be accurate
Sootch00, great review, sir. As Always. I just made my order on Gun Genie. What kind of Bipod are you using for the rifle?
Nice review, thanks. Was there a reason why you didn't compare the 17HMR tp a ballistic tip 22 wmr such as the 30 gr round from CCI, which they list as having 164 ft lbs at 100 yards? The A22 round from CCI has 189 at the same distance. Can't comment on the prices though, they seem similar here in NZ. Def a contender for the next rimfire rifle though.
Great review like always. I've been looking to get a .17.
I like my slim compact savage 93r17 and the magazines in my opinion is better but some people like more modern feature guns but for me simple does it
great reviews always
Great review sootch ! My son just bought this gun !👍
Actually he traded a beagle hound for it !
another great one! keep em rolling in.your vids are one of the few things my 8 year old will drop a ps3 controller for😃
I too, found that the magazine design on this and the B series in general is not easy to load. Even my Dealer/ Gunsmith had some bother with it.
Savage needs to take this one back to the design guys and come up with something better.
Yes, I can fiddle around and get it loaded, but it ain't no Ruger mag. and that's a fact! Otherwise the rifle is one sweet shooting rifle, i have two B series and one A,...these darned mags. are a pain in the ---- !!!
Thanks for this one Don,....always enjoyable and informative to watch your review's.
I posted this but will repeat here. I have Butler Creek mags. and they are very easy to load. 25 rounds too. The curve of the mag still allows for bench shooting.
I shoot my Savage 93 FV in 17 hmr on a regular basis at a 210 yards range and I get best groups with the "heavier" 20gr hp rounds, according to comments on some firearms forums this bullet weight would be even the one recommended by Savage. At least my Savage works the best with the Winchester Super-X 20gr hp and the Hornady 20gr hp ammo, also at 110 yards
I have the 93r GV which is excellent. The biggest change I saw at the shop was the rotary magazine (nice) and stock (ok). Savage continues to move in a solid direction, affordable, and great shooting rifles. How do you like your 93? Will you be doing a review?
The review for the Model 93 is coming up. It's a handy little rifle that I haven't shot a lot but looking forward to getting more range time.
Great video...keep em coming!
now you got me thinking.... 😊😉401G... I like that, a lot 😈
Merry Christmas 🎅🎅🎅⛄☃☃🎄
How is fouling of the barrel? I've heard on 17's fouling is quick. But shoots accurate and pleasurably.
pretty cool rifle.
this is a great learning gun.
I just don't like the Accu-trigger. Would rather have a standard adjustable trigger, not any adjustment or protrusion ON the trigger. Plain old adjustable trigger. Really like Savage rifles though. I did own a 110 in .25-06. Really liked that rifle and caliber alot and kick myself for letting it get away from me. Now I have an Axis in .22-250 with a DIY trigger job and a Boyds stock but have not put in the range time with it yet. Thanks for sharing.
I wonder if it's possible to create a hollow tip or a Lehigh 17 and I'd like to see it pushed out to 200 yards for accuracy see how it does with ballistic gel
Wonder why a hollow tip would be necessary since this cartridge literally explodes on anything it hits.
I have a B17 fv 17hmr
I would think these 17 HMR rifles would be an awesome tool for any intelligent agency in the world to utilize as a quiet, clean sniper rifle for any target up to 200 yards or so. Ten to One, they are being utilized in hostile countries for specific missions as I type this reply.
If a Ruger suppressed, SBR, 10/22 is good enough for Israel special forces, this platform must have a place in of its own.
Thx for the review and info.
God Bless
Great Review! Thanks!
Can you post the link for the mounting rings?
I am really interested in small caliber rifles, but I'm living in Germany and it's so hard to get a license to be able to own and shoot a gun. Would be nice to own a. 17hmr, .22wmr or lr some day... 😅
