Installing the KASA 3-Way Smart Switch

  • If you have basic knowledge and skills related to home electrical work you are capable of installing smart switches in your home. These are devices which replace the standard light switches in the home with switches which are connected to a home WiFi network. This allows you to control those switches using smart phones and tablets, potentially from anywhere in the world where an Internet connection is available.
It's important to install the correct switch in the correct location. For example, most electronic light switches require a connection to the home's neutral wire. Some devices are specifically made so that they don't requite that neutral wire. In this case, I bought a KASA switch which does require a neutral wire connection.
Also, it's important to match the switch with the wiring configuration for either a "Single Pole" or "Three-way" application. A three-way switch is used in places where two light switches are connected to one fixture and you can control the fixture from either switch. And that's what I'm ultimately installing in this video. This three-way switch requires a neutral wire and ground wire in addition to the three wires which were already installed on the older non-smart switch in that location.
I chose the KASA smart switch products because they were readily available at the places where I normally shop and the prices were very attractive. The KASA app allows me to turn lights on and off remotely, of course. It also allows me to schedule individual switches and/or groups of switches to turn on and off at pre-programmed times, including times which automatically adjust in relation to sunrise and sunset changes.
In an upcoming video I'll have a more in depth look at how the app works.

Love how you confuse "internet enabled" with "wifi enabled". Confidence boosting!

Thanks for the reply. I have a few of the non 3-way Kasa switches so it's good to know the status light works on the 3-way units. I wish the brightness level of the led status light could be increased as it's hard to see in daylight. The ability to change the status light colour may also help.

If I wire one of the TP-Link switches incorrectly, is it possible to damage the switch?

Hey Greg! For the secondary switch I had 1 black one red and neutral. I don't think there was a load running to the old switch. Can you help me wire this? I can't get it to work.

Greg, you skipped the important part, those red and black wires from old switch, how to know which one is loaded, and ones travelers ? Got one like yours, one red, 2 blacks.

I installed only one smart switch at the main switch (power line from breaker) . It works fine when manually turn on/off at either smart or standard 3-way switch. However, the Kasa and Alexa apps do not show the light status correctly so I am not able to know whether it is on or off to turn off or on. It does switch the light on/off at the app when I click the button on the app. The schedule setup doesn't work as I set up to turn off at sunrise and on at sunset. I tried using timer schedule on/off too but same problem. I tried multiple of these smart switches but had the same problem. I think there is some kind of firmware problem. There is also another problem the light status at the smart switch always show on even the light is off, this status light should be on only when the light is off and on when the light is off

So traveler 1 and traveler 2 doesn’t have a care which wire goes where?

I need to replace a normal 3 way switch with a Kasa single pole smart switch - I don’t care if the other normal switch works. Can this be done? How do I do this?

Thanks for the video. Can you confirm if the HS210 circuit status light and the Kasa app accurately show the controlled light as on or off when the dummy 3-way switch in the circuit is turned on or off? Thank you.

Yes, whether I turn my lights on with the KASA switch or the non-KASA on the 3-way circuit the KASA switch reacts the same way. It has a little LED circle on the switch which glows when the lights are off and stops glowing when the lights are on. You can also use the KASA app to go into "settings" for each, individual light switch to de-activate the LED circle if you want to. But
I prefer to keep that circle active.

@@GoodTimekeeper Thank you. I have a few single pole Kasa smart switches and I just wish the white status light was brighter. During the day, it can be hard to see.

You show 12-2 wire but 12-3 wire is used between 3 way switches

Ok why would I need controling switches when I am not at home?

    • @GoodTimekeeper

Let me get that video done where I show off the app. It may answer your question. Also, even when I am at home it is convenient to be able to turn lights on and off without having to go to the switch. Like when I’m outside but all of the switches for the outside lights are inside the house.
