The Legend of Devil's Rock. Todmorden Folklore

Depending on who you ask, the large gritstone rock on the hills above Eaatwood, Todmorden is either the Great Rock or Devil's Rock.
The latter name likely due to the folklore tale associated with it!
It is said that, one night, the Devil had had enough of the sinful folk of Todmorden and came to Stoodley Pike, ready to claim their souls. Before he could do so, God appeared next to him and made a bet. If the Devil could leap to the far hillside. God would turn his back and allow the deed to happen. If he failed, then the people of Todmorden would be saved.
Accepting the bet, the Devil leapt and landed on the Great Rock ......but couldn't regain his balance, falling into the valley and disappeared. it is said that the Devil's hoof mark was left in the rock as he landed.
