I am in my first semester of ASL sign and this was so interesting and helpful to see Tyler sign with you Ashley! We beginners are constantly watching proficient signers, making me feel like I can't communicate until I learn everything. By seeing you and Tyler have a conversation, even though he isn't super fluent, makes me feel good about my progress. Plus, you both had to sign slower which helped me to follow the conversation. Thanks for posting :-)

Yes! I’ve taken 2 courses and will be moving onto my 3rd but with the pandemic I haven’t had people to sigh with and I forget some even when I practice by myself. I keep feeling that I can’t communicate with a deaf person unless I’m fluent but this shows that people appreciate all communication even when it’s slow and beginner level.

This was so helpful to me in picking up words. Seeing the same words over and over in the conversation and seeing them spelled, repeated, and signed by two different people really made all the difference! It's much more interesting watching a conversation than just trying to memorize individual signs, but most conversations are way too fast for me to understand. Please do more videos of you signing with a beginner!!!

I don't know ASL at all but I studied linguistics and this is absolutely fascinating. For example, at one point Tyler doesn't know your sign for "table" and asks, but then I see him using the sign later in the conversation! To witness him learning and incorporating new signs in real time is so cool - and I feel like I am starting to understand you after watching several videos now!

I was deaf until I was 10, and no one attempted to learn to sign or anything.. I never learned. I lived in my own world for my first 10 years. I'm still hard of hearing, but I get by with half of what I hear, and reading their lips to make sense of it.
You are very fortunate to have such a loving & supportive family. It did not turn out great for me. I left school, and home at 15 because I was in the mental handicapped class & beaten and told I was worthless and be better off dead by father. I took to heavy drugs until my 30s and homeless most of that time.
I'm trying to learn to sign because my hearing is going below 15% in my best ear, and I will be deaf again soon.

I think that is so cool how he learned to sign to communicate with his deaf sister-in-law. I think it was also cool that it was not a big deal to him that she is deaf. He seems to see her as a person first, but that they had to learn to communicate. I think his parallel with having to speak Spanish to Abuela is a good one. However, they are both verbal languages, so I like how he highlighted that he had to learn to communicate differently with eyes and hands instead of mouth and ears. Thanks for these videos. I love how your family works together to understand each other even if it is family sign and not perfect.

Wow Ashley!! This is definitely one of my top favorite videos!!! ❤ I obviously love all of your videos but I really love seeing the imperfect signing since I'm learning and not proficient. I'm really thankful to Tyler that he'd be willing to sign on video knowing he makes mistakes. It shows me as a learner that it's possible to be where Tyler is and get to where Kim is with time, patience & practice. Loving this language & diving into learning it really makes me wish I had someone to sign with everyday. But he's right you're so sweet & encouraging which makes all the difference!!! I'm so glad I found you before I met an interpreter who told me that I wouldn't be able to interpret at my church for a long time because it's a lifelong journey and I need to be fluent. Negative people like that can have a neg effect on ppl who want to learn. Anyways.... amazing video thank you for all you do! ❤

I really enjoyed this video for so many reasons.
    1) As a language learner of Spanish and a teacher of ESL for many years, I appreciate both of your patience with each other as you negotiate for meaning to understand each other. It makes all the difference when the learner feels supported and comfortable.
    2) I am newly married to my Honduran husband, whose immediate family knows little English. I also appreciate my husband being able to help interpret conversations for me, and I appreciate my sister in law trying to use her limited English to communicate. I can relate!
    3) I’m trying to find more videos to learn sign language and understand the culture more. I look forward to watching more of your videos!

Thank you so much for this video conversation. I support an individual who is deaf and do not have access to asl education where I live so I am trying to learn on my own. It's been very challenging so I appreciate your videos. In fact your introduction to asl videos are what I encourage my new staff members to watch. The conversation format seem to be the most helpful.

Wow! Is all I can say! I’m taking a few asl classes in college this semester! Your videos really help me to understand new signs. But also your videos help me to see how Normal conversation would go between a deaf and a hearing person. Im hearing myself. I so badly wanted to reach out to the deaf community so I could talk to people. And get some practice. But unfortunately I still have not because I am very reluctant. I’m reluctant because I know how important American Sign Language is to the deaf community, and I wouldn’t at all want to offend someone or sign the wrong sign. Seeing you sign to a hearing person, with a very positive and open attitude really has given me a confidence boost to hopefully have a full conversation with a deaf person. I know that if I do decided to reach out to the deaf community that not everyone will be like you. But it does give me hope!

wow you are SO patient with helping others communicate properly with you. Is this a normal thing that most deaf people have learned to adapt to (having to help people communicate with you) or are you just an especially patient person? I have had 4 college level classes for ASL (like 10 years ago) and I can remember most of the vocabulary if I needed to sign it, but oh my goodness if someone else is trying to sign TO me I have to process the signs one word at a time. That is really hard, even for someone who knows a lot of the signs. Watching these videos is amazing practice and when you stop and offer the other person the correct sign that also is a nice refresher for the correct sign.
