can I add that she i feel like transcends race and the deaf community, she is an inspiration to everyone. I'm not black or deaf but i really felt her passion and commitment and power in her performance and in this interview. It's such a privilege to watch her. Being a black woman is icing on the cake!

Visual? Vision impairment means that a person's eyesight cannot be corrected to a “normal” level.
@@courtr1588 I think what Alkenia was trying to do was piggyback on what Justine said about using the term impaired . However an alternative term for those with limited sight but not complete blindness may not be know.

You can't compare the history behind why the Deaf and HoH community choose to identify the way that they identify and why people in other situations choose to identify with different language. Deaf culture is not the same as other cultures. EDIT: But regardless, it's rude to correct someone when they are describing themselves, no matter how well intended. No one corrects women for calling themselves women, or men for calling themselves men...
I'm so happy that she clarified that hearing impaired is offensive. I didn't know that. I will not make the mistake of using the term again. I have a vision impairment, and I use that term because I'm not blind but my vision is very low.
This is a general note for anyone who may come upon this, so it's not necessarily a direct reply to your comment. Just that it's related to the topic.
With any term, it's good to remember that some people won't be offended by the use of the offensive term. But it's good, as "outsiders", to use the adopted term by the community for the community.
I took a disability studies course taught by a woman with a disability and this nuance was drilled into me. E.g. handicap vs disabled vs person with a disability.
Then, of course, the labels associated with each type of situation, such as people who are deaf. E.g. hearing impaired vs deaf or hard of hearing.
Similarly, as a person of color, with friends from different ethnic backgrounds. There's always a handful of people who just don't care if they are labeled with the offending term or the non-offensive term.
But, the safest bet, is to use the least offensive terms. Nobody expects anyone to automatically know what they are. And, once you know, you won't ever forget it.

I respect when someone says that a term is offensive to them, I then avoid using it. But it seems weird to me to deny that deafness is a disability. Luckily not a particularly limiting one IF you have the resources to provide appropriate care as children so you learn sign language etc. But that is not a given in every country or family. Hearing aids are not an option for everyone, nor does everyone want them, which is perfectly fine, no one is obliged to cater to the hearing population. So much like colorblind people can’t work in certain professions, they do have a few professional opportunities less - not very limiting, sure, but it’s a factor. A lot of dangerous things make threatening noises and you are at increased risk if you for example can‘t hear someone shouting behind you, a crashing sound, a snake hissing or rattling in warning but out of sight, or a car honking at you. I mean, a sensory organ is literally not functioning as it should. If you become blind during the course of your life, other people usually at least have their hearing to fall back on, a deaf person who becomes blind will have a much greater struggle. Isn‘t the actual issue the discrimination? I mean, having one or more organs not functioning well shouldn‘t mean you‘re looked down upon or treated worse in any way. I have several friends and family members who definitely refer to themselves as disabled, but then again we don‘t live in the US so it might be culturally different, also everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I can respect that.
@@xposetruth5681 many deaf literature discuss that the term hearing impaired can be offensive to the community. I'm sure many people don't care, but there is a somewhat widely known consensus in the deaf community that it is best, when referring to deaf people in general and not specifically, to not use that term. its surely a case-by-case basis, but as previous commenters said, its better to use the consensus' least offensive term. its not just her opinion, she is speaking for a good portion of the deaf community.

When I was a teenager I used to babysit two gorgeous deaf sisters, like this young lady. One was deaf by an accident and had some hearing, and the other was born profoundly deaf. Because they were sisters they didn't really need to sign formally because they had their own shorthand way of communicating. I remember that they had great fun teaching me the ASL alphabet and how to sign the lyrics to songs, lessons I remember to this day.

I liked when she told us the difference between a deaf performer and a sign interpreter. One is within the deaf community and one serves the deaf community.
My mother was born deaf. She was born in 1934. She went to Lexington School for the deaf in NYC. That was the best thing her mother did for her. My mother could not hear but loved to dance. I loved to watch her dance. It was amazing. I was in awe of her.

@Faithful Grl Thank you. My mom was born in 1934 in Georgia. Her mother came to New York when my mother was a little girl. My grandmother enrolling her in the Lexington School for the deaf was the best thing she did for her. Because things could have gone in a different direction for my mother.
Oh what a good idea putting her in Sister Act 3. That would add a whole new perspective to the choir scenes. I hope Whoopi reads these comments and makes her an offer. Is an older adult with hearing loss and tinnitus I love how she explained how everybody has different hearing loss people don't realize that it was refreshing to finally hear someone address wish her much success.
Yes. My daughter was born deaf but she has implants so she can hear, even though she’s hard of hearing still. However, I did learn something very interesting right now with the interview. My daughter speaks really well even though she is hard of hearing but it makes sense because we are all verbal speakers so makes sense why her speech is as good as it is. Plus she has been going to speech therapy her whole life.

@@tinpanally51_36 I must say that sounds about right and makes perfect sense. We found out she was deaf at 2 years ago. I knew my daughter always had issues from the time she was born but when I was living in Miami every doctor and specialist brushed it off. It wasn’t until I got to North Carolina and went to Duke that they found out all of my daughter’s conditions. My daughter is missing a chromosome which affects all the organs in her body. Her ears being one of them. When I would try to get her speech therapy before she was 2. Miami said they don’t start until 2. In NC, the speech therapist said there’s no age to start as long as u know they have a speech deficit.
Now, your theory makes perfect sense because they started teaching my daughter ASL when she was 2 when we found out she was deaf. However, she got her implants in place at 2 1/2 and now she’s 7 years old. Once she got her implants and had even some form of hearing, she never did ASL again. She wanted to talk talk talk. So even at such a young age, it was evident she knew the importance of speech. She’s very smart. As I always tell people my daughter is physically disabled not mentally disabled and I feel that’s why Justina doesn’t like the word “impaired” because people assume that deaf people are mentally impaired and they aren’t.

@@tinpanally51_36 yeah it can be very frustrating because my daughter’s implants are inside her head so you can’t see them. I constantly have to tell people she was born deaf and has implants so her speech isn’t perfect. Otherwise, they immediately think she’s “slow”. The suggestion I can make is before the people even make an assumption just tell them immediately that you are hard of hearing. For me, it makes it much easier than waiting until they figure out something is wrong. It can be frustrating having to constantly explain yourself but it makes it easier trust me.

My aunt (mother’s twin) was deaf, totally non speaking and non hearing. I smiled this entire video knowing she would have loved this!
As a slight aside, when I go to NY1 news in NYC, for the weather, but there’s a local politician and the person behind her doing the speech in sign language but they express the actual emotions in an enlightening way that politician is not supposed to express at all. ALWAYS the best part of any speech
That's part of "dynamic equivalence." The interpreter is making sure the interpretation - their whole body (facial expression included) - is portraying the same meaning as the speaker.

I love seeing Deaf people rock out! Feeling the vibrations of the music as any other hearing person would. I cheered with a girl who was deaf when I was 12 and she changed my perspective on the community at an early age. I've been learning ASL since I was about 4 years old so communicating with her came naturally and I learned so much, but the best part was listening and dancing to Shania Twain with her in the car, where she would take my hand and put it to the loud speakers so I could feel what she could hear/feel. Justina, keep doing your thing!!! This performance made me smile so much, I love to see the representation on a new level. 🤟🙌
