I won the lottery sort of, when my father died he left me well off and 17 years later, I am still well off! My brother, on the other hand was left with about as much as I but his was all gone less than two years after our father's death! Yea, not sure what ppl are thinking. You bring home somewhere in the $400k range. In some states, you may bring home in the $500k to $600k range. Regardless, that's not enough money to live like you won the jackpot. Anyone who wins $1M should continue to work their jobs and not spend any differently than they did before winning.

With an extra million dollars suddenly won at the lottery, the best thing, in my opinion, would be to place it in the market or to buy real estate to get rent from it, and to change nothing with your life. If you hit ten millions or more, then you can make some radical changes in your lifestyle but remaining smart about how you do it is mandatory.
My advice: pay uncle Sam upfront (first), pay off ALL of your debt, put some in savings for the future, invest some, spend reasonably, and enjoy life. Also, give to the poor, needy, and charitable donations. Amen

I am always amazed by stories of lottery winners or once super rich celebrities being broke. Had they just put one of their millions into an annuity for a rainy day they would have a $5,500 monthly income for life. I think a star that makes 15 million per film should consider buying a million dollar annuity for every film they make. After 5-6-10 movies the would have a very comfortable secure income for when their beauty fades or when their ex takes it all.
I personally know Jack Whittaker, bc he is from my hometown in WV. my father and him were friends.. At one time Jacks business was booming, when he won the lottery his business was on the verge of bankrupcy.. Instead of reinvesting into his one stable means of income, he closed the business costing around 100 West Virgina jobs.. He bought a helicopter, which crashed.. Bought is granddaughter a fast sports car, to which she died in.. But probably the most disturbing fact is he took 250k to a strip club, when the bouncer at the door told him he could not bring the money in, Jack hit The bouncer and got sued... Jeezzzz. I would not let people know I won big. I would live regularly, but with more opportunities to travel and take my kids to places around this world. My children would be my biggest investment. They are my legacy.

The problem with a lot of people is that they don't know how to manage their money. It wouldn't matter if they made $50k per year or $5 million per year. I stopped gambling altogether over 13 years ago; I show up for work and live within my means. Mortgage paid off 7 years ago, zero debt, and a tidy sum in a Roth, rollover & current 401k. It’s tempting to play big Megamillions or Power Ball jackpot; but I lay off gambling, booze, drugs, and keep my shoulder to the wheel & nose to the grindstone.

Buying property isn’t dumb. It’s an asset that could even appreciate depending on what you bought. It’s the first thing I would do. Actually I would buy 2 properties. One to live in and another for the rental income.
I've always advised people who have won money to do the following: 1. Hire a Financial Advisor (but NOT the bank) 2. Hire an answering service to take your calls (90% will be beggars, liars and "distant" family) 3. Instruct the service to take names and numbers. They are to tell the callers that their plight will be considered, but if they call a second time they will be blackballed. 4. Take 5% and call it a celebration fund. Party, travel, buy a Ferrari etc. (depending on the size of the win, of course) 5. If you are looking to buy a home, don't spend more than 25% of your winnings. Of course, this depends on the size of the winnings and your present financial circumstances, but it's a good rule of thumb. 6. Promise yourself that you will live 1 year on the budget the Financial Advisor states you can afford. This is mostly advice for those with little self control. You know yourself. If you can get through the year you will have conditioned yourself to live at a level that you can afford. If you can't find happiness just in the fact that you never have to worry about money again, well...there's no making you happy.

If I won the lotto I would hire a financial and wealth team of teachers and dedicate my time to learning mindfulness, financial accounting, and finance and investments. While getting fit and healthy. But, you don't really need to win the lotto to do all of that, but having money frees up a lot of time and energy to dedicate to doing it. Otherwise, it takes a lot of time and discipline.

When I was in the US Navy I once entered an “Anchor Pool” (betting money on when the ship will actually drop it’s anchor, the one who is closest wins). I won $240.00. I personally know Jack Whittaker, bc he is from my hometown in WV. my father and him were friends.. At one time Jacks business was booming, when he won the lottery his business was on the verge of bankrupcy.. Instead of reinvesting into his one stable means of income, he closed the business costing around 100 West Virgina jobs.. He bought a helicopter, which crashed.. Bought is granddaughter a fast sports car, to which she died in.. But probably the most disturbing fact is he took 250k to a strip club, when the bouncer at the door told him he could not bring the money in, Jack hit The bouncer and got sued... Jeezzzz. Money is the root of all Evil

I would not let people know I won big. I would live regularly, but with more opportunities to travel and take my kids to places around this world. My children would be my biggest investment. They are my legacy.

Yeah, I think I'd get some timber land and a storage unit rental place. If I got a hair/nail shop or a dog groomer's shop, I'd make sure I had excellent stylists or groomers around. Your shop's only as good as the ppl u rent the work stations to.

In my state one of the conditions of accepting the winnings is agreeing to let the lottery use your name and likeness for advertising.

The problem with a lot of people is that they don't know how to manage their money. It wouldn't matter if they made $50k per year or $5 million per year. They spend it just as fast as they earn it or even faster.
To succeed with money is quite simple. Spend less than you make, pay your taxes and don't have children you can't afford to care for.
Exactly, look at MC Hammer, he made tens of millions, never paid taxes, blew it all on a mansion , race horses and partying.
He went broke within a few years and is still paying off the IRS.

Won 200000 and it got thrown away.
I did win $500 on a ticket one day and it went right to Bill's all of it filled up my gas tank I had $40 left to buy a couple more scratch offs and didn't win anything else

I have a childhood friend who won $500k from a lawsuit and blew through it in 10 months and he has absolutely nothing to show for it. Poor people are poor because of their mindset.

Don't make obvious big purchases (don't live in poverty for years then come home in a Roles Royce).

The people should fight like hell to make it illegal for lottery winners to be put in the public domain. Maybe folks have a right to know the way of a public official but I don't see how it is a right for someone to know any citizens wage or winnings. All of a sudden one has friends and relatives they never knew they had.

The problem is most times those who win big don't have the business smarts to deal with it, nor are they mature enough to know what to do other than revel in their fantasies. A multi million dollar payout managed carefully can do a lot of good in this world, from giving to a lot of worthy charities to rewarding cash strapped businesses trying to really make the world a better place. God knows, self serving governments will never achieve that...
When we all die, and look back at our lives, the legacy we leave as a result of being granted the privilege to live on this world, is the only thing that will provide us our small place in history. That history will be so much better if those who follow remember us as someone who truly "made a difference"
Most charities do nothing but give a majority of that money to their own pockets when large donations are made. Best used in other ways.

When I won the lottery I was having a wonderful time doing everything I ever dreamed of. Then I woke up.
When I won lotto I invest half of it, half I donated in charity and churches, built scholarship foundations, made memories with friends and families, build passive income like apartments, condos, building rentals..... I lived on interest.....
I'm going to win the lottery this weekend and I am only paying my few debts and sitting on the money for at least 1 year before I decide to buy my 1st home then travel but mostly invest in businesses and small businesses. Not telling anybody and def not abusing the resources staying humble and modest. The money won't change me.

I stopped gambling altogether over 13 years ago; I show up for work and live within my means. Mortgage paid off 7 years ago, zero debt, and a tidy sum in a Roth, rollover & current 401k. It’s tempting to play big Megamillions or Power Ball jackpot; but I lay off gambling, booze, drugs, and keep my shoulder to the wheel & nose to the grindstone.
None of the ones shown won great amounts. At least not enough to go wild like all these people did. None of these people had the common sense to manage what they did get. How sad.☹️

Buying property isn’t dumb. It’s an asset that could even appreciate depending on what you bought. It’s the first thing I would do. Actually I would buy 2 properties. One to live in and another for the rental income.

I've always advised people who have won money to do the following:
1. Hire a Financial Advisor (but NOT the bank)
2. Hire an answering service to take your calls (90% will be beggars, liars and "distant" family)
3. Instruct the service to take names and numbers. They are to tell the callers that their plight will be considered, but if they call a second time they will be blackballed.
4. Take 5% and call it a celebration fund. Party, travel, buy a Ferrari etc. (depending on the size of the win, of course)
5. If you are looking to buy a home, don't spend more than 25% of your winnings. Of course, this depends on the size of the winnings and your present financial circumstances, but it's a good rule of thumb.
6. Promise yourself that you will live 1 year on the budget the Financial Advisor states you can afford. This is mostly advice for those with little self control. You know yourself. If you can get through the year you will have conditioned yourself to live at a level that you can afford. If you can't find happiness just in the fact that you never have to worry about money again, well...there's no making you happy.

If I won the lotto I would hire a financial and wealth team of teachers and dedicate my time to learning mindfulness, financial accounting, and finance and investments. While getting fit and healthy. But, you don't really need to win the lotto to do all of that, but having money frees up a lot of time and energy to dedicate to doing it. Otherwise, it takes a lot of time and discipline.

Some folks live paycheck to paycheck because they don’t know how to manage their money. Winning large sums of money won’t change that fact. Think about it: a person “living paycheck to paycheck” can’t actually afford to be spending money on lottery tickets, but they sacrifice that bill/potential savings money to gamble, so is it really a surprise that they’d blow millions?
In my case, even if people knew of my winnings, I would say one thing. I don't like to talk money with friends....it ruins the friendship. I would buy gold and silver as well. At least 20% of it

I've never been able to afford a decent home for my children or myself. I would gift my children, and make them live off the interest, and buy a decent home and car. I would remain humble because I've never been able to not worry about money, so no way could I waste it

Property investment is not the sure thing that people imagine. Another crash along the lines of 2008 will wipe out a good deal of it.

No matter how big the inflation rises, the gold will keep/rise in value! As for peoperties, are a regular income! So best way is to split the money in 4 ways: 25% peoperties, 25% gold, 25% keep in the bank as a backup and 25% to relax and clear your mind (normal not expensive long vacation)!
