    Winning the lottery ruined my marriage. I came home with a huge grin on my face and said to my wife, “What would you like to do if I won the lottery?”

    The 2 things I would do different than the video says is you will be taxed 25% of the winnings right away but the bracket you are in from winning a large sum is at 37% and the remaining 12% is due at tax time, I'd have them take out 40% instead of the 25% right off the bat and get a little back at tax time.
    Also I would not hire an attorney I would find a law firm that specializes in many fields and put them on retainer. I feel an attorney can take from you but a firm on retainer will be more difficult to steal from me.

    Correction in AZ you can request to stay anonymous, if you win over a certain amount. From the AZ Lottery; Public Disclosure: As a state agency, and due to the fact that winnings are comprised of public money, the Arizona Lottery is subject to public disclosure laws. After 90 days, a winner's name, city of residence, and the amount won becomes public record and may be release upon request. In addition, the Lottery may issue a press release stating the above-mentioned information as well as the date won, retailer name, and location. Additional information may also be included if the winner has agreed that it can be released. Winners of prizes $100,000 or greater, however, may request permanent confidentiality of their name.

    Nr.9 is worth going into more detail on. The IRS (the Feds) will require a hold-back of 25 or 29%, but states that have state income taxes (most do) will also reach into your pockets, not at the time of distribution but when it comes time to do your taxes (April 15).
    Additionally, there could also be local taxes, either on the county or city level (New York City, to name one, has such an income tax). But then Uncle Sam comes around for round 2, because a sizeable jackpot will put a lottery winner into the top tax bracket, currently at about 37%. So there are still taxes owed between the percentage withheld by the lottery and the top tier rate.
    Still, taking the lump sum beats taking the 30-year annuity option, which will lose half its purchasing power over time. Inflation is a bitch.

    • @oldfogey4679
      @oldfogey4679 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shelby I've heard ur payout after taxes increases over time so it's better to take the money over 25 years not as A lump sum!

    • @shelbynamels973
      @shelbynamels973 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@oldfogey4679 I don't think so. The only way I see that happening is if the tax rate changes. Since the Trump tax cuts are set to expire soon, the federal top tax rate will go up by two percent, so you will be paying more in income tax if your win is sizeable enough to put you into the top tax bracket, which I expect is the case. So instead of getting more money, you can expect to be getting less.
      Your bigger risk accepting a payout over time is with inflation. If the payout amount stays the same over 25 years (it usually does with all lotteries). in 12 to 15 years the money will have lost around half its purchasing power, because everything will be more expensive.
      That's why in my view taking the lump sum - even if it is less than the annuity payout - and investing the money conservatively in a stock index fund. A four percent withdrawal rate will provide enough money for a comfortable life without touching the principal amount.
      Besides, any time you opt for an annuity payout - be that a lottery win or an annuity you bought yourself - you are making a bet that you will live long enough to get a substantial amount back. If you get run over by a truck tomorrow, you lose.

      Since my post, I have learned that there is in fact an increase in the payments if taken over time. That is to make up for the declining purchasing power due to inflation, so it functions more like a COLA (cost of living adjustment).
      Even with that, I still think taking the lump sum and investing it with a target rate of 8 -12% is the better way to go.

    Michigan only lottery winners can remain anonymous, but multi-state lotto winners from Michigan can not remain anonymous. But there is a work around. If you are a Michigan resident and win a multi-state Lotto you can form a "lottery club". One of the lottery club members is required to be "the face of club" to claim the prize. There's an Attorney in Florida who has served this roll on other winning lotto clubs. The other members of the club remain anonymous, the attorney gets paid and the winners keep their identities secret.

    I think the most important thing is to stay anonymous (if possible) and don’t tell ANYONE. Just live like a normal person. Don’t go nuts and buy a mansion, a fancy car, and tons of expensive clothes and accessories. That’s called advertising. Also, that’s a great way to burn through all your money real fast.
    Don’t tell your kids or other relatives. Just live comfortably and reasonably and you could be set for life if you also take the advice in this video. No, I haven’t won the lotto. I don’t even play it. But common sense tells me that if you go from living one lifestyle (paycheck to paycheck or even broke) to suddenly buying all kinds of expensive crap, people will notice. Family and friends will start asking questions. Your kids may brag about their new-found wealth. People talk. Just keep living, pay your bills, invest for sure, and don’t draw attention to the fact that you suddenly have more money than most people will ever see in their entire lives and you should be fine.

I would still rent an apartment instead of buying a house because I don't want the hassle of keeping up the property. I'm not into all the "toys," so that wouldn't even come into play. I'm not married and don't have a girlfriend, so no issues there. My kids are grown, and although I might help them out a bit, they know me and know that help would extend only so far. I don't want a big fancy place to live or car to drive. I don't need "toys". I only buy new clothes when the old ones wear out. The only thing I might buy is a few new kitchen appliances and higher quality food. Other than that, I don't need anything else.

      And yet, judges across the country have ruled AGAINST the lottery winner. Be smart and don't bet on the goodness of people when faced with the temptation of large amounts of money. And sorry to say, most of the time it is with family members, so take the safe route and protect yourself. I know, it seems cold, but it is what it is.

    Questions to Americans;
    1.Would you rather have smaller lottery pots like ours in England and other European countries but its 100% tax free( you only pay tax on the interest)? For context the English pot is usually £5-£20m and the European pot is £30m-£130m(£195m being the record).
    2.If you win the lottery. Would changing your government name to James Smith or Mary Smith before claiming your prize not work?

    2) show up to the lottery office in a rented car by someone elses name
    3) create a trust before hand...
    4) create several bank accounts and once money in trust, transfer aliitle to thos banks...
    5) if you renting or paying mortgage or own a property... still keep it going as everything will be related to those addresses as same with your driving licenses as well..
    6) buy property in a new city away from where you currently live, nothing too fancy
    7) kepp your car payments and loans going as they will be linked to your old addresses
    8) when buying new stuff put it in the old property name...
    9) dont tell anyone, stay under cover
    10) dont show boat live as before and stay humble
