guys relax , i was not there , but from the situation the crane was probably avoiding a collission with oncoming trafic ... and it could not get on the road again. the rescue proceded like textbook , nobody shouting nobody got hurt , excellent job , and as everybody understands it was not 250 ton , but 5x12 ton (5 axles) The road in question is not suited to carry three cranes , so lifing is only to allow the wrecker to winch the truck back on the track without disturbing to much of the environment.
Wow, typical German quality video with incredible filming along with well organised teamwork and recovery. It's the first time I've ever seen mid positioned crane counterweights. Danke
Great coverage and recovery. Hell fire imagine being crane driver telling his boss i'm in the ditch. We don't know the circumstances that led to this accident.
with millions of dollars likely at stake on the very expensive stuck vehicle - I was impressed to see the professional and safe (slower) process to ensure that the truck was rescued and that no one was hurt
We had a 175 ton crane slide into a ditch in Aspen Colorado. Exactly the way this one is. We just put some dunnage under the out riggers in the ditch. Raised the crane. Put more dunnage under the tires, then raised the riggers. Crab walked it back onto the road.
You have an answer in the video. It's wet and cold, I wouldn't call the ground in that place stable for uneven load lifting and one of crane out riggers feet fell out from its position under the crane. These combined would make it unnecessary risk for the operation, if something would happen not payable from insurance.
Guten Tag,baue den 1000 Tonnen Kran, für Windparks auf .Ausgleichmasse 395 Tonnen.Bin der LKW Fahrer . Die Räder vom Kran wiegen 12 Tonnen pro Achse. Die Kanzel vom Kettenkran wiegt 90 Tonnen.

Gute Arbeit. Ja, das ist auch nicht einfach so einen Koloss wieder auf die Straße zu bringen . Diese Menschen müssen Millimeter genau die Arbeit optimieren, damit der robuste Gigant nicht kippt und die richtige Position beibehalten wird.
I was worried that it would take ages, when I noticed you'd set up lighting units first during daylight! Very careful and complete footings and load spreading so you didn't end up with 3 cranes in a ditch. I'm not sure why you rigged to the boom and then changed to the outriggers?
Setup and breakdown of all that equipment is time consuming. I hope there was a canteen truck with hot food and drink, and some portable bathrooms. A job well done.
I was a crane operator. One of my screw-ups was with a 35ton Grove all terrain that I somehow put in the ditch on a a very snowy day. It required two big wreckers to get it out. As punishment I was given three days off with no pay. I went to work for someone else and didn't go back to the old company until the people who knew about my SNAFU had retired, quit, or been fired.
Things happen; that's what insurance is for. If it happens more often to you than to someone else I would get worried, but one-offs? Don't worry too much. Oh, and an employer that fires you for causing one accident isn't thinking straight. They just paid a lot of money to teach you what not to do, and by firing you he throws away the experience you gained while you get to keep it and use it at your next job.
An excellent video, documenting a long, tedious, careful recovery of a mobile crane. The cost of the recovery was certainly a sizeable fraction of the cost of the crane, but it had to be moved regardless. I saw something similar at an Air Force base when a fighter aircraft was being towed and the driver allowed one of the main gear to roll off of the concrete onto a thin asphalt area. The wheel sank nearly 40 centimeters, and the plane had to be lifted with a crane to recover it.
This is a perfect example of how to turn a $100 job into a $1000 job. They acted like it was a 600,000 Kg lift. That crane weighs 60,000 Kg. That should have taken about 90 minutes. They didn’t need such a massive crew, counter weights, tow truck, etc. that was ridiculous.
didn't think they actually knew how to do it at the start, I think it was the recovery lorry crew who suggested the spreader spars. It also mad me laugh when they retired to a safe area prior to the lift, and proceeded to stand by the recovery trucks anchor wire being jerry rigged from the tree. If that wire had gone there would have been some nasty injuries!!!
My guess is somewhere between $20k and $30K. I haven’t finished watching but it seemed to took possibly 10 hrs or more to complete (it said camera on top of crane stopped after running 8hrs). With the number of men there and all that equipment……. If you figure $2k to $3k per hour you get to my number. I would be curious to hear other opinions. The cost of all that equipment is several millions so you need to charge a lot to cover that plus a lot of man hours went into this. Edit: possibly more since i think this took more than ten hours with the time to take all equipment away.
Another day at work for pros.. I'm retired but back in the day we did this kind of lifting with wire rope and chain rigging. The advent of polymer slings sure makes a hard job easier. Still, handling chain in the weather sucks.
It was obvious to me, if you put the nearside wheels of any vehicle weighing 60 tons on soft ground what would happen. Question is why would you do it ?
