Me too...I really like Fels for spot removal! But it doesn't work sometimes so I also have Zote (pink and white) but haven't tried the latter yet because of my concern about Borax in my recipe.
I've made my own laundry soap for years. I do wear a mask when mixing and either do in out side or close the stove fan when stirring it. I found I can't tolerate the Zote so always use Fels Naptha instead.
You sold me on your channel when you told us to research ourselves to make sure we or anyone else are legit. Thank you, that went a long way with me, you are sincere and apparently honest, nice breath of fresh air.
@@Avenuegirl73 About a year ago I started making our laundry soap. I will never go back. Not only is it much cheaper but it's removes a ton of chemicals from your clothes which is inherent with detergents. Please note there is a difference between soap and detergent. Almost everything you think about as soap these days is actually detergent.
Prof Pam⚘️ Prof Jim 🎬📹 I live Bakersfield , Kern County, the Borax mines were in my county and we passed that whole area often....my family talked about Borax as we passed, daddy sharing - his knowledge of Borax- 50-60 years ago... Nice to learn more . Thank you for great info... Always #teamcantrell❤
Pam, I appreciate you making such informative and very helpful videos. You inspire me also because I am 68, and you cover how to overcome problems that are specific to aging. You never seem to let these problems slow you down. You simply find a way to do the task at hand. I am interested in knowing how to make many products for ourselves. I would love to learn anything you'd care to share. Thank you for being so thoughtful always about what we might need to know.
I think that this is one of the most useful videos you’ve ever done! I cannot wait to explore the many uses of Borax and to save some money whilst doing so! Thank you!
I've been making my own laundry detergent for about 5-6 years and I often include Borax. It works far better than anything in the grocery stores, costs a fraction and doesn't create the waste to be disposed of, particularly of the liquid detergent jugs.
@ For every one bar of Castile soap (grated), mix 1 cup washing soda, 1 cup Borax, 1 cup Ecos Oxo Bright and 1/2 cup kosher salt. Use 2 Tbsp. for HE washers, 1/4 cup top loader. I multiply this by 6 when I make it and it's lasts 8-9 months for me.
From Heloise, I have been dumping cheap cheap salt, like Morton's, in a "path" around my house foundation. It needs to be 3 to 4 inches wide and NO ants, most bugs. I live in Florida and it's kinda shocking. I do use Borax in homemade washer/ laundry soap. Fels Naptha is wonderful, as a bar of soap, for getting out stains, or Zote. There are a lot of old time remedies that are so much more safe. Thank you for this
I use Fels Naptha soap, Borax, and washing soda mixed in a 5 gallon pail with hot water to make homemade laundry detergent. I works amazing and very cheap to make
I use the same three soaps to make my laundry soap, but I don’t add water, I use the dry powder. The problem is, I have a hard time finding Fels Naptha anymore.
I bought a box about 10 years ago for something … can’t remember what. It’s been on my shelf since then and almost discarded it recently when I did a clean out. Now I’m glad that I didn’t! So many ideas for household use and attacking those stubborn stains. Than you so much for your video. Have loved watching and learning from your channel for these last few years. ❤
Very interesting. We have "white" bar towels that we use in the kitchen daily that never look clean now. I can't use bleach, but we do have Borax on the shelf. I look forward to the laundry recipe. I greatly appreciate your researching these things. So helpfull.
I use this for my home made liquid laundry soap and one bar of zote. I also ad 1 cup of washing soda! it gels up nice and smells great and gets the clothes very clean.
There are numerous recipes with higher concentrations. This was the original recipe shared with me 17yrs ago. (Minus scent beads, those were not even avail, then.). Cost is less than .40 per gallon. 1/2 bar zote or fels grated, then melted-cooked in about 1 gallon water Once melted add a few scent beads Add 1 cup each of borax and washing soda Stir until dissolved, pour in a 5 gallon bucket that has cool water in it, mix, add enough water to make 5 gallons. Let set for 24 hours. Pour in dispensers. (I store all the supplies/recipe in my bucket). Shake well before using. Recently, somewhere, read that adding a little commercial liquid detergent helps it to stay mixed. I just repurpose smaller bottles that are easy to shake up. But that sounded interesting. I am excited that Rose is planning to do a video on this topic, cant wait to see what she has learned/ she always sheds a little more light on the science!
@@kimmyseegmiller985 A tip I read years ago, to save on fabric softner was to add about a tsp to a spray bottle of water and mist clothes in the dryer before turning it on. This has worked great and bonus is no slime build-up in washing machine.
Stopped using Tide years ago. My husband's skin would react to it. Too toxic for us. I prefer to use more natural products. We use the homemade recipe, a version of what is above.
Congratulations on getting the stains out of the breakfast set cushion, it looks great! Now you can enjoy it even more ❤ thank you for all of your helpful information!!
Pam we use it dissolved in hot water in our carpet cleaner. It works well to remove stains. We cleaned the rv carpet recently and you should see the difference! It made our carpet look new.
I totally love these videos on things to keep in our storage and this one is a favorite. We have used Borax for years and in our laundry but I really didn’t veer to far off the course but I will now. Thanks Pam and Jim!
I mix 1 Tablespoon of borax, which is pure boron, into a quart canning jar filled with filtered water up to the neck. Add a lid and shake up. Let the borax dissolve completely. Then I pour a shotglass amount in my smoothie, tea, juice whatever drink to get my boron. We are all deficient of this mineral. Mine didn't even register on a hair analysis. Really helps your bones.
PLEASE use a food-safe boron and NOT borax from a paper box. There is NO protection from the MANY toxins in the supply chain when you ingest this type of boxed borax. Also you may be VERY low since you are able to use that much, but it is NOT the amount for everyone. For example if I take more than 1/2t. every six months it's a bad thing for me. Just a note to folks to use what works for them, not for osmeone else.
Please do not ingest borax, even in the smallest amount. If you need the mineral, purchase boron for supplementation. Borax is a cleaning product, it is not food grade.
In our busy lives, most of us don't have time to spare but creating your own cleaning, laundry and spot removal can be made with inexpensive products purchased at the grocery store and it's so simple. I have cut down my grocery bill so much by making my own, plus you know exactly what chemicals you're subjecting you & your family to. Most of the expense comes from the containers you need to use what you make but of course, these are all reusable so it's the initial expense. These homemade products are simple to make & work just as well if not better then store bought!
Thanks for this well prepared and thoughtful video. The details you offer really increase my ability to learn. Example-using a dark dish to pour the borax so we could see the granules, comparing the consistency of cleaning mixture to toothpaste-syrup, including all successful uses. I began using Borax in 2020 as we worked in the medical field and it really does reduce orders. Oh, how I wish you had been a professor of mine. Y''all are great!
I hadn't seen you for a while I'm glad you're on. I use borax for a lot of things especially my laundry detergent. I've been making my own laundry detergent for about 20 years and I really love it
Very informative video. I wish everyone used unscented laundry soap. I feel so sorry for small children that have to smell that awful stuff. It gives me a headache almost instantly.
I put a bit in every bath I take. It keeps my psoriasis & lichen sclerosis from flaring. My autoimmune skin conditions have calmed WAY down since doing this.
I make a laundry soap as follows. In a gallon glass jug, fill lt half full with warm water and 1/2 cup of birax and 1/2 cup of washing soda. Stir or shake till dissolved and well mixed. Fill it up to the top with cold water, leaving enough room for 1/2 cup of Dawn Detergent. Cap the jar and roll the jar to mix so the sosp doesn't bubble up. I have used this for over 10 years. Im 85 years old. If you happen to find a grease stain or whatever on clothes, rub a bit onto the stain with a soft toothbrush. Good stuff.😊
Thank you for your formula. I have been using borax in my laundry for decades to boost the effectiveness of my laundry detergent. Plus, our water is hard. I am making some today.
I have a similar laundry soap recipe and I add the original blue Dawn to it also!! Dawn has been used for greasy laundry stains for as long as I can remember (almost 60) so it’s a great addition to homemade laundry soap.
@@doghairdontcarelindaniel7531 Washing soda is pure sodium carbonate (not to be cofused with Bicarbonate of soda, baking soda). Here in Canada it comes under the Arm and Hammer brand name, not sure if it's the same in the states.
Thank you very much for this informative video. I am a mature age Australian lady and remember my grandmother used Borax regularly in her home. I have always had a pack in my laundry cupboard and admit rarely using it. This is going to change from now ! I just subscribed to your channel and look forward to now seeing more of your excellent videos. Again, thank you and warm good wishes from Oz 🙏💐🌟
I find the current laundry liquid soaps were not cleaning my clothes like they use to, so I started making my own laundry soap. What a fabulous result! Clothes are brighter & whites whiter. Borax also gets rid of roaches & water bugs, & if you live in the south you know what I mean.
The original Barkeepers Friend was/is a powder. It is still readily available and is the cleaner of choice for stainless steel and copper utensils in my kitchen.
In this day and age with prepackaged food, air fresheners, chemically grown veg, pollution in our air etc the least of your worries is using cleaning products
Hi Rose, I had become unsubscribed and with everything going on didn't realize your videos were missing. So glad to have you back, I still have Borax but will be putting more back.
I put it in a jar and add hot water to dissolve, then add peroxide and put it in a spray bottle I hang my pillows on the line and spray them with the mixture. Works great! Been doing it for years
Thank you for these great uses for Borax. Much appreciated

This information is so helpful. I have some stains in my sink that Comet, even with lots of scrubbing, won't take off. I will be purchasing Borax today. Looking forward to your laundry soap experiment. I use tide too but, as a new widow, I need to tighten the budget. Thank you Pam and Jim for all you do for this community.
We live in southern California. My husband and I took a day trip a few years ago to Boron, California. There is a visitor's center at the Borax mine with a nice informational presentation and a small gift shop. In Boron, itself, there is (was) a small museum. It would be interesting as part of a science unit for some kids (or adults).
Great grandma & Grandma always used borax to clean with, including laundry. Grandma & Grandpa taught me as many of the old ways as our life happened. So, I've been able to teach older & younger generations of people as they have been involved with me & my life. Of course some of these hacks my children picked up on too.
I also use the micro fiber clothes, but I found that sewing two together with zigzag stich with extra cross corner zigzag love the thickness and my hands handle them easier
i tried this on our old white towels as a last ditch attempt before throwing them out. washing soda, borax and laundry detergent soaked in a bathtub for 4 hours and then running a load of laundry. omg the towels are white, no odor all stains gone and look great. we know regularly use it in winter time for our laundry to eliminate those wintertime laundry odors.
Learned about Borax in the laundry when I did costuming for community theater, took out the theater makeup. It's not just bleach, it also works well with OxyClean.
Excellent information once again. I used to keep Borax at home but never realized just how many other applications for use it had. I only tossed some in laundry from time to time. It's going back on my shopping list this week!
Thank you for the tips on uses for Borax and baking soda. I have some of both. Thank you also for remembering and honoring your Mom. My mother died during 2020, and am keeping some of her things, to remind me of her, and to honor her. Of course, as things age, they show their wear. To me, that is ok.
Borax is as safe as table salt, acc to the Material Data Safety Sheet. It has so many household and garden and even therapeutic uses, even fire-proofing paper and fabrics.
My mom used Borax for years. I remember the green and yellow box. I once tried to use borax to clean my flooring in my kitchen. I don't know if it was linoleum or what, but it was one big solid piece and it was from the 1960s and it had a beautiful patterned design that looked like marble. I must have made the solution too strong, or left it on too long, because the borax took the 50-year-old pattern/design right off. I'm so glad that I tested a small patch, first.
FABULOUS. Thank you. My Mom used Borax while I was going up. I used it 50 years ago in my first homes after I first got married. But I forgot about through t y e years. My mom used to use it in washing cloth diapers on a scrub board and laundry tub. She also used to use it to clean the unvarnished wooden floors in the old house we lived in. It also kills roaches , which is good to know for someone who lives in the mountains or desert or any place where roach or bug infestations might occur. I'm excited to now use it in my whites again. Thank you. I've been enjoying your videos now for years. You are always informative and always a pleasure. THANK YOU.
I love this!!! I bought mine because of ants! It definitely helped. They were such an annoyance but they were gone in 2 days! I'm so glad to see these other uses! Thank you
Me too. I had ants coming into the house so even though it was scary to do I put the mixture of Borax and sugar into an empty water bottle laid on its side with numerous holes punched in the sides and top and put it near the wall where I thought they were coming in at and it didn't take long to see hundreds of ants come inside (the scary part) and surround the bottle but I resisted the urge to freak out and just let it do its thing and within 2 days they were completely gone with some dead ones in the bottle. No more coming in at all! I then caulked the area good to keep them from coming in anymore in the future. I also put this mixture outside as a perimeter barrier.
I to have borax and baking soda in bulk in ny pantry. A word of warning to those who make there own clothes washing powder. Please check your washer instructions. The new machines say it will void your warrenty if you dont use what they tell you. It happened to me. Thank you for the video rose. I love them all

I like the older box packaging. The newer boxes absorb moisture in high humidity environments and the borax turns into hard blocks.

I remember FAB detergent that had lemon freshened borax. Great detergent
Me too! My grandma used FAB all the time. Wish they still made it.
I have been making my own liquid laundry soap with borax, washing soda & zote for 15 years and it is fantastic! Thank you for sharing!
I just bought the stuff to do this. I want to try it and see if it works for us
@@Avenuegirl73 About a year ago I started making our laundry soap. I will never go back. Not only is it much cheaper but it's removes a ton of chemicals from your clothes which is inherent with detergents.
Please note there is a difference between soap and detergent. Almost everything you think about as soap these days is actually detergent.
Zote?
@@NanaGramIn case they don’t answer. Zote comes in a bar and can be purchased at Walmart, etc. It’s one of the ing. in homemade laundry soap.
I also have been making my own detergent for years with the exact same ingredients. Love it!!
Lots of good information. You are reminiscent of the classy movie stars of the 30s and 40s. Arlene Dahl comes to mind!
I remember that mothers used Borax to soak dirty diapers before pampers. Or they had a diaper service.
In the 50s, we just wring them out on the toilet.
Your mother did an excellent job on those seat cushions! The piping looks absolutely flawless and so professional. She was quite the seamstress!
I was also impressed with the seat cushions! I have been sewing for 60+ years and I know how much skill it takes for perfect piping on upholstery!
Borax which is 100% pure boron is not only safe but something your body requires. Thanks for doing this video!
Interesting! Jim
I take Borax (1/8 teaspoon) mixed in water daily.

I live Bakersfield , Kern County, the Borax mines were in my county and we passed that whole area often....my family talked about Borax as we passed, daddy sharing - his knowledge of Borax- 50-60 years ago... Nice to learn more .
Thank you for great info...
Always #teamcantrell❤
Thank You for this! Borax has been a staple in my house since I can remember and should be better known. Thanks to you it will be.
Thank you!
Thanks! It's nice to hear that it's useful.
I've been making my own laundry detergent for about 5-6 years and I often include Borax. It works far better than anything in the grocery stores, costs a fraction and doesn't create the waste to be disposed of, particularly of the liquid detergent jugs.
recipe please?
@
For every one bar of Castile soap (grated), mix 1 cup washing soda, 1 cup Borax, 1 cup Ecos Oxo Bright and 1/2 cup kosher salt. Use 2 Tbsp. for HE washers, 1/4 cup top loader.
Thank you for this
Thanks for the tip about the salt for ants....I'm going to try it.
Hi! Thanks for sharing about using salt for ant problem. When you say most bugs, do you mean it is also effective on most bugs?
Fels Napha makes laundry soap which wlli sometimes clog a HE washer. Zote makes a detergent, which is what HE machines need to function properly.
@@bahba9247 Salt will ruin your soil. Be careful. Rain will wash that salt all over your yard.
And kill plants, flowers, and grass. I'd love to try it for ants, but its not worth the damage imo.@@gardengrowinmawmaw8642
I’ve been stocking it and boy I’m glad I have! ❤
Grandma taught me to use Borax and Fels Naptha soap to get stains out of my daughters clothes. Grandma and Mom swore by it for adding to laundry.
Works in gardens too. Many uses.
Rose just makes my day. There is nothing better than waking up to a good RoseRed Homestead video.
I agree… true teaching, so I can really learn!
Her name is Pam, though.
I use this for my home made liquid laundry soap and one bar of zote. I also ad 1 cup of washing soda! it gels up nice and smells great and gets the clothes very clean.
Just made 5 gallons, I add a sprinkle of scent beads, just to give it a little bit of scent.
What recipe do you use?
There are numerous recipes with higher concentrations. This was the original recipe shared with me 17yrs ago. (Minus scent beads, those were not even avail, then.). Cost is less than .40 per gallon.
1/2 bar zote or fels grated, then melted-cooked in about 1 gallon water
Once melted add a few scent beads
Add 1 cup each of borax and washing soda
Stir until dissolved, pour in a 5 gallon bucket that has cool water in it, mix, add enough water to make 5 gallons.
Great video, Pam, and a nice reminder about Borax. I had forgotten about the variety of uses.
Pam we use it dissolved in hot water in our carpet cleaner. It works well to remove stains. We cleaned the rv carpet recently and you should see the difference! It made our carpet look new.
I need to try that on my carpet. How much borax did you use? Water to borax ratio.
I'm curious to see what it does to our patio furniture in the spring 😊🌻
Thank you Pam. Great advice and video. Blessings to you all ❤
Holy moly i cant believe those cushions!!!
I hope the formula for laundry soap comes out soon. I need to make some. Thanks! Love your videos!
I totally love these videos on things to keep in our storage and this one is a favorite. We have used Borax for years and in our laundry but I really didn’t veer to far off the course but I will now. Thanks Pam and Jim!
Wow, the cushion pics are amazing! Looking forward to your laundry soap video.
That cushion transformation sold me on borax! Wow!!!!
wow. i love those pictures of the cushions. unbelievable the difference. great ideas
We take a teaspoon of this same mix every evening before dinner. Been doing this for a year now. 4:00 72 and going strong.
Homeopathy makes a remedy of Boron in tiny pills.
What brand do you use ? Please😊
Please do not ingest borax, even in the smallest amount. If you need the mineral, purchase boron for supplementation. Borax is a cleaning product, it is not food grade.
I’m upping my Borax supply next grocery shopping! Had no idea it was so versatile. Thank you!
Great video. I'm a borax user for laundry and ants. Will start using it for more.
I may have to try on the red ant hills
Thank you for sharing this information.
Same here and it's si frustating that unscented products cost more than the stinky ones.
They don’t have ur reaction

How do you know?
Borax/ boron is actually sold in supplement form , And used as suppository’s. I add it to my bath water and take it internally as well .
What benefits does it provide?
Do you use a different food grade version?
I do too as a supplement
I follow a group that uses it for health reasons. I haven’t learned enough to decide if I am going to do that.
I put a bit in every bath I take. It keeps my psoriasis & lichen sclerosis from flaring. My autoimmune skin conditions have calmed WAY down since doing this.
@@quantumspirit8439. I also have both of those. Will try boron as a supplement and borax in my bath
QUESTION?? What is washing soda??
@@doghairdontcarelindaniel7531 Washing soda is pure sodium carbonate (not to be cofused with Bicarbonate of soda, baking soda). Here in Canada it comes under the Arm and Hammer brand name, not sure if it's the same in the states.
@@northernkarma9296It is the same here in the States
Thank you very much for this informative video. I am a mature age Australian lady and remember my grandmother used Borax regularly in her home. I have always had a pack in my laundry cupboard and admit rarely using it. This is going to change from now ! I just subscribed to your channel and look forward to now seeing more of your excellent videos. Again, thank you and warm good wishes from Oz 🙏💐🌟
Thank you for your common sense and scientific approach. Always appreciated.
Wow like new. Great formula thanks Pam. Your Mother made beautiful cushions. Good quality long lasting fabric. Borax is amazing product.
I find the current laundry liquid soaps were not cleaning my clothes like they use to, so I started making my own laundry soap. What a fabulous result! Clothes are brighter & whites whiter. Borax also gets rid of roaches & water bugs, & if you live in the south you know what I mean.
So does invict gold for wood roaches
The original Barkeepers Friend was/is a powder. It is still readily available and is the cleaner of choice for stainless steel and copper utensils in my kitchen.
I use baking soda for everything you use Borax for. My grandmother always said if you can't eat or drink it, then it doesn't belong in your house ☺
U can drink borax
In this day and age with prepackaged food, air fresheners, chemically grown veg, pollution in our air etc the least of your worries is using cleaning products
Smart grandmother! 🙂
It’s something our body needs, so it belongs in your house 😂 so i guess you have no oil for your machines, no bleach, no furniture nor TV or so on 😂
Hi Rose, I had become unsubscribed and with everything going on didn't realize your videos were missing. So glad to have you back, I still have Borax but will be putting more back.
I put it in a jar and add hot water to dissolve, then add peroxide and put it in a spray bottle
I hang my pillows on the line and spray them with the mixture. Works great! Been doing it for years
Interesting. How much peroxide please :)
A one to one ratio to the borax and water.
Interesting tip! 👍
My condolences...
On your sink try barkeepers friend. It will restore your sink to brand new. Also works great on glass cooktops
My condolences too. I became a widow last January. Empathy and hugs.

I always learn so much from your videos. Thank you!
We found out about the place because we watched an old Huell Howser episode talking about it.
We very much appreciate all you do for us. Thank you 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Great grandma & Grandma always used borax to clean with, including laundry. Grandma & Grandpa taught me as many of the old ways as our life happened. So, I've been able to teach older & younger generations of people as they have been involved with me & my life. Of course some of these hacks my children picked up on too.
Borax is mines in Boron California, in the Mojave desert. I’ve been there. There’s a museum there and a 20 mule team in front
of it.
You make the greatest videos!
Thank you. I have used Borax in laundry for a long time, but I didn't ever think of it for the other uses you talked about.
Great video with really useful information. Thank you.
Awesome job with the cushion! 👍🏻👍🏻
Yes, very interesting and valuable! Your cushions look marvelous
I am so grateful for your videos. They are so informative and helpful. Thank you so much.
Thank you for the cleaning tips Boron is even more valuable as a nutritional supplement
Thank you. I use it it washing my clothes but now I can try new ways to use this product.
I still have the old Borax box, too. I also still have the 20 mule team wooden wagon model available when I was young a long time ago.
FABULOUS. THANK YOU.
As always, great information! I’m looking forward to the videos on laundry soap! Thanks, Pam and Jim.
Reminds me of Fels Naprha soap to suds up white linens and spread out in the sun for a day. Whites them up !
I love this!!! I bought mine because of ants! It definitely helped. They were such an annoyance but they were gone in 2 days! I'm so glad to see these other uses! Thank you
how did you use it
YES!!!
I switched to Borax & Arm and Hammer laundry booster instead of Oxy Clean to save $money.
Thanks for reminding me of its use. Used to use it all the time. Dont know why i quit.
Borax, and 100% castile soap, grated and mixed in filtered water makes very effective dish soap.
