Reminds me of the scene from one of the Star Trek movies where the crew is being court-martialed for stealing the Enterprise and Spock stands with his friends. The judge says something to the effect of "You can't be guilty because you were dead at the time." Obviously, both Spock and Buttercup consider death to be a "mere technicality."
"Can't afford to make exceptions. I mean, once word leaks out that a pirate has gone soft, people begin to disobey you. Then it's nothing but work, work, work all the time." Ha-ha! Love that line!!! :)
Preaches good, but is absolute bullshit. We experience SOME pain in life, of course. But how is life pain itself? Let's take two minutes to analyze human life, shall we? An average person wakes up after sleeping for 8 hours in a bed. Was the sleeping pain? No. It's comfy, warm, pleasant. Then an average person eats a breakfast. Rich and middle class will eat absolute delicacies that even kings could only dream about a thousand years ago. This applies to the hypothetical times Princess Bride takes place in, especially when we're talking about princesses. The poor will eat something cheaper and less fancy, perhaps but still you can't equate that to an incarnation of pain itself, that's nonsense. Eating is pleasure. Then, an average person goes to work or school. Some, of course, work in barely sanitary conditions or their work would be absolutely inhumane, even. But for most people, their work would be just average, very tolerable experience, demanding some effort. Is effort pain? No, it's not. Nearly all work and education that exists brings a lot of satisfaction when done with some minimal dedication. It's not a personification of pain, give me a break. Then, an average person returns home, to spend time with their friends and family. Some, of course, have pathological families. They experience abuse and actual, physical pain when they go back home. Others, experience loneliness or other forms psychological pain because they don't really have anybody to go back to. But for most people, what they experience when they go back home is exactly what they themselves bring. What they choose to be. If you are working very hard to be good spouses, good siblings, good neighbors, good roommates, it's VERY rare that they'll be stuck in a kind of toxic, hopeless relationship that brings nothing but pain. Most people end up in relationships like those because they are unwilling to go through the effort of changing themselves, and are in the business of draining their relationship dry for their own benefit. In other words, they are miserable because they choose to be. Nearly all people who truly WANT to, can build reasonably healthy relationships around them, so when they go back from school and work, they'll have people that they can call FRIENDS around them. And spending time together - regardless if it's doing chores and homework, or games and parties, will always bring pleasure, not pain. Then, you go to sleep, and you restart the cycle all over again. Cycle of what, pain? No. On average, you're mostly feeling good when you're sleeping, eating, putting some effort into your job, and socializing in the afternoon. There are SOME very miserable people out there, of course. But generally speaking... Life is pain my ass. Yeah, it's "iconic" but that doesn't make it any less true.

Watch at 0:33. Cary Elwes kept his leg extended while sitting down because he had injured his foot prior to filming this scene. The crew had to rent an ATV for Andre the Giant, because he couldn't fit into any of the vans they used for transport. He persuaded Cary Elwes to try riding it-and Elwes promptly slipped and broke one of his toes. The pain was so intense he couldn't bend his leg as he sat.

As for his voice, all Westley ever said before was "As you wish." Maybe Buttercup's not used to hearing him speak in longer sentences? And he always had such a gentle tender tone when he was speaking with her in the past, but now as the Dread Pirate he sounds much more forceful and sharp.
Dread Pirate Roberts: The prince never told you what happened to Westley. Buttercup: He told me enough! He told me YOU killed him. Dread Pirate Roberts: No. I am Westley.
Literally the best scene in the whole movie. Cary Elwes and Robin Wright played these character perfectly. And I love the scattered "oofs" throughoitbthe falling

“Fairytales aren’t real. That is not life. It’s because evil is powerful and scary, and it can win. In life, evil can triumph just as easily as good. Those who are horrified by this fact have lived with their head in the clouds. Those who relish in this are probably evil themselves. The best of people have a balance of both.” -Unknown
A bunch of people are asking “how did she not recognize him by his voice?” “How did she not recognize his eyes?” First of all, she still grieves her love and despises the circumstances she’s in due to his death, she loves him and is probably in denial about his features to protect herself. And secondly, the story does start with Buttercup only ever hearing “as you wish” from him for a really long time, and westley was a quiet, sweet, and gentle man, and she may have not recognized him because of his tone, maybe because he’d never taken that tone with her or blatantly scorned her in this manner. He was probably never angry with her like he was here. His eyes, she may have not wanted to make eye contact with, essentially her kidnapper, and maybe thought his eyes were a similar shade and refused to meet them, the whole scene she doesn’t make much eye contact with him, except only when she’s angry does she make prolonged eye contact because she’s hurt by his rude assumptions and behavior about her grief. His mask also probably helped darken his eyes, since they were a relatively dark shade, the black made them a different color from a distance, she hadn’t been close enough to truly tell.
I cannot believe that princess buttercup didn't notice recognize or realize that her sweet westley was right in front of her in his disguise and the moment she pushes him down the cliff when he said as.... You.... Wish that was when she said oh my sweet westley what have I done? And then she goes all the way down to her love that she didn't know he was alive nor that he came back for her. Princess buttercup and prince westley always together forever.
"You're the Dread Pirate Roberts! Admit it!" "With Pride! What can I do for you?" That was easy. "Who was this love? Another Prince like this one? Ugly, Rich, and scabby?" BURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRN!
I thought this was a wonderful plot twist. Like Butterclip, I did NOT know that the Dread Pirate Roberts was Wesley until he said "As you wish!" (didn't read the book)
The plot twist is especially good, when Westley says that the Dread Pirate Roberts was just a title used for a good amount of years. As Westley said, it's usually the NAME that strikes the most fear in people. Not just the person themselves
This is one of my favorite parts of the movie. This movie, has a lot of good dialogue. This scene definitely proves that. This is one of my favorite movies.
They said in an interview that they used the same stunt double for both Wesley and Buttercup tumbling down the hill. I feel sorry for that man. Is it bad that I've seen this movie so many times that I can recite the entire scene from memory?

So she can't recognize his voice, nor the 80% of his face that is not covered by the mask? That part to me is what is truly INCONCEIVABLE.
Sometimes grief blinds you
It is better than the tv show Miraculous Ladybug. That tv show is very annoying and frustrating.
I've always wondered the same thing "Why can't she recognize him by his voice?"
He grew a mustache! It's an ingenius disguise!
As for his voice, all Westley ever said before was "As you wish." Maybe Buttercup's not used to hearing him speak in longer sentences? And he always had such a gentle tender tone when he was speaking with her in the past, but now as the Dread Pirate he sounds much more forceful and sharp.
See that Meyer? That's a parody of every romantic adventure story known to man and it still does better romance than Twilight.
None find each other more ridiculous than lovers.
My Favorite Movie!! I had a boyfriend who looked just like Westley when I was in my 20's. He was beautiful! Great memories!!
Topaz5866 lier!!!
*"He was a Farm Boy! Poor!....Poor and Perfect!"*
If only women would say such a thing these days, I'd be smothered!!!
I agree but life is pain... Anyone who tells you differently is selling something
@@soul24311 Does your partner not say those things, or are you just wishing random women would say that?
@@sploofmcsterra4786 i was just trying to make a refrence lmao
you won't hear it often, you could say that to most girls...the words are... *iNcOnCEiVabLe!*
That's how I feel about my "true love"
Dread Pirate Roberts: The prince never told you what happened to Westley.
Buttercup: He told me enough! He told me YOU killed him.
Dread Pirate Roberts: No. I am Westley.
Buttercup: No. That's not true. That's impossible!
Search your feelings, you KNOW it's the truth!
NOOOOOOOOO! Noooooo!
LOL 😂
The Dread Pirate Roberts killed Westley is true from a certain point of view.
This Is one of my favorite movies. I watched it with my sons and nephew the first time. We are all big fans and have seen it many times.
Literally the best scene in the whole movie. Cary Elwes and Robin Wright played these character perfectly. And I love the scattered "oofs" throughoitbthe falling
Wow. "...life is pain, Highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something."
Why can't love be like this in real life
carla kanzig i agree
“Fairytales aren’t real. That is not life. It’s because evil is powerful and scary, and it can win. In life, evil can triumph just as easily as good. Those who are horrified by this fact have lived with their head in the clouds. Those who relish in this are probably evil themselves. The best of people have a balance of both.” -Unknown
Because life is pain. Anyone who says differently is selling you something.
Because we don't live in fairytales sadly
Somebody has to do the dishes.
Swear this movie is still one of the greatest rom coms.
One of the best movies ever made, and one of my all time favorites. :D
You know their love is true when they both tumble down a hill together.
A bunch of people are asking “how did she not recognize him by his voice?” “How did she not recognize his eyes?”
First of all, she still grieves her love and despises the circumstances she’s in due to his death, she loves him and is probably in denial about his features to protect herself.
Whenever people try to inject realism into movies like that I just say “Be quiet and watch the movie, would you please?”
I assumed it was because she assumed the man just happened to look a bit like Weasley
Wesley and Buttercup were like peas and carrots again
And unlike some other Wesleys, HE could speak with an English accent.
@@LaKellita smooth
Jenny!
@frank bonini If you had a brain you would know that she played Jenny in forest gump.
It’s been 5 years, she’s unhappy, he’s wearing a mask… AND BEING A JERK! It took her a few mins, ok? Lol
It's crazy that Buttercup's actress (Robin Wright) ended up playing Claire on House of Cards decades later. Hell of an actress.
Aaaaaasssss yyyyoooouuuu wiiiiissshhhhh.......
+Megan Mercer Thats was my favorite part!
Literally the best movie ever, it's so goofy I love it so much
Love how she doesn't even attempt to slide down or anything.....nope it's tumble time.
So glad we're watching this at my school in dance/drama class
Did you ever see the part when inigo vs the six fingerd man?
***** yes but the teacher skipped some of it because she said their was a "bad word"
Kit Tabby Smart move
"I died that day!" fucking true love at it's finest
Only these two can lose so hard at life and still win. This movie is so wonderful and funny.
Great music and soundtrack... and an even better movie....
Such a simple movie but so good
With a Title like “The Dread Pirate Roberts” I can’t imagine the others being as charismatic.
Wow the princess does good somersaults
Its cool when you see both of them fall down the hill in slow motion.
His face when she tells him it was a farm boy was awesome. “Oh shit she was like INTO me into me, okay.”
“And you can die too for all I care”
“As……you……. wish.”
I remember when I saw this part after reading the book I just kept thinking "Wow that's a nice cliff to be shoved off of!"
Westley: As..... You........wish.....
Buttercup: *YEET*
This movie was funny, classic and soon stupidly adorable! With hot actors and a fun romantic story
Westley and Buttercup’s reunion was really something else
you got that right.
the way he falls down and says “as you wish” and they’re like ow ow ow ssgahHshs gosh this movie was SO SILLY.... loved it
"You're the Dread Pirate Roberts! Admit it!"
"With Pride! What can I do for you?"
That was easy.
"Who was this love? Another Prince like this one? Ugly, Rich, and scabby?" BURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRN!
I love this movie so much and I love this book too. This is my favorite part.
Ed Vega i havent readen the book either but i understod it
You have a dizzying intellect
@@franklippert4278 I'm just getting warmed up!!
This is one of my favorite scenes
Her acting before she pushes him off the hill is incredible...
This is one of my favorite parts of the movie. This movie, has a lot of good dialogue. This scene definitely proves that. This is one of my favorite movies.
Same here
i'm happy that buttercup and wesley were reunited together❤
“Death cannot stop true love, what I can do is delay it for a while! ” AHHH😍
One of my favorite movies EVER!
One of the best films of all time ^^
I remember watching that when I was 8 and finding it halarious when they jumped down the hill! lol-the memories!
His eyes. I lose my breath every single time. 💕
*_death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for a while..._*
Kyaa!!! Ma favourite scene! I haven't see this movie for YEARS :O
They said in an interview that they used the same stunt double for both Wesley and Buttercup tumbling down the hill. I feel sorry for that man. Is it bad that I've seen this movie so many times that I can recite the entire scene from memory?
Alyssa Goss it seemed fun rolling down that hill im gonna find a hill like that and roll down it
0:40 "eyes like the sea-"
so you cant even recognize his eyes when ya'll lookin at each other? XD
princess - you can die too form all i care!

Tio Clotildo best part
Now you see why people say : I've fallen head over heels for you.😂😂😂
I always loved when she says
“Oh my sweet Wesley” I just feel like she is talking to me/about me haha
I’d like to thank my English teacher... yes it was only days before our final exams but I’m still glad he showed us this! 😂
My favorite line: “With Pride! What can I do for you?”
Hands down best love story ever
Titanic who? Don't know her.
The Notebook what? Never heard of her.
Favorite part of the movie! To have your true love stay true and keep his promise of returning shows how much he honestly cares ^-^
2:33 THE STUNT DOUBLE IS AN OLD MAN!!!!! as a kid I thought this was the funniest thing
AMAZING how he is testing her during this entire scene....!
