    Years ago I was at a science fiction convention. One of the vendors was selling a t-shirt that said on the front "I am the Dread Pirate Roberts No. 3,124". On the back it said "Inquire about franchise opportunities in your area".

    That story alone is one of the things that made this movie great. The idea of a famous pirate actually being a series of men who've passed down the title building on a legend is pretty cool. It's like "the phantom" only it doesn't suck.

      Yep, it would only work as long as a Man could be expected to live, so one lifetime. If we go by what Wesley is saying, then in a Man's lifetime, there might be as many as 8-10 Roberts. And then if the last one trains a Son then it could be said the Son took over for his aging Father, and then the legend might start over. Once a more settled world emerged, like when Cameras appeared, it would not be so easy, but still it's quite the idea. Even the name is genius since it's a reference to the greatest Pirate ever, Black Bart Roberts.

      @@michaelheath2866 True, but over time it might become a mystical role of sorts, something immortal. Either people would realize it wasn't always the same person but a role, a title, but that making it no less frightening (whoever deemed worthy of the role must be just as dangerous). Or they might believe Dread Pirate Roberts to be an immortal being, which in this universe seems possibly plausible.

      @@quillmaurer6563 there have been such legends weaved that make men seem like immortal beings of great power and command. Combined with the exaggerated legends of cruelty and merciless pillaging, men could start saying things like “he is a man that even death fears to oppose” or “his cruelty has transcended from his mortal form and taken a life of its own, and he lives on as a revenant pirate, ever hungry for more riches”. Sailors and pirates in particular, even fishermen, have a way about weaving wild tales that blur lines. It’s just something about the seas and oceans that make men good liars.

    You know, hidden behind the silliness and comedy of this movie are some pretty ingenious ideas... for example these 2 minutes of exposition could have been the premise for an entire movie.
    Think of Pirates of the Caribbean, but at the end of the movie it's revealed that Jack Sparrow was actually a guy called Dave the entire time, and the real Jack Sparrow had died or retired years before.

      I've thought of this being a premise for a movie as a possible sequel. I've heard talks of a remake of this movie, which sounds like a terrible idea, but I think they could certainly build on the concept. I envision something like this: After the ending of this movie, Wesley and Buttercup married, had a kid. Inigo Montoya, his quest to find and kill the six fingered man finished, took on the Dread Pirate Roberts role (this was hinted at in the final scene of the movie). 20 or so years later (him having done it for a long time, maybe not continuously) Inigo is ready to retire and hand off the Dread Pirate Roberts role, and hands it off to Wesley and Buttercup's kid (I don't say son as a female Dread Pirate Roberts isn't outside the realm of possibility). This might be the first third or so of the movie, the rest being about the new Dread Pirate Roberts' adventures, maybe battling with Humperdink or his son or something. Use the original actors in their roles (Wesley, Buttercup, Inigo, Humperdink) but they aren't the leading role of the movie, sort of handing it off to a new generation - similar to how the Star Wars original trilogy cast handed the series off to the Sequel Trilogy characters.

    • @forcewielder2000
      @forcewielder2000 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Running with the original poster's comments, Dave also wouldn't even be the second Jack Sparrow, either. He'd be the 4th (with the original Jack Sparrow having been retired for 15 years and living like a king somewhere). After all, no one would be surrender to a pirate named "Dave."

    • @trainknut
      @trainknut 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@forcewielder2000 I feel like it would be more fitting to the Pirates universe that the first Jack would've "disappeared decades ago" with even the previous Jacks not knowing his true whereabouts or fate, only his successor knowing what really happened.
      Of course he'd have to show up later as a cursed sailor or just chilling somewhere on a remote island, Jack(our Jack*) would find him, they'd team up for a while and then he'd probably die heroically or something like they usually do.
      With his final breath he'd say something like "the name belongs to my brother" and it turns out he wasn't the real Jack either, the real Jack was an orphan child who died 50 years earlier.

    I've had thoughts of this being a premise for a possible sequel. I've heard talks of a remake of this movie, which sounds like a terrible idea, but I think they could certainly build on the universe, particularly this concept.

      @@arcats9004 Good idea - the kid from the first movie (Fred Savage) reading it to a son or nephew or someone else. He's now 46 years old, wouldn't have quite the same impact as an elderly grandfather, but it could work.

    Probably the original superhero (or in this case antihero) case where the title is just that, a title that can live for many years with different people filling the role. Batman, Zorro, Dread pirate Roberts, Blackbeard, etc.... Real or fake cases of empires being built not based off of one man, but the legend. I really hope they come out with a futuristic Batman Beyond movie..

    Inigo is the truest dread pirate Roberts since the first, he spent twenty years of his life learning swordplay in order to revenge his papa's murder. If Westley handed down his knowledge to Inigo and Inigo kept up that tradition then each new dread pirate Roberts would only become better and better.
